Google Search - Latest Update
v3.1.8
Changes:
It officially brings Search version 3 (3.1.8 to be exact) that shipped in KitKat to all devices running 4.1+. This includes an updated UI, new refresh animation, among other things.
Because Search houses the Google Experience Launcher (GEL) inside, this update also brings GEL to all devices running Android 4.1+. All you need to do after installing Search 3.1.8 is install the launcher app from here, and voila - GEL for all, not just KitKat devices. I have it running on 4.1, 4.3, and 4.4 on both phones and tablets, and it finally looks perfect.
As I mentioned above, 3.1.8 completely fixes the wonky GEL layout on tablets. As you may have seen yesterday, several things on the Nexus 7, for example, were out of whack - the keyboard was popping when you tapped Home, the icons were old, and the Search box was off-center. All fixed.
Remember: GEL does support transparency in the navigation and status bars, but you need KitKat for that to work. And Google disabled it system-wide on the Nexus 10.
New cards:
Website update card
News topic card
What to watch card
Traffic incidents using Waze on maps.
Recurring reminders.
Real-time scores for rugby teams
See when your packages are ready for in-store pickup.
You can now bring back dismissed cards by pressing Undo.
Download
The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

"Google Search Has Stopped" on CM10 4.1.2. :S

Google Search Has Stopped
Still Google Search Has Stopped when i try to use GEL... Xperia S jelly bean 4.1.2

Same problem here, google search error. Lg Optimus G 4.1.2 (10b-260-06 soft).
Edit:
I have no problem instaling google search update, but i dont have that conversation mode, so "send a message" command dosent work.
The reall problem starts when i instal the launcher. I see a new menu tab settings/ i can choose the launcher, but when i select the google i get the google search error

Put the google search apk in the system\app folder. This will fix the issue

How? :cyclops:
I mean, maybe I dont understand, so please tell me. I have LG otpimus G 4.1.2 with root and SuperSU PRO and I instaled total commander. I copied
com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-3.1.8.914827.apk

to system/app but i can't instal it from this directory, ive got an error. SuperSU gives permision to total commander.
i messed up?

In running stock root 4.1.2 on my moto photon q and I the same Google has stopped error. However ( and I am slow sometimes so this could be really stupid but) when I look at the properties for the launcher it says target SDK 19. In my build prop my SDK is 16 so I changed it to 19 and instead of the Google search has stopped I get the touchless control has stopped

If you have Titanium Backup, you can just locate the app in there and select the option to convert it to a "System App".
Otherwise, just locate the INSTALLED apk (not the download itself) and move that to /system/app.

I love this update, I've been waiting for a totally handsfree Google now interactions for a long time.
Now you can say text <name> and them it asks if you want to send it. All by voice

I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened too, its occurring on my T-Mobile Galaxy S4 and is very frustrating. I've tried clearing data and cache and even defaults on the Google Search in the application manager. I'm calling Google right at 8am.

I'm also having launcher issues after this update
This update was pushed out to me yesterday and I'm having the same problem where it won't honor the default launcher. I've tried several different launchers, I've tried clearing the defaults from all of the launchers and even uninstalling all launchers except for the stock Touchwiz, but it hasn't helped.
I have an AT&T Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2. This is a very annoying issue.

Same here!
I have a problem with the 3.1.8 update. Every time I use Google now and press home, it asks me for my default launcher. Even if pressed always. It does it every time. I've cleared defaults of the stock launcher, and it still does it!
Once I uninstalled the 3.1.8 update, it works fine again. It seems to be a bug that affects some Samsung devices.
I wish they can fix this soon, I love the GEL launcher!

