[Q] adjust camera picture size - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to adjust picture size taken by N5 camera? The image size is around 3-4MB now. I don't need such a big picture.

Change it to 5 mpixels rather than 8.

Please help me with the TP2 Camera Settings

Hi,
I am just not able to get satifactory pictures from the phone. I have played with the settings and everything and read about the White balance and all but still no dice.
The part that bothers me the most is that I have it set on Max resolution and the picture size is still 500 kB. What gives?
I dont think ROM makes a difference as I have the same results on Sprint stock as now on Juicy R10.
Anyone care to share their settings in the camera settings if they feel they get good results from their camera.
Thanks
One thing you should make sure of is when you select "3M" for the large picture setting, click "done" and dont go back to look at the other settings on the resolution menu. Doing that may revert is to whatever was last selected on that first page. My white balance is set to auto and widescreen is on. I personally dont think the camera is that good on here but if you are in the right light and setting, your pictures should be fine. What is actually happening with your pictures?

Hi,
Thanks for the advise. The pictures are just too yellow in my case. I have played with the white balance but they dont seem to pop. What is the file size of the pictures you are taking? Mine is 500kB set at 3M resolution. Doesnt make sense.
I think my TP1 took far better pictures than my TP2... odd..

did you try the lightbulb icon white balance setting (indoors)? that usually fixes the yellow for me...the Auto is useless, you need to set white balance for each situation. My outdoor shots are usually too blue so I use the Tungsten setting sometimes.
I have noticed that pretty much every rom I have tried (juicy, energy, S3) all have had very poor camera quality, even when on the highest settings. If I revert to the stock rom, the quality is good again.

now that is interesting. why would that be? I am curious to learn what the differences might be.
I do agree that the tp1 did take much better pics than the tp2 has managed so far, but then again, it took a while for me to tweak tp1 before I was satisfied with the picture quality.
Anyone care to share the size of the file it produces for each picture?

I was pretty disappointed with the camera feature (thought it was an HTC thing) but after flash MR X's latest 3/5/10 and going back to 2/18/10 ROM, the app he puts in makes my camera pretty snappy.
At whatever default setting is there I get 300-700k size files.
Hope that helps someone.
JPG uses compression, so picture size is determined by the amount of detail in the image. The more detail, the larger the size. A picture of a totally blank surface will be the smallest.
The auto whitebalance is horrible on this camera. I get better results manually choosing whatever white balance mode makes white actually look white.
I've also been disappointed with the camera on this phone. Older Blackberry Curves and Pearls take better photos (even though they are at lower resolution). I will say the autofocus is nice and allows the camera to work with close things like taking pictures of written information and barcodes.
I had this fix on my Touch Pro. I applied it to my Touch Pro 2- worked great.

What all does it do?
what does that do? I tried the old panaramic cab file it crashed out the phone and i had do a full rest of the phone as it kept giving me errors in services.exe
I got rid of the program since it did not work with windows 6.5
I am not a photgrapher by any means, but I have been very pleased with the clairty of my TP2 pics. I set it to 3mp - widescreen - quality to superfine - storage to card -thats it. I agree it blues a little sometimes, but this is helped (not completely) with white balance changes. I think this cam is much better than my TP cam, but again I am no pro. Also keep in mind this is a cameraPHONE - you will get way better results out of a devoted device but for point and shoor this thing is more than adequate for me.
PS - over time the little clear plastic window of my back panel hazed up - I popped it out so the camera lens inside is exposed and the clarity of my pics POPPED! - unfortunately now my lens is exposed and I am guessing dust can now get under my cover, but it works well for now.

it fixes this:

Doesn't work on 6.5? Dang....
Turn off widescreen photos if you want to get maximum resolution. You'll get 2048x1536 (3.14 megapixels) instead of the widescreen res of 2048x1216 (2.49 megapixels).

Question(s) about the cm10 camera?

I've been a long time user of the android camera app, touchwiz camera was downright amazing.
I recently flashed a cm10 based ROM and have been playing around with the camera and have some questions.
1. Do you need to tap the screen to focus every time you want to take a picture? My past cameras had the constant block of auto focus so you could just wait for the green and snap. Or does the tap focus only pertain to the spot you want to focus on?
2. Is there a macro mode?..perhaps this is 'flower' mode?
Finally...anyway to turn off the shutter sound other than silent mode? This ones not anything major I just figured I would ask. Thanks guys!

