Hello Members
I'm kinda new to rooting, i just installed ics 4.0.4 rooted it and now im having problems changing permissions in root explorer. Im trying to install Talk_with_AV_no_wifi.zip. I'm following the instructions from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390818. But its not working for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
just a guess but mayybe becuase it is in the i-777 forum, it could have diff, libs or something. idk if im right or not.
It worked fine when i had gingerbread. Since ive had ics been having issues with root explorer. I got passed moving the file from sd to system/app with help from other threads but when i try to change permissions in root explorer i get the message.

If its a mod from a different phone it probably won't work. I am on my phone and can't look right now.

The mod isn't phone specific, it worked when i had gingerbread on the same phone.
Check Superuser SU for any errors. It may have denied permissions. If so, just click the button at the bottom to enable RootExplorer to make SU changes.
Please help me...!!!
when i m trying to chage the permission in root explorer its showing me...'Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems(e.g SD Card) do not allow permission changes.'
plz tell me how to solv it...I have LG P698 mobile phone...its hv android 2.3.4
I've got root, SuperSU, and it won't let me change the files at all. I can't rename the files. Just says, "HotspotProvision.akp cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only". I can't find a permissions option. Do I need the pay version of Root Explorer?
What am I missing here?
The filesystem needs mounted as read write

The problem maybe with supersu binaries, delete these files through twrp or cwm recovery
system/etc/install-recovey.sh
system/xbin/ksud, ku.sud and su

Hi! I searched the forums, but didn't see any answers regarding to this.
I'm trying to install the moded versions of SMS and Phone/Contact apps found in Cyanogenmod ROM over stock 2.3.4.
What I did was to extract Contacts.apk, Mms.apk, and Phone.apk from one of CM releases and copied the APK files to /System/Apps/ via Root Explorer (set it from R/W to R/O) and rebooted the phone, but there was no change.
I then tried to install them (from the same /System/Apps/ location) through Root Explorer, but it doesn't let.
Any help would be much appreciated.
If you are trying this you need to check/change permission on each app...the phone.apk will not work though I've tried and got force closes. The dialer and mms apks will work though. The best way to do this is to push via adb. If you don't have sdk and knowledge of the basic adb and shell commands I would highly reccomend becoming familiar with them.

I have sdk and worked with adb before to root my phone. I'll do some research on how to install apps via adb.
Thank you.

Just put the apps on your tool folder and enter the following commands....
adb push "your.apk" system/app

Thanks again. I did that and got confirmation that the files were copied, but the new Mms, for example, wasn't installed.
I tried using "install" command after, but it wouldn't let me. I got a message saying that the file already exists.
I changed the permission and everything, too.
Any ideas?

That's odd...I usually don't have to change permissions when I push an app. What version of the cm7 mms apk are you using? I used it from the stable 7

I was using Nighties, but I'll try the latest stable 7. Downloading now.
Just to clarify what I did:
First, used the "adb push" method you suggested and the apk files were copied to system/app. I rebooted, but nothing had changed. I then tried to install the copied files via Root Explorer, but it wouldn't let me. I changed R/O and then Permissions, but still couldn't install.
Then I tried "adb install", but it said file already exists. I changed R/O then Permissions, but still couldn't.
After that, I deleted Mms.apk and Contacts.apk and tried all the methods described above again, but still nothing. The apps weren't installed and I kept getting FC.
Lastly, I manually copied the files again via Root Explorer (changed R/O then changed Permission), but still no change and couldn't install.
Hopefully CM 7 packages I'm downloading would work.
I downloaded everything in the cwm final
I used file manager to overwrite the old files and when I boot into recovery I still get the old recovery and not cwm
There is also nowhere for me to instal from update.zip
I have done this on my evo and it was easy but I'm clearly missing something with my galaxy 4g would someone be so kind as to give step by step instructions?

and yes you must reinstall packages every time you want to re-enter CWM so you must leave the update.zip on you SD card

recovery.bin probably isn't being overwritten correctly. At first I downloaded the file with Dolphin Browser and had the same problems. Try downloading the file with firefox and then try pushing it to /system/bin again.
probably recovery file is not being copied in system/bin folder. i can see it has only read permission for group and write permission. i tried rom manager permission fix, that didn't change permission of recovery. i tried changing from terminal using chmod +w & chmod 755. but that didn't help change the permission on recovery file.

