Screen protector - yay or nay? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

And why?

I used screen protectors on my GT-I9100 but I removed it after a year of use. I didn't use them on my RAZR HD and I will not use any kind of screen protectors on my Nexus 5 except a case from time to time if I need to do something dirty :good:

Not easily scratched.
The screen protector takes away from the beautiful viewing of the screen and (I don't care what anyone says) lessens the touch screen responsiveness.
I had a screen protector on my HD2 for a while, and have not been happier since removing it. And I've had Invisibleshield, BodyGuardz and BSG. They all lessen the experience. Since removing the screen protector on my HD2, I have not had a single scratch. And that's after 3 months or less with the screen protector on and 9 months or more with it off.
And what the HD2 has is not as good as what the Sensation will have in Gorilla Glass.
Don't use lame screen protectors man...
I used them on my HD2 like Darnell_Chat_TN for like 3months. Now almost 8 months later I still have 0 scratches on my naked HD2. You just need to look out if you put it in your pocket with keys etc.
I've got a Thunderbolt which is said to have gorilla glass, but some users are still reporting the glass to be getting scratched. There are some very clear screen protectors which you wont even notice on. I recommend you place a screen protector on. Realook is what I've got on mine.
Well I never knew it, but the HTC HD2 does have Gorilla Glass. No wonder the screen is so strong.
No screen protector for me and loving it . Now I know I won't use one on the Sensation after seeing the difference with my HD2!
I think the screen protector on my G2x is one reason I didn't see the brilliance of the IPS/LED screen as much as it was hyped. Had one on my Nexus One before I had the screen replaced for the first time (dust, still a problem).
My wife's Nexus One has endured a LOT of purse-abuse and doesn't really show it. It's amazing how people can scratch these modern screens in daily use.
look in this thread at the screen protectors link. i couldnt link directly as i dont have enough posts.

I am one of the people who likes to be extra careful. Besides, I've seen various types of damage inflicted on the supposedly scratchproof Gorilla Glass, and I just don't buy into the claims made by the company. More durable than conventional glass? Sure it is. Indestructible? Definitely not.
I'll definitely be slapping a screen protector on my Sensation.
+1 for a protector. I am over protective of my devices and it shows. I take the case and screen screen protector off and it's practically brand new.
I take such good care of my stuff that I have a regular clientele of friends and family who buy my old phones off me, because they tell me it's like buying the phone new.
Shouldn't be calling people lame for wanting to protect their stuff. Not everyone on these forums upgrades their phone every 6 months.
Has anyone got a screen protector on their Sensation? I'm just wondering if the bevelled screen effects it.
I use the Boxwave ClearTouch Crystal screen protector on my HD2. I tried about 4 other brands and the Boxwave works best for me. Screen is almost as vibrant with the screen protector as it is without one and the touch sensitivity is fine. It also seemed to be easier to install than the other protectors I tried.

I had my nexus one for a year without a screen protector as well and no scratches what so ever. I used my wifes phone that has a screen protector and I don't like it at all. So no screen protectors for me for this one.
I can't wait for this phone to be released!
Gorilla Glass is not 100% scratchproof ( Proven on my HD2)
well It is really hard to brake.
You can consider buying a nice sleeve for your phone .
It is in my opinion a better solution
What I mean : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql37A-SgA3A
There is really no need for a screen protector. Care for your phone. It after all a remarkable peace of technology. Not just a toy.
Although I f you want a toy just get a Samsung.
100% Genuine plastic toy feeling.
bought a gel case with screen protector. the screen protector didnt fit. shame as the case is perfect. managed to drop phone on floor by accident outside. not a mark on the screen. will still get screen protector though.

That list says my G2 has Gorilla Glass too. It was a strong screen but it did get a small scratch. So I bought a Realook Premium Screen Protector it is truly crystal clear and responsive.
Same here, screen film also doesn't fit.

I bought the HTC screen film however the sides around the screen as its kinda lipped up would not apply correctly (bubbled up). Remove this after a few days and found a desire protector, applied it successfully, however obviously its a bit short. bought a case from ebay and it came with a protector, which covers the screen but does not go all the way to the edge, stuck on well and no apparent "bubbles". its ok quality. case is ok silicon case
The other thing I like about the screen protector I have on my HD2 (Hence my preference for screen protectors, is that the matte finish cut down the reflections on the reflective screen. That and I'm a klutz!

