How to Activate IR blaster remote? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi does NEXUS 5 have IR blaster and remote function and how do i access this feature? Thanks.

No, the Nexus 5 does not have an IR blaster.

Kitkat natively supports it but no ir blaster

I was reading a tech site "Droid-life" ...about Android 4.4 features...and didn't bother reading the hardware specs of the N5. My bad.... was....really excited about the phone . lol. Ohh well how many grace period do i have to return the phone?

You're going to return the phone simply because you can't turn your TV on?
Why are so many people wanting to return this phone for the weirdest reasons? Its almost like the "Preorder Canceled" meme but people are serious this time.

you want a phone to watch TV with :| no offense buddy but thats silly. It is a cool feature, had it on G2, but happy with Nexus 5. speed difference is actually very noticeable.

I was hoping to see this on the N5 too, but definitely not a reason to return it! I have one on one of my tablets, and it barely gets used. Just use a remote and keep a great phone.

Those tech sites are horrible, always leading people on. Gosh how many people have fallen for the ir blaster feature. Leading us on to think we all had it on the nexus 5. You know what you should return it. Better yet since I'm so mad about this happening to you I'll do you the favor of returning it for you. Just ship it to me and ill pay you what you paid in the play store. Yeah i know i don't want it either since it doesn't have an IR blaster but I feel like being nice today and doing you that favor. So just get rid of it man it's totally a pos phone now since it cant turn your tv on.

I had/have an s4 and never even used the ir blaster - too much of a pain to set up... more of an initial gimmick IMO

Thanks, Maybe I'll just play with this Nexus 5 and force my self to forget about that feature that I want. I forgot to tell you guys I have an LG G2 too , It has a remote function.....that's why I was hoping N5 have it too... , I think it's a cool feature that every phone must have. It's usable if you have home appliances with IR blaster receivers . "Also the LG G2 charger,...charges the Nexus 5 faster than what it comes in the box".

Besides a television or home theater what devices have it functionality? You think it's a needed feature on every phone, really? I guess I would have to be using at least 4-5 ir capable devices daily for extended periods of time to warrant it being needed in my phone...
None of the devices you use with ir remote come with regular remotes?

Just saying, you cant return it. If you already opened the box, you're done for. Google only accepts sealed box returned according to their return policy.

If for any reason you don’t want to keep your device, you have 15 calendar days to return a device from the date you received it. The device and accessories must be returned to Google in its original packaging according to the instructions provided in the Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) form. Google will issue a refund in your Google Wallet account for the amount paid for the device, less any shipping and handling charges, within a reasonable time after Google receives the device
Doesn't say anything about the box having to be sealed...

WE have a lot of home appliances with IR receiver....A/C and etc. I don't have to name each one of them...you can do your own research! lol. Yes, Off course! a little extra set of features is better than, none! People have different needs and Wants! You don't have to generalize that every human being on this planet have the same wants...or needs....as you! That's why I said "I think".."purely a suggestive opinion".Specially Nexus devices with extra features...think about the possibilities that devs can mod with it!

Wow. Sorry about that. For some reason, it was taking me to the Indian google play site. I kept wondering why it said an "Indian partner will inspect the device". I was like, what? Why Indian partner? lol Okay then, sorry about that.
In the US, you can return open box. I live in CA too, so it's really odd that it directed me to the indian site.

Again like you I'm also stating an opinion, I simply don't know what device have IR capabilities besides Television and an home theater/cable box.
Devs have the option of making apps on the SGS4 and HTC One and have seen some apps but nothing out of the ordinary. I just don't think you can say that every phone NEEDS it, beyond personal use and preference it's pretty much like wireless charging great to have but equally as good without it.

I just got mine in the mail today and have yet to open it. I am seeing all these post with the issues of the phone and honestly they have given me allot of second thoughts. Now i am debating selling it and getting an LG G2 instead. If i open it and play with it i will immediately kill the value of the phone.

Do you guys even read? The OP is not complaining about his Nexus 5 unit he received and he hasn't opened it yet so he can preserve the ability to return the unit and get a full refund. The OP is implying that he has been seeing issues with the Nexus 5 which he is a bit concerned about and is not sure if he wants to keep it or not. The OP didn't imply that his unit is defective nor did he say what he received is not what he expected. Sheesh learn to read.

