[Q] Nexus 5 on AT&T - not going to LTE - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Earlier this week, I went to AT&T to get a new micro sim for my Nexus 5. It works fine on HSPA+. However, I never see it go to LTE. Using the speedtest app, my d/l speeds max out at 2.5Mbps.
I am in an LTE coverage area. I stood right next to a couple of my co-workers with a Moto X and iphone 5. Both of their phones say LTE.
I called 611 (AT&T customer service) to make sure I had LTE coverage. According to their system, both my phone and plan say LTE.
Am I missing anything? Do I need to do anything (play with any settings) to make LTE go on?
Help...

Is it set to LTE and CDMA/GSM?

LTE is selected

Interesting I'm getting mine today and will be using AT&T I'll let you know if I have the same problem

Very weak LTE for me too. I'm a little disappointed in that, but I'm getting 5-8Mbps down with HSPA+

My LTE works fine on AT&T, I've ran some tests and seen 30Mbps

is your account provisioned for LTE?

I'm getting LTE with no problem. I'm getting about 20 down and 12 up. The only so far I don't like is the speaker volume. It may be YouTube, but it's horrible.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

mine is correctly provisioned, and i do see LTE, but it's very weak for me where friends with a Moto X and iPhone 5 see full LTE coverage.

My Nexus 4 on T-Mobile would stay on LTE all day, but my Nexus 5 gets off LTE and goes back to HSPA+ when it drops to 2 bars or less. I am very aggravated. I can get it on LTE if I show it that there is LTE around by going to the secret dialer menu and enabling LTE only, but it is like it doesn't want to get on LTE unless it is 4-5 bars.
I need to see how my wife's Nexus 5 operates and I may end up RMAing mine.

I have yet to see my Nexus 5 on LTE (AT&T), i'm coming from an HTC One and that has connected to LTE without issues, not sure what the issue is, if AT&T is blocking it because its an 'unknown device' or what, has anybody discovered anything new on this?

Works great on AT&T's LTE network on the n5, SIM originally from a Lumia 920 also LTE.

No problem here with SIM out of S3. I did notice that he automatically changed my APN's. It only pulled ATT Phone and ATT WAP. Its set to Phone. I am roughly same speed as s3

I'm using a new micro sim since I was previously using a galaxy nexus. I'm thinking that it might be an apn setting issue. If there any way you (or someone else) could list their apn settings? A screenshot would be great.. Thanks in advance.

Works fine for me using the stock APN

I walked in my AT&T store, handed my Nexus 5 still in the box to a tech, she unboxed it, put in a sim booted it up, download SpeedTest app and with a LTE tower right next to the store these were the numbers I got.

exactly the same experience. walked in today with my N5, handed it to the tech, transferred my # (coming from VZW), activated a new sim, put it in and off i went into LTE land. no issues at all

I've had the same issue since I got my Nexus 5 last Monday. Went to store, she put in LTE sim. Mine only show H. That's it just "H". Called at&t several times. They tried different settings on the phone. Suppose to send me another sims card in the mail. Also, said they "escalated" my case to a specialist. I should have it resolved by Nov. 11th.

I just simply pop in my sim from my s4

4g lte

How's it going everyone I recently decided to get rid of Verizon n the galaxy nexus and bought a HTC one x..
I absolutely love the phone. My question is looking on the coverage map it says att has 4g lte service yet my speeds are much lower than what I had with Verizon. Is it att or is it the phone?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
You are not in LTE. The indicator will say 4G with a small LTE below it. You are in just plan HSDPA in the screen shot you sent. Which is really 3G. Much faster than VZ 3G. Ha. When you get in an LTE area you will see the icon on the bar and you will see the speed big time!
That's weird because from the coverage map it says we have lte
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Not sure what to tell you but you will see the indicator change when you are in LTE. May want to head closer to town or something and see of you see it change.
Appreciate it

Ok confused again just got off the phone with att. They said I'm in a lte area and that my phone would not say lte it will just say 4g or hspa+

Just because you are in LTE coverage area doesn't mean you automatically get LTE. I'm in LTE area as well but half the time my phone is not on LTE. AT&T's LTE towers are still sparse and coverage is spotty at the best. The buggy radio on HOX doesn't help either.

