Hi, i just got my Nexus 5 and was very satisfied with it until i played some mp3´s and videos on it.
The speaker is very bad at my device, it croaks even on low volume.
Is my speaker defective or has the Nexus 5 really such a bad speaker?
I think it's just a bad speaker. I'm considering selling mine because of it. It's not loud at all. Plus if you go over 80% it sounds awful.

And by bad I didn't mean defective. I meant that it just sucks.

Give it time. My Galaxy Nexus was horrible to. Once some custom roms come out and great kernels the speaker will be great. Give it time. Dont risk getting another one and that other might have a dead pixel.
Not defective IMO, speaker is not "crappy", but worse than e.g the HTC One etc.... It is OK - for it`s price...nothing more and nothing less... and YES, it sounds muffled and that`s normal...
It's hard to describe but it definitely sounds wrong, it sounds scratchy, even on low volume. It sounds a little bit like a metal piece that vibrates if you put it on your hifi speaker.

Yes, they do.
:S
What do you want to know? No ear is he same as another, so my perception of the speaker qulaity-wise would probably be useless to you (as my hearing is probably either better or worse than yours). Volume to me is OK, and if you'd red up on a few reviews, you'd have noticed they are generally favorable s to the definition and volume of the onboard speaker.

It's just that the placement is god-awful and there's only one lol. I can live with that though...

Being that it is a single speaker and rear facing, I wanted to know if it was loud enough to hear Skype conversations with it. I had TF Prime when they first came out and an assuming that the speaker is the same?

Thanks for your reply.
Petty sure the leaked manual showed dual speakers for the N5 whereas the official spec on Google just states "built in speaker".
So, single speaker with dual grills like the iPhone or dual / stereo speakers?
Anyone know for sure? Really hoping the audio is better this time around.
Edit: it's mono
It seems the left grill is the speaker and the right is the microphone.
Sucks ass I was so hoping for stereo, was one of the main reasons of upgrading from N4 .
It also doesnt sound that good! seems very echoey and I have no idea why >.<. Any clues whats wrong with it? at the moment mine actually sounds worse than the N4 lol.
they did the same thing with the g2....
looks like there is 2 speakers as there are 2 grills but actually only one speaker and the other hides the mic
---------- Post added at 06:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:40 PM ----------
poor quality also it seems
Lets hope 'viper' can be used on this as this made a great improvement on my g2

You have the phone already?
Yeah its odd how they're both identical in terms of looks but only 1 is speaker
just tried an mp3 from Amazon which plays at full bit rate, quality of speaker is reasonably loud but very tinny sadly
Yeah I have the phone already, have had it since 12pm . Must admit that's the only thing really that I can fault on it but I still love it oh and the yellow tinge present however I believe either calibrating the display myself or its something that will go on its own I hope
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
edit: Yellow tinge is simply the display being warmer, I should have checked against my main desktop displays but instead compared it side by side to the Nexus 4 on 4.3 calibrations which the more I look at looks very cool i.e too much blue hence the white looks whiter but a bit too much, the N5 is just slightly warmer than the perfect display however it is actually really damn good and I would only reduce the temp by a very small percent to just get that hint of warmth down.
Display is better than the Nexus 4 calibrated, period.

Wow :0 I got my tracking code at midnight but its still not active just yet. Where you live? Where it ship from, Kentucky?
Sad to hear about the crappy speaker quality. One of the main reason I returned my G2, looks like the Nexus 5 might be using the same speaker setup.
It was literally the worst sounding (tinny, low volume) speaker I've ever heard on a smartphone. My Note 3 is equally tinny, but at least it's loud. =)
Oh well...

iphone 5s does the same thing. I think nokia or HTC are the only ones who actually care about sound
It is louder than the n4 at least . I'm in England and I got it through car phone warehouse it was quicker and cheaper to get via cpw they even shipped it via DPD next day
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Collected mine from cpw store at 9.30 this morning
Only thing I'm not liking at the moment is the poor speaker and the sharp edges to the volume buttons.

sound levels seem very low to me off the loudspeaker, especially for movies that i have downloaded and put on it

Your phone has a yellow tint on the screen? thats the ONE PROBLEM i pray my phone dosent have. How bad is it? =/
I am disappointed with speaker sound quality also. However sound quality using headphones is very good.