Best phone I've ever owned. Can't speak to the G2, but I've owned Droid Charge, Droid RAZR, GNexus, GS3, Nexus 4, GS4, and Moto X. Nexus 5 is leagues better than all of those except the GS4. With the GS4, it comes down to preference, and I prefer the N5.

You're making decisions based on issues other people are experiencing.. Nothing is ever perfect considering this is the first batch of new N5's. Overtime LG and Google will work together to identify what the problems are with the devices. Especially when you aren't going to open the box and speculate that it "might" have issues. Even if if your phone had issues, you could always call Google and request an RMA to get a replacement device. Why bother buy the device if you're going to think twice about it?
Holy crap the reading comprehension of some of you guys is in the gutter. Did you not read anything i wrote? I made it pretty clear that from reading of the issues in other people post that its made me hesitant on even opening the box. That was the whole point of the post and was asking if other who had been using their phones were disappointing or would take back the action of buying. So next time you want to jump down someones throat READ the post.
As far as the guy that said i had to open it, are you serious? What do you think "New in Box" mean... it means unopened 99% of the time. Ive sold hundreds of unopened phones, they sell much faster when they are new and unopened.

Cool story bro.
I love this phone. It's fast, fluid, and a Nexus. Can't compare to a G2 or GS4 or any other current Gen phone because I haven't used any (coming from gnex), but the phone just feels great in my hand.
I'm assuming you ordered the phone because you wanted the Nexus experience over another OEM. If that's the case, go for it and enjoy your device. I haven't had any issues with mine at all and there are fixes out for some already (saw a thread here about a fix for the jiggly power button). And any real defects should be covered by warranty.
I say go for it. If you really want a different device, then sell it I guess.

Yes i wanted a unbloated Android, i have in the last 6 months had an S4 and a HTC One (current phone), i can get both of them with google editions however they both lose things(HTC One loses lots of cam functions with play edition) with that. When i saw the Nexus 5 it was a phone made for the Google edition and that was the selling point for me. I saw the fix for the button but considering we all just paid $400 for these phones we should not have to open the phone and put paper inside it so a button doesn't rattle lol

Should I buy a Nexus 5?

Hello, I'm considering buying the Nexus 5, But I read that there are some common problems with the device Link, So is the device worth buying?, If so are there things I need to keep an eye on?, Like the box code or something? To be sure I have a fully functional model. Any advice is appreciated!!
Greetings,
GianniDPC
You'll need to decide that for yourself. You may have none of those issues in that link you provided. Or you may have some of them, or all of them, or more than them. See where I'm going with this?
Get the phone and if it doesn't work out for you return it. I think it's a fantastic device, by far the best Android phone made to date. imo
Read THIS and make your own mind up
About half of the issues listed in OP's link are common on all smartphones these days. Any phone can come with dead pixels, there's always a bad apple in a batch of good ones. Tons of smart phones, even iPhones all have rattling buttons. All of the others issues are primarily fixed in software updates, and I haven't had any of the issues listed.

I haven't experienced any of those problems, had mine for about a month now and I'm loving it, for what it's worth.
I just want to chime in with a simple "yes". Even if you WERE to get a device with an issue, you can exchange it under warranty.
I'm in love with this phone. I got it specifically because its a root machine and has tons of development. Its an amazing device. Get it.

That's the thing with people now a days..lots of people complain about a certain device having "issues" that other people become unsure if they want the device.I personally don't believe in what people say in the forums with the issues they're having.I purchase a phone because its what I want if I were to encounter issues then I do if I don't then that's great.but I'm not gonna let what some people say about them having issues stop me from buying a device I want. You simply just have to buy it and test it for yourself.most people are just picky and start complaining about random stuff.I will probably get lots of hate about this post but I've been seeing a lot of "buying a nexus 5 but seeing lots of post issues, should I still buy" threads. You just have to buy the phone and see for yourself. Just wanted to put my opinion out there

As others have mentioned, buying from Google means you can always return you're phone for any hardware issues. They will even cross ship you the new phone so you're never left a day without a phone and can compare the two models before sending one back.
The supposed "issues" with this phone are severely overblown by some extremely nitpicky people. Get the phone. It's awesome.