The CSR is clueless. Your phone will say 4G LTE if you are connected to LTE signal.
I had that problem when I picked up my hox they had to reset the apn or sumn to get the lte to kick in take it n to a att store

Indeed it wouldn't hurt to check the APN, and also check that LTE is on your account. If your account is not provisioned for LTE, you won't get it.
That said, the coverage maps have always been crap, and are just an approximation of where you get certain coverages. Its no guarantee of LTE, and things like landscape, buildings, etc. can always affect reception. This has been the case since 3G, and probably before that, where people did not have the reception claimed in the coverage maps.
Do i have to go to the at&t store or can they do it over the phone? Reset the apn that is.. Also now that I think about it when I went to Boston I also did not have lte. hmmmmm damn at&t customer service. Was hoping they would be better than verizon.
I went in so I could be like look your display has lte why doesn't mine

I just want to avoid having to put my phone back to stock take it in than redo everything if possible.
It has to say LTE. My phone as an example.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Settings > Mobile Network > Access Point Names > menu button > "reset to default"
If you call in to customer care, they can also make sure that you have an LTE data plan over the phone so you don't have to go in to the store.
Although from personal experience (I worked in an AT&T store) in-store service and advice is better than over the phone. I'm sorry the CSR over the phone gave you bogus information.

Also here is speed test with LTE.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Check the following :
1. Your phone has the default PTA APN configured on your phone. Don't use other APNs if you want LTE.
2. You have the microSIM from AT&T, not the old SIM you trimed down yourself
If both are true and you get 4G (non-LTE) data service just fine, there is no need to go down to AT&T store for anything becasue your account has been properly authorized (otherwise, you won't even get any data service at all). All you need to do is travel to different locations of your city, reboot your phone and see if you ever see the 4G LTE icon show up.
Gotta assume since they came from Verizon they had to get a sim from att or dealer
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Ok.. So I did the reset... Also checked online at my data plan and it is set for LTE. Looks like I have the pleasure in callin at&t again ..
Have you tried just going to a different location? Go to the ATT store and see if their demo phone is on LTE.
Have att sim n I've traveled never had lte went from va to mass

[Q] Straight Talk T Mobile LTE

I have Straight Talk with a T Mobile SIM in my Nexus 5 and I am getting awesome LTE coverage, although my friend has the exact same setup and is only getting H data and not LTE. We are both using the same APN settings, and the only difference that I can think of is that I bought my SIM card more recently. I didn't think that the T Mobile SIMs on Straight Talk supported LTE, but I am definitely getting it and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same. If you are getting LTE, what are your APN settings?

That's what I thought, but I am definitely on Straight Talk with a T Mobile sim and am getting LTE data. Not just in my area either, since I recently took a trip and had LTE coverage in many major cities.
I can confirm that the new ST T-Mobile SIM cards support LTE. Received my new SIM one week ago and have been enjoying LTE speeds for the past week. Interestingly, the color of the SIM card was hot pink as opposed to the light pink T-Mobile SIM I used to have.

Thanks for this. I tried to contact useless Straight Talk support regarding this question. They didn't seem to understand it, sent me the at&t APN settings, when I called them on it, they sent me the non-smartphone APN settings. They said that yes, t-mobile does support LTE, not just H+ (but I didn't actually trust them to understand the question), however said nothing about needing a new sim card. I have the light pink sim right now.
However I'm still not entirely convinced. Here's a picture on ebay of what I assume is the new hot pink sim:
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Straight-Talk-Micro-SIM-Card-T-Mobile-Network-/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/b7gAAOxy3zNSlQHw/$_57.JPG
You can see clearly on the card that it admits "4g" is HSPA+, not LTE. I'm also suspicious because T-Mobile has a different APN setting for LTE, while Straight Talk does not. Has anyone checked the "Mobile Network Type" in settings to verify that you really truly are getting LTE? Could the hot pink be because it's in micro sim size? The at&t cards have a similar color scheme (light blue for full sized sim, dark blue for micro), and I think offering the Micro Sim size for t-mobile is new, but the internals of the sim may not be.
Can someone post a speedtest speeds result of their "LTE" speeds? My H+ speeds are very fast, so I don't know if there'll be much difference..

Just curious if anyone here has been cutoff by straight talk. I read the small print, and you are only unlimited on their web space. So technically they can cut you off if you use too much data.

