Flashable Modems? Why should I download them? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Under the Android Dev forums for the Nexus 5, I saw that there are flashable modems for the Nexus 5. I was wondering why I should download them and what is the point of them? Will they make my data speeds better or what's the deal?

They're mainly for devs or people who seriously mess up their phone. As there is one modem for each region, you will have the one and only modem available to you already flashed, so don't worry about it.

A few reasons:
1. You need some functionality that is not on the stock radio like LTE, not the case for the Nexus 5 but if you have a Nexus 4 you'll know what I mean.
2. You like to tinker, like me or almost anyone else on this website. It's very easy to do whether it's a zip or img file.
3. Something sucks on your current radio like call reception at your favorite watering hole. You change it to see if it works better. If it's better great, if it's worse you flash what you had before.

[Q] Will i Be Able To Use 3G ATT?

I currently own a captivate but now that I have two I am planning on selling and buying a Nexus S.
My question is Im assuming I will not be able to use 3G, however with a custom ROM would I be able to get "H" network or will I only be able to use EDGE?
Thanks in advance

Edge only. T-Mobile and ATT use different network bands. Otherwise I'd own a nexus s as well.

I'm not sure to be honest. If in fact you can get hsdpa or hsupa or hspa with a custom rom or modem. I may purchase one. I can look into it a little.

The answer is no. The physical support is not there - it's not an issue of flashing the appropriate radio.
An AT&T version has been seen in FCC fillings as well as referenced in commits in the git repo - it will be available soon enough. If you get the current version for AWS you're stuck on edge.

Well, you can't. Read the stickies in a forum before posting. Your question was answered there and it would've saved you time in finding your answer. This question gets asked a lot, in spite of the fact it's a stickied FAQ thread.
Also, earch the Nexus S forums for a more thorough answer why, this question has been asked quite a few times. Learning how to use the Search will save you a lot of time in finding your answers and prevent clutter & duplicate questions.
Learning how to read stickies & FAQs will help you (and us) tremendously.

You can't do this for the simple fact that "H" is based off of 3G. The 2 companies use different frequencies for 3G and as such, different hardware is required within the phone. Simply put, no 3g, no H no matter what ROM you flash.
the ATT version is coming soon, probably within the next few weeks. it already went thru FCC testing.

baseband/modem

What's up. I'm coming from a Vibrant and I was wondering why only certain phones use one baseband/ modem and others use many... The vibrant had plenty to choose from... some gave you better data while others sacrificed battery life for good data. The g2x only has one. Just wondering if we already had the best one or what?

LG either doesnt update modems often, or we dont have the leaks like we did in the vibrant forum.
There's an updated baseband as a part of the GB update, but as far as I can tell nobody has uploaded it as a separate file yet.
Just seemed wired it only had one.

Google wallet? Which one?

Ok so I've read so many types for the Verizon one and an update coming out the 17 of October, my question is which one really works, latest one, least pain in the ass, anybody has one that works can you point me in the right direction?
There's a couple out, just don't know which one to pick, and do that have any bad residual? Hopefully this is in the right forum.

i used the scripts method. its easy to setup and takes seconds when changing roms
Is there any difference between the Nexus way and the Sprint S3 build prop way?

T-Mobile WiFi Calling/Texting?

I did some research to see if WiFi calling/texting is available for the nexus 5, but unfortunately its not... Natively at least.
Does anyone know of a way to add the T-Mobile WiFi calling functionality to the N5? I figured there's probably some way to port it over.
Thanks! (I figured this would go in general? Sorry if its the wrong section)

Wasn't done for the Nexus 4, probably won't be for the Nexus 5. WiFi calling has to be deeply integrated into the system.

Well yeah, I figured that, but with custom recoveries, kernels, etc. already, I figured there would probably be some way to get it in there.

Considering there's been a $1400 bounty to get it working on the Nexus 4 for the past year with no success, it's proven to be very difficult. Maybe one day it will happen, but don't give your hopes up.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012468
As mentioned, even with $1,500 incentive, nobody was able to do it previously because it's just not possible without the custom bits from T-Mobile.
Damn... Well maybe one day. :/ I'm surprised T-Mobile hasn't allowed to it be added in an easier way. Such as through an app, or even taking it to a store and having someone there load it up for you.

Just get Republic Wireless if you need wifi calling. It's Sprint though, so buyer beware.

Might trade for G2

So I have the G2 and I have a buddy of mine offering to trade it for a 32GB N5. While I know that its basically the same phone I am more encouraged to simply because I feel that the N5 is more future proof.
Am I wrong for this ? Or should I keep it.

You should change the title to "Might Trade for the Nexus 5".
And to answer your question, yes the Nexus 5 should be more future proof than the G2.

I have changed the title I have offers for both white and black versions I've been reading on some new N5 hardware is there anything I should be looking for when choosing between old and new hardware?

The hardware changes include: larger speaker grills and sturdier buttons. Get the version with the newest hardware. You can tell if it's the newer version if the phone's first three serial numbers are above 311 (312, etc).
There's also another way by looking at the HW Version in the fastboot mode. REV_12 or higher should all have the latest hardware revisions.
Fyi, the G2's base cost (~$669.00 unlocked on ebay) is much greater than the Nexus' base cost ($400 unlocked off the play store). Keep that in mind before trading.
The G2 has a better camera and battery.
I almost got one but found a good deal on a Nexus 5.

I personally would go with the Nexus 5 because of official software updates and the day development community that continues to grow!
If you don't care much about development and timely/official updates from google then I'd say stick with the G2.

I would trade the G2 for nexus 5 and sell the g2 and rebuy nexus 5 and you would probably make a profit
