Has XDA had any "movements" to get manufactures to push updates faster?
Or better yet get Google to change its policy on how updates are pushed so manufactures do not have a choice.
For example we could:
1. Pick a feature or bug (easiest would probably be a security flaw)
2. Call them over and over

3. Send them emails
4. Send them Snail mail?
Seems like Slashdot just reported "Security Expert Warns of Android Browser Flaw" about some security flaw with the default browser on android. I think it is going to be in Android 2.3 or a subsequent update.
Google has nothing to do with it, and Samsung is very limited.
AT&T is in control of when new updates are released for Cappy.

How does Apple and Microsoft and Palm get away with over the air updates published by OS manufactures?
Why can't Google do the same thing?
Seems like Samsung with their Kies program could provide updates without AT&T's approval much like iTunes does iPhone updates.
Apple got that right when they negotiated the contracts, which Samsung didn't do.
Almost all interactions between large companies like this are controlled by contracts between said companies... do you really think Samsung would pay a few million just to push out an un-approved update to keep us happy? I don't.
These kinds of threads are always entertaining for me...
We tried something like this with HTC, since the ATT Tilt didn't come with proper graphics drivers and had no hardware acceleration. There was even a class action lawsuit in the works. We got some stock responses from HTC, but never any promise of updates and no graphics drivers.

Apple and Palm are able to do this because they make the hardware that their operating systems run on (guess why you've never seen a non-Apple device running iOS or a non-Palm/HP device running WebOS commercially). Apple's OS is closed source so they're the only one with access to programming the phone, though they have to pass the carrier's testing process.
Microsoft do this because their operating system is closed source, they provide the updates to the phones directly because they aren't sharing the code and have very strict licensing agreements with the hardware developers. In fact, I believe WinMo 6.x actually did receive updates from the hardware developers and NOT Microsoft, but I believe that's changed with WinPho7 (not 100% sure about that).
Your comment about Google is also hilarious because there is only one Google branded phone (maybe three if you count the android developer phones like the ADP1 and HTC Ion), the Nexus One... and guess what, Google provides updates DIRECTLY for that device as long as it isn't a carrier-branded phone. But even if you do have a Nexus One from, oh I don't know, Vodafone or someone, you still get your update from Google, you just have to meet Vodafone's specific licensing and testing agreements.
Quite simply, Google has no control over who uses Android OS and for what purpose because it's open-source content. They only have the tiniest bit of influence by saying what devices can and can't have the Android Market, and their restrictions on that are vague at best. Google no more owns Android than Linus Torvalds owns the Linux kernel.
I have it on good authority that the Froyo dev and Captivate support teams have been enlisted to man the front lines at the DMZ. The theory is that the dev team will slow the hostilities down to a crawl and the support team will baffle the NKs with bull****.

You really need to research topics more.....
Apple and MS don't push updated OTA - (I have not idea what you are even implying). Apples updates are downloaded and installed through iTunes. Also, the multimegabyte Windows Phone udpates I received on my Moto phones were also done via my PC - never OTA.
Also, Any phone you buy that is carrier branded, must have updates approved by the carrier. AT&T will not allow an update to go out until they have approved - it doesn't matter if it is OTA or Kies install.
As mentioned above Google has nothing to do with it. They developed android, but then the phone manufacturer customizes it. Google couldn't provide an update even if they wanted to - they don't have the drivers and all the custom files.
So to recap - Samsung creates the software, but they only do it if the carrier will sign off on it. We don't know if Samsung is still developing and AT&T is waiting for a final build or if AT&T has the final and is still doing their testing.
Also remember, Palm has to have its updates for carrier branded devices pass certification before they can be pushed OTA to carrier branded WebOS devices.. This is why the AT&T devices received the latest version of WebOS last...certification.

