Always listening enabled? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the 800 has the ability for low power processing but Google choose not to use it.. Anyway we might see a developer attack this at sometime?

Bump for the goodness of this feature.

Well Qualcomm themselves have shown off the feature as 'Snapdragon voice activation'. I think at the least we could use the feature to listen to a phrase and unlock -> launch google now.
I am no dev. But I am sure the guy who gets it done sure will get a few beers on the house.

Yes! And yeah whoever figures it out will definitely get a few from me

Open mic+

Saw this great app
Get all of the features of Google Now, from anywhere on your phone, simply say "Okay Google" or wave your hand to activate.
What does this mean? Google Now becomes more conversational as after a search just say "Okay Google" to start a new one. And even better get the answers to your questions while your hands are tied, or when you're on the couch, or in the car.

Try another app called "Utter!"

This app is like a port of feature found in moto X. always on mic. and accessing google now..
Cool. Utter seems to be similar too

Utter is fantastic, I use it as a hands free when I am driving
How does either of these affect the battery? I know the Moto X has the X8 with the language processor which I'm guessing reduces the cpu load needed to keep the mic listening.
Any noticeable changes on your battery life?
Wow utter makes awesome job at first glance. But needs updates. Isn't even able to write sms...

[APP REQUEST] Motorola Assist Modification

I was wondering if any developers would be willing to look in to the Moto Assist app, I know there's a few of us that would like to be able to toggle the driving functionality on and off at will.
I work from home programming, so it's great to be able to just vocally tell my phone to read me texts, or answer calls... but then I'd like to be able to turn it off when I go out to dinner haha. I've already tried work-arounds like forcing car mode on, or downloading other apps. Nothing works as well as the stock Moto Assist app, but unfortunately it only works when I'm driving, it must pull from the GPS.
Anyway, if someone could look into this that would be awesome, it's a bit beyond my ability regrettably. Thanks! :fingers-crossed:
Like being able to say.. "okay Google now. Turn on moto assist"

Jeez, this is quite a shock coming from the Galaxy Nexus. I didn't realize developers for this phone would be so sparse.

No kidding. :|
I'll see if I can get around to decompiling the APK today and poke around. Hopefully I can bypass the driving check at worst and just have it always on, or always off.

+1 I think I'll donate $5 to anyone who does this
I thought of this one too
Look at these weird permissions assist has maybe we just need an app with these permissions

EDIT
New finding in SmartActionsHanashi.apk ... there's a service com.motorola.hanashi.CommunicationMediatorService (my guess on which service it is) and I think (I dont do much reverse engineering) we just need an app to activate the service after we edit the SmartActionsHanashi.apk to make the service exported (it is false ATM)...
I would try it myself but with no root I cant reinstall the SmartActionsHanashi.apk
Edit like 4
SmartActionsHanashi.apk also has all of the right resources. so i am 90% sure that this is the apk we are looking for.
If anyone would like to try my idea PM me, you WILL need root.

In all fairness, it's a completely different situation. I know with my Droid DNA it took MONTHS to see anything other than slightly modded stock ROMs.
I'm sure the Moto X community will pick up in the next few months but that being said i'll probably get a Nexus 5 to satisfy my urges.

New development assist app uses new modified smart actions app and there are rules in here that correspond to assist actions but using the ones they have all I can do is confuse the phone..... There are also strange actions that don't do anything except if in the driving sleeping meeting actions ....in the pictures I'm sitting at my desk but in the status bar you can see I'm "driving" but no texts are read and music didn't start either....
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk 4
Edit the command i got to open the assist engine is
adb shell
su? idk i just used it
[email protected]:/ # am start com.motorola.contextual.smartrules2/.app.AboutActivity
AOV is Touchless Controls
I believe LED is Active Notification
use with caution i probably messed up my assist just now
Is anyone still working on this by chance? The only thing about my Moto X that I wish was different is having the ability to switch having the phone read my texts aloud on and off at will. I'm surprised that such a useful feature is limited to only driving when there are so many situations where it would be useful. Being able to do this without needing root access would be ideal.
This would be very useful and definitely be awesome for a work environment.
I am going to try and do it again. I have some new ideas on how to do it!
Will post in here and make a new thread if profit is achieved :fingers-crossed:
I would defiantly donate $10 for this.
Profit

[Q] pedometer app on nexus 5

Does anyone know of any apps taking advantage of the pedometer hardware in the nexus 5 yet? I'm currently using noom walk but it's not massively accurate.
Cheers!

