How to FIX Vibration Motor Loose - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, i'm here because i have (like lot of us) a problem that i think we can easily solve. I bought a nexus 5 and it was faulty, i requested RMA and the new one that they shipped me has the same problem: VIBRATION MOTOR IS LOOSE and sounds weak and crappy.
So, i've seen a teardown video of nexus 5 (easy to disassemble), and somewhere in the web i read that fixing this problem it's easy because the motor is simple to access and because the weak sound is caused by lack of adhesive on it to maintain it properly,so can i ask you where is the vibration motor and how to fix this problem? anyone of you have already done it? a video?
and most important : do i lose warranty if i open the back cover?
is that one the vibration motor?
THANKS to all

Hi there, I also have this problem with my Nexus and am quite PISSED THE F**** OF about it!!!!! I'm very sorry to hear that your second unit also has this issue. I'd suggest contacting google about a second RMA because it's not fair to to you to have a defective phone you paid hard earned money for. To answer your question it really should be VERY easy to repair the loose speaker. Simply follow along with iFixit's teardown here: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016 the vibration motor can be seen here attached to the backplate: http://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/SJQTUlA5iTNuxHlb.huge it's the metallic circle underneath the camera flash lens. My assumption would be that if we opened our phones the vibration motor has likely separated from the backplate in which case you would just reattach it with some glue, not really sure what glue to use though. Still though my point stands that you SHOULD NOT have to do that!

Thanks for helping me and for your words... I think exactly same thing .I'll ask a refund tomorrow, but Google quality control and service is not good.

Mine started like that, but after a week or so of use it seems fine, nice and tight like the N4 or any other phone... Maybe just take some bedding in?

Has anyone actually taken it apart and fixed this issue?
My motor sounds like there's a piece of something hitting it as it vibrates. I'm thinking about opening the phone up and seeing what's up.

I just received my N5 and also have a very "plastic-y"-sounding vibration. From what I've read, it seems to be a common issue that would likely be present in an exchange device (or it would develop again over time). In other words, it doesn't sound like it's worth it -- at least until it has been confirmed fixed in newer ones.
With that in mind and after also seeing how easy it is to take apart and get to the motor, I'm very tempted to crack her open myself. I'm hopeful that a dab of super glue (or something more appropriate) would fix the problem. It would be nice to hear the results from someone who has done this, but if we don't get that, I'll probably do it myself and report back. Unfortunately, I'm traveling this week, so that won't happen for several days. Anyone else able to try this in the meantime?

anyone managed to get their vibration working properly ? Mine just started sounding cheap and loose.

i received my nexus 5 from an European amazon, and the vibration motor was faulty, so i asked for the replacement, and they sent me one, that had dead pixels and a massive light bleed, so i was reading and i found that the vibration motor is glued to the backcover, so i open both phones, switch the imei stickers inside the backcover and, i put the good vibration motor in the phone that was perfect except for the vibration, and that solved my problem
Sorry for my english

So the motor itself was faulty ?
I tought it could be the glue or adhesive that they use that was not holding the motor in place.

I checked and the faulty one was well glued as the working one, so it was the motor itself,

Back plate replacement
Are the back plate and the edge of the front plate easy to scratch when removing the back plate? What did you use for the job? Thanks!

Sorry to bump an old thread,
but has anyone tried this and was it successful?
Thanks

[Q] something rattling inside my transformer!!!!

just been using google skymap and I've noticed there is something rattling inside my transformer!!!!!!
is the back removable? anyone spotted a way something could have got inside? or is it something broken inside?????
its not been dropped or anything ........ and I've only just started noticing the noise .....
you sure it isn't edge creak? if it really is ratteling return it.
not a creak. something moves inside the unit from one end to the other. only started tonight. thing is I have no light bleed no sharp edges ....... don't know if its just something got in through a gap somewhere or something snapped off inside
My opinion would be return it, sure it could be harmless but it's still a faulty product. It could also **** up your device later on or be a sign of more ominous things.
I know you are right .... but I bought it from comet and it took long enough to arrive so god knows how long a replacement will take
and sods law ill get light bleed or gaps or sharp edges next time
ill ring comet tomorrow

If you enable and disable the camera it makes a sound. Try activating camera ....is that the same noise you hear?

