Ported rom not fully installing - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
So i have an Acer liquid e2, 2 sims cards version, i've been tinkering with it for some time but lately rom porting has caught my attention.
So after searching i learned that ported rom must be similar and there's a pretty similar device, the samsung s4 mini duos, i download its stock rom, extracted its boot file and system folder,
As well downloaded my acer stock rom, deleted apps, firmware, media and fonts, and replaced them with the samsung folders as well replaced an android file in the lib folder and deleted some files in the permission folder and replaced them with samsung one
It started giving me a status 7 error so i updated the updated file and removed till media, i know i was supposedly to delete till the first "; " but the status 7 kept appearing,
Now what happens is that it installs, but not everything like framwork is left out for sure, i think only some apps are being installed
Any idea what is happening?

[ROM]DocHoppyRom NEXTBOOK 7 Premium*updated DocHoppyRom Full On Rootv2.0*2/14/2012

I was working on a ICS based hoppy rom. Unfortunately I just had a catastrophic screen failure, apparently when my laptop bag fell last night, it landed with enough force to shatter the screen on my nextbook! Oh well. it may be a while before I can work on anything to further the version I was working on.
FYI- Due to work, my time is very limited for working on the next version of Hoppy Rom. I apologize in advance. The company I work for is
setting up new engine test cells in China, and my self and 2 other people are main points of support! again Sorry for anything new taking so long!
DOCHOPPY HAS BEEN SIGHTED (Other than on a DAYZ server...Stay tuned.
Ok I have decided to pass along what I have been working on.
Warning***
This is for the Nextbook 7 premium ONLY!

Major thanks to FINLESS BOB!!! GREAT HELPFUL GUY!
PRESENTING DOC HOPPY ROM
CRAMFS STYLE 3.0
AND
FULL ON ROOT v2.0
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for Bricked Tablets. This is known to work on tablet with SN starting with YF1011, and some YF1211.
First you will need to decide which version of the Rom you are going to load. The CRAMFS Style version has SU but you CANNOT write to the /system directory. This is a good all around Rom for those who may need SU but do not need to write to /system.
Full On Root is just that, you have full read write to the /system and can customize the Rom to your hreats content.
HOW TO INSTALL:
TO FLASH CRAMFS STYLE 3.0 Put the UPDATE.IMG file from the Cramfstyle Folder onto your SD card, while tablet is on and follow the on screen instructions.
After running the self extracting Zip file you will have a directory containing the following folders and files.
Drivers (folder)
CramfsStyle(folder)
FullonRoot(folder)
Log(folder)
Language(folder)
Readmefirst.txt
Rkusb.log
RkusbComm.dll
Setting.ini
RK29update.exe
TO FLASH CRAMFS STYLE 3.0 Put the UPDATE.IMG file from the Cramfstyle Folder onto your SD card, while tablet is on and follow the on screen instructions.
To flash Full On ROOT, Plug your nextbook into your PC via usb cable. Turn your nextbook over and with a safety pin or something of similar size, press and hold the reset button for 2 to 3 seconds.
Run the RK29update.exe
Select your Rom files via the boxes containing the .... And navigate to the correct directory for the rom you want to install.
Insert eache file in order according to the update tool.
Clear IDB. (this is like a lowlevel format for the Rom tool:
After the Tool says OK. Select Run. This will begin to load the Rom onto your tablet. It will go through loading and then checking the Rom install.
After the Rom loads and the tool comes back with an OK, patiently wait for the tablet to reboot, and load the new ROM. If the tablet is still connected to the pc via USB when the rom boots it will show the screen allowing you to select weather or not to turn on USB storage. Press the home key and you will be given a choice of Golauncher or Rklauncher. (go lock is a screen lock program.)
Enjoy the Rom!
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for Bricked Tablets. This is known to work on tablet with SN starting with YF1011, and some YF1211.
Features for both Roms:
Complete and correctly working market. It now correctly associates the tablet to your gmail account allowing purchases from market.
Launcher 3.0 as well as Go launcher ex. Launcher 3.0 was pulled from an rk2918 firmware3.0 update and put into this rom.
Google Calendar is now back and working correctly.
Original Email is back and working correctly.
Included Kindle App
Included Estrongs file explorer.
Both have SU though the Cramfs version cannot write to SW.
Removed Apps Added in last release and return to more of a original rom state.
Rom is pretty clean. And seems speedy.
Cramfs Style 3.0 Rom has 200mb internal Ram +/-
Full On Root 2.0 has 894MB of Free Internal Ram.
Cheers!

