I am looking at getting a tablet. My choices are down to Asus Infinity tf701t (The new one) or Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. I am not a fan of TouchWhiz. I am looking at support right now because I will be rooting and more then likely installing a different ROM onto the tablet. That is the reason I am looking at support. Which one will more then likely have the most options for future ROMs. I am also looking at overall quality of the tablet.
I figure that if I go with the Note I can buy a bluetooth keyboard. I can deal without a pen on the Infinity.

Too bad you didn't get a reply to your question in about a month. I currently have exactly the same question. I like the style of the Asus, the materials used, the "on screen buttons", but the Note is quite a bit smaller, a tad faster, more memory, a better screen and better wireless capabilities (801.11ac + BT 4.0).
I suspect the TF701T will have better support from XDA, since its Tegra SOC is better supported. Samsung's Exynos SOC is closed source as far as I know. I remember the Exynos 4 was poorly supported... So I'm torn between two choices: either the Samsung with more memory and a better screen or the Asus that might start out slower, might run out of memory in a few years, but will most likely get better support. I don't like to base a decision on "most likely" assumptions

General consensus is that the TF701T has a better screen than the Samsung Note 2014. Having seen them side by side I agree.
I will be building a rom for the TF701T over the Xmas / New Year period as I have 2 weeks off and nothing to do :good:
Unsurprisingly, Samsung has much bigger market share than ASUS (or any other OEM for that matter), and with Samsung’s marketing prowess, the Note 10.1 2014 edition is more likely to outsell the tf701t by an order of magnitude. As such, there are likely more developers for the Note because it is the more popular device.
As a point of reference, you can compare development support for the Note 10.1 (original version) and the tf700, two previously competing flagships from Samsung and ASUS. A quick look at their respective xda forums will show:
1. Note 10.1: 117 threads in the Android Development section, 18 threads in the Original Android Development section
2. Tf700: 108 threads in the Android Development section
Obviously the numbers can’t tell the quality of the development community, but if you go purely by size, the original Note 10.1 surely has an advantage.
At the moment if you have no interest in the S-Pen there's no point in paying the extreme markup for the Note 2014, especially if you don't like touchwiz. Most AOSP built roms do not support the S-Pen. You might as well hold out for a Nexus 10 for 300 if you're interested in the screen resolution.
Own TF700t and Galaxy 10.1 2014 version
Had the TF 700 for two months before the screen just started to crack and became non - responsive. No abuse, no drops, in a case. Asus would charge 265 + shipping to replace screen. Contacted credit card insurance, collected the money and bought the Galaxy 10.1 2014 edition. BEST DECISION EVER! Still exploring the uses of s pen and awesome functions. I also had the tf 201 and did drop that one, tried to replace touchscreen...but, didn't quite turn out. Go with the Galaxy - much better quality, features, support and access to accessories. Read other blogs/forums on the cracked screen issues that Asus has and complaints with bbb.
Asus is very good about releasing updates, for the first 2 years, asus does not allways put the most current version of android on their tablets at release though. Samgsung does not have as good of build quality. TF701 is metal, Gaxlaxy Note 10.1 2014 is all plastic. I would go with the tf701.
by the way you are not stuck on touchwiz, you can install clockwork mod, or install GEL and switch the font to a better font then samgsung's defualt.

Aside from the fact that it has a lower clock speed on the processor, (possibly a different, cheaper processor, e.g. Tegra 2), and the fact that it has no LED flash, lower resolution front facing camera; if you look carefully at the official press photos, you will notice that it is a bit more "touchwizzed" (look at the icons, they are a lot like the icons on the phone and the OG Galaxy Tab 7, (with colored squares behind each app icon.) It seems that this may in fact be Samsung's answer to the new ASUS 7in, $250 ICS tablet. If this is Samsung's "budget tablet" then it makes sense. If this is true, it will show up on all of the carriers, (subsidized and contracted, of course,) and may hit retailers as a sub-$300 tablet. At that price point, this makes sense.
This is becoming a bit ridiculous. The Tab Plus is not even properly introduced to market and we already have another version out?
This new one will be less expensive, maybe much less.