I know there are 2 openings right under the LCD itself cover. On the left hand side there is tow half inch hole under the LCD, if you take a piec of paper and insert it at the left hand edge and sort of drag it down...you'll know where the gaps are, but this is too small for anything to go through...maybe these are air vents.
its not the camera. I'm sat here web browsing and if I rotate landscape and portrait it hear something moving.
not sure I follow what you mean about the holes. wondering if something has got in through the keyboard dock points???
It's probably baby teeth. I hear they're good luck.

Or the hamster fell out of the wheel
Sounds like another asus QC story, i wonder what crazy stories will come next?
Good luck with getting it resolved.
Photo cameras have mechanical orientation sensors that are making a noise when going from landscape to portrait but they are very quiet and I doubt they are used in phones and tablets which have accelerometers.
this was something definitely moving about..... ie traveling the length and width of the unit.
its stopped now though so I haven't got a hope in hell of persuading comet that "my unit was rattling, honest! "
don't worry about persuading comet...just give them a call and they'll replace it...
I asked for a replacement yesterday..and I believe the support guy had no idea what a light bleed is, and he tole me parcelforce will come my home with a new TF on Monday..
damn.... after a week of no rattling its started again. I'm convinced its just a fragment of plastic or something and apart from that the unit is perfect .... no light bleed or dead pixels or dust ....
do I risk exchanging?
I wonder how easy it is to get the back off?

You might try a magnet and see if you can move the fragment within the case. Of course, it could use aluminum screws but metal will have more mass than plastic. If it tends to roll easily, I would suspect a metal fragment.

That's a good way to screw up other components inside your device. I wouldnt do that if I were you.

Weird sound from touch cover

Hi all, I posted this in the Q&A section but no one answered...
My touch cover makes a sound when I press the keys.. no it's not the "pop" sound from the OS.
video: youtube
Is it normal and does your touch cover also do this?
Never heard anything from mine or anybody else's except for the sound that the OS makes...

Wow, that is weird. They should be silent. Are you near a Microsoft store? I would think that would be swapped on the spot. And dissected.
There is a thin, pressure-sensitive layer which will deform a little bit under pressure (this is how it registers your keypresses) but it's almost invisibly thin and I've never heard anything before. Agreed with schettj on this one, although since it works anyhow if getting it replaced would be a hassle, you might be able to get by.
Has the cover ever gotten really wet? They're almost entirely waterproof (you can clean them with a damp cloth just fine, I'm not sure about a running faucet), but the contacts at the top are not sealed and if water got in there it might "squish" a bit.
Thank guys!!
Thanks everyone!
im 500km from the nearest ms store... :S guess I'll have a small trip soon...
just hope the replacement I get will be okay...
BTW my touch cover never got near any water..
Thanks again!!

Replaced cracked screen, rear camera focus no longer working

So I was clumsy and dropped the phone, screen shattered horribly. Ordered a new OEM screen + housing, and moved all the components over (was incredibly easy).
Only issue now is the rear camera won't focus. it tries, but fails. Front camera is fine. There isn't much to the camera, it's a module with a ribbon cable. All I can think of is I must of smudged the lens or something. Or perhaps the heat gun I used to melt the adhesive messed with it.
Anyone else have any ideas? I'm brainstorming at work before I head home and pop the cover to take a look.
Examine everything around the camera connection, make sure no resistors are knocked off or anything. Also, try to do a factory restore, its rare but sometimes software can get buggy after disconnecting parts. Clean the connection with a tooth brush and alcohol. And if all else fails replace the camera.

I popped the cover and didn't see anything obvious so I ordered a new camera (all of 13 bucks haha). I am almost wondering if maybe the camera got killed along with the screen when I dropped it. The OIS seems like it may not like being jarred too hard.

I think he meant to update the thread with what the solution to my problem is
I think the camera module got messed up either when I dropped it, or because I had the heat gun cranked up too high. The gun I have is really far too powerful for this type of stuff, I should had used a blow dryer. Live and learn!
Anyway, I ordered another module that will be here this week, and I'll update the thread if it resolves the issue. I'm sure it will, not really anything else that could be wrong (knock on wood)
I believe you could have possibly scratched the connectors. Please update us

The ribbon cable connector? anything is possible I suppose, but it went on and off pretty confidently. It is possible I scratched something on the camera module PCB board. There isn't really a good place to pry it up from the adhesive.

