Lost all of my backup roms!!

Okay so I just installed CM7 which worked fined and i was reading that i should partition my sd card. So I made a copy of my sd card on my computer and continued to partition my sd card 256/64. After the partition I just moved the file back to my sd card in recovery mode. I then rebooted which worked fine and syncd my google account. I installed simple2ext so i could move my cache to my sd card because i was unable to update rom manager and su or able to install any apps bigger than simple2ext. I installed titanium backup and noticed i had nothing to restore so I was going to go back to my original rom to back everything up again. I backed up cm7 then went to restore my original rom and all my previous roms I had backed up were gone.
Is there something I did worng? and am i able to get them back.
I did some searching and looked in my sd card from my computer and looked in clockwork folder and found my backup folder. I tired to move all of them back but said insufficient space and was only able to move one.
So now my question is did all my data from sd card not transfer over?

if you made a rom backup, it would indeed be in the clockwork folder, as the progam that makes the backup is nandroid which is intergrated in the clockwork mod. Titanium backup is only for backing up loose apps and had nothing to do with rom backups.
If you still have the clockwork folder with the backups in them on your computer you should be fine. just transfer the one you want to use (they are named with dates and times) to the SD and go back into the recovery mode and use the restore option.
if you don't have enough space on your SD card, maybe you should make some available for the rom.

Yup found them on the sd card on computer. But how come they did not transfer after I recopied the SD card?

Had the same thing happen to me when I was on my GNEX. I now enabled dropbox to keep backup copies as well.

Something similar happened to me when I tried a ROM with 4ex recovery in lieu of clockwork. when i tried to access my backup it told me something about invalid md5 sum and backup failed. like it didn't exist. If all is still on your PC perhaps you should reformat the card then re-partition using a different source, and re-try.

[Q] Error when trying to nandroid backup with CWM

I made a previous clean backup prior to rooting the phone using the Odin method posted by Copperhed. Still running the stock at&t rom.
All was well. I moved the backup file over to my computer hd to free up space on my external sd card. I was tinkering around with different sd cards last night and accidentally formatted my main sd card that I usually use on my phone. No big deal.
I decided to try out some new roms and kernels so I wanted to make a nandroid backup. Instead of using the odin method to install cwm, I downloaded rom manager and flashed clockworkmod recovery.
I formatted the sd card to make sure space wasnt an issue. I clicked on Backup Current ROM, it was given superuser access and the phone rebooted into CWM. I thought this part was automated but it wasnt. Once the phone booted into CWM, it just sat there at the menu system.
No problems, I navigated down to backup and restore, then hit backup. I did some google searching and people have said this version (5.0.2.7) of CWM does not show a progress bar while backing up.
After clicking backup, I get the usual screen of it mounting the card and displaying how much space is free, then saying it is backing up boot image, recovery image, and system.
Takes a long while then just gives me this:

Any idea of why this would be happening? I searched around but did not find any solutions. The only core things I have installed on my phone currently is Titanium Backup Pro and SetCPU. The rest are just day to day apps, todolists, camera, games.

Forgot to mention, after rebooting the phone when I get that error, I check the external sd card and see a backup folder, but there are only about 3 files in there, so it makes sense because it failed making a full backup.
I just now tried "back up to internal sd card" and it started working right away.. showing files and progress bar moving.
I guess this works too, I can still move the backup file over to my pc.. but this kind of worries me.. is CWM not seeing my sd card correctly?

Another update..
At the end of the backup run (to internal sd card) I get:

When I mentioned formatting the card earlier, I used the phone itself to format it.

I think it has something to do with the variance between the T-Mobile version of CWM we are using on our Skyrockets and what should actually be on the CWM version for the Skyrocket (which still doesn't exist--wtf?! )
Disregard the error message, it's looking for a folder on the T-Mobile version that isn't on the Skyrocket.
If you used the "Backup to Internal SD Card" from CWM you should be fine. I've backed up this way and restored backups without incident.

so if your phone went through a soft brick or something bad happened messing with different roms and such, youre still able to boot into cwm and restore from the backup file that is stored on your internal sd?
i just want to make sure, in the case that we cannot boot from cwm / access internal sd, that we will be able to do so from the external sd.

