[Q] Details about Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) - General Questions and Answers

I was looking online and couldnt seem to find a solid answer regarding Bluetooth 4.0 and what exactly you need to get it to work in the Low Energy way or form. How it works, as in the concept is written in plenty places that explains how it saves power, but there was no clear cut answer as to get that maximum efficiency on battery life.
Basically what i was wondering is, since most new phones have bluetooth 4.0, to get the whole low energy point applicable, does one need to pair it to a bluetooth 4.0 device/headset as well to get that benefit...?? iv been searching online and i can barely find any notable bluetooth 4.0 headsets so was wondering if pairing a bluetooth 4.0 phone (e.g LG Nexus 5), to a Bluetooth 2.1 or bluetooth 3.0 device (e.g Sony SBH52) will still give the same battery saving on the phone with the bluetooth 4.0...??
Or is it necessary for both phone AND device be 4.0 for the BLE to actually work...??
I know the bluetooth will work on these devices, higher or lower number, but im asking specific to the Low Energy usage aspect..

Any insight...?

[Q] Android phone as bluetooth headset?

Ok so this question has been issued 3 times on XDA already, and some more on the net. However, noone, on the entire world, seems to have an idea on what to start with.
Why can't my phone act as a headset (bluetooth)?
An Android phone (but could be another OS) has BT drivers, speaker, microphone... all it needs! I undderstand phones are usually designed to be used with a BT headset rather than as a BT headset, but i see many situation where that could be handy:
- two phones (all calls taken from one)
- calling through computer, but handling the phone
- same through tablet
Now, here on XDA there are all kind of skilled hardcore devs. Why nobody ever got the Android BT driver and apps to turn the phone into a headset? Whyyyyy?
Thanks for reading
because they all bought in-ear bluetooth kits and couldn't be bothered.
Why not just buy a logitech 930 and roam the house? Probably a bit better on the head and if you are friend with Beyonce like me, great to hear in 7.1.
Lol, i wonder why every single thread asking this question always gets the same answer: "why not buy a headset?"
Although i understand what you are meaning, this does not answer the original question
Can someone please answer the actual question with technical details or is this subject cursed for life to getting no answer/off topic answers?
Roam the house? Bluetooth has a very short range.
If someone made android headphones that streamed PC stuff over wireless you'd have a far longer range and much better audio quality.
i really need that.... (why not just buy "BT", very meaningless since you are not understand our situation)
For me, HTC Flyer (tablet) x 1, HTC ChaCha x 1, I have hundreds of BT headsets, but dont you think:
1. extermly trouble every day charging for 3 items?
2. to bring 7" tablet, one cellphone and a bt headset more?
3. *** MAJOR PROBLEM*** i have 1 SIM card only (network and phone), with two mobile... if i can put the SIM into Flyer and pick up the phone from ChaCha that will be wonderful.
Kind of like the above poster I have an Android phone with a no data plan, but I have a galaxy tablet with a tablet data plan
So it is an very troublesome to yell at the tab to talk on Skype or Dell voice or other voip.
It would be very good if I can use my phone to act as the headset
I do not want to hang a Bluetooth headset on my ear
So...anyone has any idea?
Hi,
there is a solution you can use the samsung galaxy player 3.6 device with android 2.3.6.
It is a multimedia player not a smartphone but it has the BT profile so you can use it also as a headset for your phone or tablet and it works really great.
It can be a nice add-on for a tablet or an oversized telephone.

Anyway this could be ripped out of a ROM for that device and made to work on others?
darn what a dissapointment to notify that it will not work.
I wanted to keep my work phone and private phone sepparated but picking up all calls with my private phone while no one knows my private number seems so great...
any news on this??

[Q] i9003 & BT car kit

Well, I found funny issue concerning using i9003 with BT car Kit. My car audio system is Sony MEX 2600 and Android Gingerbread XXXPM. Sometimes, after listening of music in car, Android will not disconnect it properly... Even though i'm not in the range of BT car kit any more, while picking up a phonecall, both me and person who is calling me don't hear a thing. It seems like phone still thinks that it's connected to car kit and is trying to transfer the conversation to car kit's speakers. It doesn't matter how many times in row it calls - each time I get the same symptoms.. I noticed that it helps to turn off and on again bluetooth, but it's not a proper solution...
Previously, on preinstalled Android 2.2 I was getting similliar problem from time to time... Symptoms were a little bit diffrient, but I'm pretty sure it was hapening because the device didn't disconnected properly out of the car kit...
I've been looking for the answer on many forums so far, but due to the fact i9003 is a little bit rare on the market, I haven't found any answer. Hope to find it here though...

