Sharing problem - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When in the youtube app I cannot share video from the YouTube app to any other services other then g+ ,the sharing menu doesn't open, it goes direct to g+ , If I disable the google plus app the share menu on the youtube app okay but once I enable the google plus app the problem is back? Ideas?

Same problem for me, In fact, if you try to share a link from other apps, this happens as well.
This happens because the ACTION_SENT intent does not seem to be saving preferences properly. I am trying to fix this. Really annoying.
A workaround for now is to use the Andmade Share app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andmadesoft.share&hl=en_GB)
EDIT: Seems like an Android bug (c.f. https://code.google.com/p/android/i...nd&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...createchooser-method-causes-intentserviceleak)

Having the same issue, but youtube opens google drive. If I disable google drive I can select any app to share to. So is this a bug with 4.4 or youtube?

It's a bug with many if not all apps. I hope they fix soon
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Go to Settings-->Apps-->3 dot menu and hit "reset app preferences". This will clear all sharing defaults.
Apparently, either there's a bug in Kitkat or an app that auto defaults sharing to the app you last shared to. So if you shared something to G+ before the bug kicked in, all subsequent shares go to G+ without "share" menu popping up.

This worked Thank you! I emailed Android Police about the bug and received the following response:
"You know, someone tipped us that this was happening to the youtube app, but I couldn't reproduce. They ended up factory resetting.
I then she something similar in Feedly - it opened Gmail instead of the picker, but upon retrying it worked.
Definitely seems like an issue somewhere."
Hopefully next time it happens I will know how to reproduce it.

Have the same issue. The first time everything was defaulting to Google Drive. Now it's just started again but it's defaulting to Google plus instead. The fix mentioned above worked but it's still a bit annoying.

[All roms][Sharing] Huge battery saver!

Google think that almost every device running android, is their device. Therefore they implemented a service within Google Play Services that will connect your device often to the Google and it will drain more battery then needed.
NOTE:
I tried a method that was shown on i think this forum or another one. I can't remember which one it was, and i cant find the thread either.
So before i am going to start this, i wanna thank the guy from the original thread for this, even if i dont know where i can find you. I am only sharing this so i take NO CREDITS.
I repeat, i am ONLY sharing this.
+ Works with:
- AOSP roms
- TW roms
- Well, basicly all android running devices :fingers-crossed:
To start with:
- Turn of location settings
- Go to settings, accounts and go to your google account.
+ go to advertisements and untick the toggle that says that Google takes care of your advertisements.
Most important:
- Download Adaway (latest) from HERE.
Thank you @mrRobinson for this awesome app!
- Open adAway and provide Adaway root access.
- Press the menu button and go to your own custom list.
- Now add a line by pressing the + button in the upper right of the screen.
- Add the following line < mtalk.google.com >
- Make sure the the checkmark is ON with the "mtalk.google.com" line.
- Now go back to the homescreen of adAway, apply the patch.
Note: According to the maker of the original thread, this seems to be the server that your device is always trying to communicate with. So by blacklisting this URL, there is no connection anymore.
Note 2: Cyanogenmod (and maybe other AOSP or GE users) are experiencing that the Blue highlighted WI-FI icon and the blue highlighted antenna icon are now GREY after applying this.
This is because you are not connected anymore to the google servers.
Note 3: Keep in mind that you can still manual synchronise your calander, contacts, Gmail, and other Google account related.

This (syncing) only applies for manual updates. Leaving the entry in Adaway will disable auto-updates. Not a viable option for me, am not going to manually refresh Google apps...

Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for this.
I don't think Ad away works as it should though.
It says its syncing and merging with my current hosts file but after doing that my hosts file goes from 1.4mb to 700kb. So all its doing is deleting stuff. Weird

I always delete GooglePlayServices and never have any problems with apps updating.
I still get notifications in my status bar telling me when there is an app update available in the Play Store and also still get my Gmail notifications in my status bar.
Syncing works perfectly and so does Maps, Google Search, YouTube etc.
I actually can't see ANY reason to have GooglePlayServices installed.
All my Google apps still function perfectly without it.
And I no longer have RAM wasted and battery used up by this annoying app!!
My advice to everyone, delete it, it's not needed at all.