I stand corrected. I was getting a bit confused. The $250 tablet, (which is still little more than a CES teaser,) is slated to be the ME370T. (I won't comment on build quality yet, since ASUS has serious issues building even their top of the line devices, i.e. Transformer Prime) The tablet I was referring to was the official $250 EeePad MeMo (ME171) which will have a 7-inch WXGA (1,280 x 800) IPS capacitive touchpanel, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8260 processor, a gigabyte of memory, 16GB / 32GB of storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 1.2 megapixel front / 5 megapixel rear camera (with 1080p recording), an A-GPS sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor and a micro-USB port. There's a 4,400mAh Li-polymer battery reportedly good for some 8.5 hours of video playback, and Android 4.0.1. The unit checks in with dimensions of 7.8- x 4.6- x 0.50-inches (and a weight of 14.2 ounces). Seeing as they haven't even announced a release date for the Tegra 3 ME370T, I have a feeling that the Galaxy Tab 2 is going to be competing with the similarly specced ME171. Its not quite a teaser. Reps from my company had it in hand at CES. It's pretty much official and will likely be a game changer, if Asus doesn't botch the roll out.

Unfortunately, it was a prototype unit, (and it felt like it,) While I don't doubt that Asus intends to bring it to market, I do doubt that they'll be able to make it very well at that price point with the types of parts they are claiming. Also, it's ASUS, they'll botch the roll out. They always do. Their devices always launch with build quality issues.
I wasn't there personally but a prototype makes sense. Looks like we're going to have to wait and see. I agree that a budget tab makes the most sense. With the 7+ being the big brother.

Will the average consumer understand the difference between tab plus and tab 2?
Many will think a Tab *2* is newer and better then a Tab *Plus*. like a S 2 is better then a S plus.

I don't know. Depends how they market it. The cynic in me says that the 7+ will become an after thought to both consumers and Samsung. It wouldn't be the first time they've done it.

I am planning on buying a tablet at the end of the month and i am choosing between the Acer Iconia A110 (with its microSD card slot), the Nexus 7 (with its quad-core GPU) and the Motorola Xoom 2 Xyboard/Media Edition 8.2" tab (with its screen size, surround speakers and great camera).
I am not convinced by the build and durability of the Acer/Google tab. And i always thought the ideal (i.e. well-balanced & a good compromised) tablet screen size is an 8" one. That is why i want to ask about the Motorola tab and also in relation to its post-Ice Cream Sandwich update.
1. In terms of the CPU speed is the advertised speed the "base" speed or is it underclocked?
2. Would you know if the GPU is single or dual channel? And does it matter?
3. Is the wifi single or dual band? And again does it matter?
4. Comparing it to the iPad 2 or say an AMOLED screen Galaxy tab would you consider the screen resolution/contrast/colour/dark colours of the Xoom 2 is as good as the others?
5. For a 1-year old tab wil i find any issues or problems in terms of gaming or compatibility with games or apps?

I would strongly reconsider considering xoom2 me as one of options. If you need 3G than, yes, but otherwise xoom2 me is an old device.
The strongest part: screen resolution at 8.2 inches and build quality (at least a feeling of it).
Weaker points are short battery life, lot of restart on 3.2 so You must be sure to have ICS on it, closed boatloader so NO Roms to choose from and total absence of any custom development and device support in any third party tools.
Speed is not breathtalking and theres a lot of hiccups and short freezes and theres not many accessories for it on ebay.
I bought my 608 because of quite cheap promotion but otherwise woulnd choose it mainly because battery and closed bootloader.

The Xoom 2 ME is much nicer now that it's got Android 4.0 on it, but I'm not holding my breath for Android 4.1, let alone 4.2 (out next week allegedly?).
Plus, it still has the issues of weird power and volume button placement.
If my Xoom 2 ME broke today, I'd buy a nexus 7 tomorrow.

