Nexus 5 outgoing VOIP over cellular hanging up - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I use Tmo's $30 plan and also VOIP in the native dialer for calling. Had no problems over WIFI but over cellular call would ring, then hang up right away. I figured out it was the IPv6 setting in the Mobile Networks/APN for Tmobile. I changed the fast.t-mobile.com APN Protocol to IPv4 like it was on my Nexus 4 and no problems, LTE works, calling works and so does VOIP over wifi and cellular. Might save someone some headache

Thanks for the tip. Just switched to T-Mobile. Got everything finally setup tonight...I'll be trying your setting recommendation tomorrow morning.
Could you elaborate more on your VoIP setup? I'm trying to figure out the best way to utilize VoIP on the $30 plan.

UMA Wifi Calling

I hooked up my new MT4G to wifi and it prompted and notified me of wi-fi calling.

Technically it's not uma because it doesn't hand off to.and from the tower like blackberry... But I'm equally excited.. Tested and confirmed on mine as well

Please stop calling this UMA. It's not the same thing at all.
Wi-fi calling is a clever way to push people on to their own wifi infrastructure. Rather than continue to use cell tower bandwidth, you use your own broadband connection for both data and voice traffic. The best part (for them) is you still use your minutes.
Most people never bother setting up wifi on their phone, because they simply don't have to. The mobile network is available 24x7, and wifi eats battery life. Now, get to charge you *and* get you off their network at the same time.
Brilliant strategy, but I'll pass - I'm not paying T-Mobile to use my own bandwidth.
You would if you were somewhere you didn't have coverage. Or even better if you were out of the country and wanted to call back to a US number and only use your normal minutes and not pay for international roaming.

The only problem I had was whsn walking away from work or my house it would drop the call vs the hand off like the blackberrys uma calling feature.
I also think we are all aware this is not a true uma. I will try to edit my op to correct.

This is a great feature, i'm just confused why they wouldn't build it to allow it to seamlessly handoff to cell towers.
That would b a hardware requirement and raise the cost.

Change your APN settings!

When i started using my Skyrocket i noticed my data was very patchy(would work here and there and not let me open certain websites and speedtest.net app was not connecting at all). I looked into the APN settings and noticed it said "PTA". I looked into this and found out that it was for the new LTE network. I do not live near a LTE area nor do i think ill be getting it anytime soon(i live in south new jersey). So i googled at&t hspa+ settings and found this forum that gave the settings for hspa+ and mms and rebooted my Skyrocket. Boom! Ping times down to 80 and speedtest.net app connects asap. Every single thing i do that involves internet is instant. If you dont have LTE in your area i highly recommend doing this.

I live in Maine, we don't even have "4g", let alone lte. I have not messed with my APN settings and data has been flawless for me. I get 3.5-4mb consistently at my house (3g) where I used t get anywhere from 500kb-2.5mb, with a rare spike of 3mb. I also have yet to try anything data wise on my phone that was "blocked" or didn't work.
This temporary solve the problem. At&t is behind this. Take a look at your plan. From I'm seen the Unlimited plan I was grandfather in has restrictions impulse . The 2GB data plan said you could freely stream, search ect. Calling at&t wtf is this BS. Piss off
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Data speeds vary so widely depending on 100's of factors. The "speedtest" apps themselves are barely reliable, you can run them 5 times in a row and get huge variations. You can't get true results based on one 5 second download. One time I get 10ms ping and 5 seconds later I get 9,500ms. One time I get .2Kbps and 5 seconds later I get 9MBps download.
Most of these speed test results and their fixes are just smoke and mirrors and the "results" are totally meaningless because they will vary from one SECOND to the next.

Yep, it's probably to get you off the unlimited plan.
Just call AT&T and tell them what kind of bull**** is this, ***** for a long time, threaten to cancel your service and go to Verizon for an LTE network that's faster (lies) and spread out more, and I'm sure they'll come to some agreement.
I am on an an unlimited plan i have had many phones that never had this issue and my data was consistant. I knew it had to do with the APN. FOR ME this worked. It seemed like my skyrocket was picky about websites and facebook did not want to refresh and the issue with the soeedtest.net app wasnt its accuracy it simply would not connect AT ALL. It just never found a connection. When i would use wifi everything worked perfect for me and still does. I did not delete the stock APN so when lte comes around ill just go back but for now im back to my normal CONSISTANT bandwidth. And im clocking faster speeds at my house than any other phone ive used

Anyone using the PTA APN with the 2GB "Unlimited" Plan have issues going to sites like.. say www.justin.tv?
I personally think the PTA APN is restricted and has NOTHING to do with which plan someone has.
Find someone with a 2GB Plan and ask them to use the PTA APN and see if they can get to ... www.justin.tv

good so we can lay this to rest that
1) the new PTA APN is restricted, and it DOES NOT matter if you have an unlimited grandfather plan or a 2GB plan. it's JUST AT&T blocking certain website
2) there is NO secret/conspiracy with AT&T trying to get unlimited grandfather plan people to switch to the 2GB plan, because regardless which plan one has, if you are using the PTA APN... it's restricted.
I added the apn to my list and now I can access the Justin.TV site. Thanks for the input.

