[Q] Diagnose my Nexus please - Can't turn on - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am not sure what I did wrong. Every time I turn off my phone like trying to reboot or get into recovery mode, the screen just turn off black and stay there forever. I have to spend over 10 min everytime trying different way to make the fone reboot into recovery mode. Sometime it took forever to make the phone start up normally.
Can anyone point me to a right direction. I am runing CWM recovery right now.

What were you doing before the problem started? Little bit more info please dude

I think its best to flash a factory image at this point to get the phone running normal again, after that start over by rerooting bro. Btw have you cleared the cache after flashing CWM: fastboot erase cache.

I forgot how I flashed CWMR, but every time I turn off the phone into recovery mode, it will turn off forever. Plus, when I am trying to back up in CWMR, it still give me the same black screen.
The problem is that I really dont want to turn off my phone again. Every time it took me at least 10 min to find a combination that can turn on the phone. I dont think this is good for the phone.
I am trying to revert everything in fastboot, but the problem I face is that I am not able to install nexus 5 driver on my windows 8.1. I have tried more than 3 of the guides on xda but the device manager wouldnt recognize any of the driver.

You may try this:
1. Download these drivers USB Naked Drivers from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386956 and extract the file once with 7-zip or a similar programm;
2. Connect the phone to the pc and look in windows device manage, rightclick on the Nexus and select uninstall all drivers and after that choose to uninstall the device;
3. Pull out the usb cable and reconnect and stop windows to install any drivers and select choose drivers on the pc or something like that and choose install the extracted usb naked drivers file and install the drivers.
That should work.
-Edit- install the drivers with usb debugging turned on and off!

[Q] Unbricking Samsung ACE SPH-i325 from bad flash`

Does anyone know how to recover and unbrick a Samsung Ace from a bad flash. My friend tried to upgrade to WM 6.1 using the official upgrade available from samsungusa.com.
All went well, so he says, and the device reset. Instead of loading up it became stuck on a bootloader screen which dispays the samsung logo and www.samsungusa.com.
All attempts to hard reset:
1. hold soft keys
2. press power button
3. press left soft key for clean boot.
have proved futile.
when it is connected to the USB cable it does not recognize the device.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I do not think that a call to Sprint Help center will help so I will have to find a community assisted solution.
first advice: after a flash, the initial boot takes very long compared to the normal boot - so let the device sit for 5-10 minutes after switch on, leave the room, have a coffee and wait.
Not sure about the upgrade process for Samsung, but the normal sequence is anyway that the device enters the bootloader when loading the new software.
So as long as you have the bootloader (are you sure it is the bootoloader and not some splashscreen?) nothing is really "bricked".
First make sure you put the device in bootloader mode, then you can just retry the flash with the device connected via USB sitting in boot loader. AS will not find it in this mode, but the flash program should after a while and then continue with the flashing.

Thanks Tobbbie, with the above I should be able to clarify:
But first my apologies for my newbie-ness. I did leave the room, went to be, got up and still no change. I am attaching a pic of what I see on the phone. It seems to be the splashscreen.
I am still able to access the hard reset screen using the procedure as shown in the original post, but this takes me nowhere either. Doing a hard reset takes me back to the logo screen with text : "Clean boot mode" included. this also sits for hours.
I was hoping someone would be able to post a solution of the form seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=689423
Sorry, cannot help any further here as I do not have this device. If the flash process from the PC does not recognize the connected device in this mode, try to disable USB connections in AS and retry flashing. Normally the flash-SW on the PC will terminate AS so this is not required - but just in case...
http://www.samsungmobileusa.com/i325/upgrade/
try to reinstall the usb drivers or try another pc! Do you use vista? try XP! Remove SIM and SD-Card
Did all the above recommended but came up blank. Still hoping for a solution from the community.
same problem,i tried to upgrade to wm6.1,on the middle,my pc restarted and iam struck.pls some body help me.
I have also same problem. if any one have tested solution plzzzzz share