Yep: http://eee.asus.com/en/eeepad/transformer-infinity/features/
Doesn't mean that you won't need or want a screen protector though.
I don't use any screen protector for my tf700(whole family using it), droid Charge (my son and I using it)or galaxy S3(wife and daughter) and up until today, no scratch on any of them.
I don't use a screen protector on my tablet. However, my Samsung Captivate (just over 2 years old) has recently began scratching for some reason. But it doesn't really bother me since in a few months I'll buy a new phone anyways.

Oftentimes, the screen protector is not used for the most obvious effect of protecting the screen, but also to reduce glare (especialy when outisde or in high-intensity (i.e., harsh) lighting. That might be a reason for going for that screen protector anyway, the fact that the TF700 has Gorilla Glass 2 notwithstanding...
I would, however, highly recommend *against* using an anti-glare screen protector on the TF700 - I installed one when I got my TF700 and after two weeks or so, I removed it once I saw how nice the naked screen looked on my new Nexus 7. All that I can say is - WOW - the anti-glare protector *really* made a beautiful screen look bad! If you are going to use an anti-glare protector, you might as well just buy the TF300 instead since all of the resolution benefits will be "hidden" under that 10 dollar screen protector!

Absolutely no point to using a screen protector on the transformer. Unless you literally chuck things at it or chuck it around carelessly?

Couldn't agree with you more, and it's exactly why I've never used screen protectors myself. For some, the glare's too much. though.

Especially with the dock connected -- the laptop-fold makes it oen of the best-protected items in my work bag. Except maybe for the cookies I used to take along for the night shifts -- they oftentimes underwent cookie genocide during the train commute to work.
So many "do i need a screen protector" threads i dont know why these are not auto-locked...
Yes, you have gorilla glass.
Yes, gorilla glass WILL scratch
You CAN get dents / micro scratches / even full sized scratches in GG
You CAN use a device and never scratch the screen even without a screen protector the same way you CAN go to a dorm party and not get drunk. Just depends on you.
A screen protector CAN make it harder to swipe (esp the military grade ones)
A screen protector CAN reduce image quality
A screen protector CAN save your screen from getting worse damage and potentially needing to replace your screen.
Use your head. Gorilla glass is glass. It can scratch. Maybe not with something sharp like a razor blade but if you get grit or dust dirt rocks etc and it rubs against the glass that can and will make a scratch.
Anyone who lives in a place where they put gravel down in the winter knows it doesnt take long before you get pits all over your windshield. Those same pits can happen in gorilla glass. Yeah, you may not have scratches, but you can get all kinds of dings and whatnot. Hell, my S2 had a nice sized scratch along the bottom and that had gorilla glass.
You have to decide do you want the protection of a screen protector or do you want the tradeoff of a screen protector. If you like the feel of glass, dont want fingerprints, etc. there are oileophobic screen protectors out there (cost a bit more but better quality), dont feel like rubber, dont leave fingerprints, easy to replace if you do scratch them
Oh, and for those of you with a gorilla glass screen that IS scratched, give this a read:

Micro scratches on the screen?

Has anyone seen any micro-scratches on their screen since you've had your phone? I've had my phone for about a month and I'm seeing a couple on mine. It's only noticeable in certain angles under the light when the screen off , its not a big deal as I'm gonna put a screen protector on it which i probably wouldn't notice it any longer. But I am a little surprise that the screen is not as scratch resistant as I expected and I've been babying my phone from a physical standpoint.
Everybody knows gorilla glass 2 is not as good as the 1st one.,I brought a screen protector even before I received my phone lol.since pre-order have this phone not a single scratch except on the screen protector which I replace every 2 months.
stripped apart rebuilt with Clean Rom&XdaTechnology!!!
Here's a closer view
You can't even tell I have a screen protector on lol

+1 for this. I got 6x screen protectors for $3. Now that's [anti-]bang for your buck!
Never had them as I was smart enough to buy a screen protector the same day as my phone.
I got a tempered glass screen protector, love it.

[Q] Using the nexus 5 with only a screen protector?