Same Here - Possible Solution
I also was suffering from the "Default Launcher Issue" with Google Search 3.1.8 on my Galaxy S4 (Android 4.3). However, my wife's (identical) phone had no such issues.
In order to see where the problem lies, I first uninstalled all non-stock launchers, including GEL. This did not fix for me (but may for other phones).
Second I tried the app Launcher Switcher from the play store to see whether it would be able to fix the problem. To my surprise, when opening Launcher Switcher it showed three Launchers to choose from rather than the two stock ones. In addition to Touchwiz and Touchwiz easy it also showed the Subway CA app from zippyyum. While the Launcher Switcher did not fix the Default Launcher Issue, uninstalling the Subway ordering app did the trick. Pretty strange that the Subway app registers as a launcher.

Omg! That did it! I didn't know that I had a rogue app that presented itself as a launcher. Now my gel launcher is working great! Thanks so much dude!

[APPS / PORT] LG P990 Apps for Your G2X - Launcher, Widgets, the whole shebang!

Alright, I've got a passel of LG apps fer ya here.
NOTE: I personally will not be including these in a Full Rom, but I believe jboxer may be looking at doing so. If you're a Rom developer and want to use my ported LGLauncher, feel free to do so BUT include credit!
NOTE 2: THESE HAVE NOT BEEN TRIED ON CYANOGEN BASED ROMS AND PROBABLY WILL NOT WORK ON CYANOGEN BASED ROMS!
Now, a FAQ:
Some of these already worked?
Yeah, some of them did I believe Music already worked, but the widget didn't since it required LG Launcher. Several other bits worked even without the launcher.
Is this the full LG Framework??!??!
No, it is not. It is missing several key pieces of the LG Framework. Thus, do not expect the LG Lockscreen or the LG Status Bar widgets to work any time soon. Those things are heavily integrated and cannot be separated from the Roms they are built on. Porting would be possible (from what I've found) but it would be a huge task.
What the heck DID you do then?
Well, at this point, I've just ported the Launcher - and having that has allowed many of the LG stock apps to work out of the box, in addition to the ones that already did.
Wasn't there a thread that already included these?
There was - in APRIL! Those were Froyo versions, these are all Gingerbread compatible, and seem to work better. Also, the Launcher was not ported previously.
But didn't someone already port the LG Launcher?
Only a much older version from another device back in 2010. I was not able to find the Gingerbread version of LG Launcher ported. If someone else had done it, I didn't know about it.
What about the THEME?
My screenshots are of BakaG2X running a theme I haven't yet released that has been ported from the P990 V20L (GB) 2.3.4 stock release. I still have a couple of theme issues, and a severe bandwidth shortage, so it hasn't been released yet. jboxer's 2.3.4 Colorized Rom offers a similar theme from LG. Though, really, the theme could be ported by anyone with experience in theming.
What about LG-Cam!?!?
I knew you were gonna ask. No, no and NO. Go to the LG-Cam Thread for that.
What's Required?
Most require the LG Launcher. The widgets will NOT load in a stock launcher, even if you have LG Launcher installed. This is of course how LG designed it. Some might work outside of LG Launcher. Also required is an LG based 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 rom. The downloads will not show up on other roms. That means no cm7 etc. I have not tested on those platforms and probably won't be able to soon.
Okay, what works, what doesn't?
Be warned that even if it is listed under "WORKING" that simply means it appeared to work when I tested it! There are VERY LIKELY bugs and issues that I have not found, even major ones! So consider "Working" to mean you can install it and try it!
Working: - u can d/l these
LG Launcher
Widgets - Analog Alarm, Analog Clock, Bookmarks, Calendar, Clock & Weather, Contacts, Digital Alarm, Digital Clock, Memo Widget, Message Widget, Music Widget (req. LG Music App), News Widget, SNS (fb/twit/myspace) Widget, Today Briefing Widget, Today Schedule Widget
Apps - LG Alarm Clock, LG Memo, Music, SNS (fb/twitter/myspace), Voice Recorder
LWP - Firework, Galaxy, Magnetic, RainyDay2, Space, TreeInSnow.
Working with Notable Issues - u no can has these
Mirror - Loads and works, but image is rotated and distorted.
LG Keyboard - Works but force closes Language & Keyboard Settings. Not included here for that reason, but there's a flashable on the BakaG2X thread.
Not Working (may or may not be fixable) - u no can has these
Bubbles & Christmas LWP - Force Closes
LG E-Mail - Force Closes
On Screen Phone - Force Closes.
Lockscreen / LG Settings Panel - lol, don't even ask.
Where the heck can I download this stuff!??
You use BLOATER to download these. Bloater can be downloaded from Roman's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149391.
LG Launcher, Apps & Widgets are located under the "LG Apps" section. LG Live Wallpapers are located in the Live Wallpapers section.
Why don't you make these available outside of Bloater?
Honestly, I could. But, I think Bloater is very easy to use and it prevents having to educate people on how to install APK files through adb or root explorer
Apps with "NOTABLE ISSUES" or "NOT WORKING" status are NOT available for download at this time.