Going to buy second-hand N5. What should I look out for?

I'm going to buy a N5 soon from someone, since all the retailers are either out of stock or very overpriced. Although I have bought other phones from him, I like to be super-safe.
So, are there any issues specific to the N5 that I should check for before I buy it? How do I check the life-timer? Can that timer be reset w/o unlocking the bootloader?

Not sure newer devices have them, or I have just not noticed/found it. Check the usual stuff, sensors, buttons, physical state, charge port etc. Tbh should be OK if you have bought from the same guy previously.

Neither of those services are available in my country.
Hello,
1. Make sure the device isn't cracked, scratched.
2. Check for Loose buttons.
3. Check whether the GPS is getting locked or not.
4. Make sure there is no bleeding on the screen
5. Ask for the original receipt/bill and see whether the phone has warranty in your country or not.
By taking a look at the bill date you can get to know the date of purchase and can get a rough idea about the life timer or whatever it's called.
If you have all the above points covered, I guess you are good to go!?
Also, make a phone call with it to make sure the other party can hear you ( very important )

Worth it to buy?

So I have that urge to buy something new and I've stumbled across the sony SW2 in my looking around and I was wondering if this would be worth it to buy? Those of you who have had one for a while, do you think I should get one?
I think it all depends on its use per the individual, it is very handy for me when I'm at work and in a meeting I can see who's calling and read messages etc and also when I'm on my motorbike also saves me having to pull out my phone to see whoa calling messages etc. I would say though if you have a Samsung phone then probably have a look at the gear

If you can get it for less than $150, that's a decent price... However, there's LG's and Moto's watches coming out this summer if you can wait a few months - but those are rumored to be around $250.

If you need a device to remote control your smartphone, then yes you should get it. If you are happy just taking your phone out of your pocket and using it, then you dont need the Sony Smartwatch 2. It is not an indepedent device. It can do almost nothing by itself, it is 99% dependent on your phone.
The best way to describe it is that it is a second screen to your smartphone. To be able to use it you must have your smartphone on you, at all times. It not autonomous working at all.
Hi all,
can this Sony SW2 keep the time by itself if I go running to the park and leave my phone at home? Just keep the time.
I know it would be more useful to take the phone in my pocket and probably try to have an Endomondo's Sports Tracker widget on the smartwatch.. does anyone knows about a good sports tracking app like Endomondo's ?
Thanks.
Sure, why not. It's only money.
I have had mine for 8 months and love it. I had not worn a watch in perhaps 20 years. (I'm a reformed pocket watch user.) If you like to know who is emailing and testing when it happens, covertly, it is great. There are other things it is great at too, but those are the #1 use. I like the color screen v.s. monochrome screens, but battery life suffers. Price is reasonable, relatively speaking, but if you are an Android user and have a little more $$, I'd wait until summer to see what the new Google based watches bring. They appear to be a step up. The only thing I'd wish for is voice transcription to reply to email or text and I believe that's coming in the Google OS watches.

Yes it can. And your SW2 comes with Runtastic, which is pretty okay for me.
Sw1 can keep time only till it has battery or has not been switched off. If you switch it off or battery finishes, you need to connect it again with your phone to get time.

Also it has no speaker or mic so youd need a bt headset. Which can already be used to answer calls.

Note that you cannot answer from the watch, in any case, using a galaxy nexus.

Because the calling app that Sony offers to you onli offers the 'answer call' button on Sony phones. Unless you move it to the system partition, which requires root.

LOL It's a fair question, I joined this forum when I have a Qtek 2200 (made by HTC and also known under the brands XDA, O2), and after a Qtek 2020i, and used this forum just to get some informations. When this devices become obsolete I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5830 but I didn't like the Froyo GUI so I change to iOS devices that aren't supported here. But since a few months ago I become tired of it, always the same and without big changes, and planned to switch again to android that had a big improvement since froyo and its know more appealing to use.
One of the thing that I found out immediately was the different ROM's available to install, and I have been playing with them in my devices.
So it's natural that now I had reasons to post, to clear my doughts.
I don't use to write just to make number, I hope that you'll be clear.

