[Q] Mini MicroSD Card Reader for Android - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was really hoping that this would work right out of the box. Although the website has not been updated to reflect Nexus 5 compatibility, it does say;
"Google: Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 (2012 Original & 2013 New), Nexus 10; all require third-party software or device being rooted."
When it mentions third-party software, they mean Nexus Media Importer. But, then there is that "or device being rooted" Just rooting the phone does not make it mount, what else am I missing? Can anyone tell me how to mount it? My goal is to transfer file between the micro sd card and internal using ES file explorer.

[Q] Accessing the SD Card

Tablet arrived and ive popped in a class 10 16gb micro SD card.
Music and Photos and ebooks are discovered automatically (which is fine) but some apps dont let me 'find' the SD card. ES explorer shows it as 'Removable' bu things like Polaris office I cant seem to find it ???
Any thoughts ?
I have noticed some problems like this as well.
Also, on my android phones, apps can be "moved to SD" card to preserve internal memory. Can't seem to find that option...maybe a honeycomb thing...not sure.
It is not an official update that enabled the microsd function. It was a workaround Asus put in so that we could use the slot. Until an official honeycomb update addressing this issue is released, it will only function in a basic capacity. Most apps don't recognise it because it doesn't reside in the usual place in the filesystem that a microsd card would be, in other versions of android. So either a developer has to update their app to get around this, or you will have to wait for a honeycomb update.

SDHC Card Recognition on Galaxy Tab 7.7 (GT-P6800)

Hi All,
I've seen questions similar to mine here but no answers so, at the risk of being repetitive, here's the problem that I would very much appreciate help with.
I have a new SGT 7.7 running ICS which can't be rooted so what seems to be the standard response to getting the Tab to recognize the micro SD card (in this case a 32GB Samsung Class 10 SDHC) doesn't apply. The card has been reformatted to FAT32 but I still the message, "The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated. Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device." The only thing that does show up on the SD card is a wallpaper butterfly I downloaded, but no apps, even those purported to be able to be moved. The move to SD card option never appears.
Kies for Mac is on my iMac and I've moved a few songs from iTunes onto it and it appears they are now on the card. However, the music does not appear anywhere on the Tab so the card is still not being recognized.
I'm totally frustrated and at wit's end. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or need to do to fix this so that I can move suitable apps, music, and photos onto the card?
Thank you so VERY much!
somebody please help me,,after upgrading from 3.2 to 4.0 ics my korean version tab cannot connect internet,,,the apn setting didn't work ,,,i guess i need to change back to honeycomb,,it works well on 3.2

Rooting P6800
Hi Whomever You Are,
No, I can't root the tablet. I'm a 67 yr. old Android novice and doing this on my old Mac is beyond my ability. I've seen nowhere that I can have it done. Also, the third direction says, "Put the created folder at your External Micro SDcard." As you noted, the SD card can't be used. Finally, the tablet is now back in Hong Kong for repair -- defective battery. Thanks anyway.
You can put the zip in internal SD. It still works.
Internal SD?!?

Hi Skycruzer,
That's interesting. I know what an external SD (card) is and what internal memory is but I've never heard of internal "SD."
What is it; where is it; and how do you put zips into it? I'm afraid there's more to this tablet than I'll ever master. Maybe
when it gets back from Hong Kong I should just send the Tab to you to root and do whatever with. How's that sound? LOL

the internal memory is call Internal SD on samsung device... same thing...

What is the unable to write to sdcard issue?

Hello, there are several threads on this topic. I am confused. I read that it is a problem with KK. What is this issue anyway? Does that mean if I buy a SCANDISK sdcard and insert into the device (be it 10.1 2014 LTE or PRO 12.2, both under KK), the device cannot write files to it? I

It depends on the application. I am able to copy music and picture files to it using EXFile Explorer but Aquamail will not save attachments to it.

Android apps can only write to the specific folder that Android created for that specific app on the SD card.
Google argues that this is more secure because this way rogue apps can only mess up the files in their own directory.
This is annoying because you cannot save a file that was not created by the same app, for example if you inserted an SD card straight from your camera.
However, this highly annoying problem is not a bug, it's a feature. Google was never really a big fan of SD cards, hence the lack of an SD card slot on their hardware. Other manufacturers however implemented SD card slots, forcing Google to deal with this "security problem".
There are apps to fix this, however that requires root a tablet. rooting this tablet is not yet possible without breaking Samsung secure (KNOX) support permanently.

So, if I don't want to root nor have this problem, I go for the Note 10.1 2014 and use Jelly Beans until Google does something to remove this feature? How likely are they going to do it?

