Corrupted MP4s on microSD causing random reboots - Asus Transformer TF700

I have had a 64GB stock TF700T and dock for over a year now and other than having a digitizer replaced under warranty, it has been relatively trouble-free – I‘m one of those lucky owners not having severe lag problems, etc. But recently it started rebooting randomly several times a day, even occurring when in sleep mode. I tried a number of different things to isolate the issue but the only thing that appeared to work was removing and leaving out the 64GB SanDisk microSD card. It was formatted exFAT so I copied the files off of it and reformatted it as NTFS and copied the files back to it and put it back in. Still got reboots. That’s when I noticed that the PC copies of two of the mp4 videos I copied back on to it did not show picture-based thumbnails and when I tried to play them, media player said there was a problem with them. I deleted them from the microSD card and now, 40 hours later, I have yet to see a reboot. I can’t prove it, but I think the files were originally corrupted when copied from my PC to the card in the tablet.
Anyone see similar problems?
Dave

A follow-up: This seemed to only reduce the frequency of reboots, not eliminate them. I came across some discussions from the Sept timeframe regarding reboots associated with Chrome Beta, which I had installed recently. I uninstalled this and have now been running for 70 hours without an issue.

MicroSD Card filesystem corruption

My HTC Touch Cruise corrupts the microSD card filesystem very often. I installed SD Sentry to warn me of it so that I can soft reset the HTC and prevent the corruption to became permanent. I know there was a similar problem on the P3300 and HTC made a patch for it. Is there a solution for the Touch Cruise?
I doubt it's a wide enough problem to warrant a patch as there would be a lot more people mentioning this kind of fault. I suspect it's a dodgy connection in your SD slot. Have you tried re-seating the card?
Yes, I did pull out the card and put it in again. The problem remains. It doesn't fail while reading from it (nor writing), so I think it's not a bad connection issue.
My 6GB MicroSD card was acting funny. Files were disappearing but there were on the card if I read it on my PC, strange.
Anyway, I copied everything onto my desktop, formatted the card and put everything back and I haven't had any more issues since. Hopefully that did it.
I have come across another topic on this forum reporting the same problem. It appears as if more people experience similar problems ....
I have the same problem encountered. My 4G memory card has been corrupted 2 times in 3 weeks. It happen after I taken the pictures. the first time was the whole picture folder become some funny text with the .iff extension. The second time was added additional my document folder. My problem right now is that, I'm not sure is this my touch cruise causing the problem or the sd card.^o)

I found the problem, this is due to the defective sd card. although kingston claimed that their sd card without problem, however the problem gone after I placed the new replacement sd card. Anyway, I am happy now.
I had the same problem, since I use a diamond rom (from udk) it's gone...

I had similar problem after just 2 day of usage. I bought SanDisk 8 GB microSD card and put it in my HTC. After taking some pictures another day, the album froze. Went to File Explorer, the card was blank. System>Memory stated it is a 7.3 GB card (that's OK) and that it has 2 GB data written (that's also true). I tried reading data from various card readers, connected to a PC, but I had no luck. Some even couldn't see the card. I managed to reformat it and had no problems since.
I didn't have this problem when using the 1GB card included with the phone. But ever since I changed to a Kingston 4GB card (less than a month), I've encountered this problem at least 4 times.
My DCIM folder disappeared once, DCIM folder was emptied after using the camera once, the SD card was filled with folders named with random characters once, and my backup folder was emptied once.
I'm still trying to figure out what is the cause.

problems with files disappearing from sd card.

ok so I have been having a problem with various types of files disappearing from my sd card. I first noticed it last week, with some apps disappearing. I knew only because the links in my home screen folders were replaced with the stock android pic. then today, I noticed all my ~9gigs of music was gone, as well as all my pictures.
I can think of only 2 explanantions. one is that this is root related, as 3 or 4 days before the first problem, I rooted with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064257
but I never installed any custom roms or anything. second possibility, is that the sd card I had was bad. I am switching to a different one at the moment, so we can at least see if that does anything. in the meantime, does anyone know what the problem may be, possibly even a solution?
I did a search or two, and it seems there have been scattered problems like this with various android phones for a long time, although I never saw that anyone found the problem, or solution.
Its either your SD card or phone hardware related.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Have you made sure you checked both internal memory AND external SD card?

[Q] What in the world is happening with my microSD card?!