So freaking sweet, great work on RW!
I used Wendal's tool to decompress the cramfs file system.
As for the /system, Because the device uses cramfs, and based on everything I have read, using Wendal's tool to decompress the file system, make the changes, and compress is the only way I can see to be able to
customize the rom for the device. The image is rooted, but after the update.img is compressed, the /system file remains read only. I tested this using root explorer, but anything requiring su works fine. But all hope may not be lost, I was reading on a chumby forum someone suggested using mkfs.jffs to make it writable, but further down it notes that you would need to change the kernel (easy enough to recompile I think), to utilize a different file system. The boot loader would also need to be modified, something I am not ready to try and tackle just yet, I think I would be bricking my nextbook pretty quickly.
It is a start and I am actually learning a lot as I go.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.
I am definitely a long time user / cyanogenmod / aosp fan, but as far as ripping open .img files its definitely new territory, I tried to find an internal SD card like the nook has, to maybe dump it, but I cannot find such a beast. Any progress you make is awesome. So do things like root explorer work, just not on /system due to cramfs?
Correct, root explorer does work, but due to cramfs, it does not allow you to toggle to rw from ro on the /system.
Working on taking apart apk's and customizing and rebuilding and resigning next.
just flashed this rom and it works great!
How would I go about doing a custom boot animation or image?
... even if it means flashing a new rom from clean?
This is great. Thanks. The only question I have is why do I see so few items in Market? Does it have anyhting to do with compatability?
Calendar & Sync Access
First, thank you for your work.
Before I update by Next7P, have you included Google Calendar and Sync access in this update?
I use MyPhoneExplorer and will need calendar sync to work so I can fully use for business.
Thanks.
There is another method to get Google Market on the Next7P, I am a new user so I can not post the link, but google , forums Whirlpool net au archive 1756859
, very easy and works great, but cannot get sync to work.
Dan,
Thanks for the responses!
sgtfoo : You can use Wendal's rk29xx tool to take a copy of my rom image, or the original update downloadable from nextbookusa.com, and
unpack it. You then have access to the system directory in an editable format. you can go into the system folder /system/media and replace the bootanimation.zip file with another one. Just be sure the image format is 480x 800 and that the zip file has 0% compression ratio. After you make the changes, just repack .img file via Wendal's tool and reflash.
dodoclub : Not sure why. I have a full market. You might try clearing the data and cache for the market. My market shows pretty full, I.E. I got 31050 entries when I searched for facebook in the market.
Danno65: Actually that is something I have been working on. I can get my google calendar to sync, currently I am using a calendar from the market called Jorte, which works great, how ever, googles actual calendar.apk closes unexpectedly, I am thinking it is just a version problem with the calendar, but haven't had a lot of time to follow up on it.
FYI here is the link to Wendal's tool, which makes it much easier to work on the update.img file.
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8hUXYDeoy_hNTc1YTVkYTMtNTNjZS00YjI2LTgyNDYtYjRjZjFmODdiZTQ1&pli=1

If you have any request or questions please feel free to ask, I will help anyway I can.
Thanks Dochoppy
Got one of these tablets for Christmass to replace an old broken tablet I use for work.
Google hosts our work email, so I still need to get Contacts and Appointments going, but I maybe able to side load them.
Noticed build.prop still has ro.secure=1. This prevents adb from having root access??
Calendar & Sync Access
DocHoppy,
I came across a post where the "Calendar.apk" and "CalendarProvider.apk" files must be in the "system/app" directory to work properly, I tried to copy these files to the above directory but found it to be read/only, will wendalls tool have to be used to get access to the directory?
Also, did you get your google calendars on your desktop to sync with Jorte on the Next7P, I tried but no luck.
Thanks
Dan
The updated image file worked great, thanks again
Thank you so much for your work in building a new rom for this thing. I am anxiously awaiting a new filesystem so we can have true root. How do we manage to recompile the kernel for ext4 support and change the /system fs?
Hello, first of all, thanks for your work!
I am having trouble loading this rom. it says there's an invalid image file in my sd card and if I want to delete.
Now, I don't know if my tablet is a never or older version of what you guys have...