NOTE: If you have bugs, do NOT post unless you can tell me how to reproduce the bug. Ie, what did you DO when it crashed/had problems. Kthx
NOTE 2: IF an app doesn't appear to install or show up, you may need to uninstall and re-install it. I haven't included error checking in the download scripts, so it is possible your phone got an incomplete download. Also, remember, the Widgets REQUIRE LG Launcher!
Just to summarize (and reserve the post)
1) If the app is on the WORKS LIST, you can download it with Bloater. Apps/widgets with ISSUES or NOT WORKING are NOT DOWNLOADABLE but are listed so you know the status.
2) If an app/widget from LG P990 is on none of the lists, feel free to ask about it.
3) If you're asking about LG Cam, go away.
4) You download them through Bloater.
Edit: I am aware of of an issue with lg music crashing if you autorotate the phone to landscape. I would troubleshoot it but iam am staying away from my computer right now because tethering sux.

I have not tried LG Launcher on CM7 based Roms. It probably won't work, as there is actually some of the LG framework present on the G2X stock roms.
I can't test it as I am on a tethered internet connection right now and downloading something as large as entire rom on 2G/EDGE speeds is pretty much impossible.

[Q] Google Play Services

When I checked my Galaxy's file manager to uninstall an app, I suddenly saw "Google Play Services" installed. a 3.15 mb app. What is this for? I read on the market it is automatically installed? But, I didn't see any updates on my notification bar to install this, it just popped on my file manager.. I uninstalled it, but it installed again without any notification for it to be installed... please see attachment to see what im talking about guys.. Thankz!
I think that the 3.15MB file is the latest version of Google Play. It NEVER alerts you when it is downloading, updating, or complete. So just to let you know, it is likely to update again. If you are in GPlay at the time, it will force close with no warning.
That is not a defect in the app, but that is simply how it behaves. I flash many roms weekly, and sometimes daily, and this behavior is common among ALL fresh installs of any rom.

I received this envelope icon on my notification bar and it isn't my gmail, when i scrolled down my status bar i saw the envelope and had some Chinese words next to it. is this an ad or spam? how would i solve this annoyance? I installed some apps yesterday and deleted them hoping this envelope notification would go away. This envelope only appears when i switch on my wifi. I also sometimes get this folder titled "ppy_cross" and sometimes some random numbered folder. Even if i delete these 2 folders, sometimes it woud return when my wifi is on.. I also read that Go launcher apps such as themes and keyboard skins have airpush ads, could this be true because i do have Go Launcher, and I had that chinese envelope thing on my notification bar, could this have any relation?
Hmm...can't really tell with the Go Launcher issue. I never had this problem, but I do get the Airpush ads with Go launcher and its products installed. Did you try a XDA or Google search for ppy_cross? That might yield the best results, if any.
Could also be spam that filtered through from somewhere
Google play services is some app to better unify and use Google plus and +1s I believe. Something to that extent.

