[Q] Phone Backup

Hey Guys, I'm a little bit of a noob here. I have had my captivate for about 6 months now and I started to get a little frustrated with the way the Captivate was set up compared to my old HTC Hero. I didn't have to root the Hero and could do anything with it I wanted. With the captivate it was another story. I rooted the new Captivate and it has been a wild ride. I follow the forums to see what is available after having Super User installed. I have to say I went a little crazy into the exploration of what i can and cant do. I learned what I cant do the hard way and spent almost 3 day's having problems with odin3 one touch flasher. Once i got everything back running to factory settings I decided to just set up the phone the way I like it and updated the config. for example I added the root access and updated the settings.db file to allow 3rd party apk installs. I than also deleted the wealth of useless crap At&T Preloaded onto the OS such as the apps and the 20 AT&T contacts. Fortunately now my phone and layout is exactly to where I want it. Unfortunately now I am afraid to perform other root mods on the phone and have to re flash the original factory settings on it and have to set it up all over again. I am not much of a programmer but do know end user support very well and was hoping that there would be a way to create a backup of the root directory so that in case I brick my phone (happend twice when I tried to replace the launcher program) I can just flash my backup so that I don't have to install apps, configure settings, and adjust the layout all over again? I was thinking of creating an update.zip would do it that i could keep on my sd card and flash it from recovery.

Generally speaking, unless you use the same ROM, it is a bad idea to restore system settings.
Check out Titanium Backup from the Market. It works really well at backing up apps, data, and system data. Be sure to get the donate version so you don't have to manually install every single app (huge time/effort saver). It won't give you an update.zip file, but if you reinstall it and point it at it's backup folder, it can restore all of your data with minimal effort.
If you are prone to bricking your phone, back it up to an external SD card by entering "/<external sd>/Titanium Backup" as the backup path, replacing <external sd> with the real path (it's different on 2.1 and 2.2 ROMs).

Thanks, I actually already have Titanium Backup lite and i backed it up using the batch Backup all user apps + System Data but have no idea how to restore these backups if my phone bricks. I dont necessarily want to flash the phone to try it out. Any chance you know of where i can find out a little bit more information on how to restore backups with this app?

I also have the ClockworkMod Recovery where i have backed up my phone to an SD card. It says during the process Backing up system, data, datadata and than generates an md5sum. After this the phone boots back up and I was wondering if recovering using ClockworkMod is the same as flashing an update.zip rom but instead of using the stock version? Also this app seems a lot easier to use at there is an option to reboot into recovery and select roms

Hello, I recently rooted my Samsung galaxy s captivate and have been reading up on the flashing of custom roms ( planning on getting serendipity 9). Any ways, I was just wondering, when I back up my current rom, after installing the new one, is there any way to restore the content without restoring the whole rom?

When you talk about your APPS....please use titanium backup...it always works.

Yes, Titanium backup is great. Although one downside is that you need to root your phone before you can make a full backup. So you would first have to root the stock ROM, make a titanium backup, then flash a new ROM, then restore the backup.

Mybackup root is good for SMS and call log.

Im already rooted and I have the titanium backup free version. I don't see anywhere that I can make a full backup just individual apps and info ( sorry for being duh an android noob, I'm used to jailbreaking iPhones which is child's play)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe u need the paid version to back up batches. Free is individual apps but I may be wrong

You can batch backup in free version but u need the paid version to batch restore. Free version only allows u to restore one app at a time.

On titanium backup, select backup/restore, after a short delay, top right look for an icon that looks like a sheet of paper, with a tick , select it, the next page look to see where it says backup all user apps n data, think it seems second or third option in the backup section.

Basically all's I want to backup is my 700 snes roms and all their saves....I guess I could get on a comp and put the folder on there, flash it, and drag it back. Thank you all for the help

Those are saved onto the SD card, no need to backup those (unless you really want to). Wiping the phone before a flash does not wipe the SD card.

Download Super Backup (contacts, sms, call logs ) and App Backup & Restore from Play Store free. These two apps work even though you are UNROOTED.

[Q] newbie need help please......