I would say the serial number would have something to do with it, check on the site for nextbook and see if your serial is in the same *batch* as ours, if the original serial is in a different group, im assuming the hardware may be slightly different? If so, you can always use his method to repack the original with root.
First off I would like to say that I was very pleased when I came across this thread from another one. I haven't flashed this ROM yet, but plan to. Thank you for your work on this as I have been searching the whole internet since I got this thing [4 weeks now] for some sort of custom ROM. It is hard to use this tablet when I have ICS on my Captivate and Vibrant. GB just isn't as cool.
One thing I hope we can work on is root access, so we then can use Titanium Backup. Then we won't have to manually reload everything when new releases come out.
With all that being said, if there is anything I can do to help, I would love to. Like I said, I plan on flashing this probably tomorrow or Tuesday. Thanks again.
For the record, I got titanium backup working fine on this rooted rom. it is capable. You just need to reboot after it restores a backup.
i'm new to android. glad to see rooted rom finally, keep it up!!!
i have a clarification, any improvement in the booting time? my device took 1min30sec (power ON to ready to use, for me, 90sec seem like not fast enough).
Good luck on improving boot time. And besides a tablet is best used when on all the time... try using the suspend state to quickly wake it. We're just starting with the early versions of this rom... give it time to grow.

Build.prop editing
Okay so observation:
Our tablet is not recognized as a "tablet" by the Android market, only and android device.
What prop would I have to edit in order to have us recognized as I tablet. I noticed this when:
I finally managed (through some internet tutorial before this rom) get the market working (the first version, not 3.1+). And when I downloaded apps (I'll use Minecraft Pro as an example) I noticed that the way mine looked and the way the tablet version looked via android market photos and Youtube, ours looks like an enlarged phone version rather than a tablet optimized version. What can I edit to fix this?
Flashed this today... so for it works great. Love the new boot animation. Great work and can not wait for future releases!

One thing that would be great on a future release [not sure if it is possible yet with out r/w], would be a bigger data partition for apps. Moving everything large to the SD is ok, just takes longer to boot those apps. A kernel that would allow voltage control app [like CPU Master] to work also. Just a thought!

[ROM] Androot-N7p-rom for Nextbook 7 Premium

Welcome to Androot-N7p-ROM for the NextBook 7 Premium *ONLY.
I decided to change up some of the apps and generalize the rom in terms of its boot-animation screen. It runs on LauncherPro (just choose it as the "always"/default upon first instance of it. The Launcher that comes with the device isn't so great, but I left it there just in case.
It's based on the first known rooted ROM for this device: 'DocHoppy's ROM'. Credit for most of this ROM goes to him and to 'Wendal' for his toolset for packing the ROM (into cramfs) for the Nextbook 7 Premium device.
As such, it is a beta/ work-in-progress.

-Officesuite full <- may as well keep it
-Titanium Backup 4.6.7 <- has some very handy tools aside from backups
-LauncherPro 0.8.6 <- may be old, but it's smooth and capable
-superuser <- because this rom is rooted
-has some of the Google Apps (go ahead and add as you see fit)
-has a custom boot animation.

Apps2sd reports SU Binary out of date. Attemps to update this via superuser fails due to cramfs file system.
It's not perfect, but it does work well and I run it as my daily driver on my N7P.

Since I'm new to modifying/cooking ROMs, here's my
Questions I have for the devs that cook ROMs all the time...
(lol)
Where do I edit the items that show in 'settings > about' in the device?
How do I change the default shortcuts that LauncherPro puts on the dock?
How do I change what icons are default on the home screen?
Where do I put custom wallpapers as part of the rom?
How do I modify Android UI colours?
Can the dialer be removes without losing "contacts"?
How do I create a shortcut to "contacts" without the phone/dialer?
(more to come I'm sure)

In Dochoppy's original rom/post he mentions that the device will need to have a serial number starting with YF1011. That stands the same for this rom, as it's derived from his.
Having an invalid update.img firmware file could be due to a number of things, but the one I have here works on my device.
I wish I had more of an answer, but by all means try out the tools for repacking the rom.
So after messing around compiling a ROM, I forgot to add a launcher, and now I am stuck in a bootloop. After the girl in the dress is there for awhile, I get a black screen, then reboot. Anyone now how to fix this? I have been searching Google, but can not find anything yet.
Any help would be great!

