Wish I could have nexus 5 to try 4.4 gonna save money for it

tried out the cm 11 pre Alpha yesterday and it's a positive surprise!
all daily-needs are running smooth, look & feel & battery seems to be better than JB

I agree, the reduction in resources is more important to me, I only use gimmicks for about 5 minutes anyway

I think the good one at Kitkat is google use Android Runtime (ART) instead of Dalvik cache, that will help our phone runs faster

My favorite feature is the updated Google Now, and the new look too.

using less system resources for sure. cant wait to try it.

Better resources consumption and new flat look and feel

compatibility for lower-end devices! cant wait to try it out!

I think biggest change is using ART instead of Dalvik. It boosts performance

I like my s4

My name is Stijn I'm from Holland and this is my second Android phone. Before i bought my s4 I had a HTC desire. I had the desire for three years after it started to act up when getting hot. Found out this was a hardware defect and decided to buy the s4. I havev the i9505 with the snapdragon soc.
First of I was a bit disappointed about the smoothness of the phone. Animations where not all that smooth and I experienced lag using the phone in general. I was surprised however about the possibilities It presented out of the box. The video player for example has the option to play content on your smart tv . This worked great for me. I like the keyboard, the toggles in the drop down notification panel, and was not as bothered with touch wiz as I expected to be coming from CM on my desire. Also the watchon app that can act as a remote for your tv is cool.
So when opting for a custom rom I chose a stock based rom. Omega v3 was the one I went for.
It simple enough to flash when you follow instructions, but a bit of a hassle as you have to flash a stock firmware first. Lots to download!
Strait after flashing i noticed a big difference. Almost all lag was gone. Then I desided to flash a custom kernel. I went for fauxes as I used his kernel on my n7 and liked it.
After this I had the phone I wanted all along performance wise. No lag and blazing fast. Both the rom and kernel allow you a lot of tweak lots of stuff to make it act the way you want to. Worth mentioning is the app omega files that comes with the rom. It was updated yesterday and it gives you lots of freedom to change anything in the rom, from themes and mods to actual kernels that are compatible with the rom. Great stuff!
I also installed the 3 minit framework mod found in the android dev section. Man this app is great. It let's you change a lot of ui components on the fly with a well designed app that comes with the mod. Things like statusbar color, icons and many more are now under my control. And the dev is expanding the mod as we speak. You can make feature requests in the corresponding thread and they are implemented really quickly. Keep it UP Gharrington!
Also installed an app from the market wich allows for every app to be runned in multi Window mode. Nice.
I also bought the samsung mhl cable . It works great but the fact by our can't turn the screen of the phone of while it's displaying your android on the TV is annoying. Of course there is a root app that gives you this possibility. Yey to root.
Things I would like to test are miracast or allshare wireless screen mirroring and the dock with hdmi and usb ports.
Let me know what your experience is with your custom or stock rom and what you do with your phone.

I can't WAIT! KitKat is destined to be totally amazing. Delicious is the perfect word for it.
I can't think of much to ask for as far as features go, but I do hope we get a perfected User Interface.
KitKat will probably have a few easter eggs, like when you tap on Settings>About Phone>Android Version, you get a KitKat animation or something. But, I do hope for amazing new features that are surprising, since Google is full of ideas and everything.
some skins ?
I'm still happy with gingerbread (rock solid). I make calls, text, surf a little, stream music, gps, etc. Will kitkat change my life?
Everytime I try some new rom, I always go back to GB. I'm sure kitkat will be nice on phones it was made for, but I'm tired of being a guinea pig for stuff that doesn't work 100% anyway.
Could be great a better performance for the batteries.

People please, hold your horses. He's referring to the smoothness of the device as why it's not as smooth as the iPhone is. Well firstly it all comes down to the specs of your handheld device.
If you are on a popular phone or have a phone that has either Jelly Bean Or KitKat then I suggest you switch to that as it had vsync which increases the frame rate display. It makes your device run smoother than usual. If you're on a low end phone a then there isn't much you can do unless you clean up your phone a bit.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
use custom rom like MIUI ROM.,
before any suggestions on how to speed up your phone or make it smoother can be answered, we need to know which phone you have ie: make, model, year, android version etc.
i say this from experience, until very recently my phone no one was supporting my phone for custom roms, no working cwm even, and still no custom kernels so to get a proper answer that will really help we need your phone details bud.
cheers

Or tweak your device. It's all in here.
Hey guys, even until now, instagram isn t smooth on note 10 plus, the animations on iphone are much better and they exist on instagram, not on android...why?