I see in the call extension app description that "answer call" is for Xperia Only. I have a rooted HTC One M8, but I did not move the app to the system partition (I doubled checked just to be sure); however, I can answer calls with my Sony Smartwatch 2. Not sure if it is because I am rooted or not, but I wanted to pass along my experience with my phone and the call extension app in question.
Rob
I've found that the lack of a 'Call Accept' button is not a major deal breaker for the Call Extension program. Wired or BT headsets have the action button, so the SW2 is still good. PLUS, with the recent upgrades to the core program, it's perfect to setup for a 'idling watch-face' that contains the pertinent information that I need.
Remember, the watch will allow you to tuck the phone back into the pocket or holster and leave it there. I myself enjoy starting an album as I leave the house to catch my bus for work, then just use the SmartMote Extension to change the song or tweak the volume on the sly.
Oh, and with the phone settings extension I found, I can cut the phone's Wi-Fi when I leave a well, so it doesn't draw extra power looking for a connection - without going fully into the watch apps, because it's latext update puts a shortcut directly into the watch-face itself!
Yeah, I'd recommend getting this watch, if you need a new watch. Once you have it, you find reasons to have it.... (Not the least, because it reduces the need to turn on the phone every five minutes to check it.)

Well....the dark side has finally gotten ahold of me....Ditching the S6 for the iPhon

I've finally gotten tired of dealing with all that I've had to deal with for having an android phone on VZW. I'm tired of having to hack a phone just to get it to work correctly and even then it wasn't a garauntee. Android you were fun while you lasted...been with you since Eclair was new

I thought Android was the darkside . My wife and I went to Best Buy on Friday for new phones. I have always purchased Andriod and she always get's an iPhone. My wife got a 6S which was just made available and I seriously considered getting one also. One thing about iPhones is that though they are locked down they just work and they work great. I have owned 3 Android tablets and 5 phones. It seems like I spend more time tweaking them with rooting and ROMs than using them. My wife never does anything with her phone but install apps and she never have issues. So after about 15 minutes with a patient young sales girl I ended up with the S6 anyway. I was lucky enough to get an OE2 firmware and I already rooted. But I'm seriously considering taking the latest update and get out of the rooting and ROMs hassle. I have about 10 days left to decide if I going to keep or return the S6. My main concern is the battery. I'm retired and I have a landline so I probably don't use my phone as much as most people here but I travel often and don't want to worry about running out of juice. So if the S6 doesn't pan out I'm leaving the darkside for an iPhone.

It may not be inherently an issue with Android, but the issues Android has on verizon are not present on Apple devices.
When Apple agreed to place the iPhone on VZW, Verizon had to give them sole control of their software. The only thing VZW does is the baseband and radio for their networks. Everything else is in Apple's sole control. There is no verizon bloatware, VZW can NOT add or remove any software or features, ie...Samsung pay....
I believe that many of the issues that Android devices suffer from stem directly from verizon putting their noses where they don't belong.
It's taken years for me to get to this point. I've owned numerous Android phones from all of the manufacturers, and it's truly been an enjoyable ride. But the increasingly difficult security coupled with vzw's encroachment into the software side of the house has driven me to get fed up with it all. I just want a phone that works....that doesn't suffer from horrible memory leaks, that has decent battery life, that isn't plagued with cell standby issues, and evidently going to the iPhone is the only reliable way to do that.
I like the S6. But it does have it's issues. The main one for me is battery life. This could be because they decided to shrink the battery down or from software flaws...ie cell standby, memory management, or bluetooth being enabled never allows the phone to go into deep sleep (this is a new one I started experiencing a few weeks ago). Plain and simple....I have owned the S6 since launch day and the battery life is terrible. I have yet to get through a half a day without needing to charge and that is just unacceptable to me. My fiance has had her iphone 6s since the 24th and has only charged it twice. With 3-4 hr on screen time a day and pandora running for about an hour a day.