Did the camera replacement solve your issue?
thanks
Yes it did. Ends up the heat gun I used was a little too powerful and had melted the adhesive behind the lens on the camera.
New camera module for 10 bucks fixed it.

A bulge/bump on the back cover

Hi guys,
I got my nexus 5 a while ago and notice theres a bulge on the back cover right under the camera, i emailed google and got a replacement but it has the same bulge.
Will it cause any issue? The bulge is on top of the vibration motor.
I googled it and found some others having the same issue but nothing else about it.
Attaching the picture of it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
since you googled about it and found others but nothing else about it.. tell me, is it really an "issue"? i did check mine regardless, and dont have a bulge.
Even I checked mine and it doesn't have any bulge whatsoever.
Isn't there a clip there? Push down on it and it might click into place. Maybe it just wasn't installed correctly from factory.

hmm... so its a rare case... and i have 2 of them...
I too think its a plastic defect, when i shine it on the light, it looks like a patch on the cover.
but its right on top of the vibration motor, so i wonder if anyone know will that cause an issue or not
edit: lol.. just did some test, the vibration motor is loose.... another RMA..

open up the case and check if the lock is properly locked in, there is a lock on the place you mentioned, I've had the issue and i opened up and found it was not closed properly (ironically by the service center guys) and i closed it back on. Check if the vibrator works all the time or only when you press down on the bulge(if it does it's not a huge issue).
Guys don't waste time RMA'ing, just a simple fixable problem which anyone can do if you want to know more about your device and it is a bit of a learning also.

[Q] After replacing the screen, earpiece grill is not working

Hi there,
I replaced my broken screen with a screen+frame which has the grill on the screen. However, after replacement, I can not hear any sound when somebody calls me. I need to use the speaker or the earphones to talk to somebody, pretty annoying. Do you have any idea what I did wrong or missing?
Thanks.

Did the speaker grill have any coating or covering on the inside? Perhaps you either disconnected or tore a ribbon cable that was connected to the speaker (if there was one)? I had similar issues with my screen replacement, but had issues with no cellular signal. I'm going to have to take mine apart again to investigate. I would suggest the same for you...

Hey, I had the same problem when I first replaced. The solution is easy. I forgot to plug in one of the cables which apparently increases the cellular signal. See the pictures attached.
I can not open the grill, for the sake of not opening the screen from the frame I bought the screen with frame and grill. So this defeats whole purpose.
Anybody has any idea about it? Is there a special connection for earpiece speaker?
Are you sure you have the ear speaker installed ? I don't think you have to open the screen to change the speaker.
In step 19 in the iFixit guide they remove the speaker BEFORE they remove the screen.
By the way where did you ordered the screen + mid frame? How is the rest of the quality ?

Hey Thanks for this. I installed it as well but still not working, interesting. I'm going to reopen try to fit it again.
I bought it from here: aliexpress.com/snapshot/6480736262.html?orderId=65692759745232 - DHL sent me the item in less than one week.
There is also alternative: vifocal.com/lcd-display-digitizer-replacement-with-middle-frame-for-oneplus-one-64gb-16gb.html
Quality is ok, I had ghost swipes before. It's not happening any more. Maybe because of software fixes (I'm on CM12 nightly, Lollipop). Apart from that, the colors are a lil bit washed out. I got used to anyways Sometimes under bright light (outdoors afternoon), greens look so weird. Overall I'm satisfied because I dropped the phone a lot in the past and mid frame was full of scratches. Now I have new mid frame.
Here they said the ear speaker is extremely fragile so i think it's
possible you broke it.
How is the speaker connected anyway ? I diddn't find any connector in the teardown.

But contact the seller that you didn't get an original one. You can get a refund. And write him a bad critic on aliexpress that it is not original so he can't trick more people.

it might not be the original one but it saved me from the time without any phones. I gave him a good rating etc. Asking for refund would be unfair in my opinion.
Yes I also saw that xda recommendation, maybe I broke it I don't know. WIll give it a try tonite. Ordered an earpiece speaker just in case from the aliexpress for 6 bucks, but i'm sure it will take at least 1 month to arrive.