Rom Manager isn't working for the Galaxy S 4G yet.
What application are you using to copy recovery to /system/bin?
typically i use ES explorer but i tried File Expert too.
one typo on my prev post: i don't have write permission on recovery, only got read permission.

ES won't work. File Expert should work. Just make sure you have R/W permissions. Don't do anything with Rom Manager. That won't help.
yea it should work as they say but it does not. I tried changing permission using File expert,it click OK and then i check file permission on recovery right away, the write permission is not checked. even chmod 755 failed to change the write permission!

I don't think you have any problems with R/W. I just don't think the recovery file was overwritten. Look in /system/bin in File Expert. Do you see recovery and recovery.bin? Or just recovery?
/system/bin/recovery file exists and i have been trying to change its permission.

You don't need to change the permission of recovery. Copy the recovery file and navigate to /system/bin in file expert. When you get there you want to hit menu then more then mount. It will give you two options. Pick mount as read write. Then paste the recovery file.
Read through this thread again. It should help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
mounted with read/write and now i could boot into recovery.
Thanks a lot for taking time to answer my questions. First backup is in progress...

I have changed the permission and pshed the files using adb. I get the message
process com.android.inputmethod.latin has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I am trying to make it work using htc sensation with ARHD XE ROM 3.6.7
Can anyone help me.
Where did you get the zip file? I am going to try install this version as the latest one in the HyperNoSense Rom keeps just dropping the keyboard VERY frustrating!
Replace it yourself then, it's not that hard.
the .so goes to
/system/libs
the apk goes to
/system/app
I don't know the permission for it and I don't pay attention to it. It just worked for me straight away

I have already tried this but no good. May be I should download file from different location and give it a try. Thanks for your help.
I got it working
I have managed to get it working by downloading the file from different place.
Copied the apk file to /system/app then changed permission and extracted .so file and copied to /system/lib, changed permission and restarted.
I would like to thank all of you who tried to help me. I love this community.
I originally rooted my 6210 with root.zip posted somewhere on XDA. I have tried the manual method of adding "media_rw" in the platform.xml file using Root Explorer, which I was able to do, but it turned off my internet connection when I rebooted.
I then reflashed with the stock ODIN, still no internet. I then rooted with Gary's 6210_CWMR_2010107.zip file and the Internet started working again and I was able to restore with TB.
However, the /sdcard/extStorages/Sdcard is still read only. I am using the 6210.
Any suggestions on how to get the Micro Sd card writable from the device?
Try this. Then check with Root Explorer to change back and forth permissions.

I tried that. I received R/W permissions to platform.xml, but sdcard/extStorages only has Read only permsissions. I put in the proper wording in platform.xml and it stuck, but no change to extStorages. The only thing that changed was I lost my Internet Connection.....Wifi still worked, just no internet.
Is it necessary to keep platform.xml r/w, or should I change it back to r/o?
Why dont you just download the files and flash it instead of changing the xml by yourself...

That is what I did. The sdcard/extStorages folder is still Read Only.
Is there anyone out there who can give me some real help.
Many thanks,
I root my phone as a thread
In the site but when I use root Explorer to edit permissions of some
Folders ex: system it says Warning
Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems
(E. G. SD cars) do not allow permission changes
Also I use root Explorer as r-w

No some permissions are unable to change because it is for safe purposes because you might screw up your phone if you change the permissions or there is a duplicate file of it

ok... i think there is a newer one in development section, with superuser 3.1.3
but i don't know if that is the problem, anyway you can redo the whole process of rooting, starting with flashing stock or you can change the app
i use root explorer and it works nicely, never had a problem with it
another thing you can try is flashing a custom rom, maybe its a firmware problem