I had mine half dead for a short bit until i found i could go into a low level bootloader mode and recover it. I am working on getting a the tool/images i used to recover mine uploaded and such.
Download and extract n7p_rescue_kit.zip
Reboot device using paper clip then quickly press and hold reset until you get black screen with usb plugged in
When windows wants driver give it the respective folder for your os (32bit or 64bit) from Drivers folder from the download
Run RK29update.exe if it says "Found RKAndroid Loader Rock Usb" on bottom you are good but if it shows "No Found RKAndroid rock usb" repeat last step.
Either flash all of the default selected items or do just system (since bootloop is in system)
Hope this helps
P.S. If you pack then unpack your custom one you can flash JUST system using the tool but be sure to use the offsets that are pre-loaded.
use a pin to push the reset button on the back to break out of the boot loop.
If after this your rom still bootloops, try putting a different update.img rom to flash, on to the sd card. Then boot into safe mode by holding all 4 front buttons after boot. the update should be found and installed after that.
Thanks!
I registered just to thank DocHoppy for all his efforts. I have a Nextbook Premium 7 I got for Christmas from Hastings, which fell into the YF09111XXXX batch. I used Wendal Chen's RK29xxImageTools_v2.1 to unpack the firmware upgrade from the nextbookusa site. I then put the Google apks, SuperUser, Rootexplorer, and re-packed it with a custom bootanimation. Because of my serial # I couldn't use DocHoppy rom without getting that "Invalid Update" error, but using their firmware seems to work.
My next goal is to find a way to get the "Accounts & Sync" into the settings! One of my apps is getting an "Error 42" which is an Android Market authentication error... however, other apps have worked without any problems so it's difficult to tell if that's the issue I'm having.

Not sure if this rom will work for you, just guessing by your serial number. If it is to work changing between roms on these tablets is very easy. Just download the image onto the root of your sdcard, rename it update.zip (not update.zip.zip) your tablet will recognize it as an update and ask if you want to proceed. If you say yes then follow the prompts and your in business!

Just go this to day and was plesantly suprised to find this rooted rom. Just wanted toy let you know that my S/N is YF12112xxxx and this rom work prefect for me (so far) Thanks for all the work you guys have done here. Also is there anyway to over clock the processor in out tabs?
Thanks for the comments thus far!
I would like to overclock this thing too, but that might be further down the road, as priority is on getting a different file-system for the /system volume.
Version 0.4 is coming next.
FYI:
There will be a larger span of time between updates on this particular rom for the N7p, because I will be using more stable conjumbles of things from other roms for this device. This rom is more of a remix or derivative than an entirely different rom.
Again thanks for all the hard work. Also i love google currents app but we cant use is on our device because we don't have map's installed. can that be added as well?

Most of the N7P roms out there now have Market installed and working. Why not just install these apps yourself?
I only suggest so because for the time being, the device is limited to its minimal capacity for apps without full-on apps2SD. Besides, for a tablet like this, you want to keep the system apps to a minimum and de-bloated for performance whenever possible.

Oh I was talking about currents and maps. Both of those can be installed via market. I have them both on my tablet.

Motorola Stock Apps

Hi,
does anyone know where i can get a Full Package of the Original Honeycomb Motorola Stock Apps? Just have a Xoom from a friend here, Flashed ICS from Team Eos, and now he anxious want's the Original Motorola Apps again.
Especially he Stock Filemanager.
Can i download them from anywhere? Or have i to flash back to HC, and backup the apps? If yes, does it work with Titaniumbackup?
So that i can get the clean install-apk's, not the orginial which are integrated into the system?
thanks in advance
Cant help you sorry. But would also like the default File Manager back for posterity. Apparently it is only the non US model that actually cam with the file manager in Honeycomb 3.2 update. US versions never had it and everyone will tell you to download a file manager from the market!! But the stock one was very simple and intuitive so I like it and want it back too.
Hey guys!
I managed to get the file manager that came in the Honeycomb stock motorola, ROM, but I can not install!
I've tried putting the file directly in the "app", I changed the permissions for all possible combinations, and nothing... I've been researching and I think the problem is that such "android manifest" it determines the sdk to target 11 and the ICS is 15 .. but can not edit the xml. I'll leave the apk here, if someone can help: http ://dl. dropbox. com/u/28574144/FileManager. apk
I liked it too, because it was simple. But I then realised it was not tablet optimised, so much slower to navigate.
miss stock apps too