A new ROM. Xperia E :')

My exams are almost up so i plan on doing something never done before ( not working out )
A new ROM ( ICS ) based. Thought of all Sirius stuff at first, but who loves lag? So, this will be stock and Cm fusion. Removed bloatware. Will contain the following things -: non-stock.
Moto G font * zorb *
Moto g/Sirius/custom wallpapers.
Basic launcher.
Moto G ringtones.
Custom bootanim.
Apollo? + Viper? Odexed probably.
No Sony Media apps, ( questions? Regarding Sony+cm fusion ROM having no Sony media apps? They consume high ram and lag eventually ) searching for a fancy camera ( lenovo or moto x or just Google ). ROM should be light i guess. Chip in your ideas and i might as well consider them

I'm with you on this. My exams will be over late in the second week of March.
After, I've planned to develop a custom (stock based) kernel. (Currently brainstorming)
As for the ROM, it doesn't mean that JB means lag. It could be both JB and fast, depending on how the ROM is built.
Relatively ICS is fast, how about oc kernel for my ROM? ( ICS ) ? And a smart ass v2 governor.
Remember : playing with kernels can be tough

Since we don't have cm9, trying to at least theme it to that level and remove all the Sony apps and preload cm9 apps.

Yes, yes it does. Not "too much RAM", but "too heavy".
This is a nice idea, actually, but does anybody know where the 0.68 source is? It's not on Sony's dev website, that's for sure.

'rom' is something more individual like it's own theme or unique features.
Soft-mod has some apps removed, few added, copied tweaks into system and that's all. We have plenty of softmods here.
also: soft-mods are based on someone's else work for example when you just take bunch of modifications from the forum and put them into one package with CM10/stock

But you have to admit that ROM sounds better than soft-mod .
N00bs like me need to start somewhere. I mean, even from copying and pasting I have learned more than simply flashing ROMs(or soft-mods ) other people made. I really want to get further involved in development and maybe, just maybe, I get to learn from source in the future. Would be awesome to compile my own CM(for example).

Exactly.
I'm well aware of that and its why I want to jump in directly into the nitty-gritty of Android.
Its highly probable that I'll fail with the kernel, and thus I'm not promising anything. But I'm still learning, and its a long way to being a full-fledged developer.

Before requesting ROMs consider the phones crappy hardware, if it can handle stuff like Honami Camera and those Apps made for the Z2, remember the E runs on the oldest and ( weakest ) S1 Cortex A5 so don't go expecting apps made for the Snapdragon 801 to work on the older generations

[Q] Recommendation for ROM along these lines?

Hi Everyone,
Just off the bat, this isn't a request for any "best" ROM, what I'm after is recommendations for some ROMs to test that meet the below general outline. Other threads I found through search are often too generic or not along the same criteria I'm after.
I'm a fairly experienced user who, after running many custom ROMs in the past, has been running stock ROM with a custom kernel and Xposed framework (Gravitybox) for a while now. I'd like a similar experience, but would like to see AOSP updates / bugfixes / performance tweak patches from CAF etc. While maintaining stock feel and compatibility (so not CM?). Also would like an easier upgrade path via flashing rather than rolling back to stock for OTA updates etc. Can flash my own bootloaders / radios when the time comes.
Since I use a custom kernel and Xposed for features I don't need any particular features so minimalist would be good. A lot of the ROMs often have their own custom settings managers etc which would be redundant for me. Not afraid to get my hands dirty adding/removing system apps to suit my needs etc.
Any recommendations on where to start? It would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
I would check out some of the roms on here labeled as AOSP, most of them, if not aiming to be next to pure stock are in early stages of development, so should see the latest fixes and updates added to them as time goes on.
Purity/PA might be up your alley.

I've run PA in the past, and found it to be too feature heavy/customized for what I'm after now, with PIE controls, DPI scaling, custom settings panels etc all included. I'll have a look at Purity, thanks.

aosp and caf dont go hand and hand. itll be either aosp or caf. and you never have to "roll back" to stock to get an update, never, there are multiple methods of upgrading without ever having to roll back(even on stock).
Another vote for Purity as it sounds like it would meet your requirements.
Slimkat runs very smoothly and has a "Black Out" feature that works very well and saves you a lot of battery by doing so. Plus its has a smaller DPI so it's gives your phone a new feel while still coming across as stock.

Absolutely. AMOLED screens have LED pixels. This means each pixel is its own source of light and on pure black images, no light is needed so the pixels can be turned off.
LCD pixels do not give light. The they get their light from a light panel behind. This panel either gives out light or other doesn't. So whatever colour the pixel is, light still shines through - which is why we don't get pure black on our LCD.
Offtopic ... LED TV's do not have LED pixels. It's still an LCD display but instead of having a full panel create the light behind the display, it has an array of LEDs.

I would recommend cataclysm, it's a flash and forget ROM. Even tho the main thread has been closed due to people asking where Atlantis is, it's up to date and it is super stable and fast, I always return to cataclysm, because it has a nice amount of features yet it feels like stock.
With that in mind, I hope he returns when 4.4.3 gets out so we can be up to date haha.