[APP][ROOT][2.2+] Emoji Font & Keyboard Installer

Emoticons on Android have always been a bit of a weird topic in terms of compatibility. For years now the people of the nomoreboxes group have been trying to solve this by porting over the Japanese fonts with all the emoticons and unicode objects within them to Android, and my aim with this app is to make it very easy to install them and a keyboard to input them
Emoji Installer
What does Emoji Installer do?
- In one tap it installs the font and xml needed for you to be able to see emoji and unicode from iPhone users and others with the font. This is extremely useful if you have friends who have iDevices and send you icons, but you just can't see them!
Features
- Easy, 1 tap installation
- Font supports Android 2.2 and above
- No messing with root file managers or permissions, no need to even download the font file manually
Note: an active internet connection is required at all times to use this app, it's used for downloading the fonts (main font is 13mb, addons are about 1mb each) as well as checking the IAPs
Play Store Description said:
THIS APP DOES NOT GIVE YOU COLOUR EMOTICONS! THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE IN A FONT AND MUST BE IN THE FRAMEWORK OF YOUR DEVICE'S FIRMWARE!
This application installs the font and keyboard required for inputting and viewing emoji on Android. Please read the full description for information on how it works and what are In App Purchases
In the free version of Emoji Installer, you get the ability to install the font from http://nomoreboxes.ws fully automatically, after pressing the install button.
If you choose, you can buy the in app purchases for the following:
Emoji Keyboard £0.60 (or equivalent)
This installs a keyboard for easily inputting emoticons into any text field, including messages. Message your friends with iPhones and they will be able to see all of what you send
Emoji Keyboard is Android 4.0+. Anything below that will not be able to purchase it or the value pack
More Emoji £0.60 (or equivalent)
This installs an extra emoji font, from Android 4.2 with a few tweaks, which allows for more emoticons to be viewed and for some to be Android themed, including almost all of the faces to be cute "Andy" the Android robot icons
Value Pack £1.00 (or equivalent)
This is both of the options in one, saving almost 20% from buying them separately.
As the Emoji Keyboard is Android 4.0+, anything below that will not be able to purchase this item
Want to see those emoticons and unicode icons but end up with boxes or blank spaces? This app is for you! It installs the font required for Android to be able to see emoticons and unicode items on apps such as the following:
Messaging (SMS and MMS from even the iPhone and other devices)
Palringo (Including almost all of the unicode items and iOS users' emoticons)
WhatsApp
Kik
Facebook
Twitter
Google+
Any other apps that use emoticons and unicode, even those from iOS users
Supports iOS smiileys from iOS 5 and 6 also!
Disclaimer: if you encounter any bugs with the font, that is out of my control, as this app only installs them. However, if you encounter bugs with the installation such as force closes or the app hanging, please e-mail me using the contact details below, I will try to help

Please look at the app, it is not paid. I have talked about this with other RCs and you are allowed to post it as it's free with IAPs
Also, display of emojis is NOT built into stock Android, you only get a very small amount. Go onto a service like Palringo and you will find there's loads you cannot see.
Please read and use common sense before accusing me of things

In android 4.2 and 4.1 there is a font included called "AndroidEmoji", which displays some but not others, the font this installs displays almost all of the others.
Also, I'm talking of AOSP here, not any OEM build, which may or may not have a custom TTF.
I've been looking though this stuff, and I know for sure that this is the case, otherwise why would a free app be needed to do nothing?

Please read it again, this app is not a custom app for anything a stock device does, it installs a font on your device that allows you to see almost all emoji everywhere, which by default even 4.1 and 4.2 don't do

I've just made a few server sided changes to fix a bug that meant on some devices the keyboard is not activated by default after installation. If anyone has issues with this after now (after installing again), please contact me
Seems you can't activate a keyboard with code, expect an update very soon which allows you to activate it manually shortcutted from the app, but for now, go to Settings > Language & Input and tick the iWnn box, accepting the box
Just pushed another update (sorry for so many!)
Minor UI fixes
I also fixed the bug I mentioned above before
Just submitted a new version to the Play Store:
2.0 (24/5/13)
Brand new download UI
- Gives you the status of the download
- Much more reliable
- Should fix bugs on the HTC one where it jumps all downloads
- Added an automatic reboot and helpful activation of the keyboard after the reboot
Fixed bug where it would download the wrong extra on some devices
Fixed a couple of UI bugs/typos

