I have question.
I transferred everything to my sd card, there was a function to choose from my phone settings. Afterwards I connected my phone to my computer- which was always detected by my computer without a problem-to clean out some cache files from game folders, using total commander. While I was deleting the cache files I believe I accidentally deleted the sd card folder on my computer (which was associated with my phone.) I know this sounds kind of strange, but I do not have root access or any rights to deleting system files from my phone since my phone is locked because I have a contract with at&t. Now after resetting my phone 3 times, my computer fails to recognize my phone when I plug it in. When I plug my phone in, it charges but it is not recognized on my or any other computer for that matter. My computer states that there is an unknown device but not recognizing it as my htc. I located the unknown device on the device manager and installed all the drivers requested of me from the htc device sync manager folder and that still did not work. I have contacted htc directly and I have contacted at&t. They were not able to offer anything beyond doing another factory reset, which I have already done 3 times.
So my question, is there anything I can do? My phone works and charges it is just not recognized by my computer anymore and I cannot add music or anything. Since my warranty is up should I just unlock my phone and install the new android version? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

A Ubuntu or any other LINUX OS may recognize SD CARD... Give it a try!
btw when you connect it and i assume you have Windows does it even show a semi transparent icon of Removable Storage?
1.What OS are you using on the computer?
2. Do you receive any sort of error messages from the cpu?
I have heard of corrupted or missing usb INF files on computers causing this exact same issue.

Since you don't have root access I'm assuming you do t have supercid or s-off. You could run the RUU. It will completely wipe and restore your phone to an original state. See the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Scroll down and you will find a link for HTC OTAs and RUUs.
Or , as you mentioned at the end of your OP, you could just root your phone and install a custom Rom.
I hope I've helped in some way.

Help! When I try to root my evo shift with gui shift root and recovery all I get is an adb error message. I have installed htc sync on my laptop. I also cannot connect to sync. These problems may be related? I am running windows vista.
sounds like the drivers may not have installed... Where did you get the version of sync you installed? You're best bet is to use the one off the sdcard. I've had an occasion or two also where things got messed up, and I uninstalled it all and reinstalled. (under programs and features you'll find HTC sync and driver installer, remove both and reinstall if necessary)
I installed it off the sd card and have did the install/ uninstall at least 5 times. still no luck.
i had same error but i just did mine maually. theres a video now for manually rotting it. if you fllow the steps you will root your shift

I'm in the same boat no matter what I do it my shift won't connect to sync and when I run adb devices it kicks a blank line then right back to platform-tools I'm running Vista myself and messed with it for hours and no luck I'm mad because I have rooted my shifts already and don't know what went wrong with the drivers sync or my pc this sucks as I need to be able to adb to help test some things

You do have adb debugging on right... the only other thing I could think of.
Yes I do have debugging on.
have you tried getting sync from htc's website to be sure?
If I'm correct the old version of syn from sprints website was giving me problems loading the drivers. I used the newest version from htc website and voila I was good to go. U may want to try that. I just re rooted earlier use the gui and it worked like a charm

I'm having the "error running adb try again" problem as well. Unfortunately when I try to run adb from the cmd prompt its output goes to a popup cmd prompt window which disappears before I can read it. My guess however is that it's blank like yours.
I'm convinced I've done everything they way I'm supposed to. Has anyone yet gotten the htc drivers to work under vista?
I had this same issue with ADB..all I did was, while connected via usb, uncheck debugging and then recheck. Clicked root again and it worked.
Sigh, there was a adb update. Install the new version from the sdk, delete the one in shiftrr, copy the new one in, close adb with task manager, then run as you were trying to do before. That fixed it for me.
And make sure when you install the recovery, not to use the one it comes with, it doesn't support the newer roms we have on the shift now. If you want to flash current ones, use clockwork 5.0.2.0, our twrp (recommended)
I want to use i-tunes with my nexus S.
Already installed i-tunes agent.
When I plug in the device via USB, it says "USB connected" with a green Android display however, it does not give me the option to mount.
I dragged down the USB icon on the top and tapped "USB connected", and nothing happens after.
Thoughts?
Btw, I'm running Gingerbread 2.3.4
Thanks

C'mon nobody uses i-tunes? My music is all messed up with drag and drop.

My suggestion would be to download mp3tag and tag all your music correctly so it then displays correctly on your phone.

I would suggest you begin eliminating variables.
Try on another PC. Try with another USB cable. Try another phone on with your cable and your PC. Etc.
Also it cannot hurt to download and install PDA Net on your PC. That is the easiest way to know you have the most recent drivers from Samsung installed.

I've searched the interwebz numerous times and I can't seem to find a fix.
My computer will find the SD card when I turn on disk drive, but not the phone itself.
I'm running Android Revolution HD 6.6.4 XE if that is needed.
It used to be recognized by the computer when I was rooting, S-OFF, and unlocking bootloader. When I was updating firmware I got into a bit a snag and got a bootloop, so I did the .img method on SD card with the bootloader to restore stock and it locked my bootloader again. Since then is when it cant be recognized.
Things I've tried-
1. Different cable and USB ports
2. Different computers (Mac and Windows 7)
3. Downloaded HTC SYNC for drivers, but it didn't seem to do anything.
Anyone have any answers?

Well, that would mean that using the OS would be sorta-kinda impossible. So it's not exactly a bad thing. Try another file manager, OI file manager, root explorer. See if you can see the file system.

first let me clear you some things
1.connecting your phone to computer..via disk drive..will only show SDcard...even if you are SOFF and have unlocked bootloader...on computer your phone wont show you anything other than sdcard
2.i think you are SOFF..and have locked bootloader...the only disadvantages of locked bootloader is nothing but..it prevents fastboot flash commands ..(these flash commands can be used to flash recovery, boot, radio, etc etc via fastboot)
3.to see the other files in Es-file explorer
go to es-file explorer->menu soft key->settings->path settings->check "up to root"
also check
all three in "root settings" in the same path given above to modify/replace the stuff in ROM
4.Now to identify your device in your pc....connect your phone to pc (from lock screen/home screen)
then go to your adb folder
hold shift + righ click ->open command window here
then type "adb devices" without quotes ..it should show your device (check usb debugging is enabled or not in settings->develop option)

you have adb in that folder
the output is saying that it doesnt have the adb command
try this just type ad and press tab...the window will fill the rest of the part (mostly the name would be adb.exe)
so type "adb.exe devices"
if that is working..then in the tutorial you were following...relpace adb with adb.exe and similarly fastboot with fastboot.exe

I did sort of the same. I disabled MTP and didn't enable MTP and that worked. You might need to do a fresh install of the drivers.
You won't get the pop-up by just plugging it in and toggling USB Debug, etc. You need to open up a program that uses ADB (Like WugFresh) or a command prompt in the adb/fastboot folder and typing -> adb devices (or fastboot devices if in fastboot mode). I just revoked computer permissions and tried ticking and unticking everything, and I couldn't get the auth pop-up. As soon as I started WugFresh, the pop-up appeared on the phone to authorize.
Still no popup
I tried everything in this topic and I still don't get popup RSA key.. working with nexus5 4.4.2 and windows8 and WugFresh toolkit

If you can view your card from the phone then you may have a bad cable or a bent pin

I would try a different cable and or switch USB ports
I had the same issue and it was due to a bent pin on my cable as mentioned above.