Was pretty euphoric when I read this so immediately disabled Play Services and rebooted like a happy little kid
That level of joy didn't last long:
Maps, Calendar, Keep, Youtube, these all need G.P.S. to function properly. Maybe even more apps but this is where I stopped.
Needless to say turned it back on again. This, as well, is not a viable option for me

That's odd, I don't get Google Maps requesting Play services on my device.
I do get one of those notifications after wiping cache and dalvik cache though, I just swipe it away and carry on as normal.
After you swiped them away can you still use the apps requesting it?
For example when I first boot up YouTube after wiping cache it says it needs PlayServices to run but I just ignore and cancel it.
I have never lost any YouTube functionality at all.

Some yes, some no. Keep refused to work. Anyway, can easily make it through the end of the day anyway and will always charge at night so no biggie but all small bits can help of course. This fix is a bit too coarse, for me that is of course

Google Plays 'Add to Wishlist'

Am I going effing crazy or what? I can't add hardly anything to my wish list anymore. For over a week now.. It is getting quite irritating as I love that feature. I am always adding stuff to my wish list. Its an awesome bookmarking utility whether it was intended as one or not.
I can maybe add one or two things to the list a day, and when I do they are pretty much only paid apps.
That is exactly how Apples appstore works. You can only add paid applications to your wish list.
If they are planning to change that to only paid apps I'm not gonna be happy. That would be very counterproductive.
Sure you could just install it real quick if its paid, but I don't need apps I don't need right this minute wasting space and other resources. And also I will find a good app for my tablet while browsing on my mobile. So I will add to wish list then download on my tablet.
Every time I try to add something it simply says 'could not add "some app" to wish list'. Am I the only one having this problem because I don't see anyone else complaining about it anywhere. Nor even a section to contact Google plays support team about it.

I apologize. Your reply went unnoticed till now. But I just tried it. First I tried adding to wish list an application on the Google Play Store app on my Nexus 5, it gave the usual 'could not add appName to wishlist'. I then opened the link by sharing to my browser and sure enough it said 'An error occurred, please try again later.'
So unfortunately looks like its happening on both. So am I alone here? Are others able to add free applications to their wish list still? Are you able to Lesalloum? If so must be an issue on my account. But this is the only issue I am having.

Me Too!
I am also having this issue. It is not a software issue, it is an account issue. I have two google accounts on my phone, and online. When I switch to the second account, on both the website and the Play Store in the phone, I can add to its wishlist just fine. But I am unable to add things to the wishlist with my primary account.
When I tap the bookmark icon on my phone, the little "Adding to wishlist..." message pops up, but is replaced by one that says "AppName could not be added to wishlist". When I go on the website and click the add to wishlist button, it says "An unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later." I hadn't added things to my wishlist for a while before today, but it's a pretty annoying issue.
It appears that I can install from the phone and remotely via the website as normal.
Problem solved (for me, anyways)
Well, after a lengthy back and forth and escalation to a higher support person and engineers, it turns out that they issue is the fact that the Google Play wishlist has an item limit!!!! There was no notification of this anywhere, and the error messages gave no indication that this was the case. I'm able to remove items and add new ones, but I'm pretty annoyed that this is even an issue, and that the error message don't say what the issue is, since Google Play knows exactly what the problem is.
I've attached screenshots of the error messages I received. After learning that there is an item limit, I tried removing an app. I was able to remove it, and re-add it. I then removed it, added another app, and was unable to re-add the first app.
Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
how many?

I am already at my limit because it keeps happening for more than a week now. It started happening a little after a playstore update so I thought that this might be the issue. Cleared data and uninstalled updates but it kept happening so it really must be a limit.
I can check how many apps I have added... Is there a count or should I go and count them on my own?

lol, yeah you need to count them!! But the quick way to count...
I can see there are 3 rows of apps on my mobile's screen. I just counted every 3rd rows while I scrolled down. It is 51.
51 x 9 apps = 459 apps plus 7 apps on last (52th) page.

Try turning off Photos Sync, Picasa Sync and auto upload by Google +, Facebook and so on.
Turn off any photo syncing and after that make sure you delete the gallery cache.
Unfortunately, everything was already turned off. I turned it on then off again thinking that it was bugged, but nope. Folders are still there. When i delete them and quit the gallery app, they just come back again.