Its unlimited 2.5gb LTE. Then they throttle you down.. Maybe if you blew threw all your 2.5gb in five minutes by downloading a torrented movie they'd shut you off. All your data in less then a day.

Currently have the older card and i'm not getting LTE on TMobile. After reading through this thead, sounds like the newer cards will do it.

T-Mobile cel-fi

Any of you have this?
(I have one and wanted to hear from the group)
How did you get it to work?
(Mine was installed using instructions and followed as one should)
What's your thoughts?
(IMO it just doesn't work)
My signal is like a Gotdamn roller coaster, LTE forget about it, I have to swap to 3g/2g to get signal.
Sometimes I get full service but will lose it a minute or two later.
I frustrates the hell out of me.
Any suggestions?
I have an att account as well I know they offer a booster of their own do any of you have one and your thoughts on it?
Thanks for input guys.

Its a tmo signal booster. I have one. I live up on the side of some mountains and get spotty signal. So I called to and asked for a free signal booster and got one two days later. Have to give it back of you cancel service of course. Its very nice. Went from two bars to 5

Having att to send one out, I believe the att is like sprints airwave.

To xtrawho: AT&T and tmobile use similar cellphone frequencies and technologies. So getting an AT&T booster will do nothing for a Sprint signal.
(Sorry I can't quote anybody because xda app crashes every time I try to.)

Thanks for the info with tmo and att being GSM and sprint being CDMA/iDEN it should work great.
I'm buckin with ya.
I know this I was saying att uses a booster like the one sprint uses (airwave) tmo uses the old 2 box method instead of the 1 box.
The tmo shiat just isn't cutting it.

Did the CelFi really help your N5?
I have one, and it seems to do nothing for me... I found one link which suggested that it does not boost LTE... and since my N5 seems to prefer a crap LTE signal to an excellent non-LTE signal, it stays on LTE and makes having the CelFi rather worthless.
Or at least that's the only explanation I can think of. Can anyone confirm?
Hell no! It just collects dust, most worthless POS I've ever used. At least att and sprint offers a real booster.
As far as the LTE forget about it.
Hell I can force 3g only and still see no difference with that POS on for it being off, running signal strength in developer mode it doesn't change one bit.
Tried with N5 and 2 other T-Mobile iphones nothing, no boost at all.
BTW tested on KK and L, pushing 3g only, 2g only and LTE.
You can force by dialing
*#*#4636#*#*
If this is the older 1700/2100Mhz HSPA only booster it is a sucky device. I am swapping mine for the new LTE model.
Here are some tips on getting the old model working. You need to put the window unit in a spot that gets no more than 2 bars(If you get more bars the repeater will lower transmission power). Put the repeater unit as far as possible from the window unit. Window unit should be as high as possible( mine is in the kitchen on top of a cabinet). The repeater unit should be waist high or lower. If the repeater unit shows 6-9 on it's display that is good. Lower or higher is bad. The signal drop you see when using lots of data(ex. Speedtest) is because the booster has limited power output. Repositioning may be needed.
Also if you have 2 or more bars of signal throughout your house you don't need the booster. Your phone will constantly switch between the tower and your booster thus causing disconnects.

How are you getting a newer device? I did not know they offered one

Straight talk says HOME

So me and two people bought n5s and straight talk and got att Sims.
Two of us it says home as data network. The other says at&t. But the other has a NJ number. And we have MA numbers. But were all next to each other.... Why isn't it at&t?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Just replaced my Sim and it went from home to att. I am in the same location, and just assumed it was a newer Sim as nothing else changed.
And what's wrong with Home? I'm in Queens and it seems fine. Fast and always connected.
Sent from my Nexus 5
Just the point of it saying home vs att..which is what people want.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Shouldn't even say AT&T anyways, i'm on a MVNO of AT&T also and mine shows as H2O which is my carrier.
Net10 also says that so yours should say Straight Talk instead of Home. That's a simple SIM update though and it doesn't matter as mentioned. Eventually ST will push an update to your SIM which will change the naming.

