[READ] Found ad-hoc teather method? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all! I've found a topic where all people was talking about the wifi tethering with ad-hoc connection using Motorola Xoom..with the help of some XDA's guys, they were able to connect a phone to xoom using ad-hoc spot. So this method can be applied also to the Transformer? i think that - if the OS is the same for each android tablet - is possible to mod the same file to the same mode, or not?

The same method certainly worked on Acer Iconia A500 tabs. I did it to mine before swapping it out for a Transformer. AFAIK it was the same wpa_supplicant file from the Xoom forums here on XDA that I pushed to my Iconia and it worked well. Might give it a bash in a bit.

So if this is possibile all ppl that are still using Wm6.5 will be able to tethter them 3G connection without any problems on the TF? do you remember if you encountered some trouble on iconia after this mod? I don't believe that Android doesn't still have the possibility to connect with other devices without the use of infrastucture mode. (big handicap )

No, it didn't cause any problems. Just make sure you follow the instructions. Set the permissions on wpa_supplicant properly otherwise you will break your wifi. Ofc, you will need to have root. Good luck.

We did this same trick to allow ad-hoc on the elocity a7... worked like a charm. Not rooted yet to try this though myself.

Well idk if this is helpful, but ive been tethering my Droid X to my TF via bluetooth and works flawlessly, must admit it makes my DX slow and crappy but while im tethering im not really gonna be using my phone. I like to think it saves battery too, correct me if im wrong on the wifi vs bluetooth battery consumption.

Confirmed working with my Hero that only generates ad hoc
Will reboot to make sure it persists, but looks good.
Was going to look for a modded wpa_supplicant. Thanks for the post.
UPDATE: works after reboot. Posting via tether now

thank you to the OP I've been trying so hard to get tethering from my verizon Galaxy S (&^#$ verizon) I didn't want to have to shell out $20 more bucks for data when I go on a road trip later.

somehow it wont connect to the hotspot created by my nokia e71 & e72, old phone i know... does it have to be an android phone?

The android ad hoc wifi issue is quite well documented on the net - google code
Don't think google have mentioned anything about putting in support for it, but the wpa_supplicant hacks are used for lots of older devices that 'can't see' ad hoc and seem to cover it pretty well for root users.
Most newer phones, especially android devices, now generate tether points in infrastructure mode - hence why some of the posters above with newer phones do not need to use the wpa mod.
Looks like you will have to root and mod your transformer or get a phone that generates 'infrastructure' and say bye bye to your e71

Why don't you use the stock htc app with the fixed APN (wap.cingular....) ?

If you are already rooted you can use a wifi tether app like Wireless Tether, you don't have to mess with PDA net (PDAnet is great if you are not rooted). I tried Barnacle but had trouble getting my Mac to join the adhoc network it creates. Rather than mess with it too much I put on Wireless Tether and it worked Great.

I can second Barnacle WiFi and also use the stock Mobile Hotspot.
If you are rooted you do not need any program for tether.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980591
Use the referenced APN and you will have tethering available......
I second the wireless tether especially if you have your unlimited data still. Its stupid to pay for it twice

If rooted it also works to remove all entitlement apns from the APN database in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Do you think there will ever be a wifi app that does not require rooting. I had to downgrade back to pda.net. It works but I already miss the wifi app I used for years on WM 6.5.
I believe most custom roms allow tethering without adding it to your plan.
I asked about coredroid in another thread, and I got conflicting reports though.
If you are already rooted, just flash a custom ROM. then you don't need an app and you will also have a hotspot. My favorite is Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 but if you want to keep Sense UI, try Android Revolution HD or CoreDroid or some other Sense based ROM. And Congrats on your escape from under Steve Jobs's thumb =D

yes by changing the APN you can enable wifi tethering without root , ive done it many times on un-rooted phones ,just dont use it to much or it will be noticed and good ole at&t will add the package (not sure about other carriers)

[Q] Using a USB cellular modem with Xoom WiFi

Does anyone know if it's possible to use a USB cellular modem such as the Verizon LTE card (pantech u290) with the USB port on the Xoom WiFi? That would be a really cool ability if it were possible.
I imagine that it COULD work given the necessary drivers and tools. The device would have to be unlocked and rooted, and you would need to load a boot.img with the capability already in place. Beyond USB storage, a driver would have to be ported/written for a device like that.
Given that Verizon is already the mobile data sponsor of the Xoom, and are offering LTE antenna upgrades once its launched in the Xoom, they might have a problem with that.
But yes, it is possible in theory.
The xoom definitely detects a UML290 when it is plugged in via a xoom host cable. This should be very feasible to get working and I'll be looking into it.