Hi
Is this using unicode (new) Emoji compatible with IOS5+ Windows Phone 8 & Jellybean or softbank (old) Emoji compatible with IOS4- and not a lot else? Cheers!
edit: looks like softbank, or at least the free bit is anyway.
So basically this replaces the emoji font for yours (wich i assume has more emojis).
I'm running Android 4.1.1, wich has smaller emojis (bigger ones where introduced in 4.1.2 update). Probably what they did was update the emoji font right? Is it possible you can do this with your app?
I'm testing your app and i see the small emojis i want the bigger version

Is this using unicode (new) Emoji compatible with IOS5+ Windows Phone 8 & Jellybean or softbank (old) Emoji compatible with IOS4- and not a lot else? Cheers!

The main font supports all emojis but a few, including those sent by iOS people, so I assume it uses the new stuff

Hi,
I've had this reported a few times and I think it's down to one of a few issues:
- My server wouldn't let that file be downloaded
- Your internet connection broke just as it was downloading it
- Some other issue caused a break and it crashed because of it

Just pushed an update to the play store:
2.6
New sliding drawer - Accessible by sliding left -> right on the main screen or by tapping the app icon
Includes:
- Information on what everything does
- Feedback button to make it easier for you to give feedback
- Share button
- About section
Holo theming for dialogs coming soon!
Bugfixes
I know the update has more than doubled in size, I will aim to reduce it in the next version!

How to set default launcher on marshmallow update 12/28/15

So your ready to change the default launcher but google isn't letting playing fair (shame shame google).
Don't worry I gotcha. Lets jump into it. There's two methods you can try and they both work about the same
it's all up to you, now is a good time to remind you that you take all responsibility for what your doing
to your Nexus player.
So the first method is the no root method (which I give 75% of the credit to vlasp for a post he made). Very
simple install the launcher that you would like to use but more importantly it has to have the ability to be
set as the default launcher. Some launchers don't have this ability it's very important. Next connect your
nexus to your computer and open up a command prompt and type this:
Code:
adb shell pm hide com.google.android.leanbacklauncher
If you want to undo it type this
Code:
adb shell pm unhide com.google.android.leanbacklauncher
I made a very poor quality video here showing how's it's done.
So the second method requires root.
First thing of course is to install the launcher you wanna use and update the leanback launcher (if you still
want to use it). Open up Es file explorer and mount everything as read/write. Now navigate to /system/priv-app
and delete the folder leanbacklauncher. Reboot and that's it.
HOW TO HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TO
If you still want access to the leanback launcher and/or have settings in the app drawer download the settings
and/or leanback shortcut attached to this thread and install it. You'll now have the a settings and/or
leanback launcher shortcut in your app drawer.
Thanks to breakthecircuit and unvaluablespace for some great ideas.
If you have an icon that you think would look better than the ones included in these apps post them on here and
check them out. If they look good I'll switch them out
If your curious about the app-release it's just a standard launcher built from the sdk with some slight modifications.
<rant> marshmallow and android tv are terrible<rant>
This does work, so thank you for that. The big downside tho is that you have no access to the system settings app if you are using XBMC Launcher as I am in my case.
This is what I did:
Before deleting/renaming the apk for LeanbackLauncher, i pulled a copy of it to my laptop with ADB. I then installed XBMC launcher and configured it. I then renamed the leanbacklauncher.apk and rebooted the system. Kodi started just fine. I then sideloaded the copy of leanback launcher i pulled earlier, so that it shows up as a launcher option when i press the home button. Unfortunately it doesn't show up in the Android Apps section of Kodi, so we'll have to try something else.
What i'm doing now is restoring the Kodi backup I made from my FireTV.
In the favourites.xml i added this:
Code:
<favourite name="LeanbackLauncher" thumb="androidapp://sources/apps/com.google.android.leanbacklauncher.png">StartAndroidActivity("com.google.android.leanbacklauncher")</favourite>
I have no idea whether or not my favorite will work as it is still restoring, and it's a fairly large backup. I will edit this post when the restore finishes to update whether this is a viable solution. With any luck, we can keep Leanback as a backup so we can manage apps and settings and use kodi for everything else.
EDIT: So that didn't work. I will keep playing with it and update if I find something.
You gave me a great idea. Thanks Here's an app called settings. it's 24kb installed and all it does is open system settings
mved app to first post