Busted.
I really thought Microsoft was doing OTA updates for Windows Phone 7. The articles from April all say they were going to but since then there are a bunch that say zune software only - including Microsoft's site.
When I had my iPhone it seemed that Apple was able to create fixes and push them to people quick. Remember the "Antennagate" episode. It seemed like AT&T wasn't forcing them to do any crazy month+ period of testing.
Samsung has a Windows Phone 7 "Focus" with AT&T.
I assume the testing for Hardware Drivers and AT&T Network support should take the same amount of time for Windows Phone and Android.
AT&T has default Apps.
Samsung has default Apps including Touch Wiz Launcher.
Can I assume these are just as easy to validate they are working as the Apps that come on the samsung focus as well?
If so then android updates on samsung should be just as quick as windows phone updates right?
Has there been any windows phone updates yet to compare?
Ok guys I am sure we can all see where this is leading.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is shipping with a LoJack-style security feature that allows users to track a lost or stolen Samsung Galaxy S4 even after a hard reset.
Samsung enhanced the security of the Galaxy S4 with a partnership with Absolute, a company well-known for making notebook security software, and the feature is rolling out with the Galaxy S4 as part of Samsung KNOX.
Compared to Apple’s Find My iPhone feature, the Galaxy S4 will offer a more robust tracking solution. Thieves can restore the iPhone to disable Find My iPhone, but Absolute’s firmware-persistence technology on the Samsung Galaxy S4 lives at a firmware level, which means a hard reset will not cancel a user’s ability to track or remotely wipe the Galaxy S4.

Question is. Will both the Snapdragon and Octa have it? Will the US versions have it?
For some reason the US versions do not have the remote controls like my i9300 does. I have a feeling this feature will be lacking in some of the SGS4 just like the SGS3s.
None of us will be using Knox unless our employers are.

What do you guys think you need it for? What it does really has no benefit for an individual user. It's not meant to be a simple "find/wipe my phone" tool and requires a server side component to even work.
Samsung KNOX™ is the comprehensive enterprise mobile solution for work and play. With the increasing use of smartphones in businesses, Samsung KNOX™ addresses the mobile security needs of enterprise IT without invading the privacy of its employees.
Here's the brochure from the Samsung Business site.

That can't be used without additional server-side s/w. Are you going to set up this environment just so you can use Knox? If the answer's no, you won't be using Knox even though the client may be installed on the phone. And, since it's a business product, there's nothing to confirm that the Knox client is going to ship pre-installed on consumer SGS4's where it would useless. It may have to be installed by a company's IT department on Samsung phones they plan to control remotely. We'll never know because Knox won't even be mentioned in Samsung's consumer marketing and support info.

Here's what was said in the release article...
With the same technology used in Computrace LoJack for Laptops, Galaxy users can track, manage and secure their device. This solution is aimed at business and enterprise users. The details for personal users are still shaping up, but Absolute will be built into the Samsung Galaxy S4 firmware as part of Samsung KNOX on all devices.Consumers won't be able to use Knox without server side s/w that they'll have no access to. It sets up dual partitions on the phone; one for business related files that are controlled by enterprise IT and a second for a user's personal data. Enterprise IT has complete control over the phone down to the bootloader level. Why would any consumer want or need that type of environment on their personal-only device even if they could somehow manage to do it? If Absolute Software comes up with a way of enabling the functionality without the need for Knox it could be used on consumer devices. But "still shaping up" doesn't make it seem likes it's around the corner. And if the solution they come up with doesn't offer control of the bootloader it'll be no different than Samsung's current solution, Dive, which does all the same things except withstand a hard reset.
Don't click on the link in the first post. It's to a link farm site and riddled with malware. Here's the same story from another safer site.

Apparently Samsung's getting ready to roll-out the announced N3 Knox improvements (consumer use vs. corporate device management) to the SGS4. One of the new Knox features allows device owners to prevent the wiping of the device in the event it's stolen. That's pretty cool. But apparently there are some pretty big security and permission changes that are being put in place to make it work based on a 9/4 SGS4 update Samsung pushed out. These are the changes from Chainfire the creator of SuperSU and Triangle Away.
SELinux enabled and set to "restrictive"
A more secure bootloader
A new warranty status indicator inside the bootloader
Inability to downgrade once the new bootloader's installed
What does it mean? The N3's locked down pretty tight and not at a carrier's direction. It's too early to say what the long-term impact will be but the devs are working on getting the flexibility that's gone back.

i already preordered mine out of contract. This is really something that concerns me. I find flashing to be fun.(phones and self=) 21 days of pondering after being pretty dam sure on next phone.