Hello all!
<Story>
I recently noticed that I was receiving a ton of Force Close messages on my HD2 and decided to restart the device (which I hadn't done in a while:laugh. When the device started back up, I realized the apps that were reported to have force closed, hadn't actually crashed.
Then I noticed that K9 mail was going crazy, showing the "updating" notification every half second on each account. When I decided to read my mail, it seemed as if they were all from the previous day, showing up as unread! Then I went to open the new version of Firefox, which I had just read about and installed ... but it was nowhere to be found.
Since I was sitting next to my computer at the time, I quickly looked up some stuff on xda and saw people were recommending CatLog, which I immediately installed. Upon attempting to open the application, I was met by a barrage of force closes including system and Trebuchet.
Panicking, I pulled the battery, cleared the Dalvik cache and fixed permissions, which unusually, completed instantaneously. I attempted to reinstall Amarullz's a2sd script but after copying it from my computer to the SD and booting to Recovery, I never saw the file I was looking for. Trying this process a couple more times, I honestly questioned my sanity but then speculated senility ... I DID just copy that file, didn't I?
</Story>
Apologies for making you read that, but I pushed the problem aside and used my phone for two more days (it was painful) before finally writing this.
EDIT: RELEVANT STUFF BELOW, STORY ABOVE
I did some testing and it seems like my SD card is somehow bugged but nothing really confirms it, diskcheck says everything is fine. Windows explorer doesn't complain while copying. And files that are copied DO work until the card is ejected, at which point it reverts back to the prior state :/
EDIT 2:
downloaded TeraCopy and verified my copied data (see screenshots)
Funny thing is that the data copied is NOT the same - the checksum indicates corruption, but when I tried it again, the checksums were the same! When I open the video files, music I had copied onto the card a week earlier began playing!
Is this thing read-only? The card is not full, neither is it a fake.
Formatting the card in Windows 7 causes a "windows was unable to complete the format" error when 2/3 complete (not quick format)
Even though it seems that it was mostly formatted, the data is still intact. Quite odd.
microSD Card Details:
Manufacturer: Apacer
Size: 16GB
Partitions: 2: FAT32 and ext3
TL;DR: ???Read-only??? microSD card but not sure: no errors while writing data, no errors reported by diskcheck, no corrupt data.
Same thing happened last week
I had the same thing last week with a 16GB SanDisk in my Nexus One running CM7.2. It started with a couple of force closes, then after a reboot just about every application (over 100 on sd-ext with S2E) force closed and the system became unusable. Tried various things and eventually found out that I could write to the card without any error, the files seemed to be there but were gone when I reinserted the card. Even deleting a partition from gparted on Linux showed no error but the partition was still there. The card is 18 months old, I sent it in under warranty.

[Resolved] Tablet rebooting randomly + file changes are reverted

Hi,
I've got an nVidia Shield Tablet (not rooted) with a 64GB card formatted as internal storage.
In the past two days or so I have noticed that the battery drains surprisingly fast, and have noticed that it is rebooting by itself, particularly when I'm trying to copy files over.
I'm leaving tonight for a couple of months so I was loading some useful documents and files but then realized that not only was it rebooting often, but none of the files were retained after the tablet reboots itself. I tried to delete some files and when it rebooted those files reappeared too. In file manager the storage space is now at a constant 38.08GB, if I add anything or delete anything when it reboots it just goes back to that 38.08GB mark and all the other file changes would have been lost. However, all the videos / documents / pictures / apps that I had on there still all work with no problems.
Oh and as I was playing with it just now Google Play Services just crashed, which was something that I had seen once before in the last couple of days as well.
Are there any diagnostics tests I can run? I tried mounting the SD card on my PC but since it's formatted as internal storage it could not be recognized by Windows so chkdsk does not work.
Any help would be appreciated! I really hope I can get this sorted out before I have to leave, since I was really counting on being able to use it to do some work. Thanks!
Edit: It seems to have fixed itself somehow... how odd.

Note 20 ultra Disappearing video, unrecognizable file type.. and more crazy things. HELP!

So last week the tornadoes hit my hometown in Western Kentucky. If you watch TV, then you have seen it. 75% of the town is wiped out.. I have (should I say had) amazing video from that along with the destruction, the fear, there aren't really words for it all.. several friends are having issues with insurance and looting. I'm hoping some of their belongings are on my videos so police can prosecute the looters. (Totally not cool to steal from people who just lost everything.) Here's my dilemma
A couple days prior I changed My settings in my phone to record straight to sd card so I didn't have to move files to it. It's a SDHC. 1024GB MICRO SD. It was formatted because I've been using it for a while... just moving photos over to it from my gallery, no problem. Later that day I went to show the video and when I opened gallery I watched every video I had disappear and be replaced with the grey box and white exclamation. Photos I took are fine... eventually it has now greyed out 95% of my video.
I've tried playing on pc, with vlc, media player, Samsung video player, "unrecognizable file format " They are mp4. Here's what I noticed interesting.
I checked the SD card and it says healthy, no bad sectors.
The time length on each video says 0.00
The size of the file is different from the size shown in my explorer on my phone, pc, and what's shown by a file explorer/recovery program
I changed my settings back to record to the internal memory but still nothing.
I'm guessing headers or something didn't transfer or or hell who knows
I've changed the file extension and name. Nothing
I've tried converting but the file type isn't recognized.
Help! Here's photos of what I see
The last time I saw something like this, there was an issue with the card, not the phone. That doesn't necessarily mean that's your issue. But it's highly probably.
I agree it's the most likely scenario. Best thing to do is take a few similar test videos and replicate what you did on a new or different microsd card and see how it turns out. If it works and retains it then it's the original card. If not then it's an issue with the phone/ hardware itself.
I actually ended up copying the card and put it back in... the recordings I made next were fine! No settings were changed, and it's only the one Day they messed up... could it be because there was zero cell signal in town? Nothing could upload to the cloud.... I know moving files or even recording straight to sd will leave file pieces and signal most definitely should not affect storage on a device. I did get this data off one video though. Any ideas?
I've never heard of a data connection messing with storage of a device unless that device is separate and not directly connected. Again, doesn't mean it can't happen. But the most likely problem is still the card. You said you copied everything back on, what is happening to new content?
