[READ] Found ad-hoc teather method?

hi all! I've found a topic where all people was talking about the wifi tethering with ad-hoc connection using Motorola Xoom..with the help of some XDA's guys, they were able to connect a phone to xoom using ad-hoc spot. So this method can be applied also to the Transformer? i think that - if the OS is the same for each android tablet - is possible to mod the same file to the same mode, or not?

The same method certainly worked on Acer Iconia A500 tabs. I did it to mine before swapping it out for a Transformer. AFAIK it was the same wpa_supplicant file from the Xoom forums here on XDA that I pushed to my Iconia and it worked well. Might give it a bash in a bit.

So if this is possibile all ppl that are still using Wm6.5 will be able to tethter them 3G connection without any problems on the TF? do you remember if you encountered some trouble on iconia after this mod? I don't believe that Android doesn't still have the possibility to connect with other devices without the use of infrastucture mode. (big handicap )

No, it didn't cause any problems. Just make sure you follow the instructions. Set the permissions on wpa_supplicant properly otherwise you will break your wifi. Ofc, you will need to have root. Good luck.

We did this same trick to allow ad-hoc on the elocity a7... worked like a charm. Not rooted yet to try this though myself.

Well idk if this is helpful, but ive been tethering my Droid X to my TF via bluetooth and works flawlessly, must admit it makes my DX slow and crappy but while im tethering im not really gonna be using my phone. I like to think it saves battery too, correct me if im wrong on the wifi vs bluetooth battery consumption.

Mine connects to my GalaxyS with no special tricks.

thank you to the OP I've been trying so hard to get tethering from my verizon Galaxy S (&^#$ verizon) I didn't want to have to shell out $20 more bucks for data when I go on a road trip later.

somehow it wont connect to the hotspot created by my nokia e71 & e72, old phone i know... does it have to be an android phone?

Maybe you have to apply this mod to the Transformer for enjoy the new tether feature have you tried it?

ah yes, i havent understand about the ad hoc problems earlier... now that i've read all the others ad hoc network related, i get it
so yea, the questions i have now are the same as anybody else's... will there be any updates that fixes this instead of having to self-patch? too bad if it doesnt, cuz i love my nokia e71

The android ad hoc wifi issue is quite well documented on the net - google code
Don't think google have mentioned anything about putting in support for it, but the wpa_supplicant hacks are used for lots of older devices that 'can't see' ad hoc and seem to cover it pretty well for root users.
Most newer phones, especially android devices, now generate tether points in infrastructure mode - hence why some of the posters above with newer phones do not need to use the wpa mod.
Looks like you will have to root and mod your transformer or get a phone that generates 'infrastructure' and say bye bye to your e71

i use wildfire s. i dont get sufficient internet data for my android phone. i tried connecting to wifi network in my building my they are protected .....is there any trick or hack so that i connect to the wifi protected networks through my android phone? if there is any trick plz explain cause i am a noob xD

If it's WEP, yes there are tools on PCs that can crack it. Unsure of whether you're able to on your mobile. No doubt illegal in your country to hack someone else's WIFI though so won't go into how-to. I'm sure you have enough brains to Google though.

Let me rephrase:
I don't have enough money for a bigger data service plan.
I want to steal it from someone else but they prevented me from doing that by protecting their network. Can you tell me how to break someones network encryption because i am to lazy to figure it out on my own.

There are lots of apps that "can" hack protected wifi spot. Though they have lot's of good reviews and high rates they don't work for me(( Any thoughts? Am I the only one who has this problem?

[HOW TO] BackTrack 5 for Android ~ Linux Fans ~

Please don't use this to do any illegal activity. It is meant to test your own network to see how secure your setup is.
It works great. I realized how weak my WEP password was and switched to a much more secure WPA 2
Must be Rooted, have Superuser, Android VNC and Busybox!
First download the zip file here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M6YCKZLR
Then extract it, and put it in a new folder "bt5", on your phones internal /sdcard
In a terminal emulator, type “su” <enter>, “cd /sdcard/bt5″ <enter>
Now type, “sh bt” <enter>
If all is well you’ll now be running BackTrack 5 on your Android device; you can access it from VNC if you said “Yes” to the prompt asking if you wanted a VNC session
To actually see Backtrack, run a VNC viewer from the market (many are free), then connect to host “127.0.0.1″, port “5901″, password “root”
I just stumbled upon this searching the internet, I do not take credit for this or take any responsibility if you mess up your phone.
As long as you follow these directions, everything should work smooth, and if you dont like it, you can simply delete the files.

Backtrack is a penetration and network security test suite. Please don't do anything with this unless you're on a home network or are otherwise authorized to do so. This could very easily get you into trouble if you don't know what you're doing.

WEP is trivial to break. I gave a talk in my senior seminar class and demoed breaking wep passwords. With packet objection to drive traffic across the network, wep is breakable in minutes. its been officially deprecated by the IEEE, no one should use wep.

Right. Using WEP is equivalent to having 123456 or abcdef as password.

Problem with WEP is that its cipher is inherently insecure. It relies on the RC4 stream cipher, and it can be broken with 50% probability after only 40k packets captured. Using packet injection, you can generate 40k packets in <1m. Collecting 85k packets gets you a solution probability of 95%, so figure it takes about 2m to generate that much traffic. On modern computers, aircrack-ng can compute the key in ~5m, from the beginning of the attack. WEP will only stop a random passerby from jumping on your wireless. It's not a real barrier to any dedicated attacker. Once they're on your network, it's also trivial to set up a man-in-the-middle through ARP poisoning and then your data is all compromised. It's not as straight-forward as you would think, which I would consider to be a good thing. Depending on the network's security protocols, (WPA, or WEP, or WPA2) you have different scripts on BT5 you have to run for each one, and depending on the complexity of the password, could take hours, days, etc, if the router is newer with anti-brute force software that doesn't allow repeated connects, could take months.

The tools you are looking for are aircrack-ng and reaver. They come packaged with Backtrack 5 R3.

No one here will teach you how to crack wi-fi passwords as doing so is illegal and in that makes it against XDA rules. All the tools here are for Educational purposes only.

Hey everyone, so my 3g internet expired which caused me to use my neighbor's open wifi, and i was wondering if i could make my phone some sort of "hotspot" that uses wifi internet rather than mobile networking with my phone.
Just so i dont have to move my wii closer to the wall to have a stable connection
Does anyone catch my drift here? If so please tell me i just want to strengthen my neighbors wifi signal and use his internet for my console.

You would have to find a way to bridge the Wi-Fi connection with a USB/BT tether, which frankly I don't think can be done and would either way require a second device.

There is no way to do that as of now.......maybe if connectify had a platform for mobile like they do with PCs

I've had this wish for weeks, and I chanced upon an android app called fqrouter2.
Its available on the Google Play Store. It works; allows a Wifi connection to be shared over a wifi connection!

Not the dumbest idea... to use bluetooth. But the data rate is limited to 2.1 Mbit/s and sharing for multiple devices may or may not work.

Edit: Tested with a Samsung Galaxy S4 acting as repeater. A whopping 0.6 Mbit/s data rate, multiple devices are possible though. But they have to share these 0.6.