Not liking that the speaker is poor. Really hoped they would have learned from the N4 as that and the poor camera were the reasons I passed.
Seems the only thing they have learned is that placing the speaker on the rear is a bad move. No thought seems to have gone into the quality of the sound produced.
Wish it had surround sound like my n7.2 but oh well

Just something as good as the N95 / 5800 (hard to beat) and even the iPhone which also has only one speaker would be sufficient. I can understand the need to keep costs down but surely the speaker components can't be that dear.
A crappy speaker spoils the user experience for me as I rarely use headphones.

Hey guys this is one thing I'm extremely curious about, anyone able to review how the sound is on this?
Nexus 4 was horrible because of the low volume problem playing through aux cables in the car, my galaxy nexus was way better, just curious to how the sound is on the nexus 5
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The actual speaker loudness its self... For me its not very loud!
I have played it though aux in a car and its fine

It seems nice and loud to me. I'm using headphones and Bluetooth with mine though.

Another question for the owners who tried the phone in their cars (AUX) how is the sound quality? since in the N4 the sound quality via the AUX was crap (no other word to describe it) :good:
I thought it was pretty good. Nice quality and loud

Well playing via A2DP is really good. Just like my S3 if not better due to the bitpool being correct.
Playing via headphones also seem to be fine. Not as good as the S3 for me but once a kernel is out with some decent DAC settings i cant really compare.
Yes the speaker quality is CRAP. Not very loud and also tinny. With some sound mods it will be better i can only hope.
Not talking about speakers, about quality through the headphones /aux!

Can somebody else confirm that the speaker is crap? Is it better or worse than the N4? The one thing I miss about the iPhone is the external speaker, in terms of volume. I could, with the 4s, put it in my pocket and hear the music without a problem. That wasn't the case with the N4.

Considering it deals with sound quality, no. If you don't like it then start another thread or quit *****ing.

Seems that the speaker is a turd. HTC One was superior in this sense...even when ringing and getting notifications.
I played through Bluetooth today and it sounds absolutely stunningly perfect.

I affirm it again speaker is crap, probably barely good enough for ringing and calls. Tried to play some dubstep from YouTube and at 50% volume it was far from loud and already starting to saturate. And I'm not a kid that wants to blow is hears off.

I've been trying the speakers out and I gotta say, they're really bad. My dad's super old iphone 4s speaker volume was louder then my n5 speaker when i had it on full blast and he was about 5 feet away. I played youtube music videos on them as well and they sound like ****. Headphones sound fine though.
Hi
Just bought a mate 7 and absolutely love it. One issue though. It rattles when shaken, as if something loose inside. Sound comes from the top ear speaker area. Any one else notice this??

I test it and I have that noise but it.s not loud, i must take the phone near the ear to hear it. I think it's normal.
Me too. Don't know what it is...
Good to know it's not just me. Must me normal then
Me too, but it is the first time I Have heard it...you really need to have your ear close..
Sounds like it comes from the upper part of the phone around the camera..
Don't think its the camera lens...sound more like a metal part moving about...I notice it when receiving or making calls. Bothered me a lot initially, but I'm over it..
Its the camera lens, it is fairly common and normal.
No need to worry, rattling occures cos of how the camera is built.
I have the same noise on my mate 7, i was worried at first but now i kinda dont care to be honest it works, and i have no problems for almost 3 months now.
I have the same thing, but its really really hard to hear... Even in a quiet room. Don't think it's a problem.
I only want the best, so give me what I want! BMW!!!

As long as you are not trying to use the phone as an maracas it is no problem.
I got this nexus 5 about 5 days ago and I recently noticed that when the screen is on there is a very quiet but definitely present noise coming from the bottom of the phone. At first I was worried that there was something very wrong but it's so unnoticeable that I'm actually starting to think its normal. I can't even hear it if the phone is in my hand, I have to bring the bottom right to my ear to make it out. Another reason I think it could be normal is because everything else on the phone works fine. I know there are some other threads about this but none of them seem the have a real conclusion. So can anyone tell me if they experience this too, and is it normal or should I be worried? It really doesn't affect my experience that much because I can't even hear it unless I really try.
The video of the problem doesn't work.