Not sure if anyone would be still interested in this but I got the stock File Manager back!
I've "reseted" my xoom back to 3.0.1 version. The File Manager apk provided wouldn't work but after an update to 3.1 version that nice stock File Manager apk just showed up automatically. No need for apk installation or anything.
Anyway thanks buddy for providing this link!

ZTE V975

Hi all.
I have a new ZTE V975 and i have it root and with gapps but i have a problem with Play Store compatibility. "Financial" apps aren´t compatible with the phone. I think that it is a location problem in build.prop
The problem is that i dont know modify it.... can someone see this build.prop archive to see if can change it to improve compatibility?
If someone want to see it i can upload it.
Thx.

Hi gargamelxda,
I've got the same phone and noticed the same thing with certain apps on the play store. Basically what I found was the device was missing a bunch of Google support files that were in GAPPS zip. Now I wasn't able to flash the GAPPS.zip file through the built in recovery as it wasn't signed correctly for this phone and there is no custom recovery available yet.
What I ended up doing is extracting the GAPPS zip file to my SD card then used the root explorer function in ES File Explorer to mount /system as RW and move the majority of the extracted /system files to the same location in the device root /system folder. Couple of things to remember though:
1) Don't overwrite anything that's already there (there was only 2 or 3 files already there by memory)
2) If the folder already exists don't copy the whole folder but rather all the files under that folder as you may either stuff up the folder permissions or create a new folder as the android file are case sensative (eg the folder "Apps" is different to "apps")
3) There are some apk files you won't want to copy like the "onetimeinitializer.apk" file as it will run the google first time initialization next time you reboot which may stuff up your settings (although if you're planning on doing a factory reset after doing this it should be OK and all the changes you've made will stick as they're in the /system folder). I also found that if I copied "LatinIMEDictionaryPack.apk" and "GoogleTTS.apk" they would constantly crash after the reboot.
4)Make sure you set the permissions after you're done copying to "-rw-r-r--" for the files and "drwxr-xr-x" for any new folders you create. you can do this individually with ES File Explorer but if you're ok with linuix command line you can do it in batches (eg all files with the apk extension) via the Android Terminal Emulator app or ADB Shell over a USB connection to a PC. I don't remember the exact command lines I used but if you do some searching on this forum you'll find them easy enough.
After a reboot the apps should now be available to install (at least they were for me) via the Play Store.
Usual disclaimer - If you stuff this up you may brick your device and I'm in no way responsible for it.
Hope that helps
Cheers
Browney
I spent a few days trying to install Google Play the cyanogenmod way, following instruction on a spanish site similar to what other's have posted here. The idea is to mount the readonly systemfolder using the bootloader and insert/write systemapps into system/apps
I succeeded but for some reason launching google play was killed instantly by some resident app on the phone.
On the MIUI forum somebody called Eric Xiang built a google play apk that kills the resident blocker and installs googleplay !
xttp://en.miui.com/thread-3998-1-1.html
I now have a fully operational V975 (4.2.2) with the latest official build B06 and google play.
Out of the box the phone is unlocked but not rooted.
To root it, install xttps://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15286951/update.zip using the bootloader (vol+ and power on, when v975 wakes up release power but keep vol+ pressed for a few seconds more, then browse to update.zip. Obviously you preloaded the zip on a sdcard.
If ZTE release firmware B08, you'll have to root it again.
Battery life is excellent, as well as speed, camera, GPS fix is instant. I had a iocean X7 that i killed trying to get the gps working, but v975 feels a lot faster vs the X7's MTK 6589 quadcore 1.5ghz. Granted there's less pixels to move around.
One caveat : iCoyote does not install because of binary incompatibility ? This is an x86 device.
I also discovered the existence of AmazonMarket. Not as complete as GAPPS, but a nice fallback market. And most of the google stuff is installable by apk anyway, so living without GAPPS was not as bad as it looked.
Thx to Eric Xiang, his app prolly opens up all androidphones to googleplay, chinese phones can flood the rest of the world now
the above was two days of research guys, enjoy it !