Usually I use a case, but after a terrible experience with a spek case on my old s4, I'm thinking about only using a screen protector on my nexus 5? Any opinions? I do drop my phone, but not often and usually from 4 ft at most. I'm thinking about one of those zagg screen protectors...
I've found that since gorilla glass 2 screen protectors are a thing of the past. I haven't used one on my last two phones and I have no scratches on them. I usually use just a slim tpu case and no screen protector.
Sent from my One using xda app-developers app
Guess it just depends on what is a more horrible experience : whatever happened with your last case or coughing up a bare minimum $150 to fix the screen if you break it. Not that it's guaranteed you won't break your phone with a case, but your odds certainly improve.
Case is the most important. SP will save you a few scratches over time where as a case might save you $350.

Anyone using S5 without a screen protector ?

Hi S5 users:
Anyone using Galaxy S5 without any screen protector. I am interested to know whether using S5 without a screen protector cause any damage to screen or not. Since it's gorilla glass 3.

I am using it without case & without screen protector, I may buy a case but a big no to screen protector.
I did the same with S3 and it was awesome, no scratch, nothing.
I always feel using a screen protector delays the touch response a tiny bit & why do that...
I stopped using screen protectors once they started using Gorilla Glass and have never had a problem.
After using the S2 for over two years, the screen had some minor scratches (only noticeable in certain light).
So far my S5 is holding up pretty good - I see one little scratch, but not enough to warrant getting a screen protector. I may put one on, but I'm still undecided.
I'm using all the time since s3, when after few days I discovered few small scratches. Always is beter change screen protector then replace amoled display
My S4 was in my shirt pocket. I dropped a (actual glass) cup and when I bent over to pick it up the device fell out of my pocket, in what seemed as slow motion, and the edge of the device landed on the edge of the cup and shattered the screen. Since then I always go to BB and for $39 I get a "glass" screen cover. You cant see it and it picks up fingerprints less than your ordinary screen cover.
I'm only using a basic cover on mine and no screen protector. I've never really found a screen protector necessary.

No screen protector here. Had a galaxy s3 for three years, no screen protector and no scratches or damage at all, dropped it a few times as well. I am not sure if a screen protector would help in a situation like the dropped phone above?
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
It's great to not use one until you get that one scratch on the screen, especially if it is deep and obvious then you will regret it! It really does not matter how careful you are with it, it just takes that one contact with the wrong object and...damn!
For the sake of a few dollars I would advise using one!
Personally i wanted to use screen protector but with the s5 i like to wash my device to make it clean so to those Who has screen protector on would u please tell me if the screen protector still in good condition after the device meets water?
If yes could u please tell me which one cos im going to buy
Thx!

Used to be an otterbox defender guy and now i'm using the phone naked. I just make sure i'm extra careful. I always put the screen facing my leg in my pocket
So far i'm not using a screen proctector with the S5.
I have spigen tough armor case so the phone never sits ont the screen or on the photo sensor.
The S5 has some treatment against smudge and fingerprint trace!!
i bought a screen protector, i was using my galaxy s5 without one. unfortunately i put my keys in the same pocket as my s5 and caused quite a few scratches.
good thing tmobile replaced it though, i dont think i would go without a screen protector even if it has gorilla glass.

I used http://mimeusa.com/ on my HTC One, still have it in-fact, and it works perfectly, had one on my wife's iPhone 5 as well. Gotten it wet several times riding my motorcycle in the rain. I just ordered the feather version for my S5. Cheaper than a new screen and it's got a lifetime guarantee. My HTC fell out of my pocket and hit perfectly on the corner against a concrete floor, broke the mime glass, sent them an email requesting a replacement and they sent me a 40% off replacement coupon. Very easy to install as well. Love their product.

Ill be grabbing the Oleophobic from Steinheil. Best there is.
Is tempered glass worth it anyone?
I dropped my HTC Aria on the screen, replaced it myself, then dropped it again.. I ended up upgrading to a Galaxy Note, but decided to be smart about it.
I got an Otterbox Commuter series with screen protector, and loved it. I even showed it off to my friends. Lol.
Now with my S5, I got my Otterbox and screwed up the screen protector, so I'm using it without a screen protector until my spigen screen protector comes in. It's a shame Otterbox doesn't sell replacement screen protectors for the S5 yet... Only a few more sleepless nights left though...
Never used a screen protector and has held up just great.
Hate screen protectors.. I mean really. there are people out there with 50 thousand dollar watches, they don't use them. Maybe I'm just lucky(im gonna get a huge gash now, lol) but these screens seem strong!
2 weeks so far without screen protector or case. I bought both in store on release day but since discovered Samsung stated not to use a screen protector as it impacts the sensors.