Terrible Bluetooth Range

I'm curious if anyone else is having this issue or can confirm this is happening on their phone.
I'm pairing my phone up to a bluetooth car stereo (4 different ones) and a couple bluetooth sound docks, and the result is the same no matter what.
If I walk more than a couple feed away the music cuts in and out. it completely disconnects at around 12 feet.
I have never seen bluetooth range this poor, even on my cheepo chinese bluetooth adapter a coulpe years ago.
I called HTC and their only options were telling me to factory reset my phone.
I believe it is by design as part of HTC's "aggressive" power management...I have tried to find a way to increase the Bluetooth power but have not been successful...I have to be no more than 2 feet or so for mine to work..I'm sure there is a way to increase bt power but I'm not sure how...I think I remember seeing this in another thread..

^It was probably my first thread.
I'm assuming the reason the range is so bad is because the phone is running in low power mode, a feature of bluetooth 4.0.
Yeah, BT 4.0's main attraction is the low power usage. You can't have both great range (the old BT devices) and great battery life. Given a choice, I'd prefer great battery life.

Bluetooth 4.0 is multiple standards of bluetooth plus a low power version.
It should have better range than bluetooth 2.0, but with the added ability of a low range/low power mode.
The audio will cut in and out even if the phone is just in my pocket and I am using a bluetooth headset (Motorola Elite Sliver). If I cant find a way to fix this or it doesn't work with a different headset I am not gonna be able to keep this phone. I really like the device but the non-existent multitasking and the terrible bluetooth performance is pushing me away. When I work I use my bluetooth all day for either customer calls or just to listen to music/radio on down time and I can't deal with this for too much longer. I'd hate to go back to my iPhone but I may have to unfortunately..
pretty disappointed.
I'm also out of my return policy on this phone now, and they have no other good phones.
Hopefully htc comes out with a fix for this soon.
I've called them 3 times now and havn't gotten a single good answer to why its so bad.
Also emailed them and still no response.
I have also noticed poor range. Much less range when streaming Bluetooth audio to my LG soundbar compared to my iPad and buddies iPhone.

Same Here.
Me too, This is the worst BT I have ever had on a device.
+1
If my headset is on one ear, but the phone's in the opposite side's pocket. It cuts out.

hey guys, i just bought a One X and im having similar issues. there should be no excuses to have bluetooth cutting out like this on a new phone. My old Desire HD did it and i just thought it was because i had dropped it, but looks like its a HTC thing!

I have no problem at all anywhere in my car, I listen music and radio an average 40 mins a day (while comute). I have a bluelogic bt that came built-in the car.
I also haveno problems and no cutoffs on my stereo bt headphones and I often leave my phone on the table while I workout (true, under 10 feet away). If that matters, I'm on 2.20 stock.

Same here
i never used bluetooth with my ONE S before now. But I have moved it in to take over my business phone needs and replace my Sensation 4g. It is definately worse range. And if it it 10-15 ft away on the hood of my truck and i turn my headset away from the phone, the signal from my phone can't carry through my head. The sensation had no problems. The newer plantronics headsets are worse than the older ones as well. And putting the phone in my work belt on the opposite side from the earpiece is really bad. I don't know what to do. Might be time to fix my sensation and move back to an old headset.

[Q] Compatability with BT 4.0 low power heart rate monitors?

This is a super niche question, but I thought I would give it a shot.
The photon Q comes with the hardware for Bluetooth 4, but my question is whether the motorola drivers include all the power profiles, specifically the ones needed for the low-power heart rate monitors on the market.
To give some background: several phones have the BT4 hardware, but stock ICS doesn't actually support it. The drivers motorola rolled for their phones are said to work, however (the latest razr is given as an example).
These are the specific models of HR monitor (if anyone might have them to try):
Polar H7
Wahoo Blue HR
These are different from the other other HR sensors from these companies in that they use the new Bluetooth Smart protocol for lower power consumption.

Diagnosing Bluetooth problems

My app uses a Bluetooth connection to pair with external HW. On some phones it works as expected, while on others I have a lot of issues connecting. I'm going to get samples of phones that give me the most trouble.
1) Where do I find information about each phone's BT module? Is it inside the chipset?
2) Any tips you'd like to share?
Thanks!
I can't offer anything from a development perspective, but I can tell you that the Bluetooth transceiver is part of the SoC modem. However, be aware that the Bluetooth firmware stack actually dictates the capabilities of the hardware - you'll see little difference between, say, a Snapdragon 300 and an 800 if they're both running Bluetooth 3.1.
