Nexus 5 phone dialer buggy? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe just me but the phone dialer feels buggy. Several times i select a number on the call history list to dial. It seems to then be stucked on dialing. if i hit back and manually dial the same number on the number pad then it dials through. Also does anyone have problem with dialing out or receving phone call, then hang up and music playing doesn't resume? I have this problem with n7player and also somewhat buggy with poweramp..

Still have problem with it and can't figure if there's anything to make it better. I would have poweramp playing music then hit the dialer app. dial a number and as soon as i do that poweramp is shut down. after hanging up music doesn't resume because it appears the music player has been killed. When the music player is restarted, volume is messed up or it sounds garbled. This seems even worse with my stereo BT headset jabra BT3030.
Anyone else got this problem? I mean am i really the only one with this problem?

I do not use the dialer, as I am a teenager so I just text so I can't confirm anything. Haha. Anyways, try ExDialer from the Play Store. You will loose the new 4.4 dialer features like business caller ID, if that matters to you. You can change the theme if you don't like the stock theme.

The music apps you are using may not be yet compatible with Kitkat. Try testing Google Play Music (comes with phone) and see if the problem persists.

The two i tried are poweramp and n7player. The reasons for those apps? I need a player that has lockscreen control and queing files to a playlist by being able to select files individually from folder view and multiple saved playlists. There are actually not too many of apps that has all those as several does not have folder view of files anymore. Google play music app does not have folder view of files

after MUCH pain i got google music play to work and yes it does work with dialer and pause and resume music properly with phone call. it does have a so and so lock screen control but no adding file to playlist by folder view. what a pain. am i the only one missing the folder view?

I have found if you turn off animations "developer mode" it messes with the dialer.

I've found the dialer to be perfect, and so far haven't had a problem with it. I found it SO cool when I called my work number and the name and my logo came up idk if this is just me lol but I thought this was the coolest thing ever.

I am still trying to decide if it's the dialer problem or if it's the music app problem. Google play music app works fine resuming music after making a phone call. I just wish google music play app has an add file to playlist from a folder view. I am kinda old school....

I've had problems with the dialer itself. Was working fine for me now it freezes. Sometimes I receive a phone call and I cannot answer it. I had my settings set to ART and now I switched back, cleared the cache, and I'm still experiencing problems. I have a custom recovery and am rooted. Not sure if that's the issue but this just recently became a problem. I did have my animations turned off. I'm going to try turning them on as someone suggested. Will report back.

Tried a factory reset and was still having problems with the dialer. Then I went into the mobile data settings and set it to auto roam, I have sprint so I did not select sprint home only. I also set it to accept roaming and kept the network mode to global. I had changed that to LTE before and also have the roaming network set to Sprint only. Now that I changed these settings I can receive calls and sail out without any problems even with my music player on. Hope this helps.

THANK YOU!
Specifically, it is the "Animator Duration Scale." The other two animation settings can remain off and the dialpad will still appear.
That was bugging the crap out of me.. !

[Q] The phone is making sounds....

So I have my N5 for a couple months now, running stock ROM with stock launcher, rooted with Xposed tho.
Today while sitting around with some friends it made a sound I never heard before, sounds like some kind of notification but no notification was found... I open the lock screen and there's nothing. Then, while I holding it and looking at it the sound beeped again... My friends thought I was an idiot but then it happened again!
3 times in about 2 minutes and I have no idea what it was, there was no indication of anything on screen or in the notification area and I never heard that notification sound before...
Is there any way to find out what that was? Or any place that shows exactly which notification sounds are configured? Cause this is having me worried...
It's been a couple of hours since then and it hasn't happened again.
It was me, I was trying to contact you...

