I'm trying to transfer my pictures and videos from my Nexus 4. There is about 8GB. I first transferred them to my laptop and then plugged in the Nexus 5 to transfer them to the new phone.
The phones android.process.media keeps crashing 1/4 of the way through the transfer. Even when I limit it to 100 pics at a time there is still some crashing somewhere. I just can't get a big batch of pics/vids to transfer.
Any idea why?
I get that too. Someone else reported it too. Not sure how to fix it right now though.

In a pinch, you could try sending an entire folder via adb push. If you don't have ADB set up and working yet, there are guides available. I realize the average end-user shouldn't have to do this but it's worth a mention.
For example:
adb push ./bigassphotofolder /sdcard/bigassphotofolder
And then wait... quite a while... until it finishes.
An alternate "cloud solution" if you don't need them all stored locally is to put them in Google+ Photos.
Use Airdroid and wifi instead. Excellent app.

That's a disadvantage yes. Also if you are using a desktop computer with multiple USB ports, make sure you are connected directly to a rear port and not to a hub or a front port. That can make a real speed difference.
Hello
I'm having the same problem trying to transfer files from my Nexus 4 to my Nexus 5.
I'm using adb push and while some folders would transfer without problems, others would simply get stuck halfway. No error message or anything. It's just stops and I have to Ctrl+C and retry and the whole operation.
It's frustrating yesterday I've spent the whole day with this and I still could finish copying the files, so I'm still on my old phone.
Is there anything reliable like adb push but with resume support, or at least that skips existing files?
Thanks.

Thanks. I ended up using SSHDroidPro. Paired with WinSCP I was able to transfer everything over, and finally I'm using my new phone. Up until now I was under the impression that a USB cable was faster than Wi-Fi, and that adb was the most robust way of moving files. I guess I was wrong on both fronts. Oh well, I learned something new
Cheers.
The easiest way to prevent the FCs is to do as follows:
1. When copying audio/video etc, select 'Camera (PTP)' as the connection from the statusbar dropdown.
2. When copying music, select 'Media device (MTP)'
No more FCs.
I just got my nexus last night and I did the same thing as op and was getting the same error. Will try some other things when I get home tonight.

I have the same issue on my Nexus 5 and glad it's not just me. I never had anything like this happen on my Note 2 so it was really weird seeing it happen.
I had to resort to using Airdroid, which is highly annoying because anything over 100 files takes forever to load into the web interface and even has Chrome thinking the tab has crashed when it hasn't. I had to load files 100 at a time onto my Nexus 5.
I hope Google can fix this. Does anyone know if a bug report was filed? Is Google aware of this issue?
Hmm I have around 2500 pictures and 1k songs to transfer...I think I might wait for a better solution

I have almost 2000 wallpapers that I use with a rotation app. Air droid worked for transferring them all as I was having the same issue.

On a related note, I have noticed with past transfers that adb pull does not preserve created/modified date flags, while adb push does. In particular it does this with photos which then confuses the gallery. So often I have had to use Windows copy to dump files without losing the date stamp, and adb push to put everything back en masse.
(Sigh, I do miss the days when this entire process consisted of moving a microSD to the new phone)

Is there a program that can sync my media to the Captivate's internal memory? I can't seem to get Kies to work, Itunes agent is only able to one playlist(or more, but then it just combines the playlist), and windows media player(which doesnt play nice with Itunes).
Right now I'm in the process of setting up songbird, which is capable of syncing to other android phones out of the box, besides that it has addons, based on FF, can import from Itunes, etc. All these features move it to the top of my list, but I just can't get it to work right. Any help?
Edit: I was able to sync pictures with songbird
Double Twist.
http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt
Its like itunes but for everything other than apple products.
and it does conversion on the fly, and a bunch of other awesome things.
This is what I did.
Google "Samsung captivate USB driver download" click on the actual Samsung site, find Samsung captivate on the list and click software and then click on the zip files. Then extract and install them while your Samsung is connected to the USB. Don't unmount or debug it at all. Ok now after the installation is complete restart the computer. After restart, log in and unplug the Samsung and replug it, it should work like what I did. Hopefully it help. If not let me know.

seriously just download double twist.
click the link and watch the video on the front page, and you'll be convinced.
As for synchronization, I just plug em in and drag files into the device, as for music go to window media player and click on sync you can put music thru them. (As my first replied, make sure its on Samsung kie setting.)

I've also tried doubletwist, can't get that to work either, which makes me wonder whether I have the right drivers installed. Is there a way to delete all traces of the captivate from my computer and start from scratch? I use revo uninstaller but that on gets ride of Kies( i suppose).

