I'm not going to be so bold as to try to set this up myself. I know it's been done for several other things like the moto x bootloader. Anyway, I'm just asking if we want to get a bounty going for getting true moto x style touchless control working on the nexus 5. According to the Jerry on the Android Central Podcast, the hardware is there it's just that Google chose to use it for other things. What say you developers!!! I'll donate!!!
Though I'm not setting up an actual account (not sure how), I will track the pledges. PM me if I get too far behind.
Pledges: ($100 Total)
poke_n_pda: $20
PMentior: $10
Beachbum2049: $10
thefsfempire: $20
Techno79: $20
sarshadd: $20
I'd pledge a donation/bounty for this too.
Would love to see this feature on Nexus5
Will definitely chip in a bit
I'd chip in!
If everyone lists ammounts (unofficial till we get something set up) I'll try to keep the main post updated with names and ammounts.

Really disappointed Google didn't even give us the option. Does anyone know if the software required for this to work is something Motorola created specifically for their device(s)?
To add a little extra info, Qualcomm even demo voice activation on their Snapdragon 800 page: http://www.qualcomm.com/snapdragon/processors/800 (see the video "Technology that listens to you").
I'm in for $20
Posting to mark where I've compiled to.
Also, now that this has evolved a bit, can a mod remove the "?" from the title and move this to a more appropriate forum?
i'll contribute $20.

There is a small discussion on what it would take to make it work, and it is no small task. Even for a big company.

Qualcomm here confirms that tech is only available to OEMs. Samsung is the only one who implemented it so far. The rest is probably going to keep it under the wraps and release entirely new phone which is going to be OEM-ized Nexus (LG G3?) in the new "chassis" and they'll charge your arm and a leg for this "brand new, revolutionary tech".
I think I've seen this business model somewhere before.

I think HTC are beginning to get worried about the negative press over the One series.
Had a call from HTC customer service today in response to a survey I filled in recently.
Basically I slated them and their response to my support call.
I asked them a specific question about their new Bluetooth audio dongle and they gave me some crap generic response about how not all phones have the same Bluetooth functionality (my request had nothing to do with phones merely the specification of the dongle).
Anyway I didn't pick up because the number was 'unknown' but they left a very detailed message and seemed very keen to get a resolution (apparently ;-)).
What do you reckon? Call back and hurl abuse???

What do you guys do for a living? No company intentionally does things that aren't in the best interest of their customers. Big multi-billion dollar (pound, euro) companies can't turn on a dime. At least in the U.S., my experience with HTC so far has been light years better than Samsung. The fact that HTC sent you a survey (which they pay for) means they do care about what their customers think. And I guarantee you whatever their response is it in no way has anything to do with the *****ing taking place on XDA.

You guys really need to get lives as making a piece of electronic kit the focal point of your existence is just plain scary.

threadstarter si trying to get the attention of HTC for what? the fact that they made the effort to call you back with regards to your survey means that they have good customer service. and you wanted to "hurl abuse?" imo HTC doesnt need customers like you.
If you got time, I'd call back and actually tell them what you didn't like and how they should've handled it.
The fact is that companies like HTC pay these survey companies to study these things, collect customer feedback so that later on HTC can process it and work on improving their image/products.
How efficient that is - that's another debate. But I really think you need to use this opportunity to make your voice heard.
At the very least, you'll feel vented =)

What's the holdup and what can we do about it?
It's been pointed out that as the owners of this device it's up to us to enforce the GPL.
Does anyone know how to go about applying pressure to HTC?
Anyone a member of EFF.org? I'm getting sick of feeling like HTC's bastard child.
Yeah, WTH.
I feel there's gotta be a reason. They can't just be ignoring us out of laziness... can they? I think I read somewhere that they could take up to 180 days, which seems ridiculous. It's only been 70 or something like that. In Canada anyway... it was released on 4/20.
I guess would could bombard them with phone calls and emails, but I'm sure that won't make much difference.

Surely AT&T has something to do with it, and if that's the case, a letter from xda isn't likely to move them.
Also, they aren't yet in breach, yet, right? The phone hasn't been out two months.

their typical canned response is they release within 60-90 days of device release. We're over 60 and approaching 90 for the Rogers phone
Considering AT&T had HTC lock down the bootloader, I'm sure they have also asked them to hold out on releasing source for as long as they possibly can. That is the only explanation I can think of.

that doesn't matter. AT&T is not in control of enforcement of GPL. They don't own the code in question. AT&t isn't the culprit here I'm sure of it.
Samsung has always been much faster with source code release.