What's the wifi calling feature US members talk about?

Hi,
I see that in the dev section, whenever there is an EU-based ROM thread, some US members ask for the wifi calling feature to be added.
But what is it?
I got a One S with the stock EU ROM (no carrier ROM) and there is also an "internet calling" option in the call settings. There, I can give the settings of a SIP account.
Is this the same thing, or do US ROMs have another additional feature?
i think its the same thing, but as far as i know its only tmobile US that supports it. it allows you to make calls via wifi in low signal areas

You are correct, if I'm at home I do not have TMO coverage so I link to my WiFi and I can make calls w/o any issues. One really nice feature the TMO has!

Probably because people do not realize wifi calling is potentially the same thing as your internet calling. Change scares people....
I don't think that it is exactly the same thing (even if it may accomplish the same thing). For TMO US folks you don't need to enter any sip info. You just enable it and choose wifi preferred, wifi only, or cellular preferred.
Yep. In fact it completely turns off your gsm radio and all calls and smses come through the WiFi. You are dialing out using your tmo number and everything. But instead using GSM towers you are using your WiFi.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
ok then this is obviously not the same as the sip one since it does not shut down the GSM radio and cannot send texts
Wifi calling on TMobile US has a couple additional benefits. First, you can add a free feature that makes it so the minutes used via Wifi calling do NOT count against your purchased minutes. Second, you can use Wifi calling when travelling outside of the US to call and text back to the US, or people in the US can call and text you. And if you have the free feature added, none of those minutes will count against your total purchased minutes either. I have used both of these benefits extensively and they are wonderful.

How do you get this free feature? I've always thought it was ludicrous that wifi calling counted against my minutes, but since I used so rarely back then I really didn't care, but recently at work I get no signal and have been using the wifi calling a lot more.

Interesting to read about this feature.
Is it basically possible to connect to any wifi net ( usually there is a password protection) or do you basically need your providers ones?
If the WiFi is password protected, you need the credentials to establish a WiFi connection before using this feature.
*It is not restricted to provider-only networks. You can use any WiFi network you have access to, and that you phone can connect to.

In your t-mobile account, you should have Wifi-calling as one of the free features. If it isn't there, add it manually or call them and add it. The minutes over wifi are still logged and counted, but don't count towards you package (so you can see how much you use wifi calling, but not pay for it).

It seems to be comparable to the TMO "Hot-Spots" here in Germany in which you can log in for free by signing certain contracts or paying additional fee.
The other thing is connecting to WiFi resulting in a VOIP connection.
Ok, got that now. I didn't know that this feature is that popular in the States. As e.g. Germany geographically isn't a 'big' country we have a very good coverage with our big providers.
@home: I'll have to check my Fritz!Box. AVM offers an app for WiFi calling for mobiles. Interesting stuff.
Well, thanks so far for your answers and your time.

Nexus 5 tethering block?

I'm on T-Mobile US and tethering have been working fine for me without paying for the extra tethering fee on my Nexus 4. I can do wifi and bluetooth tether to ipad, nexus 7, and a laptop with user agent switching. Got my Nexus 5 today and nothing works, I keep on getting the upsell page even after playing around with different APN settings. Put my sim back in my N4 everything works. Anyone experiencing the same issue? Maybe Google changed something in KitKat.

What T-Mobile plan do you have?
Supposedly they are giving free wifi hotspot access with nearly all of their plans now, even prepaid.
Perhaps you need to check your APN or register the imei # somehow with T-Mobile.
I had to upgrade/downgrade myself today cause I was using a $10 unlimited web plan with my galaxy nexus, but when I tried to use the fast.-t-mobile.com APN (for LTE access) I got the upsell page as well, no data at all.
What I went ahead and did was sign up for the $30 prepaid plan (100 mins 5gb data) and transferred my number over etc, worked great. I had a micro sim activation kit though, which asked for IMEI number etc. Supposedly I will have wifi hotspot access @ 100mb/month but I haven't tested it yet.

Not exactly sure which plan you have but I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is now including free wifi hotspot/tethering for free now. How much monthly data allowed depends on your plan.
If they are giving it to prepaid folks there is no reason why you shouldn't be getting it.
If you install the T-Mobile My account app from the play store see if it shows "mobile hotspot balance". If not I would call them as inquire about it. Don't return it too quickly...

Ok I remember reading you need to have one of their "Simple Choice" plans to get the free mobile hotspot. You might have to change your plan, not sure if it will cost you more to do so though...
I'm assuming the plan you have now is unlimited, and you don't want to switch to the 2.5gb plan, and if you go up to unlimited its probably going to cost you more than you are paying now...