No, you don't need to tap the screen to focus every time. If you move around to different points in camera mode you'll see the screen zooming in and out to focus on the point in the center of the screen. I think the tap is to focus on a point off the center of the screen (taking a photo of someone while their not centered in the screen)
There is a macro mode. When you open the camera there's a settings button right next to the negative zoom slider. After that there's a 3 button settings right where you just clicked, and in there you'll find macro/burst, and all the other extras.
I haven't seen a shutter sound off option yet.
Thanks! I am still unable to find macro..I did find the burst shot which ranges from 5-20 shots. However I don't see macro listed. Maybe I'm just missing it. If you are able could you upload a screenshot of it please? Thanks again!

You're welcome. I can't make a screenshot whenever I try it says that my storage is in use (assuming because camera is open) but if you go into the settings like I described before... the 4th one down gives you "focus mode" that's set to continuous.. click on that to the right and you'll find macro in there.

The AOSP camera is definitely lacking compared to the TW one.
That being said here is an ongoing project to add more features to the AOSP camera in order to make it closer to TW:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746611
I do miss the TW camera, but camera isn't a deal breaker for me to remain on TW... I see more benefits using aosp instead.
Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to bookmark it and check back periodically to see if there's improvements. I see in screenshots its able to store on extsdcard which is nice.
You can easily get rid of camera sounds renaming the sound files from CM -> media -> audio -> ui
just rename the camera files and video files with ending .bak and reboot your phone. After every update you have to do it again.

Selfie photos Reversed..

I took a few selfie photos and the resulting photo is reversed (back to front). Any ideas how to resolve this? I've looked at the settings and cannot find the solution.
Does nobody know how to do this? I suspect you'll want to when you get one of these. I've checked all the camera settings that I can find (noting too that they are different dependant upon what camera mode you are in, and can find nothing .
Might be fixed in the next software update.
Mine are not reversed. I no selfie expert lol, but looks fine.
This is the setting on the 10 for that

Go into camera and make sure you are using the front camera. Then go into the drop-down menu and select settings - camera settings - there is an option for mirrored selfies.

I suspect those offering advice do not have the U11, or a different ROM. The photos below show the settings when in Selfie mode.
I too have an HTC 10 and the setting it has is missing on this handset, at least my one.

With all due respect, I am typing this from my U11 using stock rom.
Try scrolling down on the menu on your first thumbnail for more options

Thanks. There is no scroll bar so it appears as though you are looking at the only menu items, as per the screen capture.
Duhhh.

Lossless Optical Zoom in S6?

Today I was taking pictures with my S6 using the PRO mode and was fiddling with the AF option, when I noticed something interesting. When I drag the Focus slider from Infinity towards Macro, the camera ZOOMs IN while also adjusting the focus. The ZOOMED in image in the view finder looks absolutely lossless.
Here's the thing, it stays like that till the time my finger is on the slider. The moment I lift my finger it goes back to its normal state. The zoomed area in the viewfinder is comparable to the 4X Digital Zoom that our Phone usually does but with much HIGHER QUALITY! There's no way I can click without leaving the slider or take a screenshot, but I will try to record my screen and post the video if possible. I know this sounds rubbish. Any thoughts??
If you want take the picture with zoom, take it without zoom first. Then crop it.
It will way better than pre-zoomed picture.

I understood what you want to mean.
While you took the picture with zoom applied, phone applies extra processing to picture (idk why) and it causes to picture look worse than it should be.
While adjusting the AF on manuel mode, what you see is an non-proccessed pure image. That's why you see it "better".
So, if you want to take the picture w/ zoom applied with better quality, we need less proccess.
That's why I said that you should take picture without zoom, then crop it.

I see the quality of a zoomed image saved in RAW format is similar to that you get in Auto Mode if not worse, since there is no post-processing applied here. But the live preview I mentioned in my earlier post was much better than both. Also, do you get a pinkish tint in your images when shooting in Manual mode under extreme low light scenes? Thanks for your response.

There is always a proccess applied when you press the "shoot" button. Maybe even in RAW mode.
If I set shutter speed to too long, picture has pinkish tint as you said. My sensor is ISOCELL btw.
