Camera stuck? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else have their camera stuck? Stock KK, I use face lock to provide minimal security to my phone. After the phone has been on for a few hours, the unlock (using front camera) shows just a black screen. A reboot fixes it right away. If I try using the rear camera, same issue - just shows a black screen. Want to know if a KK bug or something else.

Yup, its a software issue, it seems KK was rushed out a bit to soon and updates will come soon i`am sure. Try an alternate camera app from the Play Store if this resolves/eases the issue for now

[Updated] List of major problems in S4

Hi guys.
I am going to list the common issues with my i9500.
Got it 2 weeks back and have been testing it thoroughly. Currently on latest ME1 firmware.
1.Overheating
2.Camera Crash
2b. New crash issue: open camera, go to settings, press the mic (sound) button and the camera crashes.
3.Phone turns off all by itself.
(Hapenned twice in two weeks)
4.When the phone is turned on again, the battery levels jumps down to 10-15 percent less of what it was before. It is also displayed in the settings battery status graph.
5.When the volume is set to max during a call through earpiece, the slight vibration made because of the sound emission is felt on the back of the device (in a cheap way) every s4 has this issue.
6.Launcher redraw (Even after updated ME1 firmware but its improved and only seen when doing heavy muktitasking)
7. Screen smearing issue.
8. Slight pinkinsh/purple tone on the lower right half of the screen when the brightness is set to lowest.
9. Flash light less bright than other phones eg nexus or s3
10. Camera Lag when opening
10a. Shutter lag when taking photos
11. Gallery lag when opening
12. Dialer lag
13. Contact app lag
14. When the keyboard is popped out on say a white web page, the screen does a slight brightness adjustment that it almost feels like a screen flicker on low brightness. Then it changes colour tone from reddish to greenish.
15. Notification bar ocassionally stutters when pulled down or pushed back up.
Whoever gets any of these issues please keep confirming or adding any more issues I missed. All these issues are currently present in alot of brand new s4 units worldwide.
Erm, I have come across any of these. Try this to reduce 'lag'
- Open S voice and go in to the S Voice settings and untick 'open via home button'
- Go to developer options and change all the animation/window/transition scales to 0.5x
See how that works. Also exchange it for a different S4 if you have those problems. Are you rooted? If so try stock rooted and see if that was a software issue

In the quote section is the list of the issues I'm encountering on my S4 9500 vers. I have to mention that my phone reboots when the camera crashes. Another issue would be the battery life (10-12 hrs with 2 hrs screen time on).
I believe all of these issues are easily solvable via a firmware update. Hurry up Sammy.

Screenshot examples on this thread : http://www.nexus5forum.com/nexus-5-...t-a-nexus-5-for-christmas/?prev_next=prev#new
do you have root or a custom recovery running?
That's known issue, and there is one quite lengthy thread on official Google groups (if you are talking about when shooting in low light, right?).
Google is aware of it. They even contacted few of use to recreate this issue and send a bug report to them, and that was like 2 months ago.
This happened after 4.4.1/4.4.2 update affecting all users (as far as I know).

Yeah, I was also a bit confused, but he is talking about camera and photo mode (app), so I guess he meant video mode .
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I'm not sure if this is really a bug though. All phones I've used have darker videos than photos. Most likely because the camera isn't capable of longer exposures while taking video. I might be wrong though.
well, if you are running a custom recovery, heres a flashable 4.4.1 full camera/libs. video camera works perfectly for me, its not dark http://goo.gl/orWkC0
But the strange thing is that it was not like that before the update. Maybe they just decreased exposure gain to remove noise.
There is one more weird thing happening withing camera app that I came across trying to "fix" this underexposure issue.
I pointed camera to some dark area and then I was toggling between modes there (eg. From camera mode to PhotoSphere, and then to video mode). Exposure issue fixed itself (in video mode), but picture was unbelievably wide and stretched. And as soon as you start recording, it reverts back to original underexposed video mode. So I guess that is just some weird glitch.

I have CWM touch with CM11-M3 on my phone.
I will try the 4.4.1 app this evening, I keep you in touch.
Thank you for your help guys :]
Yea its a known bug with android 4.4.2 and also the static noise while recording video.
.

