Hi all !
I tried to change System/ permissions from to RWXR-XR-X to RWXRWX and it doesn't work. So I can't flash any zips that modify system files. Can you tell me how can I do ?
Thanks.

That isn't the way to do it. You should fix permissions in your custom recovery. If for some reason the zip you are flashing does not mount system as writable on its own you just need to mount it in recovery before flashing.

This is clearly the best way to have problems.
That's why fixing permissions in recovery is a bad idea and was removed from cwm.
It's dev's duty to take care of this during install phase.
1) rw system permissions are only relevant when you are in android. These permissions are irrelevant from recovery. Flashing zips is not affected
2) "fix" permissions from recovery is mostly removed now. Its dangerous, causing more trouble than its worth. Permissions should be handled when flashing by means of updater-script. You should never have to change permissions and if you think you do,.then you're missing something

Hello Members
I'm kinda new to rooting, i just installed ics 4.0.4 rooted it and now im having problems changing permissions in root explorer. Im trying to install Talk_with_AV_no_wifi.zip. I'm following the instructions from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390818. But its not working for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
just a guess but mayybe becuase it is in the i-777 forum, it could have diff, libs or something. idk if im right or not.
It worked fine when i had gingerbread. Since ive had ics been having issues with root explorer. I got passed moving the file from sd to system/app with help from other threads but when i try to change permissions in root explorer i get the message.

If its a mod from a different phone it probably won't work. I am on my phone and can't look right now.

The mod isn't phone specific, it worked when i had gingerbread on the same phone.
Check Superuser SU for any errors. It may have denied permissions. If so, just click the button at the bottom to enable RootExplorer to make SU changes.
Please help me...!!!
when i m trying to chage the permission in root explorer its showing me...'Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems(e.g SD Card) do not allow permission changes.'
plz tell me how to solv it...I have LG P698 mobile phone...its hv android 2.3.4
I've got root, SuperSU, and it won't let me change the files at all. I can't rename the files. Just says, "HotspotProvision.akp cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only". I can't find a permissions option. Do I need the pay version of Root Explorer?
What am I missing here?
The filesystem needs mounted as read write

The problem maybe with supersu binaries, delete these files through twrp or cwm recovery
system/etc/install-recovey.sh
system/xbin/ksud, ku.sud and su
I have HTC Butterfly x920d unlocked, rooted with S-ON. I change build.prop (ro.product.model and ro.product.brand) with root explorer. the build.prop.bak is generated.
But when i reboot my phone, every thigs goes to original state. original build.prop and without bak file.
Same thinks hapenns when i delete a \system\app\xxxxx.apk . When reboot, the file still there.
Some one know how can i changes \system without loose changes after reboot?

Yes, you have to install a kernel that allows the sys rw like the killx kernel.

The permissions on my vold.fstab are rw-r-r.
I zipped the one from my system below. I haven't messed with it so I guess it should still be stock. I don't have experience hard resetting the Shield so I cannot help with that and the only way I have updated is by going to about shield>update.

HEY!!
I wanted to change my LCD density on the build.prop file with build.prop Editor. It worked fine.
When I tried to copy the backup back from sdcard and replace the edited build.prop with the stock one, after reboot all I can see is the OnePlus logo with the "POWERED BY ANDROID" text.
I can access TWRP, but when I check the /system directory, there is no build.prop file. So I move it again from sdcard to the /system directory. It stays there until I reboot the phone.
I did EVERYTHING! chmod, mounting, moving using adb shell, and the file just deletes itself when I reboot the phone!!
I don't want to make a factory reset since I don't have a latest backup.
Please don't ask me why did I change the LCD density. I just wanted to check something.
PLEASE HELP!!

Reflash your ROM... Don't wipe the data partition and all will be as it was before.

no MD5 file found while installing via TWRP. Should I wipe /system?

