[Q] 16 Now or 32 Later? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend of mine has been having increased issues with her ancient Verizon GNex lately and drunkenly ordered a 16GB black N5 from the Play Store last week. Her contract isn't up until mid-December, but her phone arrived today. My order (32GB black) says it won't be leaving the warehouse until December 3rd. She is afraid she's going to be too tempted to port her number to T-Mobile and risk an ETF with Verizon, so she isn't even opening the box. She is wrapping her phone up and putting it under her Christmas tree until her contract runs out.
She just proposed swapping with me. She said she would pay me the difference if I wanted hers now, and she would just take mine when it arrived.
The impatient side of me is really intrigued by this proposal. I am currently using a 16GB N4. I've never run out of space. I'm in an excellent 4G market, and I stream all of my music. I don't play games. The thing that takes up the most space on my device is podcasts, which can easily be managed better than I manage them now. Plus, I would be able to have an N5 in my hands tonight after work.
On the flip side, $50 is a really low price to pay for double the storage space. This screen is bigger and prettier, so I might be more tempted to throw a movie or two on here (would I?). I do have a 32GB N7 (13) that handles most of my media consumption needs. I mostly ordered the 32GB version out of laziness. Going 32 essentially meant not making a decision. But I do want this thing to be very future-proof (even though I'll probably buy next year's device as well).
Anyway, if you're me, what do you do? I'd especially like to hear from people who already have a 16GB version in their possession. Are you happy with 16? Do you wish you had gotten 32?

I have a 32gb right now, but the only reason was that I was impatient and didn't want to wait for the 16gb to arrive. As of now, with about 100 songs and 10 downloaded apps, I still have 21gb available.
At the time, I also really needed a flash drive since mine just failed, so I thought an extra $50 for a 32gb flash drive wasn't too bad anyway.
The point is, unless you store 10 1080p movies with a bunch of other stuff, you're never going to fill up the 32gb of space. 16gb should be more than enough for normal usage. Actually, I never used the 8gb of space on my N4.

You have a 16gb right now and arent finding yourself wishing you had more. To me that is the answer to your question. If you needed more you would already know it, you wouldnt be 'wondering'. As for futureproofing, you also said you will probably get a new phone in a year.... so thats not really a very long future.
I think you are mostly impatient, and trying to justify jumping on this offer which to me isnt that compelling of a reason. It is more emotional than logical as far as how i personally weigh decisions. I am going to say that my personal decision was no doubt that I wanted 32gb. I have tons of mp3s, large game installs, and I DONT have the ability to use the cloud for everything all the time. So really my personal choice is very different but because we have different situations, it is also completely irrelevant. LOL
It is ironic that patience is the driving force for both of you. hehe, she is afraid she will be tempted to switch her contract even if there is a penalty so that pushes her to NOT want the device now, and you DO want it now based on that same challenge. I definitely think you have less to lose by giving up the space, especially since she is paying the difference. whereas if she caves and switches providers that is a BIG ding in the wallet.
TLDR: if 16gb is enough for your current device, it will be enough for another year. :silly:

32gig for 2 reasons..
1) I agree, $50 cheap for double memory
2) My 32gig said will ship in 3-4 weeks... I got it in 4 days. I mean yours may come way faster than you think

I think the part of me that wants to say no to her is mostly driven by the fact that I don't like my impatience driving a decision, as Tweak properly pointed out. Then there is also the reality that this thing (my order) could very well leave the warehouse well before December, as Tomey points out. My friend's wasn't supposed to ship until November 26 as of yesterday, and it arrived today.

[Q] Would this SD Card be ok?

