To RMA or not? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My n5 has some issues. I have 3 dead pixels and I seem to have signal issues. Even though I tried 2 new Sim cards, and live in an area with great LTE coverage(10960, T-mobile), I can hardly get over 5mbps. I definitely want to do an RMA but reading all of the horror stories here I'm indecisive. Also I don't have insurance for it as of yet.. Any suggestions?

I'm toying with the same idea.. my back cover feels lose and it makes a creaking sound... not sure if im being precious...

Honestly, I'd RMA it. You do have a right to have what you buy meet your expectations.
I had issues with a loud vibration and a non working led light and my replacement is much better!
My back cover was kinda creaky below the camera, seemingly on the flash. My new one isn't.
RMA it. You'll feel better after.

I RMA'd for dust under the screen (~6 spots scattered). My RMA arrived and has more and worse defects. =\ If you have to inspect it under a magnifying lens or clean room to find them and can live with them I would do that. I requested a 2nd RMA but have not heard back in 2 days, pick your battle or just wait it out for what others say will be better batches (I'm not confident..).

Should I exchange?

Got my Infinity 2 days ago and just noticed a dark blemish in the side of the tablet. It can't be from my palms because I've only used it briefly. Looks like the grey finish is wearing off or the spot was missed when it was sprayed with paint. Other than that, build is excellent. No loose screen, no cracking sound, no dead pixels and minimal light bleed. I don't know if this will progressively get worse with time. Would you guys exchange it or just live with it?

Yea, that's my take as well. Every tablet i got from them had qc issues.

Just got mine from Amazon today, it has 1 dead pixel, or maybe a tiny speck of dust. It it worth returning for just 1 dead one? Are dead pixels something that can multiply and get worse down the road?
Depending on the cause of the dead pixel, they tend not to spread. Even one would annoy me though. Most TV companies won't take it back over 1 pixel. I have an LCD TV that they wouldn't return because "it's not enough" lol. Is yours in an annoying spot?
It's not in too bad of a spot, towards the upper right corner. I did read through the SquareTrade warranty (haven't bought that yet) and theirs specifies at least 3 dead pixels for return, so maybe that's kind of a standard...
I did just find this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnDXpCXPjZ0 so I'll try that "fix" tomorrow
OP apply some CLR to that blemish and you should be good to go.
Honestly, if this is the only problem with your tablet, I wouldn't return it. Seriously, lots of people have reported issues with screen sensitivity, clicking noises on the corner or over the speaker when they press on the glass, issues with the docking station and so on. If all you have is a blemish, live with it. It's on the side of the tablet anyway, it's not going to be seen while you're using it and it most certainly is not causing performance issues. Plus, what if you exchange it and get a unit with one or more of the above problems but no blemish? Is it worth the risk?

IMO, at $500 even 1 dead pixel is too many. And, as far as TVs, one pixel won't be seen from a typical viewing distance. A tab, OTOH, is only a couple feet from your eyes...

There must be a hole between lcd screen which let an ant to go under it. Im sure that hole will cause some dirt to go inside as well which later can create something like a dust cloud inside. Those are common issue with htc device. Htc sensation exactly..but i never heard its happen to sammy product before..keep crossing finger..this is something to worry about

Have you been to the store to see if it is under warranty? And what they told you?
Supposedly the screen should be sealed. I think! Or not!
Just contact Samsung and ask them what you should do. Obviously this should not be possible.

I'll attempt blowing some can air into the speaker grill. If that fails ill contact Samsung cuz I bought this from amazon.
if it's still eligible to return, send it back to amazon and just say that it wasn't working properly and you'll get a replacement in a day or so.

Could have got in the micro sd slot and crawled around. I worked in the field years ago for a cable company, a lady called in and said her cable box LED display was cutting off numbers so 8's looked like 3's and so on. I went to here house and noticed about 20 roaches inside her box!

Hold a vacuum cleaner hose up to wherever you think he got in and maybe it will suck him out?
the memory card slot has always been covered...and i honestly cant see him crawling in through the speaker grill. its way too tiny
Maybe the charging port? Either way tablets are not air tight, and the ant got in.
Pretty sure Amazon can work with you as well, I have always had good customer service experiences with them.