I don't know for sure if Samsung has said one way or the other, but from a production standpoint, it would be easier to include it on all phones.
My main concern is that with a locked bootloader, adding a custom recovery is much more difficult. I prefer being able to create my own phone backups and use them as-needed. Android's stock recovery hasn't changed since at least the OG Droid, and therefore lacks this ability. Otherwise, my personal reasons for wanting to flash have significantly reduced since my first Android device.

Samsung KNOX & Find My Mobile
The new GALAXY Note 3 comes with enhanced privacy and security protection provided by Samsung KNOX. Users can activate Samsung KNOX with ease which allows them to run and store security-sensitive applications and data inside a protected execution environment called “container.” The security inside the container is strengthened by system-level protection of Samsung KNOX against malware and phishing attacks as well as hacking attempts on physical devices when devices are stolen or lost. For instance, important personal pictures or video can be stored in the container with no worries for data leakage due to hacking. In addition, users may choose to store enterprise applications and data such as corporate email, contacts and calendar and allow the IT department to manage the container through EAS (Exchange ActiveSync Server). These features make the GALAXY Note 3 an ideal device for BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device to work)
Furthermore, the GALAXY Note 3 is equipped with an improved Find My Mobile feature that allows users to disable the phone when it is stolen or lost. With the enhanced user authentication, the technology prevents stolen mobile phones from being reset to factory settings, and allows users to remotely track or erase the data from their lost or stolen mobile phones.
A user doesn't have to activate it but the hooks it needs and control over the bootloader it requires will be on every N3. The same hooks and bootloader changes were just pushed out to the SGS4 which is what has their forum up in arms. I'm guessing Knox was inert on consumer SGS4's originally because it required corporate device management s/w to enable it. Now that it's being aimed at consumers it's going to be on all Samsung's devices that can support it. The devs on the SGS4 forum are still trying to understand what the changes mean and how to work around them. It broke all Chainfire's apps (One Click Root, SuperSU, Triangle Away, Mobile Odin) so he's especially keen at addressing Knox's new "features."
Samsung had a big presence here at the Atlanta Airwatch Connect conference. They mention the new Knox capable hardware "burns in on hardware" when it is rooted and cannot be undone.
I'm not enough of a techie to ask them more specifics about how they accomplish this. But thought I would pass it on here so someone smarter than I can valid this claim.
I might just cancel my preorder if this is true.

We have been lucky with the s4 here in canada..non locked bootloader. The last at&t ota locked theirs down and they have root but thats all.now it seems the international devices are being locked down also.
I hope the CAN version of the N3 continues the no lock trend but I kind of doubt it. I planned or pre ordering but I think ill wait and see first.

Samsung is gonna be hurting if they shy away the regular Joe consumer to try and get enterprise customers. I would think consumers outnumber enterprise people but even if not true, Samsung won't get all thebeneterprise with apple, Microsoft and blackberry in the running also. I am hoping for an unlocked USA LTE band compatible with unlocked bootloader. My next phone needs to hold me until 64bit chips makebwaves on android and I think the note3 can do that in the meantime. The note2 probably could but I am smartphone techno nerd and the note 2 will be ancient history to me if I owned it more than 15 months.
Just thought I'd let you all know:
I have the new MH8 firmware on my S4 that has the new locked bootloader and Knox security.
I had no trouble rooting it, installing CWM Recovery and flashing CM10.2. All works fine.
The downside is that once you're on this new bootloader you cannot downgrade stock firmware using Odin.
That's the only limitation I've come across.
I can still flash any custom ROM, any custom Kernel and any custom recovery

XDA looks at Knox's impact to customization and shivers. The masses look at it as a safe and unique place to store their porn and a way of increasing the chances of getting their lost/stolen device back. We're 5% of the market and the masses are 95%. Samsung losing 5% of their sales is about equal to all the devices HTC will sell in 2013. We're opinion leaders and early adopters but we're not indispensable.
P.S. - I'm not agreeing with what Samsung's doing so please don't shoot the messenger.

