Hey guys, quick question: I have my 32gb N5 in hand and am trying to decide whether to jump ship to ATT. Here's a question: can I activate my N5 on ATT with a new account and new number, test drive it for two weeks, then if I'm satisfied and want to make the jump permanently from VZW, can I port my original number over and replace the new test number I just got? Can that be done seamlessly without canceling the 2 week old account and starting another with my ported number? If so that's the route I'd most likely take.
Any insight would be great, thanks in advance.

Yes. Number porting is designed to be done once you are ready to move over. You can open the AT&T account, test and when you are ready, you port in your number with AT&T (into your existing account, replacing your temporary number) and that automatically closes your Verizon account. If you don't want to move over, you just cancel the AT&T account and the Verizon account stays untouched.

Get a GoPhone plan. Mine is $70/mo for unlimited texts and talking and 3gb data. That will give you a month. If you like it, you can port your number from Verizon when you're ready. I don't know if you can change your GoPhone number, but I don't see why not. Worst case is you have to create another GoPhone account to port your number. But unless you have a large family plan and/or are getting a new phone, GoPhone is much cheaper. For me, the sole number on my account and bringing my own device, I saved $50/mo using GoPhone instead of signing a contract.

You're welcome. It can vary. In CA you get 30 days, the rest of the country I think is 14 days. But, if you're bringing your own device, you don't have to sign a contract, and you shouldn't unless you're planning to get a phone free and selling it. If you don't sign a contract, you can cancel whenever you want.
The prepaid route would definitely be better, but if you are testing, postpaid pro-rated rate for 14 days will be less than prepaid for 30 days, but if you keep it, you will definitely pay more with a post paid plan. Hopefully you have a corporate discount.

Do you know how T-Mobile works in your area? Might be worth a check. They work great for me in San Diego, and with truly unlimited data for $70, I use between 12 and 15 GB a month without a problem. Their HSPA (4G) is almost always faster than AT&T's, and their LTE will often beat Verizon and AT&T in the same location, but if not, it's very consistent (and better than Sprint's). I never see any non HSPA (EDGE) coverage where I spend my time, but, it can be a problem if you're not in a very densely populated area.
Your mileage will vary of course, but might be worth checking out. They have a $50 (online only) pre-paid plan that comes with 5 GB of high speed data and throttled after. Could be useful for testing. They had a promo where their BYOD SIM cards were $0 with free shipping, but it's over now. They are $10 now, which is not bad at all.
My Nexus 5 does not show me what kind of network I am seeing, but, with some tricks, you can easily scan for LTE from all providers in your area. Use the *#*#4636#*#* menu to enable LTE only, then do a network search and see if T-Mobile, AT&T and/or Sprint pop up (Verizon will pop up if you are in an AWS enabled area). This can help you determine who has coverage in the areas of interest without spending a dime.
You can then force it on WCDMA and do the same test, and see what the phone sees. This will give you an idea of who has service, but not of the signal strength. I don't think the N5 has a way of looking at dBm of networks it can see without registering on them (or without a SIM card).

So my wife and I are coming from tmobile. There we had the 5 gig throttle but unlimited data. Verizon now offers unlimited as well. I'm still within my cancel period. Anyone hear of luck with getting ATT to give unlimited to a new cust if we threaten to return phones and cancel?

Yeah good luck with that. AT&T customer service is atrocious at best, and the order of the day is to nickel and dime the customers more and more while taking away more services. This phone has kept me on the network for a little while longer but before inspire came around I was more than ready to jump ship. My prediction... They tell you, "See ya!"
From what I have heard and read, they can only give you the unlimited plan if you've had it before and it was accidentally removed during the phone upgrade. And even those people are having a hard time getting it. Their system can't even offer it to you if they wanted since you've never had it. Again, this is just what i've gathered from reading here
I don't know if that loophole is still open, but.. Buy a used iPhone 2G and insert your SIM. After a little while you'll receive an automated text that unlimited iPhone data plan has been added to your account. Voila! Now you're free to grandfather that plan to other devices.