I've used tethering with my Value Plan (1000min/unlimited data) for over a year now. It just doesn't work with the Nexus 5, put the sim back in my Nexus 4 and it works fine. My plan didn't officially come with tethering. It worked fine with my iPad and android tablets. It would present the blocked message on my laptop. I was okay with that, since I didn't subscribe to an "official" tethering plan.
I don't know if this will be fixed with a custom rom, becuase it seems like it is at the core of KitKat. I also tried flashing the bare AOSP ROM, and tethering was blocked with that as well.
Also seeing the blocked tethering over here. On the $30 Tmobile plan and the Nexus 4 works perfectly tethering. Put the same sim into the Nexus 5 and it just redirects me to the sign in page for Tmobile. Hope this is fixed or this will be a massive negative towards this phone, probably even a deal breaker.

Are you trying through a PC? Try tethering another mobile device like a tablet or phone and see if it works...

I'll try that in a minute. Either way, the chromebook was able to tether with the nexus 4 without problems every time.

Does not work on tablets or mobile phones. Changing user agent on laptop no longer works.

I think it is a T-Mobile thing, as I see other people talking about successfully tethering their nexus 5 all over the place. Might just be a small subset of T-Mobile users. Either way its very annoying. Wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to use a different app to tether, but I don't even know if that would or could work.

I wish someone could confirm a resolution before I open my box.

You have to figure only a small subset of users have received theirs yet, and an even tinier subset of them even care about tethering, and even a smaller subset of then have even tried it yet. Every Nexus device is a disaster until you let it settle in for a week or two and let the wrinkles settle out.
Change 4g data plan
There's a new 4g data plan which includes 2.5GB hotspot data. You still get unlimited phone data for the same price as before. $20/mo.

WiFi calling

Has anyone gotten the T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling features to work on the moto x?

Doubt it. There was a huge bounty for someone to get it working on the nexus 4. Never happened. Probably won't happen here either.
I'm on Republic Wireless, our moto x is a modded sprint phone. My WiFi calling works amazing.
PS I used to be on T-Mobile with my HTC One. I just couldn't resist the savings that RW gives me.

How's sprint service? I'm tempted, but everything I hear about it is horrible. I had sprint before and it was bad, especially data.
I had sprint before actually. I had a GSII that I bought on contract 30 days before the GSIII announced and launched. So I was stuck with a 4G wimax phone in an area where we have no sort of 4G. And I was stuck paying for that useless 4G.
I'm happy with republic since with WiFi I don't worry about call reception. And it roams on Verizon if needed.
And for data plans I can pay and use 3G if I wanted to or 4G if it ever comes here. But I'm happy not having data when driving or shopping. And only paying $10 makes me happy with that decision.
But yes I won't lie. Sprints 3G is usually abysmal. My fiancée just got an iPhone 5S on sprints one up. Now he's paying $96/month for the same service I get on a ****ty iSheep device.
If I wanted to use 4G I'd only have to pay $40/month and thats comparable to T-Mobile pre and postpaid. And republic let's you switxh plans twice a month if you want. They are talking of simply selling buckets of data too for people like me that are happy with just cell calls And texts with WiFi only data, but occasionally wish we had a bit of mobile data.

I have sprint, how do I use Wi-Fi calling?

No input on Wi-Fi calling but I will chime in on Sprint services with the Moto X!
I am coming from and 18 month old Evo LTE, rooted to the Moto X with the Sprint SIM card installed (bought from MotoMaker Cyber Monday) Had to activate the phone through a chat conversation on the activation website.
-I will admit that I am now actually very pleased with Sprint service in my area....
-It actually connects really well to 4G and STAYS connected....
-It (usually) re-connects to 4G when in an area of 4G unlike with my Evo (meaning it would sometimes connect to 4G then the next day I wouldn't even be able to connect to force 4G in the same location)
-The Sprint 4G speeds SUCK at best though. Check Sensorly speeds in my 4G area..... you may see a 14mb but average would MAYBE be 6MB, me that's 3G speeds.
-I still am thinking of dropping Sprint. Sure it's unlimited but Sprint has taught me to rely on Wi-Fi.
Well doing some research I found that republic wireless uses sprint signal. Even doing a coverage check they say to look at sprints maps. So I also seen that bringing a sprint phone to republic wireless is not possible because of republics wifi calling or what they call hybrid calling has specific code baked into their phones Rom.
So with that info how hard would it be to extract that features code from their Roms for use on Sprint phone s? Or could a Sprint phone flash a republic rom and be able to use that wifi calling feature on Sprint.
Wifi Calling has always been closed source and will never be available on 3rd party ROM......If something change it would be #1 news on XDA
So just to put this out there. My cousin has a HTC one sprint phone and he was complaining how it kept popping up something about unable to connect to WiFi calling whenever he tried to call someone. I took a look at his phone and were settings in his phone related to WiFi calling. But it was wanting account information or a sip account. Thought that was interesting.

I think the SIP internet calling options were added waaay back in GB?. Maybe it wasn't until ICS. OP wants native wifi calling. Google Voice + Groove IP is about as close as you can get for now.
Odd, I thought you could activate Internet Calling with a build.prop change & something in the permissions folder... Noticed I had it on my CM10.1.3 Galaxy Note.