I have a samsung note 3 sprint smn900p
I want to translate the system apks like framework-res.apk and secsettings.apk
then I found one of my friend has a same mobile note 3 sprint already translated and same android version 4.4.2
so I copy all of his files completely ( all system files and system apks ) around 2 GB .
and I make a backup of my system using TWRP recovery .
and now I try to install his framework-res.apk , so I copy it to my sdcard and using rootexplore then change the permissions to R-W-R-R and paste the framework-res.apk file to the system/framework folder and it already replaced the old framework-res.apk with the new framework-res.apk which already translated . but the problem I dont see that the mobile make upgrading for the new apk so I go to the new framework and try to install it from rootexplorer but always get a message app not installed.
I change the mount to RO then RW but nothing change only app not installed.
so how to install the new framework-res.apk ?
my second question, can I make a new rom using my friends complete system files and flash it to my mobile ?

Make a backup of your friends phone from its recovery. Restore from yours, wipe data, factory reset and reboot (this way you will lost all your data)
You can also try an advance restore from his backup, restoring only system apps. It may work
Before anything make your own backup.

Hi, have you try using another mobile backup and restore it from recovery to the other mobile ?
I dont think it will work because each device has different Imei number and different information

Can't say that i have done this exactly...
May a backup of your phone, and restore your friend's system. It may work without losing your data.

what do you mean by loosing data ? if you mean that I will just loose only media files like video or songs or contacts name .
It doesn't matter for me , to loose these files , the most important thing that I want to make sure when I make a restore from my friend backup , I will not brick my mobile and there will not be any problems in my mobile system after restore the backup .
I need someone that has try this method and confirm to us that this method is SAFE.
and tell us what should I choose in the TWRP recovery when I make a backup because there are many options that we can choose like system - modem - efs etc.

Yes you may soft brick your phone. You may stuck in a bootloop. That is why you will have your backup. You open your phone into recovery and restore...
I am a CWM user so i can't tell you exactly what options to use.
When you flash a new rom on your phone you will lose all your data in the phone (contacts and app data) not the files in your SD card.
If you restore your friends backup with the his data (not only the system) your phone should be with his data.
Nobody will "put his hand in the fire" for you. I can't tell you that it will succeed 100%. That is why i tell you to make a backup.
For more info, you should better open a topic in your phone's section
P.S.: Soft brick is not a big deal if you know how to deal with it

so you mean the method will not 100 % success working. that is what you mean. I hope some one that had try this method will give us his experience or I should just make a try and see what will happen.
and I already make a backup for my mobile.
if softbrick happen , if I restore my mobile backup everything will go back normal right ???
by the way my friend mobile still fresh without any data because he just install the custom rom so he will let me to make a full backup from his mobile.

[Q] Restore nandroid backup

Hello Guys,
Since I totally bricked my old Nexus 5 16GB(KTU84P) I am going to get a new one. But I am thinking of getting the 32GB version this time.
Now before it got bricked I made a full nandroid back-up with the help of the Nexus Root Toolkit and TWRP.
Now here are a few (stupid) questions:
~Is it possible to restore a nandroid backup from one phone to another and even in this case a "different" version of the phone?
(I've skipped over this thread real fast http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728266 which says it is possible for phones of the same model)
~If it is possible how should it be done?
~And well if the first question isn't possible, is there a way to read out out the created back-up files which TWRP created and manually restore them(preferable the data partition)
I hope you guys can help me out

Yes, you can do it. Just make sure you're not restoring the efs partition or you'll have another brick on your hands.

Also don't use toolkits next time. Please use the manual methods which are better, safer and teach you the basis you need to recover.

When you run into issues, as many do after nandroid restoring from one device to another... Wiping and Flashing stock with fastboot is the Fix.
Thought I'd cover that up front. ?

Hey guys sorry I didn't answer immediately, but after I saw the posts I immediately ordered a new Nexus 5 (32GB this time). I got it delivered today and like you said I've done the unlocking, custom recovery and rooting manually this time instead of using a toolkit. Which was to be honest way easier than I thought but also way faster than using a toolkit.
But now I've kinda run into a other 'problem'
When I restore my previous made backup (the one from the bricked phone) I first of all only get the options to restore the 'system' partition and the 'data' partition (which is totally fine cause those are the only ones I actually need).
But when I restore the system partition a lot of apps crash on default(It is basically bricked then), and even when I just restore the data partition the same thing happens. (To be completely fair this problem might come from the fact that I used the MD5 verification option when I made the backup but I can't really remember that. but some of my backup files end with the .MD5 extension) Saying this I also used the restore option with check MD5 verification, but needless to say I get the message that they verifications don't match.
So here are a few questions again.
~Like I said before I only really care about the 'data' partition, Is there an option that I still can use TWRP to restore it properly?
~If the above is not possible is there a manual way to read out the made backup file using a program like 'Ext2Explore'(This crashes though when I open the file)
Or did I just completely screw up by checking the MD5 verification?