Got the nexus. And one dead pixel.

First one. White 32gb. And I have one dead pixel.everything else is great. Its not too noticeable and I'm sure there are people out there with worse that do not know.
My question is would you send it back over one if everything else is good and you're happy? To possibly get a worse device?
And if I kept it. My one year warranty can't I send it back and rma on the 11th month if I really wanted?

Hell yea I would send a new device back over a dead pixel, you shouldn't have dead pixel.
Contact google about RMA asap, don't compromise about the level of quality of your device.
With the amount of pixels in these phones its very likely you will get at least one dead pixel. If it really bothers you that much then go ahead and RMA it. Most likely though you will get another device with 1 or more dead or stuck pixels.

This is something you could do of course. I would keep it if it werent near the middle of the screen myself but I would also factor in things such as CPU binning, as well as any other defects like the vibration motor. Don't know how common that is since I haven't visited that thread for a while but if I had a near perfect device with a high CPU binning and the pixel wasn't very noticeable I would accept it. If i had a cruddy CPU binning in i would certainly send it in hoping for a perfect screen and high binning. Its a surprise Google RMAs devices with 1 dead pixel. Most displays have a certain threshold that must be reached and its usually higher than 3.

Same here. I had one dead pixel...so of course did a RMA. I was like you and contemplated dealing with it, but then I realized I didn't get a discount for the dead pixel So the phone should be perfect.

Why? If you can get a free replacement with minimal effort on your part, why not?
I have 3 that I can see that are brighter. Look like stuck BUT even though I know where they are, I just can't see them at normal brightness levels. The density is tight enough that dust looks bigger. I am not bothering with RMAs. I guess I am not that picky.

I don't quite get how spending $400+ and expecting something to be exactly what you paid for is classified as "picky". Maybe you were raised with a silver spoon or something, but this isn't a $10 eBay purchase.

On my third Note 5 in two days...

First one had dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. Second phone kept getting the battery overheating message and would not let me use any apps besides the phone app. Exchanged for my third this morning...so far so good. Even worse news however, is that while I was getting my last phone there was another guy in there getting an exchange on his Note 5 for the screen going bad. He said it started out in the upper left hand corner and eventually just spread throughout the entire screen. He said he had the phone for about a week and a half. Needless to say, I'm slightly worried that Samsung may have rushed this out just a bit too quickly. Time will tell I suppose. Happy otherwise
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
I'm on my second. The first one had an issue with the glass not being fused with the display properly. There were small gaps between the glass and the display. Not really a huge issue but in certain colors you can notice it.
But most, if not all, devices have their issues and bad batches, defects etc..
I just posted about me being on second note not even in a week. Screen went dead, flickers green.

I personally think Samsung rushed this device and we're paying for it. Disappointed. .. but still like it over my S4

Notbing to be shocked about. Everything has a error rate. Some note 5's have defects, most do not.
I am a technician at Sprint retail location. I have seen all these issues, but very few and far between. It's not anything that I'm worried about, as I purchased a note 5 as well. Sometimes you get some bad luck.
My wife's new Note5 has had a few spells where it wouldn't ring for incoming calls or text, any thoughts on this?

Also make sure her network connections are set to LTE/CDMA and not Automatic. I've had a lot of service issues come in due to being set to automatic.

Thanks, I did set it to lte/CDMA but haven't done the ##72786# thing yet. It's done it twice, she's had it for a week now. You can call her and it goes straight to vm and not even ring.
If the problem persists, take it into a corporate store and have them 14 day exchange it for a new device. I would give it a few days after re-provisioning (the 72786 code) to see if it happens again. But be sure to do it within those 14 days (day 1 does not count, so it is 14 days after the day of the sale) so you are guaranteed to get a new device, although I am sure there aren't any reconditioned devices for the note 5.... yet.
edit: a word.
Thanks, yeah this Note5 was a replacement for a broken Note4 through asurion. Other than this little hiccup it's a very nice phone.