Go into the ODIN thread and read extensively. Since you can get into download mode, make sure that once you connect your phone you get the COM notification in ODIN. Mine always appears in the small box in the upper left portion of ODIN one-click (if you don't get this, reinstall the samsung drivers found in the ODIN thread and reboot. If you're running Win7, make sure you run ODIN as admin).
Master Clear does exactly what it says...it wipes all of your data. MC is only supposed to be used when your phone is on and fully booted up with USB debugging on.
Flashing back to stock should only take ~5 minutes max - if it halts unplug, pull your battery, wait a few seconds, and restart. If it continues to fail, try a different USB port. If using a PC, use the back USB ports. If it still fails, try a different system. (I had this issue this weekend and finally got it on the first run on my friend's laptop - not sure what happened, had flashed 5-6 times on mine previously).
Hope this helps. Once you're back to stock, be sure to thank designgears for his killer dev work!
EDIT:
PS It's pretty tough to brick a cappy - read extensively in the ODIN thread and you'll see what I mean.
Its always good practice to back everything up and know the step by step procedures before you ever do anything. Good luck!
Connexxions "how to" videos are VERY detailed and shows you step by step how to do just about everything on this phone. I highly recommend them.
don't panic, ur lucky that u can still get into download mode. that is just soft brick I think..

sounds like the bootloader.
flash a froyo rom, then try to odin. AFTER you have tried installing the drivers linked in the previous post. That guide should work.
Did you get this fixed?

Go into the control panel & uninstall the USB drivers & kies mini if installed. Then reinstall Kies Mini & use the menu option to reinstall the drivers. See if that helps.

Could it be the cable you're using? I've seen quite a few posts here about people using cables that were bad and/or too long and it prevented the phone from being recognized via USB. People could charge the phone but not use ODIN or anything.
Do you have a different cable to try?
ive tried two different cables, i could try another one thats a good idea. somehow i think maybe i messed up the mounting, i thought i followed the instructions to a t. UMMU .. i will try a few different cables when i get home tonight... actually just tried at work no dice, my system storage is also only showing 126 MB

I thought the phone did not boot up. How are you seeing how much storage you have left?
I'm curious to know what state it really is in. There has to be a way to get it going for you.
the phone boots fine during the boot after the initial boot screen where it says galaxy s 4g it goes into rainbow patterns. so every time i try to get into recovery when I am in the recovery menu (or into where the recovery menu should be) i cannot see anything because of the rainbow screen. I was told maybe i have the wrong boot loaders installed.
because i cant see recovery and I cannot get my computer to see my phone I have no idea what to do get my phone back to stock to start over.
This is why I am stuck.
If i could get my computer to see the phone I think i could odin back to stock, using the dongle is half the battle as i can get in recovery

Pardon me if I'm not getting it....but yo said it boots fine but then you get the rainbow screen when the Galaxy S 4G logo should appear? The rainbow screen is definitely a boot loader issue. I'm just trying to figure out a way to either get you into a download mode where the phone is recognized or into recovery so you can get it going again.
How are you getting it into recovery mode?
I'm wondering if Heimdall would be your best bet? You could try to download it from here, extract it somewhere, then go into the Drivers folder and double-click zadig.exe. Select Options from the menu bar, select List All Devics then select Samsung Android Composite (something along those lines), then click Install Driver. This is a different driver than the one that comes from Samsung.
After that, maybe try Bhundven's [Heimdall][One-Click][UVKJ6] The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection [12/11/2011]. Select whichever one-click file you want to go for and follow his instructions. They all have the GB bootloaders in them, so you should be set.
Usually both volume buttons power button for a few secs or through rom mgr

From what I've read ROM Manager is a no-no on this model phone. I dunno why, but I've read that on a few threads.
Let me know if you're able to install Heimdall and the open source drivers that come with it. If you can, you can get into download mode, and it sees the phone, then you can try the One Clicks or even just flash the boot loaders from a ROM that contains them.
I will try when i go home tonight.
just an fyi every time i plug in my phone, it does not show up on my computer. i have tried using debugging mode and mass storage and neither work.