MediaScanner is not running correctly , thanks @It_ler for the hint. :highfive:
On some devices, connecting/disconnecting of the USB cable triggers the MediaScanner.
Here Rescan Media app from Play store to simply call the system's MediaScanner process.
If you don't want that the Gallery to show pics from special folders you can try to place a file called ".nomedia" into the folder(s).
Then trigger the media scanner again.
Thanks for your help but the app doesn't work (Crash right on startup), i tried other apps doing the same thing and all of them crash on startup or when i press the scan button. I'm not at home right now so i can't say much about the .nomedia trick. I think my root is just really ****ed up... I should unroot and start on a clean device. I think I'll just install a custom ROM

Voiding the warranty will not be a pleasant thing to do, but I'm annoyed as hell by some of the things that are happening in ZenUI:
- Disabling Google apps i.e. chrome, duo, YouTube is futile since the apps turn back on again.
- Since chrome can't be permanently disabled I can't click on links in apps such as Sync for Reddit without chrome opening automatically asking me to use Chrome.
- Some accessibility settings that were turned on randomly turn themselves off after a reboot. In my case it happened to a password manager that was suddenly no longer able to auto fill fields in my browser.
- I can't seem to switch songs with my volume control . Simply a feature I really miss.
I'll give them one update to see if either of the above improves. If not I'll install a custom ROM.

It seemed to happen once via Playstore downloading languages for something, could never catch exactly what triggered this.
Anyway, after several reboots and redisabling, it hasn't happened for two days now.
Don't miss disabling the 3 Facebook system apps.
They at least have remained disabled.

I don't agree.
I think Asus has done a very good job with this one.
All the custom roms seem to have all sorts of various problems.
The 4 Google apps Asus had to preinstall to keep on the right side of Google.
As long as they finally stay disabled, I'm ok with that.
The Fakebook stuff is more serious, IMHO they made a bad judgement call installing the Fakebook stuff.
(Maybe they get paid for doing that?)
But the apps don't seem to do anything while disabled, I have Netguard monitoring them.
And I haven't found anything else problematic at all yet.
.
Advice from some 5-7 year old threads just came in:
Disabling the app "Google Partner Setup" will stop the automatic re-enabling of other apps.

Thanks for this. I didn't stumble upon such a thread when I was searching for a solution. Let's see how it goes.
As for ZenUI, it's definitely not the worst and I like how little bloatware is included. Perhaps I'm a bit quick with my judgement and I'll wait for a next update.
The fact that apps that require accessibility settings cease to function after a reboot until I simply open that app is a huge pain in the ass tho. Examples include: bitwarden and swiftly switch (pro). Hope this gets fixed. I was wrong in saying that the accessibility toggle automatically turns off. I assumed that because said apps don't function as intended after a reboot.
As for custom ROMs I'll definitely wait. I went through the threads and there seem to be quite a couple of issues that need to be ironed out first. Flashing a ROM now might open new doors to other problems that are bigger than the ones I'm facing right now.

As someone who just spent a week trying to get LOS installed and is going back to stock, I can testify that custom ROMs are not ready yet. All of the necessary elements (recovery, ROM, gapps, etc.) have multiple showstopper issues. Add on to that the confusion caused by A/B partitions. I've never kept a phone stock before, but I'm flashing stock and will check back in 6 months to see if custom ROMs are stable by then.

You have them too.
Look in Settings/apps/, choose "all apps', then in 3 dots at upper right choose "show system".
Then scroll down to "face".
I found them via the firewall app Netguard, recommended.

FWIW I have three facebook apps listed (after uninstalling the main app) - "Facebook App Installer", "Facebook App Manager" and "Facebook Services". Don't know what these do, so I just disabled them. They're disabled now so I'm hoping they can't get their podgy fingers involved in anything?

Yep, blocking them was recommended by someone already earlier in this thread. Good find either way.

I have been tracking their potential attempts at internet access via Netguard, and there is none.
So they do seem to stay comfortably disabled.
The other preloaded apps that I repeatedly had to disable have also remained disabled for a week now, so that problem seems to have gone away.
(Or are they just waiting for a wakeup signal from the mothership? )
Have someone tried disabling apps using Island or similar Android-for-work software? It says that it can work without root by setting the software as a device owner using adb... Because with every possible app disabled (GP, FB, etc) their folders on Internal Storage still recreated after removal.