I believe that with a new device.... It should be a clean start. And I read post after post in different device sections of issues from restoring from other devices.
And so I never recommend it. It can, possibly, bring lots of issues.

Ohh right, sorry I completely read over your post my bad. But then again If I have to wipe the device wouldn't that totally remove the point of restoring the data partition ? or is the wipe command just for the system partition?

What I'm getting at, is don't restore the data partition. You can try, but I often read of lots of issues doing it.
Yes, I implied wipe the device clean. Flash stock. Start fresh.
Now if you had a titanium backup of user apps on your pc... I'd say you'd have a much easier time restoring that to the new phone.
Just my 2 cents of course.

I made a clean start yes. Unfortunately I don't have a titanium backup and I get that storing the data partition to a other device isn't a good idea. But well I never had the intention of making a back up and restoring it to another device but unfortunately my other phone got completely bricked. And yes in hindsight I should have made backups in multiple ways.
But like I said I don't really care about the system(including the apps and app settings) it is literally all about the actual data (pictures and stuff), that is also the reason why I asked if there is a way to manually read/open the back-up files.

The pictures are gone. A nandroid doesn't back those up or anything on the internal sdcard

Well that certainly is a bummer, and also very misleading from the nexus toolkit. From now on I shall back-up my phone more properly and well stop using those darn toolkits,

Did you make an adb backup in the tool kit? That would have your pics. But a flashable nandroid you flash in recovery would not.

Would Nandroid Manager be what you're looking for? EDIT: as above, it won't find and restore any of your pictures/music, as a nandroid backup does not include any of these. There is a chance you find and restore your apps and settings if you so wish. I've used that app before.
Incidentally, I successfully transferred all of my data and ROM from one Nexus 5 to another (had to RMA)
The process I used is:
- Unlock bootloader, install custom recovery on new N5
- Nandroid backup on old N5
- Copy whole /sdcard partition from old to new N5. Basically, all files and folders on the 'root' of the drive when connected to PC. This included all photos, music and the nandroid backup itself.
- Restore nandroid backup on new N5 (only /system, /data and boot.img / kernel), as if you were restoring any nandroid backup really. Though do not restore efs partition as advised above (it wasn't backed up, but worth mentioning again anyway).
Took a while, but the ROM and settings were carried over successfully.

Nope, I did not. And the ignorant person that I am just assumed that the nandroid backup would back up everything since the toolkit says "Make full Backups"
So well I guess I just have to accept the fact that I lost those things

I am assuming that you used a tool like Android File Transfer.
So what I'm trying to do is the same thing, backup my entire old N5 32GB as I had also requested an RMA of the device. Is it accurate in stating that you want me to copy every folder that shows up on the AFT window (Note: I am using a MAC) and copy that onto a folder on my computer. Then copy over everything on the new device (bootloader unlocked, rooted, same TWRP version installed) and restore via the Nandroid backup from my old phone (which was also transferred as indicated above).

I didn't use AFT, just plugged straight into PC, sorry no experience with Mac
Basically both phones were connected, and I copied the whole "/sdcard" straight from one phone to another, without making an initial copy to the PC

Hello all on xda forums. I am new here and need some help restoring my phone. I was rooted on 4.2 Kitkat and decided to upgrade to 5.0 lolipop on my Galaxy S4 Active (GT-I9295). I made the mistake of using helium to backup my apps and now can not restore my apps. When I look in the app folders on my PC there are no files in the folders which makes it impossible to use the server client. I backed up the full app on helium so I would assume that there would be some files there. I've heard some people say that you have to re-install all of your apps and then restore the data. I have really slow internet and would like to avoid this method if possible. Let me know if you need more information. (Cant upload images since I'm new here sorry about that)

Something just happened and I can see my app files........I'm never using helium again. Apparently you need to download an app in order for all the data to show up? (If you cant tell, I have no clue what is going on)

I GOT IT! So apparently you need to download an app that you used to have and back up the fresh download in order for your old app data to show up. I had my old carbon folder stored on my SD card (Make sure you also back it up to your PC) when I downloaded the app onto my phone. So glad it works!
