[Q] Accessing the SD Card - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tablet arrived and ive popped in a class 10 16gb micro SD card.
Music and Photos and ebooks are discovered automatically (which is fine) but some apps dont let me 'find' the SD card. ES explorer shows it as 'Removable' bu things like Polaris office I cant seem to find it ???
Any thoughts ?

I have noticed some problems like this as well.
Also, on my android phones, apps can be "moved to SD" card to preserve internal memory. Can't seem to find that option...maybe a honeycomb thing...not sure.

It is not an official update that enabled the microsd function. It was a workaround Asus put in so that we could use the slot. Until an official honeycomb update addressing this issue is released, it will only function in a basic capacity. Most apps don't recognise it because it doesn't reside in the usual place in the filesystem that a microsd card would be, in other versions of android. So either a developer has to update their app to get around this, or you will have to wait for a honeycomb update.

[Q] MicroSD doesn't show up when connected to PC?

Thanks guys, I hope someone knows how to fix this.
When I connect my Asus EEE Pad Transformer to my PC(Windows 7) via the USB cable, I can see on the PC a new device named "Computer\Transformer TF101\Device Storage" which is my built-in 16 GB, but there is no device for the Micro SD card - it is actually visible in the EEE Pad (at /Removable/MicroSD) and works pretty normally within the Pad.
How do I transfer my files to the MicroSD from the PC then?
I don't want to take out the card and use a card reader, btw.

I would like a response to this as well.
Just for curiosity... you don't see any folder named similar to "sdcard" inside the visible 16gb directory?
Go to:
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/
Download tab and then pick your OS and then download PC sync software?

It happened once or twice that I found a folder named 'MicroSD' in the 16gb directory - it is indeed the MicroSD card, but now it is gone and I have no idea why.

That's weird... I am waiting for my Transformer to arrive, btw.
Did you tried a full restart on the tablet and try again?

Yes I did. but I havn't tried factory reset yet.
More than connecting transformer to PC by the usb cable, I usually use some app like "Websharing" or "WiFi File Explorer PRO". Sadly there's no way to upload data to the microSD card using one of these apps either
Until now, I've been removing microSD card and putting it in my USB all in one media card reader!
well what you can do is simply copy it to internal and then use the HC filemanager to copy it to your microSD, that's what I do.

A good workaround, but quite frankly, these are the sorts of little inexcusable things that companies need to check for before they push out products. Hopefully Asus fixes this very soon in an OTA soon. There's absolutely no reason why the MicroSD shouldn't show up as a separate drive when you connect the device to your computer. (Even my Nook classic does that!)

Well you can always get a Xoom (which doesn't have microSD support at all).
Pretty sure they figured rather a functioning microSD card slot that can't be accessed by USB than no microSD card slot at all.
I'm sure it'll be fixed in an update.

Asus seems to have put together a fantastic device, so I have no desire to choose a Xoom over it. My issue is with the increasingly prevalent over-reliance on OTAs to fix simple things that should have included from the start. (And that comment by no means applies exclusively to Asus.)
True, but when you buy a honeycomb device at this stage you pretty much are always buying on potential, since honeycomb is really new and even google admitted it was rushed to market. With that come the inevitable gripes and snags.
I haven't had any issues accessing the micro sd from my computer. If you have the MTP drivers loaded from asus's website should just show up at the bottom as a "music player" that you click on and shows device.
In the device is all the folders on the internal sd card. One of the folders is MicroSD which is your micro sd card.
I've dumped about 30 gb of stuff on my micro sd without any problems.

Quick question, when the "sdcard" folder is inside the visible built-in storage directory, what is the total capacity that your OS shows? It's the built-in storage + SD Card? like 16gb + 32gb = 48gb? or how?
Sd Card
Mine shows up in file manager no problem -
/removable/microsd/
It shows up on my computer -
/device storage/micro sd

When you hover over the device in my computer, it only shows availablity of the internal storage, and right clicking and hitting properties on the microsd folder does show how much space is taken up on the card, but haven't seen a way to show totaly capacity and how much is left in windows.
Easiest way is just check storage under the settings on the tablet.
just so you guys know, I noticed your PC wont see the microSD card folder if you dont pop it in/out after every time you reboot the tablet.
Pretty sure this is a restriction with Honeycomb. The design was intended for internal storage (hence the dynamic internal flash storage). External is just for media.
Seems the fix needs to come from Android devs and applied to the framework. Would not hold my breath for that, since if you keep up with the Android dev forums, they were not fans of adding external storage in the first place. The OEMs (except Motorola) did their own workarounds just to get stuff working as is. Seems a minor miracle that Asus were able to get the keyboard and its storage functions working.
Guys thank you all for the replies and discussions.
I replaced my MicroSD card today and was surprised to see the new card appeared as 'Computer\Transformer TF101\Device Staroage\MicroSD' in my PC!
Now seems it has something to do with the card itself - no idea what it is though. Both cards worked pretty fine within the Pad btw.

