So Tuesday I took a couple pics with my s3, then plugged in my usb otg to transfer some pics to that to put onto my ONE, then forgot about it. Last night i picked it up and noticed it was dead, thought that was strange but maybe i left wifi on and didnt give it a full charge before. So I plugged it into that charger last night and forgot about it. Decided wanted to take a couple pics with it today and its dead still. Like totally dead. I put a different battery in and still nothing. Been on the charger fpor a bit, nothing. I get no lights, no vibrate, nothing. Any idea why it would just die like that? Its a replacement from verizon from about August, used until mid september when I got my ONE. Kept my s3 for the camera. Any ideas what the issue is and if its bricked somehow? I was running andys bonestock, havent flashed or touched anything on it in sometime so a bit confused what the issue is.

It's bad luck, there's a whole thread describing this issue. As a general rule you shouldn't plug anything into the phone, but there's no way you Could've known that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33882126
Basically I'd check and see if you can plug it into your pc and see if it'll recognize it at all. Sometimes it'll show up as an unusual drive qusb_dload and that can be fixed. Alternatively, you can plug it into a charger without the battery, if the red light comes on that can be fixed also. If nothing works, you may have shorted the power supply which is a different problem.

Ive been using the on the go usb for a while now transferring pics i take with the s3 to my one and to store photos or other files from my ONE. Never had a problem with it. It is not picked up by my pc at all nor do i get a red light or any light with or without the battery. How do i determine if this is just a power issue and not a brick issue? Im not sure how i could have bricked it just by copying pics from the phone to the otg.
EDIT: So after reading that thread, im thinking this is likely my issue as well. It didnt happen immediately on plugging it in tho cause i was watching some of the files transfer before going back to watching my movie on tv. Is this issue just on the S3? Or should i be worried about this with my ONE as well since i have no sd card in that?

I think you're better off not using it, but I wouldn't know for sure on the one. The power issue would be a much bigger problem then a hard brick because getting parts to fix it might not be worth the cost. Plus you need to find someone who can fix that.
If you're still under warranty just bring it in and get a new one.

My phone wont turn on after installing titanmim backup it was working ok and had about 50% battery left but thenit suddenly went off and now wont turn on.
Can it boot into recovery? What happens when you plug it into a charger and try turn it on?
It wont boot in to recovery mode. Am on my way home now so soon as am in am going to try and plug it in to the charger and see but before I installed titanmim backup it had about 50% battery still in it
Just tuck it out of my pocket and the screen feels warm to the touch
Try it when you get home and see how it goes.
Just got in and plugged it in to the charger and it's not coming on the charger light isn't even coming on
How the PC recognize it in the device manager?
At the moment my pc isn't picking it up
Pull the battery, put it back in, then try to power on.

Tried that tried 2 different battery's and 2 different chargers and 2 different laptops
Did you try and turn the phone on without a battery in? I read somewhere that that may help discharge the final bit of power in the phone, but it's probably bull crap.
So no computer sees it at all? Have you ever run ADB or FASTBOOT commands with your computer? I ask because I want to make sure you have proper drivers installed and everything.
The next thing I would do is start downloading a RUU of your liking. I say that becasue it may come down to trying that out, and the download takes a while. Here's a link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
Any other info you can provide like is it stock, rooted, what ROM, etc. would be helpful.
It rooted and running OrDroid rom from here, It as been running great till tonight when I tried to install titanium back and it just went off with no life in it at all
Sorry to say but it sounds like a lot like what happened to me. My first Sensation just died on me one day. Have a read about it in this thread.

Yeah that is a real shame about the Galaxy 10.1. I have actually been thinking about getting one of those myself. I don't know about the Galaxy 10.1, but my Accer Iconia A500 tablet has a slot for a SD card that has a peice of molded plastic covering the slot. And it is work going on to be able to use it like a phone. Terrible how OEMs lock out a feature like that
Anyway back on topic, if you are interested I can give you contact info to someone that can replace the mainboard for you at a reasonable price. That would be cheaper than buying another device I think. Just PM me if you are interested.
Am in the UK mate
Think ill take my chances and try and sending if off to HTC for repair
Just booked it in now so hopefully they will fix it
Same thing happen to me the other day. It shut off and wouldn't come on. Thankfully I am paying extra for extended warranty which is basically lifetime warranty and got it replaced.