Yup, that still works.
You knew what you were signing up for when you switched, so I don't know why you would try complaining to at&t.
The iphone 2g thing still works. I did it on a new line with a new sim with out issue. Not sure if it still works if you do it on a line that already had service. I had two lines with them fire years and opened a new one for the inspire.
Of course I knew it signing up... just thought I might be able to live with it...

I tried using the APN for the LTE, but didnt recieve any internet signal at all. I am currently using the HSPA+, but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what could be causing the problem. Yes, I am actually an old employee and they never took away my plan, so I have avoided going into an ATT store or calling them for about 3 years. lol. What is the difference between an LTE sim and another one? I thought that they just got smaller.
I was in the same boat as you earlier this week. I was still using the same sim for probably the past 4-5 years.
I had to first go get a new LTE sim from the AT&T store. Mine was free although I've heard some places try and charge you.
Next I had to call up 611 and have them change my data plan which was previously listed as "Blackberry Personal Unlimited" <--LOL and switch it over to one of the new LTE unlimited plans.
Took about 5 mins on the phone with the ATT rep and I had LTE service. Congrats on the phone! I've had mine for less than a week and am loving it!

Corporate AT&T stores (from my experience) give you free SIMS....Authorized Retailers usually try and charge you.
I have never had a problem with my local AT&T Corporate store, it's the only one I will go to....I never go to an Authorized Retailer.
I really only go to BB because of the insurance being 9.99 a month

Call AT&T and have them provision your line with the LTE plan, there's a specific plan that needs to be added so that your phone will connect to the LTE towers.
I came from an iPhone 3GS. I was allowed to keep my unlimited data plan (which doesn't exist anymore for new people) and got my SIM for free. I did this at a retail store. I say just go in. Verify they aren't going to do anything you don't like before you give them your account info.

You may have to perform what's called an IVR acceptance. I'm recently separated from the company but I consider myself a decent expert on the processes. Did you order the phone from online/call center? If so, when AT&T sends the phone, due to you not being able to PHYSICALLY sign a contract when you upgrade/activate, etc., they place this feature on your account until you dial *862 (from the CURRENT, not new, phone) and accept the terms. You'll need the Billing Zip, Account Holder's Last 4, and the phone # of course. It's all automated. Try that out and THEN insert the new SIM in the SR. It amazed me how many customers would call CARE or go to a store and get stuck for hours because the "rep" thought it was a technical issue when it's really a 2 minute process.

I'm assuming you just attempted to just swap the SIM into the LTE SR and keep it rolling. They're correct when they say you need a new SIM. There's a coding to the network that older (especially 2008) SIM cards won't accept because the network hadn't been constructed @ the time. You will ALSO need an LTE data plan on the account so make sure you've done that as well.

My plan is super cheap right now, and I got the phone at a steal at 340. My sim card is old as hell, and I will see if it will work without me having to pay more for my old employee plan. Do you have the data feature as stand-alone or integrated into the rate plan itself? Some school districts did it that way. 99% of us have stand-alone. If that's the case, it shouldn't affect your current stasis.

Wow. Rather unique plan you have there. Looks like you have a grandfathered plan that isn't for smartphones. That being the case, outside of the iPhone 2g trick, you're stuck with capped data options.

I was able to keep unlimited grandfathered data with 4g, but no matter what i did, or who i talked to, LTE would take it away, so i said keep the 4g, im using a skyrocket, and i dont get lte in my area for now, so its kind of ok ( except for travel)
but i had to do this all on the phone with an att rep, nothing was doable online.