I have been a user of Google Wallet Tap & Pay since it first started. I am currently running it on my Verizon Galaxy S3 with Alliance Rom 22. After all the painful process of getting it to work (NFC Fix, build prop, etc), Google is killing Tap & Pay on all devices <4.4. I'm a fan of Touchwiz roms for some of the features, but I don't want to give up Tap & Pay, especially as new retailers are finally starting to integrate it.
I will need to upgrade to 4.4.2, and there is still an issue with the current S3 NFC chip (NXP) not being compatible with the new HCE. Does anyone know of a fully working ROM 4.4.2, AOSP based, or a 4.3 ROM with this functionality available? Do I simply have to wait for 4.4.3, and lose Tap & Pay until it drops?
Thanks,
Alan
Since Verizon has their own competing product and never supported Google Wallet, I think your chances of having it in any version of Android except by hack, like you currently run it are slim. Its doesn't seem that Google really wants to be in this payment business anyway judging from the very limited market penetration and lack of retailer acceptance.
Host Card Emulation, or HCE is not a new chip, its a new method. It allows Google to bypass carrier rules that prevent an app from accessing something as integral as an NFC secure element. Instead, it would use just NFC safely. This means that Wallet users were no longer limited to Sprint or Nexus devices, so maybe there is a chance. But I see Google's lack of marketing for tap and pay as an indication that they may let it die unless they find more marketing partners.
For more insight into Google wallet fail mode, see this interview with its creators.
http://www.fastcompany.com/3021913/...llet-creators-reflect-on-its-failures-lessons
I agree with everything you just said above.
My question isn't if Google Wallet will be supported - it never has been on Verizon with the GS3, and likely never will.
While HCE does not require a NFC secure element, it currently does not support all NFC chips - there are numerous threads regarding this. Some device manufacturers have added code to make HCE work with the NXP NFC chip in other phones, however Samsung has not done this. The rumor is that 4.4.3 may add this coding.
What I am looking for is the best way to keep my Google Wallet hack options going forward.
If there is expected to be a TW based rom with the elements from 4.4.3 that will allow Wallet to work, I would go with that.
Otherwise, I may as well switch over to an AOSP ROM in the hopes that the next version will allow Wallet to work again. The deadline for the death of tap and pay is 4/14/14, so I'll have to make my decision soon.
Has anyone confirmed HCE working with SGS3 on a 4.4.2 rom? Or are we all dependent on the soon-to-be extinct Secure Element?
There is hope!
There have been some articles in the past few days about mounting evidence of a 4.4.2 update for the US versions of the S3. Both Mashable and JustAboutPhones have printed leaks of the update being in the final testing phase, with possible release in the first week of May.
Both articles quote support for NFC Tap and Pay.
With Verizon, this doesn't ensure we will be able to use Google Wallet Tap and Pay, as I'm sure they will do everything they can to cripple it in favor of ISIS. However, I'll bet code can be ported from a Sprint ROM that will allow a Custom TW 4.4.2 ROM with this functionality.
I hope Beans and the AllianceRom team will be looking at this - I miss my Tap and Pay.
Alan
Tap and Pay was very cool and easy to use. Main reason I rooted my Verizon S3. Lost that ability when I upgraded then soft bricked my phone. Got it back and rooted, and looking for a ROM to load that will support Google Wallet and Tap and Pay...

Hello everyone. I'm considering the gear s2 but I don't have a Samsung phone. I know it will work with other android phones, I'm just curious as to how much you lose by not running on Samsung. Anyone have more than one phone to contrast between Sammy and others?
I'd like to know the same thing.
I heart there would be limitations when using:
Build in Messaging, email apps --> cant reply from watch
I'm using a Nexus 5, and the email app and text/messages app is missing. That said, you CAN reply to both easily through notifications, but you can't create an email from scratch. You CAN create a text from scratch by using your contacts or "Buddy" app. When you get a call you can reject it, but you can't swipe to answer it. Not a big deal, since there is no speaker to hold a two way conversation. However, my android wear watch allows me to answer or reject, and I've gotten used to answering on watch which activates the speaker phone on my phone.
At any rate, it is my belief that using the S2 on a non-Samsung phone is pretty close to how it works on a Samsung phone, the good and the bad.