How much did you pay for extended warranty*
Got a email from Htc saying even though my phone is in warranty they want a £145 to fix it put not because of the fault but because at the top of the screen there a little crack and even though I said that's not why its broke they still want me to pay it. So I don't now if its worth paying that much to fix it or count my loss's. Isn't there any other way to fix a bricked phone
I recently flashed CMRex with Kejar's 4.1.1 gapps and was going about setting up my device. I got everything set up how I like with all the apps I wanted downloaded and running how I wanted them. I then ran the v6 supercharger mod that I had used on my past two roms with no problem whatsoever. After finishing the set up of the script, I rebooted my device and all was well. I went to browse on craigslist's mobile app, then I saw something I wanted to google, so I opened my browser. My browser took an ungodly amount of time to load my homepage(google), and wouldn't respond hardly. I couldn't get the touchscreen to respond. My hardware buttons did respond and I got haptic feedback from them, but no response on the screen. Eventually, after numerously pressing the home button, I got a message saying the browser wasn't responding, selected ok to close it, then back to the non-responsiveness of the touch screen and hardware buttons. And then another eventually later, after another multitude of home button presses, I got to my homescreen but everything was laggy. The most lag I have ever encountered with my device since I obtained it, not to mention that my device was beginning to heat up. So, I decided I would power off the device, remove the battery, let it cool down, and then replace the battery before powering it back up. Well, lo and behold, I did just that, went to power back up my device, and there was no sign of life at all. Tried to get into the bootloader, no response. Tried a normal boot, no response. Tried to plug it into the charger to see if it would charge, no response. Well, my girlfriend told me to leave the battery out for a while and leave it alone for a while before trying it again. So, I played some MW3 for about 45 minutes to an hour, repeated all the above, and still no sign of life. Can anyone help me out? (I don't know if this is supposed to go into the Q&A or here, so I just post here.) I'm so distraught at the possibility of losing my phone, that I'm finding it hard to cope at the moment. Should be thinking of ways to gain some money in order to purchase a new device or is there still hope?
what a long message.do you have any point form here?
i hope you solve the problem .
Do you have access to a separate charger? You can try charging your battery there and see if that works. Did you try connecting it to the computer? Maybe that will show some sign of life. Also, how old is your phone and did you over clock?

I did not overclock, I do believe that my clock speeds were at the kernel default, either 100/1k, or 200/1k. Not sure which, but definitely one of those. The only other charger I would have access to would be my mother's HTC charger, but I will try that and connecting it to the computer as well. Well, I'm not exactly sure on the age of the phone because I purchased it off of craigslist, but it's in great condition. Only had a small scuff on the top left corner, but I know that has nothing to do with the age of the hardware. ): Could it possibly be that my battery decided to die for some reason? I've been having horribly battery life lately. Granted, I had horribly battery life when I got the phone, but it's gotten worse and worse since then.
My Nexus S wouldn't start but gave a flash on the screen when the battery was first inserted. Just got it back from repair and it was a motherboard problem. Was looking at a Huawei G300 as a cheap replacement if the repair wasn't covered by warranty (which it was). Good luck!
Thing about it is, I bought the phone off craigslist so I have no idea if its covered by the warranty still. Should I try calling samsung and find out?

Testing the battery can be done differently, do you have a multimeter? Maybe your neighbours have one, it's a common thing. You can measure whether it has any power left. If you measure low voltage (below let's say 3400 mV), then it could be battery related.

If you've got no warranty, perhaps time to buy a new phone? Bought myself a new Galaxy Nexus.
I would like to get a new galaxy nexus, but I have no money to do so. I'm currently trying to get a job and i m going to save up for a new phone. Im either going to get an s3, a galaxy nexus. Either one of those two or the new nexus if it comes out.

I just hard bricked my second GS3. I bricked the first one a couple of months ago (the day I got it) when used a cheap OTG cable to attach a flash drive to the phone. The phone just shut down. No charge light ever, no response to usb, just nothing.
When I got my second phone, I took a deep breath and tried the OTG cable again and it worked fine. I thought I just got a bad phone.
But today, on a whim, I wanted to see if my phone would run an external USB cd drive. BAM, the phone shuts down and is hard bricked again!!
So, I guess this is a cautionary tale, as well a plea to the community for any recommendations. Someone had a similar problem months ago, but I didn't see a resolution. I will probably end up sending it for JTAG repair, but I don't know if it will do any good since this wasn't caused by borking a ROM install. Anybody have any experience with this?
One thing is for sure. That OTG cable is going in the trash.
I have never heard of this. Very interesting. Sorry to hear this for you. I have been using my cable for awhile now and only ever had one problem with it. I was viewing pictures and looked away from the phone for a few moments. Phone went into sleep mode like normal. Dull screen then screen off. Prob was it wouldnt wake up. Nothin i did woke it up so i had to do a battery pull. Phone was fine after that and havent had the problem since. Gonna keep fingers crossed after reading the OP.