Hey
I'm going to get this phone in the next few days. As far as I know, for 99%, I'm not going to have Google Play on it.
What is the easiest way to install Google Play on it?
I already downloaded B06 since I want to have the latest build.
New ROM´s
Hi, i aplied root, instaled recovery and now search custom ROM´s, Where are thete?
help
Hi... how to root zte v975?
Please help..

Root on fire HD 10 - but no custom recovery or ROMs?

Can someone help me understand how we can have root methods for the HD 10, but no custom recovery or ROMs?
Any news or updates on the effort here? I'm willing to pay or donate to get it done!
I REALLY want to turn my tablet into an Android tablet... Not a fire tablet with an almost Android experience.
If we can get some one to create safestrap probably we can have a custom Rom !ade
There's no ROM(s) because root was just gained in December. So far as I know, no developers own a HD 10 (at least none that have said so) so no one is able to build one. I am willing to try, but unfortunately I don't have all the resources yet. There is no custom recovery because the bootloader is still locked (so far as I know). Its very hard, almost impossible to get a custom recovery on a locked device. Give it some more time. Maybe @ggow will surprise us.

I have a 'maybe dumb' problem, because we only can flash with FlashFire.
Months ago, I owned a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. I tried to compile Oreo for it. But, what happened to me is, before I get the ROM to BOOT, I compiled it exactly 17 times, fixing bugs. I never had a problem because I had the TWRP handy, but in this case we will not have a custom recovery at all. If the ROM fails to boot, we'll have to sideload stock ROM. Sideloading stock 17 times... doesn't it look tedious? From my experience, any developer no matter how clever he is, will have to compile at least 10 or so times before getting the ROM to boot???
Thanks!

To be honest, FireOS is pretty awesome with root and debloated. I've not had a single problem debloating, and I'm still going lol.

Hi! I pretty much agree with you. But you never know what it can do until you flash stock Android.
Thanks!

Could be that I don't know how to solve the problems I have, but for me not all the Google play applications I want (for my kid) work. Issues vary from validating my authorized purchase to core functionality of applications not working. Some of the applications refer to Android os content and services that either aren't in fire os, are named differently, or have different functionality.
Not to mention that I dislike my son's user experience... He's only 3, quite smart but I've not been able to strike a good balance of protecting him and allowing him to actually use his tablet without learning wierd tricks to access Google play apps.
I'm ok if I have to stay on Fire Os if I can have complete control over profiles, launchers and have a genuine experience using my Google Play applications. Some of the FreeTime stuff is ok... My son might like some of it. But more importantly I want him to have the far superior applications on Google Play which are not currently available on Fire.
I'm willing to contribute to get a custom rom on the fire 10.
I really want to compile one, my skills are getting blunt without some compiling, but it turns out that I only have a HD 8.
Can someone please educate me on getting the GPS to work with google maps, like my phone? My HD 10 7th gen is rooted w/supersu. I have xposed and flashfire installed.
Is a custom ROM really required for this? I tried GPS tethering over hotpot but even that didn't work properly. I wish Amazon had their own proper NAV app to use the GPS chip, could be a bonus to being a prime member.

Clear data of 4 Google apps. Uninstall and reboot. Make sure nothing of the apps are left in /data/data. If so, delete folders and reboot. When booted again, toggle off location services for about 30 seconds and turn it back on. Then install the 4 APKs in this exact order: gfs_login, gfs, gms, vending. After install wait about a minute or two and reboot then log in. Wait several minutes, watching the two desktop icons. When they flash, the apps have updated. Go to location services and it might be turned off. If so, turn it on and press accept/yes for ALL OPTIONS. If it's turned on, toggle it off for 30 seconds then turn it on and again accept/yes all boxes that appear.