I wiped system and pushed an md5 file. Still fails with no reason.
I use this ROM -
https://cyngn.com/products/oneplusone/
(On the bottom)
What error are you getting?.. You could try another download (that one may be corrupt) or CM11 ROM, you should still be able to keep your app data as long as you don't wipe that partition.. You only need to wipe system/dalvik/cache..

Are you mounting /system with TWRP before doing that?
Also, dont move the file, try cp which works better with crosslink devices
And try chmod 755 /system/build.prop with adb while in recovery and check the build.prop isnt edited in Windows so EOL is Windows-like, then use Notepad++ to change to UNIX-type
easy, you copy pasted so permissions are not the same as the original
reflash system or rom

Yep. Permissions should be rw-r-r (or 644). If you don't know what you're doing don't mess around with system files.

Hi guys
I have downloaded some APK's from the internet and I'm trying to flash them from a zip archive I flash alongside the Lineage OS using TWRP.
The zip archive contains the update script, binary files and two directories 'system' and 'data' with their respective apps folder containing the APK's.
The actual flash process itself is successful without TWRP throwing out any errors, but when I try to open the apps after the OS has booted they simply crash. I have tried to install the system apps to '/system/app' and '/system/priv-app' directories but it makes no difference, and with the data apps they indefinitely crash no matter what.
I can rule out the APK's being the problem because enabling the 'install unknown apps' option under settings and installing the same APK's they install perfectly fine.*
I need to find a solution to this as I often install Lineage OS to multiple devices and being able to install the*OS and app installations in bulk is a great timesaver. If you're wondering why I need to install the apps into the system partition it's because I need the apps to persist in the event of a factory reset.*
Could someone shed some light on this please?
Many thanks
Will

There's 2 big reasons why the apps may crashing...
First, The app wasn't designed to be a system app. The crashing of the apps are one way for this to be apparent.
Second, if the app is capable of being a system app, then it may be tied to the permissions for the apps Directory and/or apk files themselves. They will crash if they don't have the appropriate system reflected permissions.
One last thing for you to try if it's none of the above...
When you initially install your Firmware and others, leave out those additional zip files for the apps in question.
Once your device is booted up, and you have complete the initial setup, entering TWRP again and flashing those additional apps zip file and then reboot should do it.
Certain additional flashes won't work if they're not integrated within the Firmware nor designed for the initial setup process but, after the initial flash and the setup process after its first boot, entering TWRP for flashing those apps MAY/MIGHT work out for you.
I hope that I had explained this okay via text...
Good Luck!

Is there a way to set the permissions of the directory and APK's in TWRP using the update script?

The best way to show you is to provide an example of the updater-script file attached.
I just used one of the Stock browsers called "Gello.apk" (I don't actually use).
Look at the script and you'll see the Set Permissions line.
I hope that it helps you out...

From opening the script I have noticed that the permissions have been set for the APK itself. The update script I previously used had permissions for the containing directory but not the files themselves.
What I'll do now to test this all is try flashing the ROM, booting it up and then flash my additional apps.
The weird thing is OpenGApps installs perfectly fine alongside Lineage OS when flashed together in TWRP and they all get installed to the System partition. Is there any way I can see the permissions used so that I can see what permissions they use?
Additionally if I were to flash some apps to the Data partition, am I wise to use the exact same permissions used on the System partition for the Data one?
Many thanks

I've found the culprit to why the apps are crashing.
To cut a long story short I gave myself root privileges so that I could gain access to the '/data' directory and I looked inside it and there was only the .apk file itself.
I decided to reinstall the .apk found in one of the directories using the built-in package installer and low and behold inside the new directory two new directories called 'oat' and 'lib' have been made.
I did a test by moving the the 'lib' directory out of one of the app folders '/data/app/app_name' and the app did crash (as expected) trying to launch it. After restoring it the app can open again.
This odd behaviour of the app folders not containing the 'lib' and 'oat' directories' is present across both the '/system/app' and '/data/app' directories.
Has anyone got any suggestions why the directories are not being created when flashing the apps via recovery?
Many thanks
Will
