My last two phones have had CM with wifi tethering beautifully integrated. This will be my first nexus phone and I assume CM isn't a option yet.
My question is what is the best option to get wifi tethering up and running tomorrow when I receive my N5? thanks!

Choices Choices
Thanks, any recommendations?

I'm sure a native tether hack will come out, just wait a week or two for someone to figure it out
If you're on sprint, none of those choices work.
Sorry I should be specific, I'm on T-Mobile

wifi tethering is built-in to stock android. check settings, wireless & networks/more, then tethering & portable hotspot.

Nice! I wasn't sure if those settings were added by CM when I flashed it on my other phones. Thanks for the confirmation!

Sorry for hijack.. But out of curiosity :
If you use the phone to tether.. Does it natively use wifi AC?
Would be cool for my laptop

Lists LGP999 in the list. I hope this is what we want.
Here's my issue: My phone is from Wind Mobile in Canada. The only choice inside the app for carrier is T-Mobile which then lists the LG-P999DW. I don't want to brick my phone. It doesn't say it must be from that carrier, but the model only shows when you select it. I assume there's no connection except for user friendliness in the update app (yeah right, check out that Engrish).
It gives a few precautions and whatnot (charge full, remove SD)... Someone give it a shot and see what it updates!
This mobile support tool is typically used for drivers. I expect a notification for GB.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
When you do the model name search "LGP999" it says Upgrade is available.
At work without my USB cable. Could this possibly be the fixes without the gb upgrade?
Its nothing ...its said that since release ...and you Canadians, isn't your phone skinned differently all together?

This guy is right.
And all ROMs are able to. Unless posted otherwise.

I was curious about this too. I'm on stock rooted with tweaks and was wondering if I could still do this with out Sprint knowing on the one that came with rom in settings.

I'm pretty sure the Nexus series of phones don't have carrier tethering apps which broadcast that they're tethering. If it is the version you find in your settings on the ROM, it should be counted normally on your data plan.
I've used my phone as a hot spot on sprint and so far it just shows up as using regular data like anything else.
Hand delivered, one step at a time.

When i am setup to do tethering from my phone i go to speedtest.com
it goes through the process and determines what server is closest to me. i live in medford OREGON. it shows me as being in KS.
how is that possible??
Try and change the server in the tools tab at the bottom (second from far left):

Edit: are you using the test via browser or the app from Google Play?

The server will change just fine if i do it., however i don't understand why it wants to pick the wrong location by it's self.
If i run speedtest from my phone it picks the correct location based on where i am.
If i tether and run it from my laptop it show me as being in KS.
Could that be happening because it's a hacked mod?

Could be, I've never used that mod, so I'm not entirely certain if it's what's causing the location errors.

Just got this message after tethering with my laptop for a couple minutes. Never happened before, I used it last maybe a week before. Did T-Mobile start cracking down or something on free tethering? Kind of irritating they never gave me **** before

It should still work fine as long as your data connection is active.

It isn't thought, the data cut out on my chrome book as soon as I got that text, but data on my phone was still good

If you are rooted you will be able to use apps which will allow you to use tethering although T-Mobile disabled it.

This is my APN settings page. I have T-Mobile but the APN always defaults to the METROPCS one. It works fine but I have slower speeds and less LTE availability than when I manually switch to the T-Mobile one... I'm on Paranoid Android. My mom's nexus 5 is still stock and has only the T-Mobile one, but my dad's phone, running Cyanogenmod 11 Installer Edition has the MetroPCS one... Why is it there only in the custom ROMs? And how do I set the T-Mobile one as default?
Thanks!

Remove the APN and it won't set it to it.
Is there anything to worry about if I delete the MetroPCS APN?

There shouldn't be, unless you're actually using MetroPCS.