Well, we're all just speculating here. I'm just saying... AT&T is the only carrier to have them lock the BL ... and they've got the weight to lean on HTC to hold the source as long as possible.
Samsung has leverage HTC does not, as the Galaxy line is in enough demand that they don't need to give in to these kinds of requests.
Okay. I was going to open a new thread about this. But this is easier. Plus no new crazy thread. Subjects would be the same.
I do have a lawyer already on this. You can pm me for stuff if you want it I don't want to get his offices flooded. He wrote a lot of the commerce laws and sales laws the state of California follows today. He's also on the commerce board here in California.
The reason why my lawyer is on this is because of AT&T and their crap between a supervisor/manager and I.
Through a discovery phase;
HTC and AT&T know and are working on the SIM card issue. Yellow screen LCD display (sharps fault). The phone is Gorilla Glass. Not gorilla glass 2. And source will be released 4th of July weekend.
There's little bits of info I know that's proprietary which I can't publically post but is nice to know. Such as a device refresh time with AT&T on the one X**.

I got really pissed and sent them this, I believe it is my 7th "comment" to them. I would have made it longer but I ran out of charachters. Does anyone know where I can talk to someone from HTC directly? I need to vent and/or use some choice words.
Anyway, here is the "comment"
I'm sick of HTC trying to dance around this issue. Tell me why this site was created. It certainly is not to give developers and the modding community what they want. If you did that, there would be kernel source code for devices such as the HTC One XL. I am a kernel developer and I own the HTC One XL. I bought this device, thinking that I could create custom kernels for it, and I would learn more about it. I bought this device, knowing that HTC would post the source code, unlike some of your competitors. So far that has not happened. It has been almost two months since the HTC One XL was released.
What am I looking for, you ask? I am looking for HTC to uphold its promise that they would aid the modding community in whatever way possible. I have time and time again seen the response 90-120 days, but I know that it isn't true. There is nothing stopping you from releasing the source now. Give me a definite answer. When will it be released? All the community wants is a definite answer.

Only problem is that the One XL was released more than two months ago.
My dad's going to India to visit family, and a cousin asked to see if I could find someone selling a used Nexus 4. Or something that had a bad ESN but was unlocked, so that he could still use it in India.
During my search, I came across an ad on Craigslist..where a guy is selling a Nexus 5...says it's unlocked and will not work here but will work elsewhere in the world.
So I asked him if it had a bad esn, and he said No, it's disabled by Google.
I use an iPhone and I'm not sure what that means...I did a lot of searching and came across this site.
And the only place I saw "disabled nexus" being referred to, was with people who had their nexus phones stolen during delivery...and Google then disabled the phone and refunded the money.
So, I'm faced with a moral dilemma that the phone could have been stolen OR the guy himself lied to Google about it and got a refund and is now trying to make some money.
But the price is good...and I'd really like to buy it.
So..my question is... Will a new unlocked Nexus 5 that has been disabled/deactivated by Google, work in India?
Or would the deactivation be worldwide? Because no point getting a good price, if the phone won't work!
I really don't know where to turn to.
I'd appreciate the help.
thanks.
The point of disabling a device is making it useless. Why would it work anywhere? What's the price? The price on a brand new one is already low enough, how low can this be? If it's too good to be true, it is.

The reason I posted that question..was because I don't know what "disabled" means. At first I thought, it meant like having a bad esn.
But if it means turning the phone into a brick that won't start or operate, then that's that.
The price is $300 for a 32gb Nexus.

I was just talking with a Moto rep, to check my order. And I asked about being able to change the backs. They put me on hold for a minute or 2 in order to confirm. And they came back and told me YES the backs will be changeable. They don't sell separate backs now, but may in the future.
I never believe an over the phone agent. They can make so many mistakes, and sometimes don't know the specifications of what the company is selling. They could be referring to the Moto X Play, or could have been just trying to get you off of the line. I'm not saying either of those are the case in the situation, but I won't believe them until I have solid proof.
I talked to an agent that said neither a bumper nor the turbo charger will be available with the phone even though that's been proved otherwise. I don't doubt that the backs aren't changeable if it's damaged, but that's something they'd have to do. It doesn't look like the backs are freely interchangeable however.
Yeah reps really know nothing. Most of us on here will know about stuff than them lol.