I had this also before while using a rooted S3. I can hear a faint sound but no notification, although at one point I did notice a toast notification fading. So assumed it was one of the apps I installed that requires root (probably greenify at that time) that is kicking in and that supersu was giving the toast notification.
maybe change the notification method on the supersu you are using or check the logs
I haven't encountered this on my Nexus as I'm not rooted

My wife's GNex was doing this a while back. It drove me CRAZY! I figured maybe it was an app that she installed, but she claimed she didn't install any new apps. So then I thought maybe it had something to do with the phone even though it was completely stock. Then, when she got a G2,she installed all her apps, and it made that same sound AGAIN! I took her phone and tried to figure it out.
Long story short, it was her Yahoo email app. In the settings, it was set to not show notifications in the statusbar. However, it was still set to make a notification sound. I don't know who would make an app that would allow you to hide the notification, but still PLAY THE DANG NOTIFICATION SOUND! Anyways, it sounds like you may have an app installed that behaves the same way?

This would make sense but I didn't install anything lately and am generally very very aware of anything I put on my phone and after that I greenify almost everything...
The only thing I found possible is that I seem to have forgotten to greenify Zedge and when I checked processes last night it had a service running. Maybe that was it? I greenified it after that of course.
Anyone know of a notification sound Zedge makes? I found nothing in settings.
Maybe it was a NFC chip close to some readable tags (like credit cards with tap to pay possibilities)? Check how it sounds...it can be it ...

Stepback! We got a winner!
After you said that I remembered that the phone was sitting on my wallet at the time, tried it again and there's that sound again. So now I know what it is generally but why does it beep? Simply to let me know that there's a NFC card around? Does it read it? Kinda uncool that it reads my credit card when I didn't ask it too...
Yep, it reads it, but only some common data, nothing to worry about . You can check what it reads by installing some NFC app like NFC tools.

Do you have fb messenger installed? For me, it does the ghost notifications. I chat on fb on pc, then I stop. About 1-2 hours later my phone get ghost notifications.
I chat again on fb on pc, then i stop chating on fb. Start using my phone after I stopped chatting on fb on pc. After 10-20 mins I get the notifactions for incoming messages on fb chat on phone even after I replied to them and seen all of them on pc. These notifications disappiers as soon as the notification sound goes off

Swiping The Music App From The Recent Tasks Stops Playback

I'm running CM11 M8, but I've been having this problem with many previous builds.
Problem is, whenever I'm listening to music using either the Google Music app or Apollo, and I decide to clear the recent tasks list, playback is stopped.
I would assume this was by design, if it weren't for three factors:
1) This post by Diane Hackborn, specifically "uses the new API to tell any services of the application about the task being removed so it can do whatever it thinks is appropriate."
and I should hardly think that stopping playback just cos you're clearing the recent tasks is appropriate. One should be allowed to clear the recent tasks list entirely, and see no change in phone behaviour. The recent task list is not a task manager.
2) This wasn't the way it used to behave (I think circa Jellybean)
3) The Music icon remains in the notification bar even when playback stops.
Is this a bug underlying 4.4.4? Or is a problem with CM only?

It depends on the music player app.
Shuttle+ continues to play and the notification stays when swiped away from Recents which is why I've stuck with it, and it's a good music player anyways.

Shuttle is very nice, I might consider migrating to it, why not. Thanks!
But...
I'm still convinced the Google Music app behaviour is buggy and not by design. Once it's swiped from recent tasks and the music stops, pulling down the notification window, the Music app's notification shows the "Pause" button, as if music were being played back. Also, I'd expect Google's own Music app to use the API element onTaskRemoved properly! It's their own guidelines after all!

In KitKat, the recent apps list is pretty much a task manager. It's not supposed to be, but it is. Your own tests demonstrate that.
Google's music app does not run a service. This is why it gets killed when you swipe it away. Services are restarted when they are killed. Or at least they can be automatically restarted.
Of course, the solution here is to stop your OCD recents swiping

Yeah, Shuttle is also lighter than Google Play Music (Google apps will always be Google apps ). It's also designed exactly the same (minus streaming of course) and it'll look exactly the same if you select the Light theme with Orange. I bought the paid version (Shuttle+) and don't regret it at all.
I'm not sure if stopping playback is intentional or not, it's happened with every music player I've tried (other than Shuttle/Shuttle+). Some music players remove the notification and stop playback when swiped away in Recents, some stop playback but keep the notification (and wouldn't play if I used the controls in the notification, until I actually opened it again).
Try seeing if it plays after swiping it away in Recents then playing from the notification?