Will have to look into that, as I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. If that's true, I'll just never sign another upgrade contract with AT&T. Don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, I figure that as long as I have a sim card to swap into a new device (purchased elsewhere), and never sign a different contract, then I should be good to go. I wouldn't put it past AT&T to get rid of unlimited data altogether at some point, though.
Been using ST for a few months now.. My wifes and kids 4g phones are also on ST .. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner..
Are there any downfalls to Straighttalk? What are your download speeds? Do you still connect to HSPA+? Since they are using ATT towers, I wont notice any difference in coverage correct? I am just trying to make sure I am doing the right thing.
If they do change this I might change carriers after about 11 years. I am hearing they might start doing a family Data plan. If I can get my mother upgraded to a smart phone. My wife and I are all ready on Smart phone plans. If I can get like 5-6gigs for less then what 3 plans costs then I might give up my unlimited.

The speeds are the same.. On average I get over 5mb download on hspa.. Everything works, just set up the auto pay and forget about it.. It took about 2 hours for number to get ported after the online set up... Then you just delete att apns and set up ST apn and your good to go.
I'm not sure about ATT, but with Verizon, grandfathered unlimited plans stay unlimited for as long as you want, so long as you maintain the same plan. The catch? You no longer get subsidized pricing for phones. You either buy your phone unlocked elsewhere, or you pay Verizon's retail price for the phone.

If there is any truth to this, I will NOT be signing another ATT contract. My wife is on the 2GB plan but I am still "unlimited" and it's the only reason I am staying with them right now, even though I get throttled at 3GB every month.
If they pull this crap when it comes time to get a new phone... GOOD BYE ATT...
Straight Talk looks promising, read some good reviews, easy setup and I get to keep my Ice Cream Sandwich running Infuse.. lol

I believe that's for family/shared data plans...if I understand it correctly then for $50 everyone on the family plan gets a 1gb (up to 5) it days 1gb starts at $10 with $10 increments totaling to up to $50 and $100 for 10gb...that artical was kinda confusing and I didn't even finish reading it...
Also that's Verizon...so we still got some time before art copys them hopefully... :/

Verizon vs ATT
Verizon has better data plans than ATT, their 4G network covers more area than ATT but they don't have SIM cards. This means you will not be able to use your Infuse.
If you don't plan to travel overseas with your phone, maybe Verizon is the better choice (I hate to say it).
Try T-mobile. Their plans in general are cheaper than ATT's but their coverage is not the greatest.

I think I understand the logic behind this question, but I'm going to ask anyway because I want to see if there are any policy pitfalls before I take the plunge and purchase a One XL. This specifically is about AT&T and their LTE network.
I have an Inspire 4G on the AT&T network and I would like to buy the One XL and just transfer my SIM card (by either cutting mine down or by stopping by an AT&T store and purchasing one of the mini SIM cards). I don't want to have to sign up for a new contract because I have an old grandfathered data plan (unlimited) and I don't need the LTE network... I'm perfectly happy with the HSPDA speeds I've been receiving.
Has anyone done something similar or ran into any problems with attaining a new SIM card and not having to move to a new data plan?
On a side note, I was going to give my Inspire 4G to my girlfriend to replace her Iphone 3GS. I understand the SIM card is the same size and she doesn't have an Iphone specific plan... it's basic voice + unlimited data for smartphones. Anyone have issues with that type of transfer either?

Further, you do want to add LTE to your account. You can do so and keep your unlimited data plan. You just have to be specific about telling them to do it, and make sure they do it right. Its not completely straighforward for them. It took them about 15 minutes to figure out how to do it, and the rep had to call his manager over. They technically need to put you on a "new" data plan, but it says "unlimited data with LTE" and its only available for grandfathered customers. Its really the same plan you were on before, just with LTE added. Its no extra fee, you keep unlimited data, and you get the smoking fast LTE speeds. Plus your cap before getting throttled goes up to 5 GB, versus 3 GB for non-LTE plans.
Whether you want to stay off contract, and just pay full retail for the phone, versus subsidized pricing and an additional 2 year commitment is up to you. But all I've mentioned above should be true in either case.

