I've already selected LTE as the network mode under mobile network settings, but as I type this I'm on 3G. I know I get 4G in this area, but it's not exactly the best. My goal is to stay connected to LTE even when the signal is worse than 3G. I did this on my Galaxy S3 by toggling the LTE setting that CyanogenMod 10.2 allows you to do from the quick settings panel, but the stock Nexus 5 ROM doesn't have that option.
How can I force my Nexus 5 to stay connected to LTE even when the signal is worse than 3G?

It should prefer LTE all the time. Make sure your APN is correct for LTE on your carrier.

Shame on all of you for discovering this !!! AT&T DOES not want LTE folks selecting HSPA+ when in an LTE area. They want to be able charge you more for data!!!

Would be even cooler if it was a widget to do this.
But still, how does this save money? If you use the data you're gonna use it. Downloading an e-mail uses the same amount of data no matter how fast you get it.
I am curious though that if this helps save battery if you know you're in an area with spotty coverage...Maybe it won't be hunting for LTE when you know there is no LTE, which could save battery maybe?
I sill have poor performance inside my apartment. So weird. It says 4G and even 4G LTE sometimes but I don't have internet. I just turned on the WiFi ... but still, calls with static (though they work) and my wife never had these issues on her iPhone. Really disappointed but fortunately the issue goes away when I'm actually mobile. I wonder if I switch to a different setting if it will improve indoors or not. --edit-- THIS indoor setting, not all "indoors"
This does not work, guys. It didn't work on the GS2 either. It defaults back to an LTE option every single time. If you are in an HSPA area, you may THINK it is working because your connection remains HSPA, but I assure you that it is not working.
In an LTE area, I stay in LTE, no matter how many times I try to switch to HSPA using this method.
Just set up a HSPA APN and make that the default. Then you will only be on HSPA untill you change it back to the LTE APN

Is there a HowTo on this?
Those sneaky bastards. They are found a way to auto change it back to AT&T default for the GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto selection. No matter what I select it defaults back.
AT&T Got creative on restricting this phone those a**holes.
From my understanding the S4 chipset on the One X is integrated with LTE so there is a lot less power drain that other chipsets with LTE. It might not be possible to turn it off if they're both working on the same radio. Or even if you do manage to turn it off, there might not be as big of a battery performance boost as with other LTE devices.

that doesn't really help too much. what's your screen on time? i got around 3hrs yesterday. still calibrating my battery though. seems to be lasting me about a day (12hrs +/-) with LTE always on which is great imo.
It seems when I'm in a different area and I get h/h+/3g that my battery drains more than when I'm at home using 4g? Why is that? Or am I just crazy...
It's probably because when you're out and about the phone is searching for a signal. That uses a lot of juice.

+1, when the phone is not on 4G (LTE) it is constantly looking for 4G, if you are able to change your radio mode to WCDMA via the CM settings (if you are on CM10) theoretically, it should not continue to search for 4G. I don't have the experience to see that this is the case (battery savings)
Oh so the culprit is searching not the signal itself! Ah well thanks guys! I appreciate it!
I've been trying these steps from another post but it won't work with slim bean

That depends on the radio. ATT radios are RAT locked so that doesn't work. Also USSD codes don't seem to work on AOSP based ROMs.
Thanks to csschmit I spelled it wrong but can't find the post.
I do the toggle from Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode and change it to GSM/WCDMA and it will force HSPA.
If that doesn't stick, and immediately switches back to LTE, click Network Operators and it may take a long time for the search to complete, if it completes and you don't see AT&T try again over and over until it does. Once you finally see AT&T, click it and it will say "Registered on Network" and the toggle will now work. Even the "use 2g to save battery" will work.
It takes a long time for me to get AT&T to show but you only have to do it once per reboot provided you don't toggle Airplane mode.

2g is only edge, you will not get higher speeds when it is checked, and supposedly has the best power savings, you can always have data off until needed which would be the best battery saver
Update: 4/13
I was just able to figure it out and for the most part. The basic problem is that my network mode was stuck on GSM/WCDMA. Here is the solution:
1. go to settings/more.../mobile networks/network operators.
2. Once you click network operators, it should start searching automatically. If nothing comes up, then hit "search networks". FYI, sometimes, it decides to act wonky, so you'll have to exit out and come back in to get it to work. Eventually, it'll show you carriers in the area. Being an AT&T customer in Philadelphia. I saw three results. The first two were AT&T. The last one was T-Mobile. I don't think there is a difference in the AT&T options, but I just clicked the first one.
3. Once that's finished. Go back to the "mobile networks" menu and click on "network mode" and change your preferred network mode to LTE/GSM/CDMA.
4. The last step is change your APN. In the "mobile networks" menu, click on Access Point Names. Click on ATT LTE pta. Scroll to the bottom and click on APN Type. Change that to default, admin, fota, mms, supl, hip. Then hit okay. Hit File and Save. Then just select the circle next to ATT LTE pta. To be honest, just selecting ATT LTE PTA might be all that's necessary. You might not have to edit it.
Now, here's the catch. All of this stuff resets (with the exception of the edited APN) when you restart your phone. But it does work everytime.[/COLOR]
So, I just got the skyrocket (AT&T in Philadelphia) and have the 03-24 nightly on it. But for some reason, I can't get LTE to turn on. I've played with the different APN's. I've flashed the at&t radio on Chopstick's webpage, but no dice. I'm only getting H+.
I even called AT&T to make sure my data plan was LTE provisioned.
The only thing I can think of is that the ROM currently cannot change preferred network mode and mine is stuck on GSM/WCDMA preferred?
Please help.

How old is your SIM card?
When I got my Skyrocket, all network modes except LTE worked.
It ended up being an older version of a sim card that didn't support LTE.
Swapped out for a new one...no issues since.

I doubt that's the problem. I actually flashed back to Stock this morning and LTE worked great. I had speeds around 35mbps. However when I restored the backup of the CM10.1 rom, same issue. Only gettings H+ and speeds around 2mpbs.

Try doing the following just to see if you can pick up LTE at all. If you do whats below you will not get any voice calls until you change it back since voice does not use LTE. Hi
need your help, I have tried everything..
I can not connect to 3G
I tried to flash image factory/set correct APN setting with the operator/switch radios/replacing new SIM.
didn't helped my!
When I connect to 2G everything works for me, calls and online.
When I switch to 3G, I have no service, it writes me Unavailable operator.
It get stuck on the "Search" when I try to search manually.
When I try to go back to 2G, it is still stuck on "searching.." and I have no reception! Only reboot fixes it and I can go back to work with 2G.
It is important to note that when I take out the SIM I can find operator on 3G.
How can I fix the problem or even understand what it comes from?
I have Nexus tool kit, maybe I can sent you Catlog \ bugreprot?!
Thank You in Advance

I don't have LTE in my country yet, and my operator only have 2G (no EDGE)
If you choose LTE on your phone, it supports all lower versions (i.e 3G / Edge) ! So you must get Edge (2G) !
LTE option doesn't force only LTE !

Should not be a problem with the 3G frequencies of both models 820 \ 821.