This is very true. I love Android, but I am sick of having to jump through holes just to get it to be clean. I hate how Verizon butchers everything and Samsung doesn't have the balls to stand up to them. Apple is able to do that. I have no hatred against Android nor iOS. I go by features that fit my requirements and the S6 has the best - Primary being the camera. However, I've noticed my photos have been blurry and the S6 can't decide what to do in low-light and doesn't use flash, which forces me to have people re-pose what should have been candid. I do believe the iPhone 6s will have the better camera (or at least he software to use the camera) and I would like to jump to it. It's just, the lack of IR, private mode (obviously just software), and battery life/fast charging, are big killers for me. Given the smaller battery and worse battery life, charging the damn thing is so slow. At least implement a fast charging feature and I can overlook my laziness of looking for my TV remote and privacy mode.

You do realize that Android / VZW do the exact same thing right? There is nothing that Android offers that Apple doesn't that's actually useful to me...I like widgets and such but I don't need them. And you know what? At least apple doesn't feel it necessary to force a hard warning about volume levels damaging my hearing...
Use to new able to remove that annoying little stuff via rooting/terminal emulator/ or romming.....well that's all but impossible now

I can relate to what the OP is saying. I have had an android phone on Verizon since the OG Moto Droid. I enjoyed tweaking Android phones. I have the S6 64gb right now. I love certain features of the phone but it is flawed. I was hoping that the new Nexus phones would be great and they probably will. However I don't want to have to buy a phablet to get good specs and better battery life.
I just purchased the iPhone 6s for my wife. Were on vzw and I may switch myself. It is a struggle cause I don't know anything but Android.

Haha enjoy your walled garden dude. I hope Apple approves of all the apps you want to install because you're not installing them otherwise. Maybe you don't have a problem with it but I hate being told what I can and cannot install. If I have to sit here and point out all the things you can't do on iOS that you can do on Android then you're better off with iJunk anyway. Have fun! Say hi to the "geniuses" for me. Once again, bye.

Oh you mean like the people who post about Apple in the GS6 forum just for attention? Just switch and leave. Change your iphone launcher or sideload an app. Maybe use NFC to initiate a macro. Activate your notification light with different colors for different apps... the list is endless. I'm not sure what you are looking for.

I'm far past the point in my life where I need to be validated by anonymous people on the Internet...chances are...judging by your behavior....I was using Android while you were still in elementary school. If you'd bother to have read my posts, you'd know that I've been using /hacking /flashing android devices since long before they became mainstream. Get over yourself
My post was meant for those users (who btw outnumber you in this thread) that may be in similar situations or experiences.
Changing my launcher? I don't even do that on android devices....too many bugs most of the time. Use NFC to initiate a Macro? I've done that, and it can make things a little more convenient. But I would rather use it to pay at the store. Something you can't do with the S6 because verizon has the android companies by the balls and just says "we aren't going to allow you have that feature" ...changing led colors? Really? Why even mention that?

That's what I'm saying. I've been doing it for so long it's just become second nature. I miss the OG Droid....that was a tinkerers dream. After years of doing it though, I'd rather spend the time doing things that are more fun. In other words, I don't care about customization options or 3rd party apps anymore. I just want a phone that actually works and works well out of the box, not needing any intervention on my part other than picking it up and turning it on.
This most recent issue with my bluetooth not allowing my phone to sleep was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Could I fix the problem? Probably....do I want to devote the time to it? Nope....not anymore.

Until recently you would have been hard pressed to find a bigger advocate for Android than me. There were always two features that kept me with Samsung...a removable battery and expandable storage. But when you remove those two features and basically make an iPhone clone you are going to lose on the software front. Especially when your hobbled by VZW and all the crap that they do to mess up a pretty good product.

I have an S6 and the battery is a LOT better than I thought it would be. I use my phone CONSTANTLY for work everyday outside with the brightness all the way up and I usually make it home most days with a little juice left. I have a Mophie case on it everyday but rarely have to use it.
There both good operating systems it doesn't have to be one or the other yea a nexus is fun to flash the **** out of it but obviously Apple doing something right too it's more about Verizons locked bootloaders.
