Nandroid swap? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to restore a nandroid backup from another device if it's the same model.
Ie backup my nexus 5 in twrp copy it to my friends nexus 5 storage and restore it twrp?
Cheers

I've done it before with other devices. Worked fine

TWRP now gives the option to include the EFS partition in the nandroid backups....Make sure you do not restore an EFS partition from one device onto the other.

I've tried this on my Xperia and it didn't work

So which is it lol?

what if i just backup and restore the /data partition? that's guaranteed to work or is it better to restore /system with it also?

I've done this switching between mytouch4g, captivates, and gs2s. No problems at all...

OK, great...I hope you don't think I was being patronizing... My intent was more of a friendly FYI and I hope that's how it was received by you
Now that I have a little more time I can say that if it were your own phone you were doing this on, I'd say go ahead and try it. There are many threads here in the various nexus forums where people have said they've done it without any problem with their own devices (after a RMA for example).
If it doesn't work and causes problems you can always restore the factory images if need be.
However, since it's a friend's phone you want to restore the nandroid on to it's a little different.
Are you trying to just get the same apps and app data installed on your friends phone as you have on yours? Or is it something more than that?

Lol sorry didn't mean to sound like that, I sometimes forget that things like tone/facial expression etc are lost when writing. Good advice, appreciate your help!
It's a bit complicated but basically I'm buying the phone off him, so it's for my personal use so I have no problem troubleshooting if anything goes wrong.
I'll give or a shot then, thanks for all the answers

[Q] NANDROID Backup

I'm somewhat of a N00B and I was just wondering if I did a NANDROID backup using TWRP on my current N5 then got a replacement would I be able just to restore the NANDROID backup on the new device without any issues? I would think I'd be able to, but I just want to be sure.
Yes you would be able to
I didn't know you could do that.. I've never tried it before... Thought each back up was also phone specific..

It's specific to a phone type. He's going from one n5 to another. If you had say an s2 and you wanted to put a nandroid from an n5 on it, that without be a problem.
Makes sense.. By phone specific, I just meant exact same device.. Not just same model. Thanks!

The nandroid does have personal information on it so I wouldn't recommend sending one to a friend or stranger
BE CAREFUL!
If you restore your EFS to your new phone (which I just did), you're screwed.
Like, badly screwed.

You're right. But most nandroids only backup system, data and boot. You don't want the efs partition if your going to put it on a different phone.
Edit, leblvin, flash the factory image through fastboot and you should be ok.

if all you do is wipe data, then no. but ive seen this question asked many times, and a few of those times the people asking the question ended up wiping more than just data, and losing their storage contents. so, be careful what you chose to wipe.
What else would you have to wipe to lose SD card contents? Wipe system?

May I ask why you think you would get a sarcastic response?
CWM and TWRP do not wipe sdcard with a data wipe, as the others said. Factory recovery will wipe it, however. It's important to keep that in mind if you ever find yourself using the stock recovery.

You know the typical power nerds "how hard is it to use Google how dare you ask a question in the q and a forum"
It wouldn't be such a big deal if my laptop wasn't ****ed up or I could just back up my data. I think my USB port is trashed, even though I got it brand new in June.
Anyways thanks I just wanted to be sure haha

Use Airdroid or an FTP server to retrieve the data if you can still boot it. I do it all the time because it's less hassle than digging out the cable.

Need to restore an app from backup

Greetings!
I have my unlocked, rooted Nexus 5 that's on 4.4.3. I had to flash the original stock on since the OTA failed and then flash the factory 4.4.3 build. That's all fine!
I backed up a few days prior to this. Now I was dummy and didn't export a file out of this fuel log app. Two years worth of data in it.
I used WugFresh's Nexus Root Tool Kit and the Nandroid back included with it.
If I could recover just that app and hopefully the data that comes with it that'd be awesome! I just don't know how to go after just one app! YouTube has been rather useless cause everybody show you how to totally backup and/or restore!
Hey, if it can't be done I'm not going to cry over it.
Hope you can help! Thanks much in advance!

Can't Update nexus 5 past 4.4.3

I Need help updating my nexus 5 to 4.4.4. I touched the notification notifing me of the update and it switched to the twrp recovery screen and failed. I then switched back to stock recovery. Now it keeps saying my system is up to date. Any suggestions?
it failed because you are not running 100% stock rom/kernel.

fastboot.
There has to be a better way besides me doing a fastboot or restore to factory. There is an app or script I remember having to cleardata/clear cache . I have too much important data that I can't seem to back up.

I wanted to reset the app that controlled updates. I had a similar problem with me rooted galaxy s4 and HTC One and it was as simple as an app reset.

Oh right. So to be clear you don't want to be updated / rooted / recovery ?
Because our assumption was that you did want those things and that's the advice we've been giving
App reset? No idea, they changed how it works.
If you use search, there are other threads discussing that. Probably get this one locked
Edit. Oh so you mean the reset that forces OTA updates to be checked again? That was always considered a bad idea and it still won't help your issue of your ROM is modified.
If you want root, what I said is the best way bar none. If you want stock unrooted, fastboot flash system.img to clean up your ROM.

I think I some how messed up the radio settings I was reading on this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...t/modem-nexus-5-flashable-modems-efs-t2514095
what I'm wondering is if this is the case if there is any way to fix it or did I make a paper weight
You can never make a paperweight of this phone) Might take time but it's fixable. Going to read the link. Don't worry
BTW do a hard factory reset. I lost my SD card, camera etc. Tried all the ADB commands and a full reset solved it. Means loosing everything but I think it will do it

Read it. When my camera went and the ADB commands went I dug a deeper and deeper hole. I changed permissions moved files. I did everything you should not. I was convinced I'd a paperweight. When you flash a rom there is an underlying system that runs the rom. A lot of crucial stuff is stored there. Thats why I say do a full reset. I'd made a real mess. I did the reset not expecting anything. I'd messed it up so much but it made it like new. I was so darn happy! Do it and get back. Gonna help in anyway I can because I know exactly how you are feeling

What custom recovery u got? If you have TWR go into it. Press advanced wipe. It will ask you to type YES. Do it.
Or in phone menu go to Backup & Reset. It's there. Good luck. Sorry for the delays but I'm in uk and my fiancée is in USA. Saturday we video Skype all day but I'll keep an eye on you