Saw this 32GB on eBay just now and it's an absolute steal for that price.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160525594986
Just wondering whether it'd work in my phone (i9000), and whether it'd work well. I know that it's not gonna be great quality, but I was thinking about just sticking music and bits like that on it so I don't need to carry around an iPod with me too.
Check the feedback.. There is a lot of bad feedback, and it seems to be mostly for computer products. Mostly all of their good feedback is from jewelery sales.
Assuming it is an original product though, yes.
Yupp, thanks for pointing that out to me. Comments seem to say the stuff is fake.
its fake don't buy it
Almost all of those "deals" on flash memory on ebay are fake. You'll end up getting a 1 or 2gig card that is made to look like a 32gig card. Don't buy it.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
The Chinese writing on the packaging screams "FAKE!"
I wish somebody or some organisation would take eBay to court for being an accessory to fraud. Perhaps they would stop allowing this then. Look at these guys feedback it is obvious there is a serious problem.
I wouldn't be afraid of buying it. if its fake, i'd sent it back, and get all your money back. ebay and paypal is really good at it. never lost any money on fake stuff yet.
i bought a 32gb "supposed" sandisk one from ebay before christmas, came from China, when it arrived the packaging was awful, but the card worked.............for around 30 seconds, tried putting anything on it and it died and was no longer showing up on anything
basically they are naff, you may get one that lasts for a while, i personally wouldnt bother, i paid £11 for mine, it took 6 weeks to get here, worked for less than a minute, and took 5 weeks for a refund due to the utterly awful postage service returning it to China

Resale value once S4 comes out?

I'm in the market for an S3...looking to pick one up used since I'm still under contract (and don't want to lose unlimited data anyways). With the S4 coming out in the next month or two, do you think the used price of the S3 will significantly drop (say by $50 or more from it's current going rate)?
Maybe, values drop once a new model actually comes out.
You'd think for the first 2 weeks. But probably level out

Right, but if its something like $20 then I'm not going to worry about it. Was hoping maybe someone who buys/sells a lot of phones would have an idea.

If you're talking ebay no. The HTC Thunderbolt goes for more than that. Even the original Droid..... Ohh you mean a 50 dollar price drop.... not 50 total.. I'm dumb. I'd say maybe by August or October it should be that much less on average, but it's really an up and down market on ebay assuming that's what you're referring to.
If you check eBay at the right times you will find really good deals right now (not this exact moment). I saw a good condition white one sell the other day for 270. You gotta know when to find them. Like for instance some days everyone wants blue pebble other days everyone wants white. Look for clear photos and don't just get the first one thou find
Your best bet will be craigslist. And yes the price will drop if you are vigilant enough to catch it when it does

Were I looking for an S3 when the price drops following the release of the S4, I would be looking for another 32 gig version.
Yea, the S3 lets you use the physical microsd card as it should be used - expandable, optional storage - without the headache of losing app structure.
Just because you can just swap cards out at a whim doesn't mean you'll want to open it up to the environment all the time. There is definitely a certain amount of data I want always there, and 16 isn't enough. 32 isn't enough.
I'll be getting a 64 gig S4 for sure, I've only had 32 gig S3's and still wouldn't get a 16 instead of a 32.
Up to you OP, but i'd use the internal memory size as the first qualifying point, and then look more closely at what was left.

+100 to this. Just snagged a 32GB Dev Edition off CL for $280 lol.
I am sure that the price will drop the once the S4 comes out, that is the nature of technology. Question is whether it would be worth the wait? If you have to wait 2-3 months to save 50 bucks? Get it now and start enjoying it!
It will stick from 200to 300 on eBay . may find it cheaper on CL.

I have a 16GB Razr Maxx right now and a 64GB microsd and never had any worries about space. The microsd fits all my music, pics and vids with plenty to spare, and I have 7 out of the 8GB usable internal storage free (the other 8 is used for system and apps). So I'm not too worried about internal storage size.
There hasn't been much available on CL in my area, and I'd personally rather pay the little bit extra on swappa or ebay and get some protection behind my purchase. I actually just picked one up on swappa since Verizon hasn't mention a thing about their S3 and I don't want to wait another month or two.
I just traded an original Droid RAZR + $60 a few days ago for a GS3. Still complete w/ box & accessories and in great shape. Granted, the RAZR was also complete and had a fancy case. I have seen plenty of these GS3's for $300 on craigslist(mostly the ATT / T-Mob versions). Although GS2's are maintaining a steady $200 so I doubt the 3 will drop much more anytime soon.
Hell, I sold an HTC HD2 a few months ago for $250 and that phone's like 3 years old now(then again, it does have a bit of a cult following)

Nice to know at least. My Rezound has a 64GB micro sd in it also even though the specs said it can't go higher then 32GB
Makes you wonder about the spec accuracy on any given phone... õ_Ô

Really... You couldn't use a better word than guesstimate?
CraigList for the win! I get all my phones off of there. Once the S4 comes out people will be selling their S3's within a week. Prime time to get a good deal.:good:

i9500 32gb coming to UK. Here's what a phone shop says...