Yeah... I know it's technically not needed, but sometimes I just like to clear all the recent tasks not to free RAM or any of that (I trust Android to handle its RAM), but for my own mental order, so I can see only the apps I need in a certain context during the day.

That's exactly what convices me there's some buggy behaviour. If you to tap the mysterious "Pause" button in the notification, the song does restart, but the button stays on Pause. Normal Play/Pause button cycling resumes from then on.
But!
After swiping it away from recents during playback, the notifications disappears for second, comes back and then only stays for a while, then it disappears by itself unless you start playing the song again!
It's seriously all over the place. I refuse to believe this is by design!

Yeah I just installed it and it's doing the same. Definitely not ROM-specific. Not much you can do about it other than use another player, I guess.

Aw, thank you for going through the trouble of trying it, I'm glad I'm not the only one who'd experience it.
Sometimes I swipe it away expecting it to stop playing music but it continues playing. It's kind of strange to have to both swipe and close the notification to stop the music, just one or the other should be enough.
Since the functionality is not consistent I imagine there is a bug in there somewhere. Also, when you swipe away and the notification remains if you check your running apps at that time it shows GPM as "Restarting", so there is unnecessary CPU time being used during what should be a simple process of closing an app.

Yeah, both the notification's icon inconsistent behaviour and the (mis)handling of onTaskRemoved make me think shenanigans.

Ooh, cool! Thanks for pointing me to that thread man, much appreciated.
Sadly the module itself doesn't really change the behaviour of swiping Play Music from recents on my phone. Even though the author says "Or start music with Google Play Music, then clear from recents app and music will be stopped. This is abnormal behavior.", that's weird.
But it's always nice to know someone's on it!

Yeah, maybe there'll be a full fix for it eventually
Stellio music player also keeps playing when swiped from recents. Same prize as Shuttle+ and I find it better - downloads lyrics and album art, has lockscreen (optional) and consumes less ram.

[Q] Not Able To Start Video Capture

Since taking 4.4.4 (and rooted), I have been unable to record any video in either the stock app or the google camera (haven't tried any 3rd party beyond that). Pictures are fine, but trying to take any video with the moto stock camera gives the following error msg on screen:

Did not work for me! I have a Motorola Maxx XT1080 with 4.4.4. Upon re-boot, video capture works first time, but fails every time thereafter with error message "Not able to start video capture". If I re-boot again, same thing...works once, then fails thereafter with same error message. Any other solutions?

Updated to 4.4.4 and I got the same problem
Thanks for that, been wondering what the issue has been. I guess I will just keep it so that my Nova Launcher has the Ok Google response. Turned off the Google one and it fixed the issues for the phone now. Much appreciated for the help.
Had this same problem.
I was taking videos this evening with no problems then started checking out "Google Now" options and enabled the voice commands from any app and from the locked screen. Then went back to taking or trying to take videos and got this same error message. I tried rebooting and it didn't work so I googled the error message and found this forum. I did as suggested and disabled the voice commands for "Google Now" and my video recording went back to working. So does anyone know if this error is being addressed for a fix? Also, thanks for the help!
**** that, I was wondering what was wrong with my droid ultra, well i dont even need the okay google command since we have touchless controls anyways so its pretty pointless, also seeing how we may get updated to the new moto actions.
moto x xt1058 video capture not able
Hello friends, some time ago I got moto x xt1058, update to 4.4.4 and get same problem
Camera work well after reboot, but then I get message "not able to start video capture". That to bad course Skype and viber also didn't work.
Then I find this forum and try to turn off OK google now detection, but this button in voice google app's menu didn't work. It is grey (not active) color and has a message below " this feature is currently anavaliable on this device". Google now voice commands works well and I have no idea how to fix my camera problem.
P.s. camera work only in slow mode.
Thanks.
HERE IS THE FIX! Remove call recorder.
I HAD THE SAME THING for the last 3 months. I found it v frustrating.
THIS FIXED IT FOR ME AND FOR OTHERS
REMOVE THE APP CALLED "CALL RECORDER" as this uses the microphone at all times and stops video from working. Other call recorders seem to work fine with no affect on video.
Cheers,

Ben's Awesome Solution to "not able to start video capture" on my Moto X
I have had the same problem as many others.
Where I try video recording on my Moto X and only get the SUPER FRUSTRATING - "not able to start video capture"
I tried the Google "3 Dot" - Google Now Shut Down and it worked upon reboot..."ONCE." Only to have it not work until another reboot...
I had to resort to carrying around a spare iphone to record what my Moto X couldn't.... auuggghhhh!!
Anyways, to make a long story short, Ben's comments fixed my problem...