Playing music via external SD card

Hello. Just got the Pixel. I have an external USBC Satechi SD card reader that I would like to play music from. When I put in the SD card it does read it. I can play music.
I would like to use an app such as poweramp to read the folders on this SD card. Is this possible?
I've tried poweramp and mortplayer with no luck.
Thanks.
I don't know if @Chainfire 's StickMount app has been updated in a while. Until I started writing this I actually forgot about the app. I'll have to try it as on three different devices now, starting with Lollipop 5.1.1 or maybe it was 5.0.x, USB access seems to be harder to achieve. What workarounds I find for particular apps on one device don't necessarily work on another, and I haven't had any success on the Pixel at all yet, but going to play with StickMount if it's been updated lately and see if that solves the issue for all apps.
Edit: It should be noted that I've had zero trouble accessing USB drives from TWRP on the Pixel, therefore it's definitely only a software issue.
Edit 2: No luck. I wonder if in my case it's related to the fact I use ExFAT on my USB drives though? I'll have to test tomorrow with a spare smaller drive formatted FAT32. Both StickMount and X-Plore File Manager (the latter has a USB checkbox in it's settings that appears to work similar to StickMount but just for that app) report no recognizable partition to mount.
I don't know if Google doesn't make kernels that support Microsoft's licensed ExFAT format, although maybe another kernel might if not. I'm using the PureNexus kernel FYI, since I'm on the PureNexus ROM. I had the same trouble on stock Pixel whether rooted or not. On other devices I can usually find the USB drive listed under root/mnt/media_rw/xxxxxxxxxxxx, but not on the Pixel. I'll try to update tomorrow if I have time to test a FAT32 drive.
Update: Confirmed that my 32 GB USB 2.0 FAT32-formatted thumb drive mounted automatically with StickMount installed and configured. Likely using my file manager of choice X-plore's USB option probably would've achieved the same thing. Note that at least using StickMount (and probably would be the same with X-plore's option) that I still had to navigate to root/mnt/media_rw/xxxxxxxxxxxx in order access the drive, at least from X-plore. No idea if the behavior is different with other file managers.
Thanks I will give this a shot!
I just noticed that you must be rooted for this software. Unfortunately I am not...
Last I knew, any device that comes with a external SD card has to pay Microsoft a license fee, this is why you won't ever see a SD card on a nexus/ pixel/Google device.

A Question About Galaxy Note 10.1 SD Card (64gb) Internal Support

Greetings fellows. This is my first post so let me thank you all for bringing and providing such useful things about developing mobile.
I have been following the forum for a while as visitor, yet decided to join the family to ask a question. Recently I have installed https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10-1/development/rom-nougat-t3505239 Android 7.1 Nougat on my device and it is working very well so far. Also I have installed and formatted Samsung Evo + 32gb as internal storage which is also working pretty as well.
My question is that If I insert Samsung Evo + 64gb (or some other else 64gb micro sd card) as internal storage would it work as well with my device Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012). Is there anyone have tried it on their own tablet before ? As I search the internet I only have found the device supports up to 64gb, yet in format fat32. So there is no certain feedbacks around. I would be very glad if you clarify that.
Thank you all
64GB SDcard should be working
Interesting: I'm also about to install the latest-possible lineage 14.1 (in my case: lineage-14.1-20170305-UNOFFICIAL-n8013.zip) on a 2012 Galaxy note 10.1 ( in my case: GT-N8010). However, I didn't succeed with that version of lineage. This also applies for the version lineage-14.1-20170116-UNOFFICIAL-n8013.zip. Only when choosing the version cm-14.1-20161208-UNOFFICIAL-n8013.zip, my tablet finally came up and seems to work ok (not everything tested yet, but wifi, installing another keyboard, and some files manager worked). And from that I can tell you that it works with a 2nd SDcard having 64GB (in my case SanDisk Ultra), at least as external storage. Did not yet test whether I can format the additional 64GB as internal and still have the previously internal 16GB available. Somewhere I read that older Android versions did switch off the previous internal storage (will test that if I get the 64GB SDcard content moved somewhere else). - Regarding my problem with the lineage versions: Could you please verify, which version your tablet in fact is (N8000, N8010, ..) ? Mine claimed to be the GT-N8010 (only wifi) when still running JellyBean and KitKat.

AddOn:
Still using the aforementioned cm-14.1-20161208-UNOFFICIAL-n8013:
Just tried to format my 2nd SDcard as internal and it works, although the systems grumbeld that my card (SanDisk Ultra) seems to be slow and that I would experience better results with a faster one. Maybe so, I thought, but at least it shows ~74GB available now. Recently I stumbled across a page where they tested and compared read/write speeds of different microSD cards (yours included) on an HTC One, maybe that helps. I am not yet allowed to post links here but if you search for the "terms micro-sd-karte-mit-android-nutzen, schnellste , androitpit" you'll find the page I am thinking of, maybe that helps (though in German).

aqua14
AddOn2: Even though Android tells me that I have ~74GB, I don't see the additional memory from a Windows PC anymore(!). Android tells me:
(a) Internal (unified?) Memory: 3.83 GB of 14.68 GB used
(b) SDcard by SanDisk: 0.97GB of 95.46GB used
My PC shows only:
Internal (unified?) Memory: 10.3GB free of 11.7GB
This way it might get difficult to access saved photos / other stuff any more from outside.

aqua14