Me: I spoke with someone in sales yesterday, who surprised me by saying the S4s you sell (Voda please) are the 32GB model. I can't see any confirmation of this online.
Him: Do you know who it was you spoke to about this, as we only offer the 16GB model
Me: Ah, thought so.... Any word on when you or Voda will sell the 32gb one, as that's what I'm holding out for?
Him: The 32GB hasnt been released yet, as Samsung are still trying to get the S4 in 16GB over here properly (its been a bit of a nightmare) but it should be within the next few months
Me: Oh, so they're struggling to supply enough 16gb models that 32gb ones will take a few more months?
Him: In a nut shell
Me: If that's the case, what's the best case or worst case for waiting for that 32gb to arrive on our shores?
Him: If I was being optimistic I'd say around July, but thats just me going off a few online rumours, so far we've had nothing concrete from Samsung
Me: OK, so best case July, worst case later... or never!
Him: However you do get expandable memory on the S4 so you can increase the 16GB to whatever you like
Me: That's a shame, as not knowing how long to wait for a 32gb that might not even arrive tips me towards the One.
Him: I love the One, is it as great choice
Me: True, though the SD card's for data only – my concern is fitting my apps into the 9gb remaining internal memory.
Him: Apps take up mere MB's really, when you consider that an Xbox game is around a few GB's, then Apps take up nowhere near that amount as they're alot more compressed
Me: Do you have plans to sell (whether Voda contract, or off contract) the i9500 model? I know, I'm being picky here... I'm hoping you'll one day stock the i9500 32gb
Him: We do, however we're again playing the waiting game there too
Me: Will that option be available on contract too? And how long do you think I'll have to wait for you to get them in?
Him: As soon as we have it it absolutely will be available on contract, as thats the largest market for handsets. Unless we take a massive U turn in business practice haha
Me: That's great news to hear that we'll have i9500/i9505 options then. I guess it's just a matter of waiting impatiently for Samsung to get those to you then.
Him: It pretty much is, we're all in the same boat as retailers at the moment
Me: Thanks for your help today... at least I know there's some hope if I do hold out for a couple of months.
Him: My pleasure!

32gb owners, how will you cope with no exSD?

Preorders are now live! After first ordering the 128gb, I decided to switch for the 32gb + device protect, for the same price. If image quality is full in the cloud, theres no reason to keep photos on the device taking up space. I don't keep video's on my device. Now the only thing competing with apps for me is music:
I have a 35gb library in the cloud, and would like to keep a bunch of it offline. I would really much like to use one of those wireless sandisk SD cards to connect to my offline library when I need it, and just use streaming otherwise. Is there any way something like this can be integrated in the play music app, where you can select the wireless storage as the offline location? I dont want to get crazy with OTG, and this would be a great solution is it is possible.
Looking forward to meeting all the new pixel owners
Not everybody is so comfortable allowing google to have access to ALL of their personal data. I sure am not, but at the same time, I don't fault them for offering it. Forget device protection -- I get that kind of insurance provided by my credit card on all purchases. Bought the wife a 128 GB, since she's something of a shutterbug. If the thing had an sdcard slot, I'd have gone for the 32.

Great tip though, going to check my banks now
Just tried to order the black xl 128gb and saw it would ship out 6 to 8 weeks. NOt sure if I can wait that long and with verizon bootloader unlockable effin sucks!!!
How much space is actually free? Since there are actually 2 system partitions (one active and one for shadow update) I have the feeling that there is even less available for use...
i have nexus 5x 32gb and I did just fine. i don't even use the cloud for pics/videos. and now with unlimited cloud storage for photos and video, and seeing how I upgrade yearly, i'm not even worried about storage space.
i went with the really blue 32gb. super excited!
i am definitely torn between 32gb and 128gb.
i have a 32gb 5x as well, but i kinda came close to filling up my internal storage for the first time (mostly photos/videos of the kids, but also some downloaded music and podcasts). before this phone, i'd assumed that 32gb was as big as i'd ever need, but now i'm not so sure.
that said, i don't need MUCH more than 32gb (almost certainly not 96gb more for an additional $100), and the cloud photo storage thing might actually solve my issue... so i'm leaning 32gb right now. but given that i'm paying a premium price for a premium device, is it silly to cheap out on storage?