I bought a One X and was able to keep my unlimited data. Also, when you go to an LTE data plan the data throttle cap for unlimited plans goes from 3GB to 5GB. There is plenty of reason to add LTE to your unlimited plan unless you really don't want a contract.
Looks like all of that was already pointed out. So X2 it.

Maybe, just maybe, if you truly wanted better battery life you wouldn't want LTE (since there is no way to disable it on the AT&T One X). Lol.

Awesome information! Thank you so much for your help. This isn't spelled out very well anywhere on AT&T's website. I avoided the 2 year commitment with a subsidized phone because they said I would lose my unlimited data plan. I didn't want to give that up with a new contract. However, if that information isn't correct... then I need to find a store with a competent salesperson. Anyone know if that's the case?

You can call them or got into an AT&T store and they should know that you get to keep your unlimited. I bought mine through Best Buy and they can make sure unlimited stays right there, although I still called to verify after.
Anybody at the store tells you otherwise, then they are lying.

That was easy... they did this over the phone. No changes to my account, new phone, unlimited data, LTE... very sweet! Thanks for your help again!
I have unlimited data. Got a new microsim and lte no problem. Only takes a few minutes.

Not having LTE on your account wouldn't make a difference in that case. The phone will still scan for LTE radios, whether its on our account or not.

I avoided the 2 year commitment with a subsidized phone because they said I would lose my unlimited data plan. I didn't want to give that up with a new contract. However, if that information isn't correct... then I need to find a store with a competent salesperson. Anyone know if that's the case?

But it seems to be getting a bit more common that people with grandfathered plans want to get LTE added to their accounts, as LTE is being launched in more and more markets, and their are more devices with LTE being offered by AT&T. So its not as bad as when they first started doing it. When the Vivid came out last year (the first LTE phone on AT&T?), I was reading lots of reports of AT&T reps accidentally taking unlimited data off people's plan, not even knowing/understanding what the customer was asking for, trying to tell them its not possible to keep unlimited data, etc.
Its gotten better since those days, but you still have to be careful its done right. Doing it in the store is good, the rep let me look on the screen to confirm the choices before finalizing each one. It did take a while for them to get it done right. The rep had to call his manager over, who had to sign onto an "older" system on his computer in order to do it, since my account was so old. But it got done, and at least they knew what I was talking about.

Talking about 'old'... I still had a 'blue' plan from the days before cingular! They had to upgrade my plan then because I was signed up for a legacy data plan that was a weird data+voice plan that wasn't carried over. I don't recall the reason but that was before I ever had a smartphone.

Wow, that really is old. Mine is nowhere near close. I've only been on AT&T/Cingular for 11 years or so. And only had data for maybe 5 years.
Might have been some major shift in technology that required the change. My father-in-law was forced to switch cell phone plans way back in the day when they were turning off the analog system and going digital!

I've heard too many complaints about Smart Talk to consider them a first option. They're good for basic AT&T-area coverage I guess, but not very heavy data usage. T-Mobile has less coverage but is much better about data.
Get a plan at aiowireless.com. They're owned and operated by AT&T and have great service. I've used them for 2 months now and don't regret switching from T-Mobile. I get way better coverage and LTE nearly everywhere. T-Mobile's LTE is still in infancy and only in a few markets across the USA.
AT&T is trying to buy Leap Communications which owns Cricket. If government regulators allow them to do so, AT&T will be merging Aio with Cricket. Same service, new name. Though Cricket has been viewed as a "cheap and crappy" pay as you go service for many years, if owned and operated by AT&T, I think it'll really boost it's way into competing with the bigger dogs now that it'll have better coverage and service to offer.