After I deleted this app...NOW I have use of my Video Camera and DO NOT GET THE "not able to start video capture", AND I just tried to set up Smartphone payments with Square.com (the app would not work with the swiping Dongle because it said "A RECORDING APP NEEDED TO BE CLOSED" for that process to occur) which lead me on another internet search for a solution and wound me up backtracking to here and eventually to Ben.
So now I can Take Videos and charge people for them??? Ha ha, Maybe I will now!! Who Knows!! ;P
Thanks Ben for your AWESOME Solution!!!
REMOVE THE APP CALLED "CALL RECORDER" as this uses the microphone at all times and stops video from working. Other call recorders seem to work fine with no affect on video

Korean Firmware update November 20 2015

Well Korea got another firmware update this morning. The update never gave details but here is what I've found so far:
In the settings under Device, there is now an "Auto open apps" option. Basically when you scroll through your apps list, whatever app you stop on will automatically open.
Also in the settings under "connections" there's an alert option now to be notified via vibration when disconnected from your phone.
Under the display setting there's now a screen timeout option. 15 secs, 30 secs, 1 min, or 5 minutes.
Also some bloatware was added. Apps added were a world clock, starbucks, a korean navigation app, and the flipboard news briefing app. There's also a few watchfaces added, nothing new, same ones shown at the initial unveiling. All of them can be uninstalled thankfully.
There's a notification indicator option now also in display. It will make a little orange circle appear on your watchface until you've viewed the notification. Only works if you don't have notifications set to automatically turn on your screen in the Gear Android app.
When reading the text of a notification, it will make the font larger if you double tap the screen.
Cosmetic differences:
now says "add widget" under the + symbol when you scroll all the way right.
On a notification, when you swipe up to dismiss, it now shows a trash can.
For a notification reply, the emoji symbol has been replaced with a more traditional circle happy face.
When you scroll right on the watchfaces menu there's an option to "Add template" now. It then lets you choose from the watchfaces that can be stylized and make a new face from them.

The screen timeout option was the thing I was waiting for. Good they have it now.
Thx for sharing.
How are the updates rolled out? Seems that austria does not get much love from Sammy...
Is there a way to force the update?

I'm looking forward to having the "Vibration when disconnected" feature back. Had it with the Gear S
Any update on sleep monitoring?

I noticed small cosmetic changes inside the S-health app, but nothing else beyond that. I've found nothing related to sleep monitoring.
Also checked yesterday to see if a reminder can be set using S-Voice, and that is also still broken.
I can't believe they didn't map the top button to toggle most recent app... it's so annoying having to go back to the app screen to get to your music app while running... the button is basically wasted without a double click or long press option.
I glad they brought back the vibrate when disconnected function.

In SHealth I'm able to swipe/twist to the right and get to the music controller, which then returns to SHealth when I press the back button.
Coming from Pebble I expected apps to be persistent and not just to have the watch exit home to the watchface everytime the display times out. It's really nice to have a persistent app for a music player. I could adjust the track or volume without looking at my wrist. And it's also greatly needed for the stopwatch. A settings option for persistent apps would be great.
My Gear app updated this morning, I see no change in the watch. The app on the phone has a whole new layout, but nothing has changed on the watch. Still shows the same J3 software version. I rebooted the watch and nothing. Do I have to reboot my phone? I hate to try this as it always breaks my weather app and I have to totally uninstall all gear apps on the phone and factory reset the watch to get it working again.

If it's not a Korean Watch, just be patient. The app was updated, but they have not pushed the new firmware out to the rest of the world. To confirm this, go to Settings->About Gear->Update Gear Software->Update now.