There's an app called moves that does an EXCELLENT job of this. The interface is fantastic. Highly recommend it.

Yes, it was the first to actually support the Nexus 5's pedometer.

have you seen this?
its very simple compared to the "big guys" apps..
http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1rcd17/need_beta_testers_for_lightweight_pedometer_app/
Here's one that users the hardware step counter on the N5, it has a nice ui and has achievements etc too
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.pedometer
Data collected by Moves can be exported to a variety of connected apps to track fitness over time, visualize travels, etc.
The AIRS ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airs) recording app recently added the pedometer as a dedicated sensor. It's not specifically focussing on step counting only but more generally on lifelogging. Its companion app Storica ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.storica) lets you view your daily step count, among all the other data you collected on your phone.
hope google develop its Now activity card better with pedometer data
I'm currently using moves app as a pedometer. It is nice looking and good app but consumes way too much battery. At the same time it feels stupid that both moves and google now are tracking my path. Hope moves developers gives options for phones with hardware step counters to turn off tracking path when there is no need for their own algorithms to detect steps but I'm not holding my breath because it is clearly big part of that app's user experience what they want to offer.
So my second thought is that now when android 4.4 and hopefully more devices with hardware step counters will come to market google should develop google nows activity card better. I don't see any point in that card currently only showing once a month. Hope they will develop it more in the way like moves is currently. Google now already tracks the path like moves and now with pedometer they should count steps and give chance to user select how often they want to see that activity card. I think they should give a option to show daily activity card with path, steps, distance and walking/cycling/running time like moves do. Maybe even burned calories.

mobile data not available while you're on this call

I started getting this pop up message on my VZW Note 5
mobile data not available while you're on this call. It happens when I am working with a webpage or app and a phone call comes in.
Anyone have this come up and figure out how to stop it?
You can only have data and voice at the same time if you are using advanced calling. If not, data switches off when on voice.
Great, I cannot turn advanced calling on...... This didnt start happening until recently.
Try signing up for it in your control panel on the website under "my services." It might be switched off from there. After doing so you should be able to switch it back on on your phone.

Yes, for the newer phones like the note 5, they do not have dual radio's. Meaning can not surf the web while on a phone call unless;
You have 4G LTE signal and you have advanced calling setup in your "my services" and in settings of the note 5.
You will not be able to surf the web and be on the phone if you have 3G, unless you are on wifi This is a little annoying because on the note 3, you can surf the web and use data all you want. We didn't have to have advanced calling 1.0 crap to use it and even on 3g we can still use it without wifi. But hey, price we pay for to use the latest and greatest on Verizon.

Yup, that's Verizon for you. Always finding a way to screw you into paying more money one way or the other, and make you like it too.

I'm pretty positive that isn't Verizon's fault... Negotiated contacts explicitly offer things as options (and in many cases they are $0 no cost options) so the business or government can decide what they want in it.

Makes sense now that you pointed it out. Although I can't figure out why they would deny it. Unless it poses any security threats I am unaware of.

Two thoughts...
It makes it harder for the NSA to snoop... It wouldn't surprise me if it was discouraged on government contracts.
Or their agreement was in place before advanced calling was available and they haven't updated their contact to add it yet (governments move slowly).

Voice commands not working.

Hey all just got a g5. After the s5's screen I got two and a half weeks ago went out. Also desperately waiting for root, but anyways getting off topic. I love the phone more than I liked my g3 (So I know a pretty good deal, or not lol). Here's my question. I bought a pair of the lg tone pros. I want to use voice commands to switch artists, as well as make calls when the phone is locked. So I used the google app to change artists. Only problem is after the phone is locked it will switch artists maybe twice before it stops(using voice commands). I unlock the phone, and it'll work again. I have ok google enabled from any screen as well as trusted voice. (I turn them off when I'm not listening to music/in the car.)
The apps I'm using.
Greenify: turned off aggressive doze (thought that might be the problem.)
Phonogragh: for music.
Google app: for voice commands.
Thanks for any help. This is really the 1st time I've used vc on android. Also if this is a google app specific promblem. Anyone have any better recommendations?
If you need anymore info just let me know. Thanks again.