[Q] LTE not working

Hi, I just got my S5 today and have been having quite a few problems. First one was that Best Buy forgot a step: activating my device... They're so incompetent... lol
So anyway, after multiple talk with Sprint I now have everything working but LTE. My S3 could pick up the LTE network when I was home this morning, but my S5 can't seem to ever connect to LTE. Of course I went to check the settings and the option CDMA/LTE is selected.
Anyone has any suggestion?
Thanks,
- Cascius
Not sure what's going on but my S4 signal was 10x's better... My daughter now uses it and she has full lte service and I'm barely picking up 3G... Contacted sprint and they are telling me to bring it in for possibly a defective antenna...

Hmmm... I'm connecting just fine. If you're having trouble with LTE in an area you know had it, try update PRL/Profile firstly. See if thatfoxes. If not, I would highly recommend just Factory Wipe and Wipe Cache since still early before development goes underway. Easy to reset up. I did and seemed to clear up any and all my issues at first.
I have not been able to connect to LTE either. After a reboot, it says LTE but then the antenna turns off and comes back on in 3G. If I go into the Sprint Zone app and try to test the 4G, it tells me to turn it on in the settings and never does a test. My wife's current S3 has no problem with LTE and the Sprint Zone test of 4G seems to work. I plan on going to a local store today and see about the problem.
I tried a data reset, cache wipe, PRL/profile update and no improvements.
It's a network issue with your area. This was a big problem for me when the nexus 5 came out. It's because of the new tri-band devices and sprints network not being updated. There is a a big article about it on s4gru. Trust me it's not your phone. That's why it connects to Lte for a split second and then goes to 3g. U just have to wait for sprint to update the towers in your area

no clue
at least you know its not your phone, and rather it is a network issue
Alright here's an update on my end: I get LTE in some areas, but not others (even though my S3 did)
- San Francisco: No luck in any neighborhood i tried... (PS I live in SF so this really isn't good)
- Napa (and highway 80 on the way there): LTE signal most of the way. (only 2-3 bars most of the time, but still, LTE!)
- Mountain View (where i work): LTE with full bars.
My take so far: the problem doesn't come from our phones but rather from the status of those towers. The fact that Napa's network would be better than SF is extremely surprising and disappointing to me to say the least.
Now here are a couple questions:
On my S3, doing update PRL or Profile would have a confirmation/successful popup. On the S5, it just shows a quick "Initializing application" and nothing happens. Are you guys also having the same issue?
Anyway, those are my findings so far. I've been a loyal Sprint customer since 1999, and at this point I might return the phone and cancel my contract in favor for Tmobile or ATT...
Oh well...

The fact that Napa's network would be better than SF is extremely surprising and disappointing to me to say the least.

yeah i am getting really upset with sprint too, been with them since 2001, i like my plan, but i have the same results as you in the same areas, no luck in San Fran, oakland, or dublin, tempted to go to verizon but i dunno, i like the unlimited data... but if i am gonna be stuck in 3G then there is no use
and the prl update should still have the conformation screen, i get it on mine

Oooooh, thanks for the PRL information. I think a recovery is indeed needed. I also forgot to mention that I keep getting a notification that there is a software update. When I click nothing happens... Then i go to settings, system update, and i get a message saying I'm up to date... Pfff... LOL
Regarding switching to Verizon: don't! With work I had an iPhone 5 on Verizon and it was actually worse than Sprint. (At least in the Bay Area)
We now have upgraded to iPhone 5S on ATT and it's definitely better. I've read that TMobile is pretty good too, but have no experience of my own.
Anyway, on a positive note: my S5 is much more responsive than my S3 and the screen brightness is awesome! I was just outside in the sun and could read emails with no problems. The camera is also a nice upgrade as the S3's camera was horrible. Aside from that it really feels like a nice incremental upgrade, but nothing more.
I'll post an update tonight after recovering etc...

Ok, I have been in Oakland for a few hours now, 3g the whole time, I cycled airplane mode, and now am on LTE for the last 10 min, so it seems like it isn't trying to search for lte after the initial time?
I have the same situation here. LTE only stays for a few minutes and then goes to sleep until it decides to wake up (whenever it feels like). I don't think speaking to Sprint will solve anything. It will be a while before we can see Spark in action, I think.
The problems lie with Sprint Spark. My S4 & Note 3 have great reception. All spark devices i activate barely get 1 bar. Its horrible. But its because of the bands they have the devices default on. They are trying to take less strain off of the current LTE single band and equal it out to all 3. Or just the 2 depending on your location.
This isn't a phone issue, rather a Network issue