This is a Motorola pre-google-purchase device... That means, it will update the normal ways twice a century... I've heard it has been updated twice already... So, ICS is pretty much end of the road for this device and due to its [irony]spetacular[/irony] sales, I'm quite surprised that Moto itself just did not end-up saying device will remain in Android 3.2.2 for better user experience, do not expect anything else for this device, and, since there are no community ROMs for it (perhaps now that a ClockworkMod recovery is in progress we might see something, after all, my guess is that any hacks that work with RAZR to boot alternative roms might work with XOOM 2)...
Really, I would only consider a Xoom 2 if you get it really cheap... That is the reason I bought one, it was on sale from an operator for a fourth of its MSRP... And even then, it took me about half an hour to decide to buy it....

In my country they sell this for 200 euro and ipad mini for 339... . The specs are extremely similar, almost the same. I would choose again any time xoom me.. I can use android like a desktop os and i don't feel like missing anything from my desktop... Ics performance is solid, stable. Is not as smooth as ios put i can live with it. Apps are getting better and better, and i don't feel i miss anything from the huge ios app collection...

The G-Tab 2 is a nice value-level tablet that's not very powerful. It's going to $279 at Costco on Black Friday. The Note is a high-end tablet that's fast and has a ton of unique features centered around productivity and creativity. If you don't need the power and additional features then yes, you should have gotten a G-Tab 2. The Nexus 10 is also fast and powerful and slots somewhere in between price wise. That probably would be a better investment for those not looking for the Note's extra benefits. I had a G-Tab I and got rid of it to get the Note primarily for the additional performance and productivity.

Yes; you've purchased the correct tablet. Although the Tab 2 10.1 falls into a very comfortable price bracket, the hardware of the Note 10.1 more than justifies it's relative expense. While you may not feel as though your specific needs warrant a device as powerful as the Note 10.1, the Note 10.1's raw processing horsepower will leave it sitting pretty with future versions of Android for some time to come. However, the Tab 2 10.1 isn't even as powerful or as well built as it's predecessor. Because of this, I don't see the Tab 2 10.1 receiving many updates after it gets Jelly Bean. As a matter of fact, I would be really surprised if Samsung decided to update the Tab 2 10.1 to Jelly Bean 4.2. Rather, I suspect the Tab 2 10.1 will stay on Jelly Bean 4.1.* and receive only stability patches, security patches, and bugfixes thereafter. If the Tab 2 10.1 does indeed receive a Samsung update to Jelly Bean 4.2, I would expect it to be the last. With Android's hardware requirements becoming ever more stringent, it was foolish for Samsung to release a device as underpowered as the Tab 2 10.1. Furthermore, the release of the Tab 2 10.1 marks the only occasion I can remember in which the device is less powerful and/or less desireable than the device it is supposed to be replacing. The original Tab 10.1 is superior to the Tab 2 10.1 in almost every respect. In my opinion, the only thing Samsung got right with the Tab 2 10.1 is the forward-facing speakers.
So, to sum things up, if you indeed have a Note 10.1, you've made a very solid investment and you have decidedly good taste. I wish you the best. I hope you enjoy your tablet. Take care and have a good one!

I almost agree. yes some things were a downgrade but definitely not the processor or GPU. No it doesn't have flash for the camera. But the OMAP does hold its own, the setup is actually pretty decent and it runs circles around Tegra 2, and can be put against Tegra 3. The main problem is touchwiz; it just bogs down the system, not to unusability, but it is noticeable. Put the Jellybean on it, and it's more smooth. Put AOKP on it and it flies better than the note with ICS. Plays games real smooth also. But other than that, what comes out of the box isnt impressive compared to what was being released at the current time. Not everyone wants to hack their tablet to get a good experience though, it is expected to come with one.
Who has to hack their device to get it running right? I've been sto k since day 1 and my Note 10.1 is fast, fluid, and never shows any lag. For me, this version of touchwiz doesn't slowdown device at all. Never had any issues. Note 10.1 IS FAR superior hardware wise to tab2.
If you want a cheaper tablet that performs great, get a Nexus 7 then. Its still one of the best. If not THE BEST. All around android tablet. A very popular device with xda users and several tech sites. I'd get a Nexus 7 over tab2 anyday if price was a factor.
This tablet is awesome. The pen alone sets it apart from all others and hardware is great too. Screen resolution is the only disappointment in my opinion but I understand the wacom grid for the pen creates limitations in that regard so I can live with lower resolution in return for the awesome pen.
I had a tab 2, they are ok if you're on a budget but if you want to keep costs down a nexus 7 32gb would be a better option. 16gb just isn't enough in my opinion. The omap 440 processor in the tab 2 is getting quite old now and wasn't exactly a top of the line performer on release.