Are you sure that you are talking about the same issue? As far as I know, every phone has this issue after 4.4.1/4.4.2 update...
Here are my screenshots of camera app while pointing it to spot with poor lighting condition s...
Note that difference is even more noticeable in darker scenes...

So you are saying that it's normal for the nexus 5 to have an app camera less brighter than the photo app since 4.4.2? I received my phone a week ago so I didn't noticed it, it was already installed in 4.4.2

No, I am not saying that. Read my previous posts in this thread. It is known "bug". Google is aware of it (bug reports have been sent), and it is up to then to fix it or not.

Bad camera in 4.4.2?

Bad news for me - the camera in the new firmware has become much worse. Greatly increased color noise, noise reduction has become very aggressive. The result is blurred and "dirty". And the camera has become a kind of "click" while focusing.
Good news: Snap Camera appeared ISO setting from 100 to 2400 and HJR. Focus has become a little faster.

- Nexesque 3.6 (based on stock 4.1.2, build 9.30.1)

Just click on my photo and look at the details.
I'll be glad if anyone try to make test photo with Snap Camera or similar software (with better quality than stock Moto camera) before and after update to Kitkat. May be it was just a my mistake - may be i didn't do factory reset after update. But now I'm on 4.1.2 Nexesque again and happy with old camera quality)
I see this on my Wife's M, 442 also.
Get the latest Lenovo Cam in my Moto x page. See My signature.
I use the Google Camera app from the play store. It seems to have pretty decent quality. I also disabled the stock camera app so on the lock screen or when opening up the camera through a shortcut it opens up Google Camera versus the stock one. I'd try that if you haven't yet.

The only thing I don't like about the Google Camera is it won't let me state where to save my pictures. I do not like storing them on the internal memory. At least with the Moto camera, I can store them on the external SD card.
Lenovo is good but no way to save to extSD or OTG as it does on my X. Internal only.
On KitKat my rear facing camera in SnapChat stretches the pictures vertically. What's odd is that it worked fine for the first few pictures. Anyone else have that problem?
Tried to put all *camera* files from /system/lib of old 4.1.2 ROM to new Kitkat. First was /system/lib/hw/camera-msm8960.so and after rewrite and reboot with clearing dalvic i got a fail on start Camera app. Ok, i rewrote all remaining files like /system/lib/*camera* , clear dalvic and made reboot. Now i've got a bootloop)
So, is anybody know how to install all old 4,1,2 camera driver to kitkat?
Is anybody got same problem?
i think it's because your phone cant focus !
try other app with fix focus options
What do you mean - cant focus? I hold the phone, tap "shot" and after green square appears, phone makes the focused photo. On my examples you can see very noisy photos on KitKat, at first.
Any news in, guys?)

Solutions given here:
Use your warranty.
Change the camera.
Take a component out that doesn't let the camera focus.
Is the lens dirty? It seems worse if it is dirty.

I also have the focus issue. No rom, modem, or software update fixes it. It seems to be a physical issue. I can gently tap the side of the phone while in the camera app and the camera starts auto-focusing correctly again (for a little while). I'm ordering a new camera to replace it soon.

lollipop flashlight bug

Hi
Anyone having an issue with the stock flashlight app on the new Lollipop 5.0 not turning on
As a person working in IT and with crappy eye sight, this app really is a must for me.
A reboot of the phone will fix it, but by then the need for the light will normally have passed as I'll just ask someone around me for help
Found this was happening on the preview l as well, thought it they have sorted it in the finished release.
Cheers
Paul

Im asking to see if the light does in fact work. If the light doesn't work with the camera either, then your light may be broken
The issue is intermittent and a quick reboot always fixes the issue. I must check the next time it goes, if the camera is broke as well

I have no idea what could cause that. My flashlight comes on every time I toggle it. Tesla LED (I think that's the name of it) is a good flashlight app in the Play Store if you want to try a third party app and see if it works better for you

From what Ben36 is saying, it seems to be caused my leaving the flashlight on for a long period of time. So I would say it's a bug in the system that Google needs to fix. Try other apps like the one I mentioned and see if you get the same issue.

Had a similar issue today, flashlight turned off for no reason, then refused to turn back on until i restarted the phone.
never happened to me before until today and the only difference was that the phone was charging now.
I can say I am also having this issue and hopefully a fix is on the way unless cm does it first...
