Purchasing N5 off Ebay/Craigslist? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I'm fully aware of the inflated cost and won't oblige, but if I found one on a site that was very close in price, what are the drawbacks? Is there a difference with warranty since it wasn't purchased on my account?

No.

Extended Warranties/Insurances

I've been researching different warranties and insurances and mainly looking at now at Ensquared and NegriCare. Both offer regular warranty against defects, and accidental damage. They both also cover lost and stolen. I haven't seen that many reviews or threads about these two, does anyone have any experience in these two companies?
I have no experience with either of these, but are these cheaper than the VZW sanctioned one? I guess what I'm getting at is why bother- if you want insurance just buy the VZW sanctioned version, that way at least you can give verizon crap if you have warranty issues. Just one man's humble opinion...

Verizon gives zero support on the insurance they hock. The insurance is provided by Assurion, if you file a claim you won't spend a second dealing with Verizon. Assurion is a horrible company completely devoid of any integrity. I know several people who have worked in their corporate FP&A, and after speaking about the company with insiders, it would be impossible for me to think less of the organization. If your choice is between burning your money and giving it to Assurion, find a match.
Ensquared is backed by Global Warranty Group... I have them and let me tell ya.. claim filed on 8-17 phone recieved on 8-22 however... I had the 32gb insured and they sent me a brand new in box 16gb... now I'm awaiting a shipment of the actual 32gb... but all in all they are a bbb a+ company .. I am not affiliated with them in any way.. but I am documenting my whole ordeal with them through way of recorded phone calls as well as vlogging my experiences.. I'll update this post with the links once it is all resolved.. but as I stated I got my phone within the allotted time they processed the claim

As long as you don't lose your phones, and more accident-proned, the Best Buy Geek Squad Protection is probably the best bet, albeit only if you bought the device from them.
No deductible--unlimited claims.

I'd have to agree with this. Now I do work for best buy but even if I didn't I would recommend it. It covers everything but lost or stolen and you can do 9.99 a month or 180 for a full 2 years. Even though I have this on my phone I also have Verizons TEP just in case my phone gets stolen or lost because that has happened to me in the past.
have you looked into a rider on you homeowners (if its offered) no questions asked cash payout (for the amount you insured the phone for) only $30 per year for a $600.00 policy from Farm Bureau

Cheaper since its a fixed amount to pay up front and a low deductible while VZW you go through Assurion, monthly payments and a high deductible.

Their coverage seems to be limited at $600, which I don't think it will cover my phone since I bought the 32GB version that retails at $650.
I remember back when I got my iPhone on here I was trying to get insurance I saw these guys http://www.gocare.com/cell-phone-protection/ I didn't look into them much but I saw some good reviews

Doesnt sound all that great. You can get something like global warranty group that has been mentioned for 119.99 or less for 2 years of coverage with $75 deductables that will cover you for lost, stolen, or damaged. If anyone is interested in picking it up I am a dealer for them in Delaware and will provide discounts to anyone who contacts me through the site. $107 to insure your phone for 2 years against everything can't be beat.
Bought my phone via Walmart and bought their insurance. The policy seemed pretty solid. I guess I really can't judge it one way or the other until an issue arises.

Well with best buy there is no deductible
If you buy the two year plan from best buy, it seems to be about the same price as it is from Assurion. I guess it comes down to would you rather have no deductible, or peace of mind if you were to ever lose it or have it get stolen.

I didn't mention how its recognized, I was referencing the fact that someone mentioned it earlier in the thread. We offer it as a cheaper alternative to Asurion. Rarely do we get complaints about them, many more complaints about Asurion.

Is it possible to use a Google-disabled nexus?

My dad's going to India to visit family, and a cousin asked to see if I could find someone selling a used Nexus 4. Or something that had a bad ESN but was unlocked, so that he could still use it in India.
During my search, I came across an ad on Craigslist..where a guy is selling a Nexus 5...says it's unlocked and will not work here but will work elsewhere in the world.
So I asked him if it had a bad esn, and he said No, it's disabled by Google.
I use an iPhone and I'm not sure what that means...I did a lot of searching and came across this site.
And the only place I saw "disabled nexus" being referred to, was with people who had their nexus phones stolen during delivery...and Google then disabled the phone and refunded the money.
So, I'm faced with a moral dilemma that the phone could have been stolen OR the guy himself lied to Google about it and got a refund and is now trying to make some money.
But the price is good...and I'd really like to buy it.
So..my question is... Will a new unlocked Nexus 5 that has been disabled/deactivated by Google, work in India?
Or would the deactivation be worldwide? Because no point getting a good price, if the phone won't work!
I really don't know where to turn to.
I'd appreciate the help.
thanks.
The point of disabling a device is making it useless. Why would it work anywhere? What's the price? The price on a brand new one is already low enough, how low can this be? If it's too good to be true, it is.