To be honest the price difference between them was approx £65 - one of the reasons I questioned whether it was the right tab was because the screen resolution wasnt any improvement over the tab 2

I meant hacking tab 2, and yes it's that annoying. Try one yourself. The note 10.1 is great, fluid etc but still lags a bit on ICS. Most, if not all, is fixed with 4.1

To be honest, if you have bought a tab and are asking this question then I believe you may have bought the wrong tab... I looked up both, weighed the pro's & cons and decided the note 10.1 was what I needed... If you are questioning that then either you didn't do the research or just got hung up on the extra features.
If you have the option to return with no problems and get a new tab then do so, it may be you will try the new tab and decide that the grass really was greener on the other side....
In Oz we have no such policies. What we buy we are stuck with. The only way to get our $$$ back is to sell on ebay...

Is there any benefits of having a samsung phone and tablet? The reasons why I want a infinity is for the slightly better display and battery performance, but like the S-Pen functions on the note 2. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

In my opinion I believe the note 10.1 out performs the infinity and if all you want is the display get the nexus 10. I've had my note for 2 months and love it

No it's not, that can be a deal breaker for some but i figure between dropbox and other cloud services it wouldn't bother me. But back to between the note and the infinity. Screen res the infinity definitely wins but hardware it's a close race. In quadrant standard (take that for what it's worth) i score consistently in the mid 5000's. When it updates to jelly bean it will be much better. (my galaxy s3 went from 5200 to 6100 with the update) i have yet to slow this thing down.
even though it is a lower res screen it still has more pixels than the ipad 2 and HD movies still look pretty stunning.
If you see some of the post in this forum there is a word that N10 has lots of issue specificly with display as far infinity is concerned it has whole list of issues which have been talked about by its owners in this as well as forum specific to infinity but when it comes to note you will find there are some issues with quality but it restricted to display only and most of the actual users (there are many who are fake owners who only citizise note) will only praise not
I agree that there are very few issues with this tablet, and if you have a note 2 then you will love having both devices so similar, it will make syncing them a breeze.
I previously had the Transformer TF101 (the original copper); this Note blows it out of the water. Sure, the display isn't on par with the Infinity's, but I got the Note because I use it for taking notes and drawing stuff. For me, I rather have the stylus over the keyboard (though I am looking for a keyboard dock of a sort) because I take notes in physics classes. However.. I'd go for the Nexus 10 if you don't need the stylus. Although this tablet has better hardware than almost everything out there (or is it just everything?), the Nexus 10 is a great price for a great tablet with a great display, and that's all you need if you don't want the stylus. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 for my phone, but I haven't noticed better syncing or whatever compared to when I used my Asus Tablet..

- same apps for special Samsung markets
- synchronization works better on same brande devices
- special S pen application will works perfect on both device
- you need just Kies in PC (if you are using this kind of SW)
- compatibility of accesories

My note 4 lags alot (thinking its defective) and i only use it at home as its not my primary phone.
It hasn't been announced, but if it will happen, it'll be at the CES 2015, which starts 2 days from now, from 6-9 january.
There have been no leaks whatsoever, so I rather doubt it. They were working on a 13" device, so perhaps that's the next version. I'd wait until 10 january. If it hasn't been announced by then, it probably won't be any time soon.
Your Note 4 should not lag. Have you tried a factory reset?