Did you do this on x86 or x64? Win7 x64 users always seem to be having trouble with programs. "Don't unmount or debug it at all." So both USB Mass storage and debugging were off?

I never heard there's x84 , but I know it happens to some users with window 7, x32 and x64. So I have 64bits and yeah set the Samsung as Samsung kie, turn off debug. Just go back to where it was first set when you got them.

Ok, So I completely removed everything Samsung, song, double twist, kies from my computer.
I'm going to try again...When I first connect it, should the mass storage be on or off? and in what mode should the phone be?(Kies, mass storage, PC internet, or media player?)
I'm using a HTC Desire, personally I've tried using DoubleTwist and found it ultra ultra slow. It seems to take forever ( hours ) to perform the synchronization between my itunes library (~30+gb worth of files) and phone (~7 gb).
Currently trying out Songbird, which seems to be much much faster. But I'm getting problems where the sync is incomplete and only maybe 3 out of 50 songs in a playlist actually gets transferred over. Bizarre.
Waiting to try out HTC Sync with iTunes.
Still hoping for some decent two-way sync like what I used to enjoy on my iPod.
Any idea how to do this on Ubuntu 10.04? I dual booted with Windows XP for my iPhone for 2 years and it sucked. I'd love to have my Captivate syncing with Ubuntu. Maybe Songbird? Rhythmbox? Thanks for the help.
OK, have it set as "Samsung kies", turn off the debugging. Then since you have the software installed, plug them in. And hey I send you private message hope you got it.

I did exactly what you told me and it still didnt work. I think that im just going to use WMP, if I ever get it to see my phone
Oi. Lets see if this work the way I list.
(Before doing so, reset your phone as default or turn off the debugging, don't even unmount the storage. Have it set as Samsung Kies.)
I. Plug in your Samsung captivate, and let the window complete the search for MTP application drivers. It will say fail.
II. Since I can't post links here due to security from XDA. Try to bear with me a moment. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=01010100&prd_mdl_cd=SGH-I897ZKAATT&prd_mdl_name=SGH-I897&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P (this should get you to the zip file)
III. Download it. Before extracting, create a new folder name Samsung captivateband drag that, zip file into the folder you just created. Then extract inside the folder.
IV. click where you see says install. You will be expecting 3 security pop ups requesting your permission. Proceed all 3.
V. You're all set and let the USB search device do their work. Those 2 things will fail tho. So after both says fail. Unplug your device and replug it.
Those step should work since I did it repeatly.

ACTUALLY FUNCTIONAL. Thanks to lws803 for OWNER OF ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS + me for instruction edits to make it work. NOTHANKS to KarateExplosion6 for giving NO CREDIT to us and copying thread exactly. His isn't as functional
These instructions work for both CDMA HERO from SPRINT and the HTC DROID ERIS from VERIZON
INSTRUCTIONS
1. FIRST BEFORE ANYTHING make sure you make this path/folder on your sdcard /media/Music and place all your music there or music will NOT sync. Delete Your original music app if running a non-Sense based rom.
1.5. Download the music apk here. -----> http://www.mediafire.com/?j73zh5ld7bpcbqn
2. Open the apk using Root Explorer from your phone or from your computer with winrar
3. Open the lib folder and the 'armeabi-v7a' folder and extract 'libjumper.so' to root of sdcard. If on computer put it to your desktop
4. If you used a computer connect your phone to your computer and copy the 'libjumper.so' and the music.apk file to the root of your sd card
5. Using root explorer, go to your sd card and copy the 'libjumper.so' file and paste it in your phone system/lib
6. rename your honeycomb music apk into 'Music.apk' and make sure its in the root of your sdcard
7. close root explorer and go to terminal emulator(available on Market)
8.then type
su
[enter]
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
[enter]
cp /sdcard/Music.apk /system/app
[enter]
9. Then go to root explorer again and into system>app and long press on Music.apk.
10. select permissions and make sure the check boxes have a inverted (upside down) L shaped pattern
11. close your root explorer and reboot your phone
12. You should see a bown coloured music icon on your phone's app list enjoy!
13. eMaN edit: To initiate sync go to Setting, Accounts & Sync , click on your google account and there will be options you can check and check music
14. Go to your apps and open Jumpertest app(has the music icon) then click on acounts tab, choose your gmail account, next go to the tab that has start peer, stop peer, and import media.
15. (HOW CLOUD WORKS) Ok this is the important step to initiate sync. Once following step 14 on that tab click start peer and wait 5 seconds. Next click import media and wait 5 seconds and the sync should initiate and BOOM there you have it sync may take several hours if you have a lot of music.
Also make sure in the music app u hit menu/library something/ and only stream
Make sure you tell your buddies and pals about this.
I'll try this soon, I actually wanted this for a week or so.
Looks like I'll need to nandroid first though.
EDIT: Wait, it really needs Root Explorer? Darn, I guess I finally have to break down and get it.