Yeah she likes it, I do too to be honest.
In that case, you have device protection, where if it is not working they will replace it in store. Just try to do it within 30 days where it doesn't hurt the tech's numbers.
But yes, you did get lucky, but not very surprisingly seeing as Note 4, even reconditioned, inventory is non-existent. Quickest I've ever seen a note series phone go off planogram and end of life.
Samsung can't fix these phones.
Sent mine in for the bottom of the screen not working, they say it's BER, and they can't fix it NO MATTER WHAT I WANT TO SPEND. I asked the guy over and over "If a board in my Samsung TV goes bad, you will replace it, but not in your flagship phone?" his answer was no they won't fix it.
They say it has water damage, which is hilarious. I MAY have pulled it out of my pocket, in it's case, in a drizzle once and in 3 weeks it's ruined?
If you don't have an otter case or something that completely encompasses this phone to keep the water out, I suggest you get one.
I've dropped a phone in a tub of water that is still working fine, a few drops on this phone and it's done.
I have to agree, I bet this phone gets a really bad reputation pretty quickly for being a super poor design.

All Note 4's are being replaced with Note 5's. If you start a claim online right after confirming you had a Note 4 it says it will be replaced with the Note 5 due to them not having Note 4's anymore.
Well my mother in law went to a sprint store having issues with her Note4, they had to order her a new phone and they sent her another Note4.

Sprint stores use a different company for replacement devices vs. Asurion. I do know that we are still replacing Note 4's with Note 4's in store, though it is on back order. Asurion is probably giving out Note 5's due to their vendor not being able to get an ample amount of Note 4's to offer next day replacements.

Lower half of screen has red tint - replace?

So I noticed today that the lower half of my display has a red tint, and now I can't stop noticing it. It's apparent in both night light and regular display modes. Do you think this is something they will send a replacement for?

use that premium 24/7 support and report back how it was handled. we're all curious how it goes...
On first attempt, I used the chat function. They kept asking for a screenshot showing the red tint, but a screenshot doesn't work like that. Then after 45 min, I was told that this is taking too long and that I would get an email. I asked about a warranty replacement, and was told that is an option if this doesn't resolve.
I just want a warranty replacement...
I'll just call the Google Store during their business hours, obviously the 24/7 support and the Google Store are two different things.
Keep us posted.
I'll be calling the Google store first thing tomorrow, but in the mean time here is a picture of the issue. It's much more apparent in real life, but you can see the right side of the screen is darker than the left.
Just a quick update, they are sending me a replacement device. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have issues!
Good call. Yea that looks pretty bad, I would have returned it in a heartbeat.
Let us know how the replacement is. I have a XL and the top half has a pinkish hue. I'm debating if I should exchange it or not. I have noticed it on every device I've ever had with Amoled to a certain extent or another. It's for sure not as bad as other devices I've had. I'm debating getting it replaced. I'm just worried if I do the next one will have it worse, or a different issue that's worse. But for the amount of $ we paid for the phone it should be perfect IMO. I'll tolerate it on a $400 device.. not a close to $1000 device ($946 to be exact with tax)
Dunno. Ide exchange. I have had perfect amoleds on my note 5 and 7. Its possible to get a near perfect one.

I have the exact same thin on my Pixel 5 inch. Could it be the adhesive for the screen/digitizer needing time to cure? I read that in several places with some older phones and iphones. I might give mine some time and then send it back if it doesn't settle... Is anyone else having this issue? Or can anyone else confirm if their screens are perfectly uniform using a white screen?
Just went to a Verizon store and noticed the display models don't have this issue, I'm planning to get mine replaced...

I wouldn't worry about getting charged... there were a LOT of 6Ps that got exchanged for the same defect and I never heard of anyone getting charged. I went through 4 Nexus 6Ps before giving up on the lotto and getting a 5X. The issue seems way less prevalent this time around, but OF COURSE my Pixel has an uneven screen. Its not as bad as any of the 6Ps I had, but I've had my Pixel since Monday and I just can't live with it. I ordered my replacement yesterday. So far, everyone that has gotten a replacement between here and the XL forum they have been defect free! Fingers crossed.