The reason I posted that question..was because I don't know what "disabled" means. At first I thought, it meant like having a bad esn.
But if it means turning the phone into a brick that won't start or operate, then that's that.
The price is $300 for a 32gb Nexus.

No, that doesn`t matter. It would be best to have this thread closed imo as this is not the place to discuss on how to get `hot` devices operable. Thread reported!

[Q] Warranty on a Nexus 5 from Ebay

Technically, the warranty is not by Google - it is by LG. Google will handle returns/replacements within the first 15 days.
According to LG, the warranty is for 12 months for the original purchaser.

Sorry - can't say because I haven't tried it. I suspect it will be ok if you have original receipt since all LG would really care about is the purchase date to figure out whether it is still under warranty or not, but I don't know if they will check purchaser name as well. You could check with Google/LG to be sure, but I'm pretty sure they will give you the legal answer
Just out of curiosity, why are you buying from ebay instead of the play store? Is it significantly cheaper there? I just glanced thru' some of the postings there and they all seem to be selling over $400 (buy it now)

The price in the Play Store is almost 450, with taxes and shipping, and there are options for less than that.
Moreover, I am having trouble ordering from the Play Store as I am not a resident of the USA, and only sending it to a person there. I know that the ebay order will get there, unlike the Play Store order which is still pending and can be dropped at any moment.

High resale price - why?

I just observed used Nexus 5 being sold for about $35 less than new within countries which have plenty of stock. Is this the "one born every minute" or something else?
example of used $350
and example of new $385
With OnePlus out in a few weeks for $349 plus unknown on tax and postage, and a few other low-priced unlocked handsets out there, I'm puzzled why Nexus 5 is holding its used price, and its coming under attack on its new price.
Because it's a great phone. Oneplus one may be too big for some. Plus it's a true developers phone. No one knows what the oneplus one sources / blobs for drivers will be like...

But that wasn't my question, i don't understand why someone would buy used for 90% of new? It's not like stock is hard to get new.

90% is cheaper than 100%. Not everyone is as fortunate as you to be able to pay 100%
"but it's only $35"
Someone could feed themselves for a week on that. Don't make the mistake of confusing being frugal with being dumb, or that everyone is the same as you

If they're starving they can do with a cheaper Nexus 4 for months.
Warranty is part of frugality, if my new N5 breaks I got some postage costs probably, but I'm less exposed financially than I am with used.
Well luckily for them, it's not your decision what they do with their money
Some people don't care about warranty. Some people know how to use warranty. It's not a problem for them, it's not a problem for you so don't worry yourself about people being "dumb". If you're asking "why isn't everyone like me?", well that's a philosophical question, probably better angled towards facebook

Because the phone is worth a lot more than $350 to most people. Similar phones cost $700 and the Oneplus isn't even being sold really.
Also countries that don't have the Play Store devices, their only choice is to buy them second hand and they are willing to pay as much as the retail cost.
One word answer: demand.

Those living in other countries buy our used phones. $350 for a used N5 is still half the price they would pay for a new phone in their country.
Anyone living in North America can buy the phone for $350 new and have no incentive to buy it used for that price.

What makes you think people in the US are buying them used for more than they cost new? I would just assume they are all out of seas, but there is no real way of telling. Or is there?
If they are, they must not realize they can buy it new for the same price from Google. Or perhaps they are attempting a scam of some sort.

Even in the USA, sometimes it takes a while to get. And beyond that, it's still cheaper than any other alternatives, and some people prefer it to be cheaper. If it's 10% cheaper than retail, then that's still 10% they save.

Where to buy?!

Hi guys! I did not know where to ask this question, so I turned on here may be some of you have an experience. I am planning to buy a Nexus 5 to replace my Nexus 4. Tis should be a pretty cheap phone now since 2 years has passed from its release. I live in Canada and I was planning to buy one from ebay. They ship from Hong Kong and looks like it is new. For example this one:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-Google-Ne...319349?hash=item3396062d75:g:kB0AAOSw3ydVyHn4
Now my question is am I going to be charged with extra fees (like duty and taxes)? Anybody has any experience buying new phones from ebay shipped from china?
P.S. I am open to any suggestion for a new phone!
P.S.2. Sorry if the question is not really related to the forum, I just did not have anywhere else to ask it.
that ebay posting is over priced. you can get a 32 gb for cheaper than that now. my advice is keep looking on ebay, slickdeals, adnroid central, swappa for a good deal.
and you'll find one in no time.
Thanks drago10029! I will. Still do you know if I am going to be charged if I buy a new item from ebay (or any other site)?

I just bought a red 32gb from expansys. Will be delivered tomorrow. I'll post back about if it's in a factory box or anything else. I hope they're not trying to pass off refurbs as new.
I hope so. With the Canadian currency though, I think it is expensive for me. And i am not sure if they ship to canada. And if they do they would probably charge for taxes and other fees too!