Yes, ive tried a reset and eveything else to fix it.
So its best to wait till after CES to buy a note tablet?

Press releases will probably hit today, Monday and Tuesday. But they could wait until Barcelona, that's around the time when they normally announce their new phones, so they might push a tablet announcement out until then.
Id be ok waiting till march, but this is going on my verizon tablet line. And as far as im aware theres usually a gap between the tablets release and when verizon releases their LTE model.
Would be it be unwise to get the pro, and use it till the next one comes out on verizon? (Im estimating a late 2015 release date for the verizon LTE model if they do releas a new tablet)
there is a rumored 10.1 2015 edition that has been spotted in name only so far on some advertising. I had the original Note 10.1 then got the Note 10.1 2014 and was very pleased, the super slow recharge was partial reasoning for me to give it to my gf and then got the Verizon Note 12.2 Pro LTE for the Qualcomm chip that I thought had the quick charge function on the chipset. It does charge pretty fast but for how much I spoent I thought it would have had the Note 4 type Fast Charge. I was able to root the Verizon tablet but future versions after the 4.4.2 exploit will close that loophole. I personally dont understand that they make it so difficult by having a locked bootloader on Verizon. I paid $1000 for the tablet, I want to do whatever I want to it! I love the size vs the 10.1, which feels small now as I have adjust to the bigger screens.
The price point is the issue. In Future, I would just get the WiFi only model as that is usually the version for anything custom (ROMS, recovery, kernel) and are usually widely supported more in my opinion. I'd love to see a Super AMOLED, uses less power, 2k version (whatever the Note 4 specs are) for 12.2 Note Pro. I would love for them to have the fast charge feature just like the NOTE 4, the newer air command of Note 4 vs Note 3/10.1/12.2, Camera improvements passed along, 3 or 4 GB of RAM, larger batteries, thinner bezel. The updated stylus that is more responsive. this is an evolutionary tablet, which I am fine with...

A family member has the 10.5 Tab S, which is a bit newer than the notepro and it even that doesnt have QuickCharge or Usb 3.0
Note pro and Tab S are already 2k/3gb ram, and i dnt see the need for a 4k android tablet.
Im in a contact for a tablet line anyways, so might as well get the LTE model and plus im not a fan of the exynos chips.
Still not sure if if i should get the notepro or wait, i use my note 4 for drawing, multitasking browsing/media/notes/other apps.
I totally agree agree with agree with your observations as well. I was merely speculating what I personally would like to see. I prefer the Qualcomm chips as 805 has the quick charge feature built in. The WiFi Exnoys is getting all the custom support at least in US, as the p905v (has locked bootloader, stupid verizon). If the bootloader was unlocked my opinion would greatly change. I want to see a note version of the tab S, since they finally used a super ambled screen, thus uses less power on lighting up the screen as the black diodes use no power and let's do. Maybe I was meaning 4G of RAM, that is just to keep everything running smoothly. I much prefer the 12.2 screen size over the 10.1 as I have become use to the larger screen size, now the 10.1 seems too small. It all depends on how much you are using it. I suppose I just felt the need to have the next new toy. I do think the USB 3, never got utilized so them going back to USB 2.0 as long as it has the new fast charger adapter, same one as Note 4, thus making things interchangeable. If it must be LTE then so be it.
If you are just getting a hold over tablet for your drawing then I think maybe ok to buy. I was jus a little disappointed especially since I paid 1000 vs say 750 for LTE version of. Verizon.....
My personal wish list is what I was referring to. I'm sorry for hijacking the thread. If money isn't an issue then get note 12.2 pro LTE.....note 10.1 2014 p600 isn't bad either and has custom support, but again. I was on WiFi only versions previous to this p905v, so my knowledge is purely based on my on usage.

I bought a 12.2 lte as soon as it was released here, and I was pretty impressed with the snapdragon performance after several exynos phones and tablets - after lots of tweaking (bye bye touchwiz) extremely satisfied with the performance.
Then came the Note 4 lte. Everything I was expecting - way better than the 12.2 out of the box, and after heavy tweaking (bye bye touchwiz) I'm extremely happy with my Note 4.
So, if you're not happy with a Note 4, you'll hate a 12.2 and should wait for the next generation. When is a 13" Note coming? I want one!