Ah, I understand now. Thanks, got to excited to soon.
display time out
So I got the update on my classic watch, there is 5 new watchfaces.
There is also a new option on the display settings so now you can choose the time from 15 sec up to 5 min.
If i set the display timeout on 5 min it's nothing change...
So I do not understand what the problem is or the new options mean???
Could anyone help me?
Regards
Elvis
You guys are lucky.
In korea some devices that are updated got stuck at booting logo.
I think it will be soon fixed and then you can get this update.

I agree there should be a long press top button feature. The way I deal with this problem is I set long press home to the music player. Then to access apps you press home then press home again.
Encrypted Phone
So I have the Nexus 5X, aka phone is encrypted.
My watch is from Korea and the app does have an update, but I get the error message that it cannot install because phone is encrypted. Any solutions?
My Gear Fit, which isn't actually Tizen, but resembles it a bit, has an option for what you want to do after timeout - return to watch face, or remain on last app. Very handy, and Samsung could certainly add this option, since they already know how it works.

I really want that option.
Some decent additions there, but I was really hoping Sleep Tracking would be included.

Question Audio Guide while walking

Hallo all,
I own a GW4 Classic. I used to own the GW. During walking i used to have audio messages every 1 km with the GW. It would tell me my heartbeat, average speed and so on. With my new GW4 i can't get any sound out of it. Firmware version DUJA. All notifications, system, ringtone, audio, media and so on work fine. All settings are standard, i resseted the watch twice. It should work out of the box.
The audio Guide is on and i set the frequency on one min. for instance, start walking. After one minute, it vibrates with a black screen with green letters telling me the distance. Thats all.
I can not imagine it is a hardware problem? What do you guys think?

Interesting. I have used this when cycling, while connected to my Galaxy Buds+. I've never touched the settings, and it worked just fine. Actually glad to know that I can adjust it or turn it off. Might be an obvious question, but are you using headphones/earbuds? If not, you've no doubt checked the audio settings on your watch?

Thx for your reply. I do not use headphones. I checked all the audio settings and no luck. It should work out of the box. Thats why i reset the watch before. Sound should come out of the speaker of the watch without headphones.

Right, I see that now in your original post. I would suggest you keep playing with it, trying various options, settings, etc., and not send it in for repair (at least not yet). The feature works, and in my experience, this kind of issue is most likely not a repair issue, but a setting or system limitation issue.
I am trying for 2 weeks already. Deleted the apps completely. Deleted the plugins for the watch. Reset to factory 3 times. New firmware this morning. Twice contact with Samsung. I am completely lost.....

Deleted the apps completely? Isn't that a systems app?
Don't think so Samsung wearable is an Android app. Together with a plugin it connects to your phone thru BT. Then you have Samsung health for your fitness stuff and Samsung health monitor for ECG and Blood Pressure.
I deleted all, deleted storage and cache first. Like i said, if you delete all the apps, reset the watch, and do not roll back a backup, it should be as out of the factory. Connect to Wearable app, the plugin is installed and all should work as out of the box. Nobody complains about this "audio guide" feature, so it looks like it's only my watch which is faulty.
Would be nice if i got some feedback, if other people struggle with this feature.

Thx for your post. After your remark to not send it for repair i gave it another try. Reset the watch, installed the wearable app again without restoring a backup. Guess...... it didn't work. But then i restored my latest backup. It didn't work. Then i was goin thru all the settings and i noticed one setting i could try. GENERAL > INPUT > LANGUAGE. I was able to download a Dutch language pack. And you won't believe it, but it works. I am so happy. It cost me two weeks!

That's great to hear! I figured it had to be a software issue given that you know your hardware is fine (as audio is working), so glad you found it and sorted it out in the end!
Thank you!
Few days ago I have install last firmware (photo in attach) and now i have a same problem. Almost one year I used it for running (gw4), and after every km I got audio guidence, now I only have vibration, screen turns on for a few seconds but without any voice. Any idea how to solve this irritating problem? Thanks
For me it worked to change default language on my phone (and not watch) to english. Bad solution, but it is working