I don't have a whole lot of faith in our CWM (which was built for a T Mobile variant). I've had a ton of weird messages any time using it and I'm surprised there isn't more talk about it here. I've seen a lot people casually mention the error messages so I know it isn't just me.
I don't know you'd lose the backup if restoring from a soft brick where you'd have to go back to stock first to fix it (never tried it). But I can tell you that if you flash a rom you don't like or doesn't work right you should be able to successfuly restore a backup made in CWM (after wiping data, etc., of course).

All you have to do is install the rom you had when you made the backup for the data going to the advanced options in backup recovery and restore data only and ready

understood. but in the case that the phone does mess up and for some reason it doesnt read the external sd card, would i still be able to access the internal sd card for my backup with cwm?

Just got my G2SR from ATT. Going through the motion of rooting it following instruction here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
I also tried to do a backup to external SD and get the same "Error while making a backup image of /system"
I searched around and I tried the instruction here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472954 by adding clockworkmod/.hidenandroidprogress in both /sdcard and /sdcard/external_sd/
It's still stuck in "backing up system". I have tried reformatting the SD card and perform error checkin on Windows, but that doesn't fix it.
Has anybody back up to the external SD card with CWM successfully?
And how exactly do we back up to the internal "/sdcard". When I go backup, it would complain I don't have an sdcard if I don't have the external SD card.
[update] I am on ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.6 and I don't see any "backup to internal SD' option. Do I need to update my CWM and how do we do that?

CWM shows my backups.. starts restoring my backups.. then gives me an error about E:..
Trying to recall for sure.. I think it said sd-ext is an unrecognizable format, and wouldn't restore anything.
It would take a new Rom ZIP from the external SD card and install it just fine, just not the backups I had made. I can access the data just fine..
Any suggestions on exactly what the problem is and how to fix it?
Current CWM (5.0.2.0)
Rom Mngr 5.0.0.7
Running Weapon 3.0 ROM

Check your SD card, you should have folder called "clockworkmod" inside find folder "backup". Inside this folder are all rom backups that you made. I think your backups got corrupted. Once you are in the folder try renaming your backups(change the name of the folder) like 2012-02-original or 2012-04-22.MIUI, 2012-04-29.CM7(just samples you can use your own labeling but try to keep same format.) Hope this helps, if not format SD card and start all over again. In the future make sure when you have everything set on your SD card to make a backup to your PC.

that's pretty much all you can do, other then that report exactly what the error said, i assume that these were all on the same recovery, how much space is on your sdcard. Was there an error when the backup finished? What are the files on your Clockwork Mod Folder list the files with on one of your backups...
mine has these folders.
boot img
cache.ext3.tar
data.ext3.tar
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.ext4.tar
any of those in there? my backup is something like 520mb...

Well happened to me before all i did was wipe all data, cache, and dalvik before i restored and it worked for me

Ahh, I just assumed that he would've done this prior to trying to restore, That is probably the issue. I've seen it before, I think on my MyTouch 3G.

When ever I change roms it deletes all backups, and even deletes clockwork mod recovery. I have no idea what is going on. This didn't happen on my gnex. I have a 2 gig memory card in it. How can I put all backups and recovery on the card? It deletes the rom folder I create to put all the roms in. I have to create the folder every time I change roms. This is anoying as hell. Please help. Thanks

I think your doing something wrong because it shouldn't do that, what ROM hase it done that in? And what at our steps to flashing? As to backups on your sd car when you go to backup there an option to back up to external so card.

I was running jellywiz, and I flashed the executioner. I had to reinstall cwm. And I had to create the roms folder again, the folder where I keep my downloaded roms. As for flashing roms, I do a factory reset, wipe davlik, and cache. It's kind of annoying having to recreate everything. Thanks

Did you flash a 4.2 ROM??? It does that if you don't use an updated recovery.

You are definitely doing something wrong because that is not expected behavior.
A 2GB SD card is ridiculously undersized for backups. A single nandroid or TiBu would likely take all of that space if it even fit. Perhaps it's failing to backup to the external card and defaulting back to internal memory?

I would recommend at least a 16G sdcard. You need that much to stores backups, stock boot rom, custom rom, and you data files to restore. Things like contacts, calendar, etc should always be backed up before you install custom ROM.
CWM is a good boot loader to use as it provides many options and also use something like Titanium backup as your backup manager.