Its not that i dont like the device, just that it freezes and lags a lot And i rather not pay samsung to fix it. The note 4 isnt even my main line, so it doesnt leave the house, i use it as a tablet.
What makes the 12.2 bad?

i have nothing to lose waiting i guess.
But id want the verizon LTE version of any anounced Note Tablet, i got rid of my LTE ipad mini so now i have an empty tablet line that i have to pay for till 2016.

I posted in the note 4 xda section, and theyre pretty much telling me my note 4 is defective.
I have 4 options
1) get the note pro
2) buy the tab S of a family member (mostly for the samoled screen)
3) try to get a Certfied Note 4 off verizon
4) buy another note 4
The note 4 was on my line, but i replaced it with an iphone 6+. Right now its just a tablet (it doesnt even have a sim in it.) Let say i get a working a note 4, im still only going to use it at home as a tablet, which is why im thinking of a note tablet.
So my questions to u are
1) Would u say the LCD screen was a disapoiment? Compare to a samoled (is having a samoled screen Tab S really worth giving up the note features)
2) in what way does ur note pro prefor inferior to your note 4?
For example I dont play any games on my note 4
On my note 4 i use it to draw [sketchbookx + spen], youtube 1080p +, videos of my memory card [720p or less Quality], play about 48gbs of music, and a lot of internet browsing. (I actually do all my browsing on it since i hate my iphones browsers/1gb of ram)
i use the multi window feature alot, running several things at once. I also like how they minimize to a bubble if u need to get it out of ur way but dont want to closw it.

Well, the current one was announced in January, released in march. They normally don't deviate from such dates in a lineup.
I suspect a new version simply isn't viable yet.
IFA remains a possibility, but I doubt it.

I think so too, im going to just go for it then (can always return it/get the 2015 devicd)
Thing is people have been telling me the tab s is the better tablet now. Why i do like samoled screen for videos, i cant think of any other reason the Tab S would be better. Especially since the spen gets so much use from me (drawing)

An AMOLED screen has infinite contrast, since black is generated by turning the LEDs off. It also has a higher colour saturation (so more vibrant). For films that's a little prettier. Due to the black=LED Off system, black systems are more power efficient. However, Samsung lost all IQ and decided to implement White menu's on everything, and combined with Google's white Material design in every app it barely makes a difference anymore. Films, even thrillers, are never true black, so in that respect it also makes no difference in battery life.
Sadly, the Tab S doesn't come in 12.2" nor with an Spen.
In terms of internal hardware the Tab S is identical to the Tab Pro and Note Pro.
If there was a Note Pro 2015 and it came with an AMOLED screen, I'd buy that in a heartbeat. But Samsung has already stated that 12.2" AMOLED is far too expensive to produce, and would result in an additional 250 quid ontop of the already hefty pricetag.

Sounds like theyre just being bias then if the internals are identical, and i imagine the note lcd screen isnt too shabby for videos anyways. They were saying you can use a stylus pen on the tab S but its just not the same. Think ill go for the Note Tablet.
Its more likely the next 10.1 note would carry the AMOLED than the Pro or maybe even a new AMOLED Note 8.0.

You can use a regular stylus with a rubber tip on a Tab S, yes. But an Spen isn't a regular stylus, so it isn't pressure sensitive, has no button, no action menu and no interactions.
If you draw a lot on it, nothing beats an Spen. I tried drawing with a regular stylus but it's just not the same. No pressure sensitivity whatsoever.
I quite enjoy watching films on this thing. On the main homescreen it looks like you can see the screen pattern, but in films, games, etc the thing is perfectly crisp. Very enjoyable

I can't live without the S pen either. I use the note 4 as my main phone. The problem is mine is LTE and AT&T is going to make me wait 60 days till they give me the unlock code for a new device. Since I travel a lot I don't know if I could deal with that again