I have the same doubt...
Lets say that feature consumes 1GB...I would change that feature for the GB that presumably requires without thinking ( I don't care to reboot my phone once every month after the security patch).
Now if it uses less space, 500MB, a 32GB device should be a problem.
If you have a 5G data plan, you don't need lots of storage space.
I am happily using a 8G Moto E2 since I dropped and cracked the screen of my old Nexus 6., while waiting for the Pixel.
Apps does not take up that many space. A few big games takes up 1-2G each, but I only install 1 or 2 of those big games at a time. (I can't play games on Moto E2 )
Spotify, audio-book, podcast, downloaded contents takes up another 1-2G. I deleted the audio after I consume them. (Moto E2 has external SD, but I only used around 1G)
Google Map offline data takes 500MB, but you rarely need more than 1-2 map at a time.
Video and photos takes up most of the space, but since Google offers unlimited full resolution backup, you don't have to store them on the photo.
The only limitation is save up movies or TV show for offline viewing in flight, but I have to carry an external SD reader.
I've had 32gb Nexus 5x for the last year, did not come close to filling it up. I will be fine.

I usually have various ROMs, backups, movies, etc. on my phone. I have found that I often push beyond the 32G. On my N6 with 64G, I have about 20G free and I just cleared out some movies and backups. As just a reference, TWRP backups on my N6 are about 10G each.
I've had no storage issues with my 32GB 6P so I'm sure I'll be fine.

Annnnnd I cancelled and ordered the 128 gb.
I had the HTC 10 which was the first phone that had expandable storage. Having a Nexus phone for such a long time, this seamed strange to have an sd card. I have got into a habit of transferring my largest files to cloud or a usb drive. TWRP back-ups are a big issue. I keep only one back-up, having a Nexus 5 for the past 3 years.
Its all manageable LOL
Like.. unless your hording mp3s I don't see a storage issue with 32gigs.
Then again i stream all my music and backup photos to the cloud. But that's the future/now of doing things.

64 would have been ideal. If it was a $50 upgrade to 64gb, I would have gotten that one. 32gb is just too little without a SD

Also coming from the HTC 10 (+200gb SD card), which is being returned. HTC 10 was $600, has expandable store, front facing speaker(s) (kinda), and free damage warranty (vs Pixel's $99 + $79 damage). So the Pixel a $650 + $100 for expandable, + $100 for the warranty is a lot more for arguably less.
I'm going for the Pixel for 2 main reasons: the HTC 10 is just too big at 5.2" + capacitive buttons. 5" + virtual buttons on my M9 was perfect. They also really f***ked me over. I had a cracked M9 beyind use, and needed a phone fast, so I decided to trade in my UH OH and get the HTC 10 for a $100 credit. Now apparently for the entire month of August, they did not let any customers apply UH OH credits on the HTC 10, despite letting me redeem the code and *delete* my warranty. I have this in writing from them from a BBB dispute. They refused to even return my warranty to the M9, to use as a spare, after I bought the HTC 10 WITHOUT using the code. I wont ever buy a HTC phone again (dont remind me -_-), and if anyone wants to file a class action please message me

thats all I do. I stream as well, but I like to keep 10-20gb of my favorite albums on me at all times. Streaming doesn't always offer a seamless transition between songs, and I often angrily take out my phone and fidget the play/pause button confused as to why it stopped.
I'm on the fence currently. My wife wants a new phone and I had convinced her to wait to see what this looked like. But it's really expensive at 128gb and she fills a 32gb storage card every month. It is going to come down to how good that camera is and whether it beats the S7 enough to warrant the money and the lack of SD.
I think 64GB is an ideal size for me. My current Nexus 5X is a 32GB phone and it always prompt that I am running out of space.
i really hoped they have a 64gb available...
Hey guys/gals FYI the max available storage according to Android Central is 23GB. I should be fine but the details are here http://www.androidcentral.com/google-pixel-heres-how-much-space-you-really-get-32gb-models