One son switched his galaxy nexus from ST ATT to ST TMob in Dec. His coverage (Orlando, FL/UCF) improved and dl speed went from 6 to 11/12MB . In June, I switched him to TMob $30 (100 min) plan. Coverage seems the same, but now he has 5GB high speed data. I keep extra $ in the account in case he needs more minutes but he hasn't yet.
I moved two Iphones (4s) from ST ATT to GoPhone in July. The other three of us live in a rural south Florida area with decent coverage about 100 feet from our house. We usually get a signal inside the house. Local coverage/signal the same; however, I no longer have to constantly (weekly at times) re-negotiate the data connections and mms just works. (ST never fully supported GSM Iphones. ) I considered aio but went with gophone. ATT installed the sims and made certain everything was working. All I paid for was the first month ($60.+sales tax), no sim or activation fee. Since then, I have gotten refills for $54./month--no tax.
I have a Nexus 4 and am still on ST ATT. I was waiting on my last 90 day purchase to run out before moving to GoPhone, when they actually became transparent with their data policy. I just purchased another 30 days and a new LTE sim in anticipation that one day, Google will actually make the Nexus 5 available. After I experience LTE through ST, I will decide to stay or go.
My Orlando area son will take my n4 as he will be on LTE with it. I will get ATT LTE when in covered areas with n5.
We have no experience with other prepay. We had been Sprint customers for 12 years until we no longer were able to receive a signal in our house (tried TMob with same results). I do thank Sprint for not caring about our situation since it made me consider prepay. The best thing about prepay is you can leave if you don't like it. If you watch forums (howardforums is great for carrier info), you can find out when good deals are available. Last month I picked up TMob micro sim for a buck as I was considering trying them again. As I mentioned, ATT did gophone set up for free.

I'm also thinking of switching from regular AT&T to Aio, although it will mean the loss of some coverage since it will only talk to AT&T towers (no roaming). From a practical standpoint, however, this probably isn't a big deal since 99% of the places I'm likely to be have AT&T coverage; it's mainly on long trips to the west (Nebraska, Wyoming, etc.) where it gets thin.

Yea, where I work, my office is in a basement. I sadly cannot get coverage in the basement with Aio Wireless, but I got 2 bars of HSPA with T-Mobile. My coworker who has Aio also can get service though, I assume this is due to antenna differences in our phones. I have a nexus 4 right now, and it's commonly known is has a crappy antenna compared to some other phones. I'm hoping the antenna on the nexus 5 will pick up reception better, but it's no big deal since I walk up to the main level of the office multiple times a day where I can get perfect coverage.
Tmobile's $30/mo prepaid is tough to beat overall if you don't use much voice. 4G, good coverage, and cheap! I'm planning to dump my Verizon plan after I see some good reviews on the Nexus 5. I'll save $53/mo even with my company's Verizon discount.

You can transfer your number. Typically it takes up to 8 hours for everything to work. It took me 2 weeks to even get texting working. Once it kicked in though, I had no issues sending/receiving texts to and from people. It was a bit frustrating going 2 weeks without texts. I was surprised when I switched to Aio wireless and it only took 2 hours for me to send and receive SMS and MMS.

Took me 40 seconds after I ported my number, but maybe that's because I ported my number from TMo postpaid to prepaid

I say try both yourself and see which best works for you. You can pick up a Tmob SIM for $1 on sales they have all the time, ST sims they go for like $6, so one month port your # into TMob and the next month port it to ST, see which one works best for you.
Tmo Pros: 5GB data, $30 bucks flat, no extra fees
Tmo Cons: only 100 mins (why i use talkatone and port my main # to GV, no mins used, only data)
ST Pros: Unlimited Mins, ATT Towers
ST Cons: $45 bucks + $3 something in fees, 2.5GB and after that they throttle like crazy (basically useless), they are picky with streaming music/vid

And depending where you live, ST actually has service whereas Tmo does not.
You can also try Solavei. Offers the most data for the lowest price. (4GB for $49. First two months are $39 right now.) Best value I'd say compared to what others offer. Runs off of T-Mobile.