I just can't imagine what must be happening. I wish one of those uber-smart hackers who were working on the bootloader unlock would see this and give me some idea if it is even fixable. It is almost like it blew a fuse.
Anyway, I have an email out to mobiletechvideos to see if they think it can be jtag-ed. I have a feeling that a $2 cable is going to end up costing me $600.
----- Update -----
I made and tried a usb jig, just for kicks. No luck. Still waiting to see if mobiletechvideos gets back to me.
Another quick follow-up... I got a response from mobiletechvideos.
Unfortunately that has been damaging many people’s phones. It damages the PMIC and the device is not repairable by any of our services or any other shop that I know of.

If you are too lazy to google PMIC, it is the power management chip. Sounds like there is a problem with the cable where the power is being directed somewhere it shouldn't be.
This weekend, I will carefully cut open the cable and see if I can see the problem.

Since installing ICS i've been having problems with my getting my phone to charge. I'm not sure if this was actually related to ICS or just coincidence. Anyway, the battery had died completely and the phone would not power on. I came across some info that mentioned cutting the end of a usb cord and attaching the red and black to positive and negative of battery. I tried this and sure enough the phone powered right up. Now I decided to do a factory restore using lg mobile support tool.
Sometime during the restore process the phone powered down, I wasn't watching so i'm not sure how far it actually got. When I checked the wires I noticed the red and black from my usb cable had twisted and made contact. Now of course the phone won't power up at all. I believe I probably fried something when the red and black made contact but I'm not sure what or if it's fixable. If anyone has any ideas on what I might be looking for i'm all ears. I'm going to take the phone apart when I get home and see if there are any obvious problems.
I have tested the battery, and it seems to have power, so it's not the battery.
On a side note I really can't wait to get a new phone, this thing has been nothing but a headache for the past 2 years. Hate to say it but, I think it's just about time for an iphone.

I've tried searching but no one seems to have this same issue. Or where I saw people with the same issue, they just stopped responding to suggestions and no resolution was reported. So if anyone can help me I'll definitely post until the end!
It started a couple days ago: my phone kept switching orientations (portrait/landscape) as if I were rotating the phone in my hands, but I wasn't. It would happen if it was being held upright, or even laying down on my desk.
Yesterday into this morning it got really bad. It would switch orientations literally every second. I started backing up as many apps as I could, but that was incredibly hard because the buttons moved every time the orientation rotated.
I was able to boot into recovery and make a data/system backup from there.
During the course of the day today my phone eventually just shut off. Now it will no longer power up. I have tried booting normally, as well as into recovery or download mode, but it responds to nothing. There is no screen flash; there is no vibrate. Absolutely no response.
I have swapped batteries with a friend who has the exact same phone. My battery works fine in his phone. His battery produces the same results in my phone: no response to anything.
When plugged in the phone behaves the same: no charging light, and unresponsive to any combination of button presses.
So... being that I'm rooted and likely out of warranty, is there any way I can fix this myself without going to Verizon?
Thanks a TON in advance to any replies! My fingers are crossed...

I was on AOKP Milestone 2, which I believe was based off of 10.2. I could be wrong, but it was either 10.2 or 10.1.
But this seems like a hardware failure, no? What would the ROM have to do with it? Not to come off as brash; just curious.

Try getting yourself a USB Jig off eBay or something or make one if you're crafty with electronics.
it should get you into download mode and then you can odin back to stock witch will atleast bring you a functioning phone
good luck

Great find. Yeah he definitely has exactly the same symptoms as me. Although he bricked it by flashing things improperly. Mine just started out of nowhere.
Hopefully that makes no difference. I don't think I can wait for a "jig" to arrive. I'll probably try to make one myself. Anyone have one near Minneapolis that I could borrow for a few minutes?
I'll keep you all posted.
Well, good news and bad.
Good news: I made a jig. Bad news: it won't revive my dead phone. I tried the jig in an old S3 with a cracked screen and the jig puts that phone into download mode just fine. But nothing will wake up the other S3.
Could the micro USB port be damaged on my phone? What else could be causing this?

Not sure. It was working for a couple months just fine on that ROM. This feels more like a hardware issue...
Being that the USB Jig didn't work, I'm not sure what options I have left. Anyone know how a JTAG works? Would that be an option?
Or am I just hosed?
it might be a faulty motherboard. its like something wrong with the actual gs3. that or your battery is dead. but if not its definately a hardware issue. try buying a new motherboard to exchange the bad one