Has anyone tried this but with a different launcher like halauncher? thats the one i use but i downgraded back to lollipop cuz i was having too much issues with marshmallow, so i cant try it personally. but it sounds like xbmc launcher is just not seeing it as an installed app. i wonder if halauncher would? personally i wouldnt mind keeping halauncher as my default home launcher and just getting into leanback launcher and settings when needed.
I don't think leanback launch like settings app has a launcher or leanback launcher activity so if you wanted it to show up you would have to use an app like the settings app app I made that opens it up. Or something that makes shortcuts or a regular home screen.
I fixed it!
So, the settings app is genius. Thanks a bunch for that. It will probably do all that I need it to, but I really like having the old launcher too just in case. So here's what I did:
-Decompiled leanbacklauncher.apk with apktool
-Edited the manifest so it launches the activity like a normal app
-recompiled/signed the apk
-sideloaded
-Profit
The apk i've attached makes the app show up in Kodi's "Android Apps" list and allows me to launch leanback back to the launcher.
The downside of this is that Leanback is no longer a launcher option, so it cannot be made a permanent launcher again without uninstalling my apk and reinstalling the official one.
I've included the original launcher as well in case anyone wants it.

Hey, great work, but it does not work on my shield
Does it need to be rooted to function?
I accessed it on a USB drive through ES Explorer, but it could not install it unfortunately.
EDIT: I now see that this was for the Nexus Player, i did not notice, i google myself to this thread..
I did have to root my nexus player for that to work, yes. I had to remove leanback from the system apps and install mine by itself. I'm sure something similar can be done with the shield tho.

I honestly haven't used the xbmc launcher one thing you could try to be certain is to install the launcher on the first page and xbmc then run the adb hide command push the home button and if the xbmc launcher is there your good to go and you can uninstall the other launcher

I'm running into errors when recompiling my android tv apps using apktool. I'm on the latest build. Did you experience any issues when recompiling?
EDIT: I just didn't clear my old framework files from userdata, all good now!
I couldn't get the modified Leanback Launcher app from the nexus player to install on my shield tv so I have just extracted mine from the shield, decompiled it and copied the manifest info over from yours darthcircuit. I've recompiled and signed it and it looks to be ok but I'll test it all properly when I'm back home later. If this one works on my shield tv I will provide links for anyone else that is interested.

I'm glad you got it figured out i don't know if i would have been much help. I was mostly guessing when i decompiled and recompiled. I'm no dev by any stretch. Yay for the powers of google-fu.
I'd be interested in trying your leanback launcher. Mine works fine it seems, but it also seems to try to start listening to the mic when i open the app.

Mine installed ok, no errors like before, but it just closes instantly. So back to the drawing board with that. I've not had time to look at it since but I'll take another look asap.
I'm not a dev either, I have done some basic programming in various languages but I'm not at a level or have much experience with linux/android.
UPDATE: I just thought I'd come back and let people know that since I had the MM update on my 16GB Shield TV this method and the leanback apps work fine, so that seemed to solve the issues for me! Thanks for all the info on here

Are you running it from your computer or in terminal?
Have you tried the home switcher app in the store?
Anyone tried running this on a Sony Android TV? It runs MM 6.0.1 , so presumably it could work.
The problem with Google's Leanbacklauncher for Android TV's is the priority setting of "2" in the intent filter:
<intent-filter androidriority="2">
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
Apparently only system apps can have priorities higher than "0". If / when they do, Android will take the higher priority apps over lower ones.
does the root variant work for you with newest leanback version?