Right, but on a non Samsung phone I only get the option to reject, not answer (which for me sucks, but for most people is probably fine).
How does it play with play music?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
My Gear S2 Classic won't connect to my Nexus 5X.
I was using it with my HTC One M8 (EU Version).
Everything was okay more or less.
BUT, I also have the issue that I only can reject calls and not answer. This is not how a Smartwatch should work like. If I use my Bluetooth headphones and there is a call coming in I would like to swipe on the watch to answer the call. Bad Samsung!
AND the German support is very poor. Nobody felt responsible; nobody can create a ticket for development. So nobody will get noticed about that issue. They just wanted to tell me, that my phone is not supported, but this is not, what the Samsung website and marketing tells me.
Another annoying aspect is that sometimes the reconnect took more than 5 minutes.
Long story short, I will return the watch today. On the one hand because of missing compatibility and on the other hand because of missing support for not Samsung users. If they do not support when the watch is new, what will they do in a year?
I liked the design very much and some of the features, but yeah I want more for my money.
Also for 9 days (since 12 October) Nexus phones on Marshmallow cannot stay connected to S2's Bluetooth. You have to reset S2 every time S2 goes out of range of phone. Very frustrating...
Using with LG G4 and pretty happy with it. No native messaging or email app, but I'm not looking to create any texts or emails from scratch on a watch. Also SMS is probably my least common way of messaging someone these days so not losing much there.
You can reply with short messages to notifications which works great for me, especially for email. I think the only other thing missing is swiping to answer a call. S health works great, one of my favorite parts of the watch!
Also I bought the new moto 360 first and returned it, previously owned a Pebble. All touch navigation on a watch was just awful for me, I couldn't see myself enjoying the watch. So I decided to give S2 a try and I really like it so far.

I just bought a Gear S2 yesterday and I've run into this too with my Nexus 5. Super frustrated.
Yup, day 10 and still no way to keep S2 connected to phones on Marshmallow.
I have a Nexus 5X, yesterday i went to buy this S2......
but impossible, the samsung gear app not available for my phone on play store. i went to play store from apps.samsung.com/gear, because when i look for it is impossible, and from the web link to the play store and say that is not for my phone.
Is for the phone? for android 6?

interesting. I got my S2 while my Nexus 5 was still on 5.1.1 and the S2 worked fine (I had to get the Gear app from the Samsung Web link). Then on October 12, there was an update to the Gear app on the Play Store from Samsung that said it was their Marshmallow 6.0 update. I had been waiting for two weeks to update my Nexus 5 to Marshmallow just to make sure there were not Marshmallow bugs that were gonna brick my phone, like what happened to my phone with Lollipop last December. I finally decided to upgrade phone to Marshmallow, and the Gear app to Marshmallow, and since October 12, S2 will not stay connected to my Nexus 5. Samsung put out an update to Gear app on October 15, and October 16,and still could not connect the S2 to phone. 14 days later, and still cannot keep S2 connected.
Now I'm curious that your Gear app is saying not compatible with your 5X. They must have quietly(!!!) retracted Marshmallow support. If so, that explains a lot, and almost makes me happy, cause I haven't even been able to make them understand when I called them, that Marshmallow phones cannot stay connected to the S2. Now I feel that they probably know.
Needless to say I'm disappointed with the s2 paired to my lg g4, but I'm rather stuck; I like the hardware and watch control via the rotating face to much to return it, but lack of paid apps (and lack of free apps variety), and the fact that it's not running android wear are huge draw backs.
That being said, it does what I need, and that's time and date, notifications and can reply to them from the watch. I am looking really hard at the Huawei watch, but we'll see...

Then, with this info, we can say that app for pair the phone with this watch is not for android 6.
my nexus 5x is stock, all stock and the app is not available for it
only one thing we can do, wait, wait, and wait