im trying this now. how do I know if its syncing?
also, will i not be able to access the music files on my sd?
I couldnt find them in my music app.
[EDIT] Nevermind, I think ive got it syncing now.
I followed the steps, synced a couple of songs, deleted them from my sdcard, after that they still showed up when i pressed "only streamed" but when i try to play them it "buffers" for 2 seconds and then says "Sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file." All files are mp3s.
I have no idea why but it works for me using an Eris and this one Guy with a sprint phone. Its 5am ill look into it laterz
I tried this on CSouth Hero and it installed fine and I believe it is syncing as we speak.
Question: Does it have to completely complete syncing before music begins to show up? I'll found out soon anyways since I didn't have much music on here.
Installed fine, synced well. Thanks!!!
Guys, it's NOT syncing in the sense that it is actually uploading music to the cloud at this time. Anyone telling you different is lying. It is simulating syncing, but not actually doing it; it is syncing file indexes...that's why the titles appear even if you remove the sd card but get the error saying "cannot play this type of file".
REPEAT: it is NOT uploading to cloud yet. Don't believe anyone who says they've got it working. It's a load.
Obv., it's nigh and will be happening soon. But not yet.
I'm finding step 10 a little confusing.
Mind clearing that up a bit?
EDIT: Never mind, got it to work. Thanks.
Hello,
You may want to make it clear to all users that the permissions for both Music.apk and libjumper.so need to be set to R,W,-,R,-,-,R,-,-. Also all steps can be completed using Root Explorer without the need to use Terminal Emulator. I seemed to have the same results doing it both ways. This is a great music program but since it was designed for a tablet there seems to be issues playing music in portrait mode at least with my phone running 2.3.3. I do have a tablet but it is only running 2.1, has there been a mod released to allow this application to run in 2.1?
Cheers

Connected the Xoom 2, to a windows 7 machine.
Insists on letting installing 'Motocast' which I let it...what a complete pile of shi*.
I want to 'sync' a 700MB .avi video, over usb cable, to the device...estimated time? 30 minutes!!! I swear this complete toss of software is insisting to re-encode the entire file to some bullsh*t format of their choice. Is there an option to turn this off and transfer it natively?
Secondly, thankfully, it also installs native 'portable' device drivers, allowing Windows 7 file explorer to browse the device. Great, so I copy the same .avi file and paste it to the device...'Do you want to copy xyz.avi? Your device might not be able to play this file' I am prompted...'yes' I click. Just as it finishes copying (after about 4 minutes...much better) it bombs out, notifying me that because the device cannot play this file it is cancelling the transfer...wtf?!?!
The only interim solution i've found is renaming the extension '.avi' to something like '.proprietrysoftwarecansuckmyballs', copying it, then renaming it back to '.avi' once transfer has completed solves this.
So can anyone offer any 'clean' solutions to my file transfer woes? If theres no improvement, this device will be getting returned next week, which is a shame as the tablet is a great bit of kit, its just a shame the software blows.
Look for "Wi-Fi File Explorer" in the market.
This looks like it only transfers over wifi?
I need to transfer over usb cable.
Had this problem myself, looks like it doesn't come with the drivers. After a bit of searching, I found that the standard driver package works:

Installed that, unplug the USB cable and put it back in - should work fine!

Hey thanks man, that worked a treat.
Just for clarification, does you still prompt you that the device may not support playback of the file, but then successfully transfer it (whereby it would previously error at the last second)?

Off topic about xoom 2 ME . How good the screen and and the battery life are ?
Useless tablet ?
In fact it's worst!
As a Linux User I hoped being able to use MTP... But I tried mtpfs and mtp-tools on several distributions without any luck.
But what is worse is that FTP server applications won't work too! I tried SwiFTP, FTPServer, and some other: the servers are not reachable. It appears that not even a single ping can reach the tablet. I think Motorala have put some kind of firewall in it (maybe it has something to do with the netflix HD certification?).
For me this tablet is actually useless. If I can't find a way to transfer some files on it without using MotoCast today or tomorrow, I will bring it back to the supplier...

You probably hit it on the head about the Netflix certification. I would think about returning it, man.
a solution ?
Thanks to a French forum (frandroid, in the Xoom 2 topic... sorry I can't send links here), I tested a solution to the transfer problem: It is possible to use (on the computer) a server to share the files such as a samba server.
It works fine. But it's not as easy to browse, select, copy and paste file with explorers on the tablet than it is on computers (several windows, keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-c/v, and so on).
But it's now possible to exchange files with the Xoom 2ME without going through a cloud or using Windows/motoCast.