I know phone reps become less reliable when taken off script .
But we were talking about my own order, so we clearly were not talking about the Play Edition and given they took some time to check. I just want to hope they are correct. And they could be.

TL;DR I can't stand Samsung and my note any longer, anyone else feel the same way?
As I sit here looking at my note 5 and all the accessories I have for it, probably 10 cases, several tempered glass screen protector's, level on Bluetooth headset, 2 level on wired headsets, 2 Samsung qi chargers, most of which hasn't even been used and I find myself hating it all. I prefer Nexus devices yet I thought I could handle Samsung again, I was wrong. I can't lol. I still owe on the phone else it would be gone, am I the only one? Anyone else just want out from Samsung?
Not really whinning, I got myself into this mess and eventually will get out of it but the thought that I may not be alone has me intrigued. I have always enjoyed compiling my own builds and picking what I like when running AOSP, something I knew wasn't going to happen with the note but none the less, I miss it. I prefer stock Android, again, my fault for thinking it wouldn't get to me like it has and also lack of updates, even security updates. The phone has its pluses, no question and has an awesome screen.. Just not enough for me anymore.

Absolutely true, if the phone was paid off or I could afford to pay it off I would go that route. I can't right now, I owe around 500 on it, they sell for less and I would then need to replace it with another phone for around the same amount. Nothing I can do right now, more or less just frustrated and wanted to complain lol.

Did I mention I also got every color keyboard they offered to go with it? What was I thinking.

The accessories were given to me from Samsung, part of the promotion's for buying the phones. They sent me the Bluetooth version of the headset as they were out of stock on the regular ones, I purchased 2 notes and an s6 edge +.
The cases and screen protector's came from amz trader, have maybe 5 bucks in them all total.
You do not have to understand this post, don't have to agree with it yet you feel the need to comment that you don't understand the point, ironic no? This is the general section for the note 5, I am posting my thoughts on the phone after 4 months of using it, I am over it and made a mistake on buying it.

What I don't understand is someone buying a device they obviously wouldn't be happy with then coming to write a post about how they unhappy with it.
The whole point of my over the top analogy was to draw attention to the fact that you bought something you wouldn't like, and surprise surprise you don't like it.
Usually I don't see much purpose in posting the obvious.
Now if you were looking for ways to like it then I could see a point. No one said you couldn't post. I just shared my opinion on it.
It's not ironic at all. It's just how forums and social networks work.

It's the advertising hype train, got a buncha yall on the s7. See those shiny new devices and run out and buy them, advertising so good it makes you ignore what you want in a device for whatever they are giving you.
Happens to everyone.

I've tried liking it, actually thought I could like it when I purchased it else I wouldn't have in the first place. I was wrong and recognize that now, was simply asking if any others felt the same way, you know, discussions on forums and social networks and all... that's how they work.
Not going to get into a back and forth with you over it, just seeing how others feel about the phone after having it for a while.
Your edit, dead on..

I'll say it does suck being stuck with something you aren't happy with. Maybe consider trading it in at best buy to pay off the EIP and get a nexus. See what kind of dent their trade in will put on your EIP. I'm thinking it's at about 200 to 250 on trade in though.

I'm in the same boat.
I wanted the S7 edge to be my new phone but the locked bootloader forced me to upgrade to a note 5 for root.
The Nexus 6P has serious build quality issues. It literally folds when a phone shouldn't.
I could trade in my Note 5 to T Mobile for 242 and that would leave me owing $170 EIP.
What else is there?
The LG G5 has some serious build quality issues (small space between chin and screen, it's plastic, lower quality screen, heat issues, etc).
Compared to what's out there, the Note 5 is the best of the rest less the S7 edge.
I really miss my S4.
Come on guys, the man made a thread to complain .... let him do so along with those who want to. Coming in here to force them to see it your way is not going to fly, and will just lead to arguements that will take away from the purpose of this thread....as against it as you may be.
He is a note owner, and he is stating his opinion just as you all have about how much you love it a 5 years after its release (yes im over exaggerating)