If you do a data reset from the updated recovery will it delete the directory on the internal SDCard where the backup of the stock ROM is?

What recovery are you talking about? If it's cwm touch no it doesn't! I factory reset every time I flash a new ROM (and I'll flash a couple a day sometimes) the only way you'll delete those in recovery is if you manually delete a backup or if you go under the mounts and storage menu and format internal SD card.

So I am talking about the clockworkmod stock rom backup. When I backup it puts the backup in the following location which I will call LocA:
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
This is not my SD card tho. My external SDCard is located at which I will call LocB:
/mnt/extSdCard/
But I also have which I will call LocC:
/sdcard/
I when I go to look at the ‘Phone’ while connected to USB I can see LocA and see the backups, when I use the app SDCard Manager I can go to LocC and I can see that they mirror each other. Why is my stuff duplicated? It is wasting space?
Also when I boot into CWM recovery the menu that says load from SD card actually points to LocA. My fear is that since LocA is really internal memory that a factory reset will delete this and since CWM recovery cant see LocB that I will be locked out. In other words cant load the backup of the mod or the new downloaded CM10.

Okay gotcha, a factory reset does not delete your internal memory. What it deletes is your user apps, settings, etc. That is the same place mine is backed up to and like I said I factory reset every flash. However, if you're really worried about under the backup option in cwm select backup to external SD card.
As for the sd card 0 and SD card. I don't believe there are really two files of everything. I believe it's more just naming for the android system, but maybe someone else can confirm this for me

With that info im confident i wont get stuck in some limbo. During my lunch break ill try to flash CM10 again this time with a factory reset and see if i get further than the spinning logo.

I don't do the cwm touch. For some reason I can't find any roms that I've backed up, So I use the typical cwm. I don't know, maybe it's just me, I'm screwing up somewhere. But everytime I have to reinstall cwm. Thanks for the help

I am FAR from being an expert, but i had to reflash cwm everytime i restarted the phone until i flashed it and from the menu selected prevent stock recovery.

[Q] TWRP Backup Failing

I have a Droid MAXX with 4.22 (jellybean) installed, unlocked bootloader, rooted, with TWRP 2.6.3.1 installed.
I use Android File Verifier to verify backup and keep getting Java read errors on the backups. If I open the backups in Titanium Backup, several files are missing, so the backup if definitely bad. I've made several backups, all with the same error. I backed everything up on my Internal SD and used TWRP to wipe the internal SD, thinking the partition was corrupt. No difference.
I installed TWRP 2.7 thinking that might help. The files seem to verify through a little further but then fail with the same message. I've attached a screen shot of the error message.
Any thoughts? I'm freaking out not having a good backup and I'm scared that maybe the internal SD in bad? I hope not, I like my unlocked MAXX! Is there a way to format or sector check the internal SD? I don't think the wipe in TWRP actually does a format, just an erase.
Anyone else having similar problems? Things to check?

Have a look at and/or post your log from twrp. You can find this under advanced options then copy log or use the command adb pull /tmp/recovery.log.
Also, I know in the past titanium backup hasn't been great at extracting nandroids. Try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.bkrestore and see if it makes a difference.

Have you actually tried using the backup to restore? You sure the app you are using to check isn't the issue?

Switch to Philz it will handle twrp bu's too. You can watch the md5 check going on before you command the restore to take place. At least on 624.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. Here's what I found:
Tried TWRP 2.6.3.1, 2.6.3.0 and 2.7, all with the same result. Corrupt files. I verified this using Android File Verifier (great utility, used for years). When running Calc MD5 checksums on the individual backup files, some would verify and others would not.
Running multiple backups with each version resulted in failed backups. On a weird note, I could not remove the TWRP directory using either Root Explorer or ES file explorer. Both would cause the phone to reboot. The only way I could remove the directory was using file manager in TWRP.
Switched to Philz recovery and ALL backups verified just fine! Although it doesn't have the fancy interface or some of the features of TWRP, it gets the job done!
My conclusion is that there's some sort of issue with TWRP writing to the internal SD as proven with the incomplete backups and the directory problem it caused on the SD. I would recommend others use the Android File Verifier to make sure they are getting complete backups!