Sorry for answering so late.
The screen is quite good.
The battery life is terrible compared to my ipad2. Charging needs a lot of time and is very slow. I guess it's because of mini usb only.
Currently i'am using the device as a Kindle Fire replacement, because off the lightweight (KF is heavier and bulky). The books i usually read have more weight than the device itself.
I like it for that.
But i may not be a good adviser because my device is a prototype. It is not smooth and the speakers are terrible.
I think 8,2" is the perfect size for me. The weight is so much better than any other tablet i had.

I've seen a post somewhere here about having multiple copies of folders and files in the phone's internal storage, but I'm not able find it any more. Every time I move a ROM in my phone's internal storage, then CWM it, I always notice that the ZIP has a "clone" with the same size as the original; however, it is not a ZIP file: it just says "File". This applies to ALL the files in each folder, including music and video files. Can someone give me insight and enlighten of this problem?
Additionally, would I be able to rid of all these extra files, or would it make my originals unusable?
I've not seen it myself. But i think the extra files are just "ghost" versions and are not really there. But i could be wrong.
Do me a favor and try putting the sd card in a computer and see if the extra files are there. Could you also upload a screen shot of the issue. I've been trying to track this one down for a while.

few more questions for ya
are you connected using UTP or MTP (does it show up like a USB thumb Drive on your computer, or does it say its a "media Device"?)
also, have you tried copying the files over to your desktop and seeing if they work when one is deleted?

AHA it's cool. I just want to know how to fix this slight problem cuz it's bothering me every time I move a new ROM into my phone! AND It's connected as a Media Device.
I'll try copying some files to my desktop now
YOO! OMG the extra files aren't there any more! I am certain now that this is a problem with AOKP ROMS, including the new Genesis! This make sense because I've never encountered this problem until I got addicted to AOKP since it's first ics release for the G2X. I can't confirm for other ROMS, however, except Hellfire Sandwich 1.6, because I'm currently using it right now.

Hey, long time XDA fan... short time account cred loser :crying:
Anyway just got the Note, and I'm liking it,but I got it for office use.
What is the best way/app to allow me to autosynch files when I export a note and connect my note via the cable?
The notes will contain highly sensitive data, so that removes the option for Cloud solutions unless you know that auto encrypts before synching.
Thanks, in advance!
Bumping for hope of an answer. This is becoming more important to my long term ownership as my workplace is looking to deploy new MDM and policy control around byod devices.

Why don't you try something like Microsoft onenote but im not sure you can sync that without the cloud. If you don't really want to edit the notes you sync u can always save them as pdf's and copy them by usb cable

The best way to sync your tablet with something like Dropbox is an app called DropSync. I recommend getting the paid version as it is far more powerful.
Unfortunately, Samsung chose a format for their Notes app that is unreadable by anything outside of another device running the same Notes app. Why they chose this obscure standard I don't know.

I'm also very satisfied with Dropsync, but also very happy with SugarSync witch has better Win app and better folder setting. You can use my referral to get 500MB more.

What about Kies? I haven't tried it yet, in fact I'm just now downloading it hoping to accomplish the same thing... even so, my use doesn't require such high standards for security. I'm hoping this can make a direct connection with my PC a lot more efficient in order to track order forms and job notifications without needing to print paper.
Hope this suggestion gives you something to work with.
:::Not sure, but thus far it seems like Kies just stores a back-up/recovery file to your computer. Not sure this is helpful but I'm still trying it out:::
Thanks for all the help. This will give me a few things to try.

The best way to sync in the office using the USB cable is with an app and computer software called "Local Sync". Sorry can't post links, but just search the goole play store.
It allows one to sync files from your Note 10.1 to your office computer w/o having to put files in the cloud. I have found it to be completely secure and reliable since its syncs over the USB cable not wireless.
You will need to also download and install the Windows program to run it. You will also need to intall the samsung drivers which means installing Samsung Kies onto your office computer.
With this app and computer software all my critical files between work and tablet are perfectly in sync.
Good luck

OTG sync or file transfers seems to be a hassel. Can't you just use a card reader(SD, micro SD, M2, etc) to connect to your pc and and transfer files via the microSD Card. . No cables needed. Installing Kies means installing versions of Net Framework if you don't have it already installed. Real PIA to install AND uninstall. Isn't it a good idea to use the card reader for large files (under 4 GB)makes sense to me. Plus, you can take the card reader with you on when your away to transfer photos/files from your camera, cellphone, etc to the Note 10.1. Takes less battery power than OTA, correct?