Ugh...well let's hope for the best. I would uninstall any drivers and programs like Kies you have installed first, then install the Heimdall drivers. Let me know how it goes.
so i uninstalled drivers executed Heimdall and put phone in download mode with dongle. the computer still did not detect phone, however i got my replacement SGS4 today put it in download mode and it was detected immediately.
I dont know what else I can do do get the phone detected or fix the boot loader to get into recovery

Maybe I'm missing something. How are you switching between debugging mode and mass media if you can't boot the phone?
The way I understood the problem, you would get to the SgS logo screen during boot, then the whole screen would be covered by the rainbow effect, which renders the screen unreadable, nd thus the phone unusable. Is that correct, or is the problem different?
the rainbow screen happens right after the SGS Logo then fades out once the lock screen comes on.
it also shows up once I try to get into recovery but from that point I cannot see anything and have to reboot.
Phone works after fully booted
both debugging and mass storage have been tried
You need to flash the "GINGERBREAD" bootloaders. This issue is 100% caused by froyo bootloaders. Once you obtain the GINGERBREAD bootloader, there is a 100% chance that the issue will go away. Flash THISTHIS/download. in heimdall. Get into recovery, then flash a rom of your choice.

Did I completely mess up my Captivate?

So I been trying to fix my friends Captivate for a few days now.
I posted a video a few days ago. I did get it into download mode with my jig. However everything froze while I used the 1 click captivate heimdall to flash my phone. (It did flash but some things did not work)
Anyhow now My phone has "Phone - ! - PC"
No download mode, the jig sends it back to this screen too. I tried so many button combinations. I really don't want to send my phone in to some website. I was so freakin close...
Please help
My Evo 3D is laughing at me and the captivate.
I pull out my battery and let it discharge for about 15 secs and hold volume buttons then connect USB cable and finally insert battery while still holding volume buttons of course, it'll get you into download mode. Never failed me. I've had my phone not even turn on the screen, it stays dark during a screwed up flash with odin. I then flash UCKI2 with bootloaders and then flash to gingerbread ROM I like. If you plan on installing custom ROMs your phone will semi-brick numerous times. If its showing a phone, exclamation mark and computer with a message saying firmware flashing failed. That is perfect! Just make sure you have Samsung USB drivers and simply flash using odin, it'll show COM and a number like 5 (COM5) then just flash. I'd advise you to remove any external SD card and restart before using odin it acts up. Hope this helps

The "Phone - ! - PC" will be your download mode screen. Just download from there.
However, if a flash goes foul somehow, you may be left with the infamous "phone--/!\--PC" screen.
If you see this, don't panic. Although it's not technically the download mode screen, many users (including myself) have been able to successfully flash from that screen. Give it a try.

100% - I had similar experience with my first flash but after a few goes at it and 3 or 4 "soft-bricks" all has been great!
Well when I plug it in Windows 7 doesn't even detect it anymore. But the phone will go back to that screen when the USB is connected.
Nothing in ODIN/Heimdall pops up...

It seems I got it in download mode this morning with the jig. Just trying to get my damn pc to read it. Sometimes the right drivers work sometimes they don't. ugh
Connection issue in my sig
Any chance you have another pc to try it with? Or possibly another cable?
Going to try one click on ubuntu...
Ive had issues in the past before with certain USB ports on my PC not reading the phone.
Try plunging in your phone to a different USB port and it can make a world of difference with the driver issue (even if you have to plug it in the back of your PC).
try one click unbrick in the android development page

Are you running x64? If so are you running the 64 bit drivers?
I also had the same issue a couple of times, which is technically called a "soft brick" . You could resolve this issue using ODIN flasher and reverting back to stock. Now coming to USB problem in windows, this is a known issue with windows (especially Vista and Win7) and samsung!! The remedy which I found is as follows :-
1.Disconnect the phone from USB
2.Remove samsung USB driver software from your windows PC.
3.Reboot and then navigate to C:\Program Files\ (assuming that C:\ is your windows OS partition)
Delete "samsung" folder.
4.Download latest samsung USB Drivers for captivate and install.
5.Reboot the phone.
6.Open ODIN and connect your Phone to PC.
It should detect the COM Port by now. Try this and get back

