I previously used "my calculator"as a way to store private messages. This application would intercept and sms from a contact I delegate and give a special but otherwise unrecognizable notification icon. Is there any way to accomplish this with KitKat even if a special app is needed.

I used to use an app called Vault. It was awesome- completely hidden and the only way to access it was by typing a code on your dialpad. No way for anyone to know it was even installed. Not sure if it works with 4.4 yet but it's worth checking out.
I think there are some core changes in KitKat that need to be addressed

Hello all,
I've decided to ditch Gmail and use the stock mail app. One if my accounts was hacked recently so Google had me add an extra layer of protection that when ever I sign in from another new device (or when I change ROMS) it sends me a verification code in a text message to complete the sign in. Is this what's preventing me from being able to sign into my account using the HTC mail app? Is there a way around it or something I'm missing when trying to set it up.
Thanks,
Mark

You have to go into your Google security settings and get a unique password that you will use for the HTC mail app. You will use the password supplied when you setup the mail app instead of your Google password. You will find it near the bottom of the security screen.

Where are the Google security settings at? I was able to go to Google settings and hit the 3 dots on the to right and one of the options was to get a verification code and it gave me one. I tried to use it as a password without a space in the middle and with but it still says failed.

I am not near a computer right now but you might need to get to the Google security settings via a browser. A verification code will definitely not work. You need to set an app specific password. Try to Google search "two step authentication app specific password" sorry I can't be of more help right now. If I was near a computer I could give you exact steps.

https://www.google.com/settings/security
Then click on settings for app passwords
It will generate a one time use password that will not be shown again after initially generated. You can save it if you wish, but you can generate as many as you wish so there really isn't a need. You can also revoke it at any time.
Thanks to both of you for the help. It worked like a charm.

Glad you got it to work. Too bad Google doesn't make that function a bit more obvious.

after changing some of my ringtones (contacts, alerts etc.), i'd like to start over from scratch.
however, i can't find a default/reset box to check when it concerns ringtones (and not the whole phone's settings).
the reason i want to do it (maybe you'll help me here instead) is that even though i succeeded in setting a specific ringtone per group (in my contacts), i cannot change it or reset it, and now i'm stuck with a ringtone i can't change.
thank you
Go into the your contacts app aka people and for each contact that you made change it back to default

Isn't there a more efficient and 'one-press' way?
I have both contacts and groups ringtones and i'd like to reset them all at once

Yes and no. Factory reset resets all.ringtones and much more. Just ringtones? No

Without rooting my phone is it possible to install the email app. I understand it has themes and you can slide to delete etc. I use exchange and have many contact groups that I bcc to. I have not found a good 3rd party app that can do it. Thanks

Greetings XDA,
O.k. I'm new to Samsung and touchwiz so please forgive me, coming from the HTC One to the Edge. I previously used a few messaging apps going to one for this and another for that, keeping one for private messages an another for this and that... Google voice, go sms or handscent, the stock sms app, and hangouts, now voice and hangouts are kinda merging... however I am finding it annoying to be forced to stick with only one messaging app... it appears that touchwiz will only allow one such app controlling access to send messages.... is there a way to disable the system from forcing me to stick to only one app and locking the other ones?
I'm currently running the below rom
[ROM] Sprint Note Edge SM-915P NK1 Rooted Stock Deodexed
Thanx for any helpful suggestions
Im on stock and it lets me pick between sms/mms apps. Im using the lollipop messaging app from the play store default

Maybe it's just me then...
However try and use another sms/mms app if it's not your currently selected default messaging app, and see if it allows you to send a message from that app without changing it to now become your new default messaging app.

No it makes you switch tha one to default. but thats very easily done in settings. It like hangouts, it is on the edge, but i refuse to use it cuz i hate it for some reason. I d/l' ed "messaging" for lollipop in play store and enabled it as default in settings and im a happy camper

Is there an app that lets a user set up a task for android to do at a certain time. I don't mean like run x app at 10:30 I mean one that will similate as a user would do. For example open x app type xxxxx and than hit ok/send/enter. This isn't for sms as I already use sn automated sms app. I think I'm thinking way over the ability of what an app can do however. If it is possible though id be very happy. Also, is their some sort of sms reply app that when a sms is recived containing a keyword(s) I set it sends a reply that I previously picked?