[Q] - Mount SD card like my phone does

I've poked around but I dont think I found what I am trying to do. I want to mount my SD card like it mounts my phone; install the apps to the device, store the data on the sd card... any way to do this?
You can' do it, honeycomb doesn't support installation on external sd cards for now. Vanilla honeycomb can't even write on external sdcards, for exemple on the motorola xoom. You can read/write on some tablets thanks to the respective manufacturer's 'tweak'.
I dont want to store the apps on the SD card, just the data, downloads, photos taken from the camera, ect. all I see is a Removable\MicroSD folder which I can browse to, read/write to, but I want all the data on my apps to go to it too just like on my phone, so when I wipe, all my stuff is still there (In theory)
They won't be deleted even if they are on the internal storage even after wiping. It acts as a sdcard.
I might be mistaken, but thanks to the honeycomb 3.2 OS update, it IS possible now that they've opened up the API to the developers.
Unfortunately, it actually depends on the application developers to make use of it... Leave some comments on the android market for your apps and maybe they will do it.
i'm probably mistaken. post from a random website regarding new features in 3.2:
Media sync from SD cards, allowing users to load media directly from an SD card to applications which use them
I did not realize that the folder was persistent, that's good to know thanks

Save to MicroSD?

This is my first tablet so please forgive these dumb questions. I've been spoiled for years with CM# on my phones so I'm having a hard time adapting.
Is there a way to force apps to use the MicroSD card when saving? Example: In Dolphin HD, you can set your download directory. It defaults to "/mnt/sdcard" which is internal memory. I want to change it to "/Removable/MicroSD" but it keeps telling me that path is not available and to pick another. I googled a bit but all they tell me to do is save to internal then copy to external. I know I'm going to get tired of that really soon...
Some apps allow me to save to the external card. I set K-9 to download attachments to the card and it took the path but when I actually save an attachment, it says it's successful but I can't find the attachment in either internal and external memory. And yes, I did confirm I typed in the right path.
Any suggestions?
TIA
I don't know if this is the issue, but ASUS has decided to mount the external memory cards under a directory in the root directory ("/Removable/microSD" and "/Removable/SD"). Have you rooted your TF700? Most other systems I've used (the SGS2 primarily, and the LG O2x) had the external cards mounted under /mnt/sdcard/(_)External_SD, or under "mnt/emmc" as is the case under CM#. It might drop down to not having write access to these directories (although that'd be strange and never encountered efore on my devices, at least)...
EDIT: under Opera, for example, I can save an embedded image on XDA on the external microSD and I can find it with Total Commander (and open it with QuickPic).Still, I'm rooted.

Thank you for the reply. I haven't rooted yet but plan to do so this weekend. I'll see if that makes any difference.
as for reading from the card, yes, I can confirm that I can do the same - anything I put on the external card, my apps can read from it. I just can't seem to make apps write to that card, only internal.
Thanks!

You're welcome. Indeed, I meant that I can save an online image using my browser of choice onto the external memory. That's what seems to be the bottleneck in your case.

Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I can confirm Opera works as advertised. Seems to be the only browser that can.
Stock and FF do not allow custom download directories
Dolphin HD didn't accept paths to external memory (and won't allow downloads larger than 2GB )
Chrome didn't allow downloads at all :crying:
Thanks again!

SDHC Card Recognition on Galaxy Tab 7.7 (GT-P6800)

Hi All,
I've seen questions similar to mine here but no answers so, at the risk of being repetitive, here's the problem that I would very much appreciate help with.
I have a new SGT 7.7 running ICS which can't be rooted so what seems to be the standard response to getting the Tab to recognize the micro SD card (in this case a 32GB Samsung Class 10 SDHC) doesn't apply. The card has been reformatted to FAT32 but I still the message, "The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated. Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device." The only thing that does show up on the SD card is a wallpaper butterfly I downloaded, but no apps, even those purported to be able to be moved. The move to SD card option never appears.
Kies for Mac is on my iMac and I've moved a few songs from iTunes onto it and it appears they are now on the card. However, the music does not appear anywhere on the Tab so the card is still not being recognized.
I'm totally frustrated and at wit's end. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or need to do to fix this so that I can move suitable apps, music, and photos onto the card?
Thank you so VERY much!
somebody please help me,,after upgrading from 3.2 to 4.0 ics my korean version tab cannot connect internet,,,the apn setting didn't work ,,,i guess i need to change back to honeycomb,,it works well on 3.2

Hi Whomever You Are,
No, I can't root the tablet. I'm a 67 yr. old Android novice and doing this on my old Mac is beyond my ability. I've seen nowhere that I can have it done. Also, the third direction says, "Put the created folder at your External Micro SDcard." As you noted, the SD card can't be used. Finally, the tablet is now back in Hong Kong for repair -- defective battery. Thanks anyway.
You can put the zip in internal SD. It still works.
Internal SD?!?

Hi Skycruzer,
That's interesting. I know what an external SD (card) is and what internal memory is but I've never heard of internal "SD."
What is it; where is it; and how do you put zips into it? I'm afraid there's more to this tablet than I'll ever master. Maybe
when it gets back from Hong Kong I should just send the Tab to you to root and do whatever with. How's that sound? LOL
Elena
the internal memory is call Internal SD on samsung device... same thing...

Does the LTE w/ microSD truly let you install apps to SD card or Link2SD needed?

I have an LG F6 but the storage problems on 4GB constantly come up. I read that the new LTE has microSD card and some reviews that I have seen seem to say they let apps install to SD card and others say they don't truly allow apps on sd card due to Android latest updates not allowing this. Youtube videos show me that someone does install apps on sd card but he says a big BUT and then I can't understand him because of his heavy accent.
Before buying this phone I want to make sure I can install large game apps to the sdcard or will have to look for a different phone.
Thanks.

Some apps will and some won't. It's a KK limitation I believe. When you go to your apps list some will have the option to Move to SD or move back to Phone from SD and some won't. None of the system apps will let you do it.