Launchers for MTCD

Howdy!
Partly because the latest Malaysk rom comes with one installed launcher, and partly because I haven't really been happy with any of the standard "China launchers" I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread with alternatives. I'd like to keep to the car-oriented ones, since there's a million possibilities if we include everything. Feel free to include car-specific themes for common launchers though. Please include theme file or setup instructions if you do.
I tried to find apk's for the other launchers that used to be included by Malaysk, but failed to find them so far. If anyone else can find links for me, I'll include them in the next post.
The Launchers
Jy launcher (2?) - Included in Malaysk 7 - Links anynoe?
Jy Launcher, other version (?) - Attached to this post - Screenshot

There are some launchers on the filserver here but I don't know much about them and there are no descriptions.

I've got premium, but I don't think the default launcher does anything on the head unit, and it doesn't appear in the "home" setting either. On my pad it works like it should.

Works fine for me, runs a touch slow but does run like a launcher. You can run an app (forget the name at the moment) that you can set any app as a launcher, and do it that way, to either avoid issues or premium.

Nice and clean Anything car-specific? Mind describing your setup a little?
I would like to get the REAL Joying 5.1.1 launcher. The one that Malaysk uses is actually just a prototype that Joying offered originally as a test and no longer uses on their 5.1.1 builds.
The Joying 5.1.1 launcher looks like their traditional launcher but they have gotten rid of the weather section below the clock, and added function buttons, do access volume, settings, brightness etc. That makes a bunch more sense to me on a device that is not always constantly connected to the internet to get updated weather info.
See this example of what CarJoying 5.1.1 looks like now.
I have tried copying the Launcher2mtc2.apk from the joying dupdate, but it just ends up looking like the old version with the weather at the bottom. There must be some other trick or something they are using to make their launcher have those function buttons.
I wish I could figure out how to make that launcher work like that on Malaysk's build.

Default launcher issues
What a coincidence that this thread was started today. I was about to start thread on the subject myself when I could not find anything that addressed my needs.
I prefer a launcher that can be customized to taste and looks and feels like the launcher I use on my Note 5, Nova Launcher But Nova isn't suitable for use on the HU because it cannot be configured with the dock on the bottom.
I've tried many other launchers as well.
None of the OEM launchers that come with Malaysk's ROMs can be configured to simulate Nova Launcher with a dock on the bottom.
Most other launchers don't allow a bottom dock, either. Apex launcher promises a bottom dock in the premium version, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to do it.
ADW 2.x beta premium can simulate Nova Launcher best and be configured with a bottom dock. It's not perfect, but it will do.
My beef with ADW is that it's exceptionally slow to load at bootup, and even when you set ADW to remain in memory, it's still slow to paint the screen once you push the home button .
To add misery to inconvenience, it and every other app on the HU now runs at a snail's pace since I updated to the most recent stable Malaysk ROM. It can take up to 10 seconds to get the volume to change after it's turned up or down.
So here are my questions:
1. Is there a solution to the speed loss in general?
2. Does anyone know of a launcher that suits my needs and is quick to load?
3. Would it help to replace the stock launcher(s) in the ROM with ADW?
4. How do I go about replacing an OEM app in ROM with the app of my choice?
Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions.

@SirOrigami:
Thanks for taking the time to help me.
As I said, I use Nova on my Note 5. I prefer it over the others I've tried and would like to use it on my HU. The reason I can't use on my HU is because in landscape mode, the dock is on the right side, as far from my hand as it can get. I prefer to have the dock on the bottom because I can reach certain apps more easily, and because I want look and feel consistency between my phone and HU.
Has this been addressed in an update I didn't know about?
TIA

To be honest, if your are expecting to customize it with like you can a phone you are going to be disappointed. These head units require extremely stripped down and lightweight launchers, and you will be far better off if you stick to using one of the ones purpose developed to run on them instead of trying out ones designed for phones and tablets.
