There's a couple ways to do this. The first way, which is what I do is to use xposed+ gravitybox for expanded desktop + PIE controls. You can add a toggle in your quicksettings to turn it on and off at will. Here's a easy guide I put together for it- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554592
Another way also uses xposed but it uses a module called App Settings which allows you to set immersive mode on a per app basis. You can download it from the xposed installer app.
Both methods require root but work on the stock ROM.

Nexus 5 Expand Desktop without CyanogenMod

So I had CyanogenMod 11 installed for a while and whilst I much prefered it to stock android I am a big user of the camera and I couldnt stand the CyanogenMod camera so I have gone back to stock.
Whilst I am mostly finding stock completely useable, one thing I am really missing is CM's option to expand desktop.
So I am wondering if there is some img that I can flash to give the phone this feature without having to install the whole rom?
Thank you.
Bump
Search for xposed framework, then follow the instructions to install. Reboot. Download GravityBox (can be downloaded from within xposed app) and activate it. Reboot.
Expanded desktop is under display tweaks in GravityBox, and there's even pie control in status bar tweaks.
Don't forget to thank the devs

+1. I use this method on both of my phones and it works beautifully. There is also an immersive mode option in gravitybox but I much prefer standard expanded desktop + pie controls.
I wrote up a semi detailed guide on how to set it up- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554592
Thank you very much to both of you, much appreciated

Thanks for the guide. Do you have any idea how I can automate this in tasker for stock 4.4.2 rom? (i.e. auto immersive mode / expand desktop for specific applications) I have tried enabling it via secure settings, but it complains about my rom.

You know, I never got into tasker so I can't help you there, but there is an Xposed module called App Settings which allows you to set Immersive Mode on a per app basis. It's a must-have module, IMO. You can download it from the Xposed Installer app.

Wow, that was all I needed Thanks a lot... Tasker gradually becomes obsolete for me for many tasks, day by day...

Expanded desktop

Hoping somehow we can get expanded desktop working without root. I have a Nexus 6, and love being able to hide the nav bar.
Yeah I think so

Oohh indeed, my bad
I must have seen this in an other of his videos. A double tap on his button enabled expanded desktop.
But you can see at the begining of the video, the S8+ (on the right) has expanded desktop enabled, there is no navbar
I will write a tutorial after I finish up with a Google Assistant app I'm working on for work, In short I used a combination of button mapper and Tasker to get the desired effect without root. I also did not install the update which blocks modifications to the bixby button.
you can do it on any version with bixbye, tasker, and autotools.
use bixbye to trigger a tasker task.
in tasker create a profile "event - plugin - bixbye" and have its task be to trigger immersive mode through autotools.
That sounds good.. would the bixby button disable immersive mode too? Ie a second press?
Are you able to put together more detailed instructions?
Try tiles app works great you can add immersive mode as a quick setting
Sent from my SM-G950U using XDA-Developers Legacy app
This is the tutorial I followed for it
http://www.themefoxx.com/2017/04/ho...r-and-status-bar-on-the-galaxy-s8s8-plus.html
No root needed - using ADB commands
I'll try this out, fully immersive experience will look awesome on this phone.

Yes there is an app called Shortcutter, when you're in the app allow root features, then go to "Toolbox settings", scroll down to "Customisable tiles" and enable immersive mod. Work very well, i still using it since the first time i've found it.

I have this app, Only that you can not exclude some apps so I prefer not to use it
There is no app needed. See the following thread for details and warning about battery drain. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3621622
I enabled immersibe mode on my Nexus 7 for two single apps using USB ADB command without having root. It works and I have no battery drain.

In settings, if you go to Display>Advanced>Display Size and turn it to small it makes content on the display smaller.

Enable developer options and set smallest width to 500 .You might want to also max out text size in display settings. Still not small enough, go up to 580!
Anyone know a launcher which will hide the navbar. I know lineage OS has the option to hide status and/or navbar.. I don't feel like using the adb hack to go immersive mode, would be nice if a launcher offered the option

If you have root I can get rid of it for you.

I know you didn't feel like using the adb hack, but if you were happy to have a single adb session you could use SystemUI Tuner - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zacharee1.systemuituner . You just need to set give it the required permissions in adb and then you can control immersive mode from the app whenever you fancy.
It also allows a couple of other handy things like setting custom notification snooze durations.
Thanks I will try this.

Thanks. I am looking to hide it like lineage OS where you can swipe up to see it again, not totally remove it. Was hoping a launcher might have that but haven't seen one yet.

Question 3rd Party Launcher with Vivid Navigation Gestures

In the app settings for Vivid Navigation Gestures, it has the option to hide the navigation bar. It says I can do it through ADB without root. Does anyone know how to do this or can give me steps to do this without root? Thanks!
so i entered the command (ive tried this with Fluid navigations also) that it gives to hide the navigation bar and it does not hide the buttons or the navigation bar... Is there a way to hide them and still use a 3rd party launcher with either Fluid or Vivid navigation apps? Thanks

Does not work on miui there is only one way I found without root that would work. I'll post it later. Much easier with root and no reason not to root
Ok. How would I do it if I did root? I'm just kinda worried I might mess up the phone.... If I only have a Mac computer can I still root? Thank you.

i know nothing about MAC you'll have to google.
use the app setedit you can download in the play store
use adb to get the proper permissions, if you check the app description in the play store it says the command you need to enter
select global table on the right side and find
force_fsg_nav_bar 1
i'm not sure if the standard value is 0 or 1 cause I already have mine changed. so if its 1 change it to 0. if its 0 change to 1.
you will have to do this everytime you reboot though
much easier and better to root, install magisk and hide with a module. read my tips/tricks thread on what you need to do
Thanks, the setedit app worked great. When I restart the phone, do i just have to go back in to change the value? That would be all I need to do to have it hiding the buttons? Thanks again!

Yes. There is a way to buy the app and it will auto do it when you reboot too. You'll have to try to figure it out
You can hide navbar without root using adb by changing into miui gestures overlay. It works until you reboot your decide, then you have to repeat.
Here's the command:
adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural

Hey all:
Vivid Gestures keeps losing accessibility settings, and I need to keep reenabling it.
Does anyone else have this problem and (ideally) some kind of solution.
Thanks
Ok...
Started using Full Screen Gestures, and that seems to work better
You cant use third party launchers then, correct?
Full Screen Gestures is an app, an alternative to Vivid.
It seems to play nicer with the Fold 2.

And I'm using Niagra as my launcher, which is great with foldables.