Thanks, although I did not get location prompts at the end. :/
Data was wiped for all 4, and uninstalled. rebooted and verified no data with ES.
Installed google apks in the exact order, waited 2 minutes, rebooted, then logged into playstore.
Went to home screen, saw apps flash after waiting. Went to location services (was off) turned on and no prompts
Turned off, waited 30 secs, turned back on, still no prompts.
Is this any different from your guide here?
Step 6. states "Once all the APKs are installed, open the Play Store and sign into your account and IMMEDIATELY go to settings and TURN OFF auto-updates. "
Perhaps that's what I need to do?
Just ordered an HD10, will this tutorial still work? https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd...7-root-box-t3726443/post75187398#post75187398
Will that debloat Fire OS also?
So I've figured out numerous things that get this closer to a custom rom. I just want to report my progress. As I'm working to get my PC in a good enough shape to run Windows and Linux again, I can't compile from source yet. my biggest issue is space. I need to free a lot up. But that doesn't mean anything.
I have been able to track down a lot of useful old school tools here on XDA. The amount of resources that exist on this site never cease to amaze me. Given what I've been doing to these tablets (the resources are old, 2012 onward), I kept looking in that era for tools to assist in getting us to a rom. In the past week I've been able to do these things, with success but have not tested a rom yet. Amazon has had it a bit more difficult with this device.
- Successfully deodexed the stock ROM 5.6.1.0. This was very easy to do...once I found tool that was compatible with deodexing Lollipop. Apparently it not easy to do.
- Successful library integration and editing of a stock AOSP Gallery3d apk. Fully 100% operational and full picture editing availability. Combine my wallpaper discovery, Amazon Photos is no longer required as a wallpaper or gallery source.
- Successfully addition of other surprises
- Figured out how Amazon restocks the ROM on a reflash. In the update.bin is a .dat file. When compiled, produces the system files in whole fresh stock. This can be edited then recompiled back into a system.img or can be used to build a ROM .zip style. That also means once I can build from source, a real ROM can be built.
- Will be pre-rooted with busy box.
- Viper4Android
- Ad blocking from open source free ware.
- Includes my framework and Settings mods.
Any questions please feel free to ask.

Or a severe lack of progress...
I have been at it for hours and hours and I am no closer than I was when I made my last post. I've looked at dozens of updater-scripts and the mount points are no different than the Fire 7, but it just won't flash a zip and when the rare chance comes along that the zip does flash, booting doesn't get past the white Amazon logo (first power on logo). I finally managed to get nearly all of the script right, and now when I add assert getprop for device ID verification, it rejects it despite the fields being properly filled out. I'm not giving up, I just need to figure out why.
On a side note, I have been able to do a switcheroo on the system, sorta. In trying to further mod the settings apk, I have been able to use a settings apk from an AOSP rom to replace FireTabletSettings. There is a trick...uninstall the stock FireTabletSettings APK, wipe the caches and dalvik, and took a resigned AOSP settings apk (test key signed), installed it as a user app then converted it to a system app. It installs fine, but I can only get half of it to work. I haven't tried with the framework or systemUI yet because I haven't been successful with the settings.

Try digging in files. I guarantee that Amazon took a very similar approach as Samsung did, requiring you to flash a break encryption zip.
I would try to help, as I've made several AOSP roms, but that was when Android 4.4 was the newest and you could compile it with 4 gb of ram.
Once I upgrade or get a new PC, I will most definitely install Linux, and try to help this forum.

Haven't been up-to-date.
Do we have TWRP? If not how are you flashing the files?
I'd be open to porting TWRP to the HD 10 and maybe the 8 if we needed.
Reason being TWRP backups can be converted to a flashable .zip file, meaning that once you've gotten all the AOSP apps working (settings, gallery, etc) you could theme it, debloat it, deodex it, and everything else then save it and convert it to a zip. Would save people the time of doing it, and would be one step forward.

Not sure about the encryption. It has to be a script problem, or the system partition won't accept zips and that's the barrier. However if I just flash the system directory instead, everything works fine. I can flash stuff into it just fine that way, but seems any time I go the way of the partition, I can't win. Flashing your own system image works too. However I haven't been able to get one to flash if I modify it. So I can decompile a system.img add to it, remove items and recompile it and it won't flash.
I am using flash fire to flash zips. We still have a locked bootloader so twrp isn't a likely option.

I mean, if PC performance is an issue I can give you access to a brand new xeon if it means there will be a custom ROM out.
Been thinking about buying the Fire HD 10 this black Friday and flash the Amazon garbage out, and was amazed to see none exist even though it has been a year since they figured out the rooting.
This will be an outstanding value if it was possible...