Should I buy the Pixel XL Now? - April 2017

Hey everyone,
My Nexus 6 is at it's end. I'm losing 1% of battery life every two or so minutes. My battery lasts about 5 hours or so. I would prefer to get the XL from Google. It's still so damn expensive. Should I just pull the trigger and get it? Does anyone think there will be deals in a couple of months since the Pixel 2 will be coming out? I'm torn about what to do. If I get the Pixel now, will it be obsolete in a year? With insurance, the payments on the phone would be $40 per month putting the phone at $960. I'm just not sure if I should pull the trigger or wait it out. I've had the N6 for over two years already.
Any advice is welcome.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't shell out that much cash even spread out over time and even for a 128GB , much less for the 32GB. Although the ideal Pixel for me would be the XL 128GB, I settled for the non-XL 32GB because at the time (I know it's not likely now an option from anyone right now), $240 straight out for the Pixel 32GB was just too good to pass up. Personally, although I really hate not having a MicroSD slot or at least 128GB storage, I overall regret having bought two HTC 10s for $500 each the day before I became aware of the Pixel deal. If I had known just how much I would like the Pixel software (but I'm still rooted and on PureNexus ROM), I would have seen about canceling or returning the two 10s.
I may not be the wisest money spender but I'm just not willing to fork out that kind of money for any phone. I already told myself before I sprung for the 10 and the Pixel that if you just wait long enough a deal you can't refuse presents itself, and I re-learned that lesson just a day after buying the 10, which was a deal itself - just not as good a deal as I would have preferred.
The Pixel will not be obsolete in a year, though. If I were going to get one now, if I couldn't find a "can't refuse" deal on a brand new warrantied Google version (unless you don't care about root or can get a pre-7.1 - or was it pre-7.1.1? Verizon Pixel) elsewhere, make sure and check Swappa and buy from a well-rated seller.
When I looked out of curiosity a week or two ago, the Pixel XL 128 GB was a tiny bit cheaper than it used to be, although I don't know if it has gone back up in price since it's been revealed that the Pixel is now "discontinued" through some of the carriers that had it, although I don't know the details of that.
I know it sucks if there just isn't a choice to pay straight out for any decent phone, and so you might feel forced into payments, so of course there are other considerations.
My $20.02. Good luck with your choices.

Thank you sir. The down side is that the 32GB isn't even available through Google. I don't want to get it from Verizon because it's locked. I'm just nervous about waiting too long and have the XL be gone. I'm leaning towards getting it soon because even though it's expensive, it is a monthly payment.
Not having an SD slot is a bummer. I know I can't use a 32GB phone. I'll fill it quick. I've made 3 swappa purchases in the past. Two of them were bad deals. The prices on the Pixel range from 600 to 1200. That's a lot of cash up front where the monthly payments seem better to me.
I don't know what to do. If I buy one now, I have this feeling that in one or two months the price will drop and I'm going to kick myself in the ass. That said, I appreciate everything you've mentioned.
I presume you're not on VZW. In which case idk if I could justify the cost, knowing that it's already about 6 months old.
That said, I wouldn't go for anything less than 128gb. Apps are only getting bigger and bigger. Even with unlimited Google photos storage, you're still going to have apps and app data. You may want to have movies and such downloaded to your device.

I am on Verizon. I just didn't want to get it from them since it's locked. The difference in payments between the two is $4/month. If you buy the Pixel from Google now, do you still get unlimited storage?
Sorry for the double post. I bought it. Had to do it after seeing my phone go from 100 to 30% in four hours. Thread can be closed.

To answer your question, yes, the unlimited storage with full un(further)compressed quality is a Pixel perk, and doesn't depend on when you buy the Pixel, and you wouldn't even have to be the original owner/user of the Pixel. For that matter, it probably works for any additional users you would add to the phone via Android.

I did get it from Google. It said 3 to 4 weeks. I dont mind the wait.
Should have waited for pixel 2
Got mine 1/2 price during a vzw sale. There's no way I'd pay more than that because that's all it's worth. It's been the worst "phone" I've ever had in regards to weak signals and dropped calls.
I paid full price for a 128 non-XL. And I've been using Android since the G1, most of my phones had been Nexus phones, every single one of them I modified constantly. This Pixel is the ONLY phone I've been satisfied with. So price to me is irrelevant when it comes to satisfaction. I've wasted SO much more money trying to find the perfect phone for me, than the cost of the Pixel.