Tricky: Optimus One stuck at LG logo

Hey guys,
I got a little problem here and would appreciate any help. As you might have guessed from the title I have an Optimus One here that won't boot. It is stuck on LG logo screen. The phone is not mine but my father-in-law's and I told him I would have a look since his warranty is already void. He told me that he turned it off because it was gettin really slow (and he does that from time to time to clear memory) and as he wanted to turn it on again, it was stuck on LG logo. And has been since. I can still access emergency mode though, but that's it!
Now, I know that there are a lot of threads that treat this problem but in every one of these threads people solve the problem by flashing a stock ROM via KDZ. And that doesn't work for me. It just won't go through with the whole process. I'm flashing in emergency mode and always at some point you hear the sound indicating that a USB device has been unplugged and it starts to boot (I don't know if it is supposed to cause I've never had one of these phones in my hand that was working properly, only this broken one) but obviously gets stuck at LG logo. After a while I get an error from KDZ and thats it.
I also tried with LGMDP, which didn't work either. And obviously I tried a hard-reset, which didn't do anything.
I really don't know what to do with that stupid thing. But I am 100% convinced that it can be revived because emergency mode is still accessable.
Can any of you guys help me? Would be much appreciated!!
Cheers
Hard reset!! again...mb try to flash CWM and wipe data/cache/dalvik
Hard-Reset doesn't work. Just leaves me at the lg logo again. How do you flash CWM? You mean with LGDMP?
tried it, didn't do anything. Thanks for the effort though...
No. KDZ
I`ve broken CWM and killed my O1. And just flash CWM via KDZ and reflesh ROM. It helps me
@ElZeck, when you are flashing with KDZ, what is the error that you get? Also, what is the operating system on your computer? I think I had trouble using KDZ on Windows 7/8, but Windows XP worked just fine. Maybe you might want to try using KDZ on a different computer.
Hey guys, thanks for your replies!
@Kill4File: How do you flash CWM with KDZ? I tried with LGMDP but I wouldn't know what file I would need to do so with KDZ. Can you supply the file?
@sweetnsour: I don't recall the error exactly. I know it ran through parameters until 100 twice and then it got stuck at sth. like wPrm 8. That sound familiar to you? OS is Windows 7.
Just download a recovery like cwm or twrp, then extract the .img file and flash that through lgmdp.
Edit : if you start your phone what happens?

I remember my friend bricking his LG Mytouch, so I tried to help him out with KDZ. I believe you got a similar error (and he was also using Windows 7). I think looking for a different computer to use KDZ on might be the key, especially if you find a Windows XP computer. Basically Windows 7 caused trouble for my friend and me, and Windows 8 wasn't any better. My old XP desktop got the job done though.
This is what I do when I use KDZ (don't miss the words in bold):
1. Manually boot your phone into emergency mode, with emphasis on manually. To do so, hold Back + Vol Up + Power.
2. Plug the cable into the computer first, and then the other end into the phone, in that order. I know some people are used to plugging the cable into the phone first and then into the computer, but sometimes (at least when the phone is normally booted) the computer doesn't detect the phone.
2a. Just making sure, I assume that since your computer at least began the KDZ flash, you already have the drivers for your phone. If you do decide to try it on a different computer, remember to install the drivers (reasons on why I use Windows XP in the next step). Also, don't forget to disable the LGE Modem in Device Manager.
3. Open KDZ. I don't know why KDZ causes issues for me on Windows 7/8, but on those two operating systems, I get some sort of "compatibility issues." Also, KDZ likes to crash in the middle of a flash. Never had any of those issue in Windows XP (no crashes, and I believe KDZ was built for XP anyway since there aren't any compatibility issues).
4. Make sure you have it set to 3GQCT and DIAG. (If KDZ fails to flash, try the different options under PHONEMODE and also try shaking your phone during the flashing process). Browse to your KDZ file.
5. Begin the flashing process. No matter what happens on your phone (it reboots, makes noises, etc) don't remove the cable until KDZ reads "FINISHED".
6. If the phone fails to boot properly (stuck on bootanimation even though it flashed properly), yank the battery, and hold Home + Vol Down + Power. This will begin a hard reset.
If this is what you've been doing on Windows 7 and it still fails, I highly recommend using Windows XP.
Hopefully that helps

Unfortunately, I can't! Only emergency mode is accessable. Anything else (recovery, hard reset,...) leads to LG logo screen.

I had this. I took out the battery, replaced it and then plugged into the USB. Got charging screen. From there, adb reboot recovery, restored a backup, and got back up and running (assume you have a usable backup available).
Here is a way to revive your phone
If you can enter recovery mode, your phone is revibable. You can install CyanogenMod 7 Android 2.3.7.