There's no difference between using a laptop with an external radio and using a tablet with an external radio. It's not like you're bypassing charges or anything.
If anything, Verizon would be against xooms having a wifi radio at all. But they'd certainly prefer you to use a 3g dongle (which would make them money) than using just wifi.

The problem is that someone will have to take the SDK and drivers from the USB modem manufacturer and adapt them to the Xoom. This is way beyond my skill set unfortunately.
Okay someone must know how to do this. My friend has the Acer Iconia and he was able to get it to recognize a Novatel USB760 modem for Verizon. Some directions are over in the Acer Iconia forum. It running Honeycomb and similar hardware sure someone could get the Xoom working with this.
I'm quite interested in this as well. Is there any guidance on where to look to do this? I am a software developer, although I don't have any experience at building software for the android, but I could certainly come up with something.
the SDK's are usually available on the web site of the modem manufacturers. The big ones are Pantech, Novatel, and Sierra Wireless. They all should have Linux SDK info that should be portable to Android. I'm thinking that if someone wrote an app for this, they could make quite a bit of money selling it on the Android market
Can't you buy something that accepts the USB modem like a router of some sort?
Better yet wouldn't you be able to get a Linux driver for the aircard and hack that some way?

This won't help you get on the Verizon network, but it may help for people with GSM carriers, and may lead in the right direction
Huawei 3G WCDMA Modem SUPPORT
It's for the viewsonic, but all the 10.1 tabs pack about the same hardware, and it's all Android, or rather linux at this level. You guys might have some luck getting the Huawei sticks working
the carrier's can't detect what is attached to the USB modems. As long as the USB stick is activated with a legit data plan, it should work fine. the key is getting the android drivers together and working using the linux SDKs provided by the USB modem mfgs.
Also...I'm opening up a pool for a donation to any developer that will work on this. I'm putting $50 in.
I would also be willing to donate to get this working.
After a lot of researching, i was very sad i had the wifi only version but after that, i noticed that it was the best option, One Data Plan in your Huawei e5 hot spot and enjoy the connection of simult four devices in the same data plan - all on the go, i have hd2 "Androided" and the xoom wifi.
Enjoying less monthly charges for the hd2 and sharing the xoom. i even though of tethering from my phone but phone data plans are much higher than Data Only SIMs.

This doesn't do me much good unfortunately...still open to paying someone to develop this...or you could build it and launch in the app market. Support for the common ATT, Sprint, and Verizon modems would probably get LOTS of buyers including me. I'd bet there's a good market on all the wifi only tablets for this type of work

No Ad-HOC in leaked 3.1

Since I haven't seen it mentioned in any of the rather deep 3.1 threads, as far as I can tell the 3.1 leaked firmware has not added ad-hoc networking support. Tested using what I have here, HTC Touch Pro 2 using the built in WiFi router, my NookColor CM7 and the Transformer.
TP2 advertises the network, NookColor sees it just fine but the Transformer's got nothing.
Just thought I'd save you all flipping through hundreds of posts to find out it's not working yet, at least in my configuration.

Ad-hoc is just a method of sharing an internet connection locally without a traditional infrastructure associated with it. Most phones now a day's don't use it which is why you're EVO can chat it up with your Transformer. Specific network configurations and devices demand it though such as my Windows Mobile 6.5 Touch Pro 2 that only seems to want to advertise the network in Ad-Hoc mode and won't enable bluetooth tethering as far as I can tell.
There was some speculation that it might be added in this release but it seems there was no such luck. I've been trying to hold off on rooting until we had a stable 3.1 build from Asus since it doesn't seem like something I'll want to do over and over.

Yup! Go team SERO! Besides, the TP2 really isn't too bad as a phone. It get the internet well enough for me to look stuff up when I'm on the road, GPS works dandy, texting is great with the keyboad built in. I'd rather have android and all the aps that come with it but with the money I save I can buy a new high end tablet every year or two so it's not too painful... until I try and tether the two at least.

Wireless Tether through Infrastructure (Not ad-hoc)

A reboot as ALL that was needed to solve my issue.
Make sure you've got a ROOTED phone.. Mine was rooted, running this kernel, and this ROM..
Download Android Wifi-Tether 3.2 Beta2 apk
Install it
Run it
Menu-Settings
Change Device-Profile
Select Samsung Fascinate
Change Setup-Method
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)
Back to main screen
Start Tethering
Voila! You have infrastructure mode tethering, instead of adhoc which is the usual deal. THis is important to folks like me, who run honeycomb tablets like my Asus Transformer, or the Xoom, and need infrastructure wireless networks to tether to.
edit: updated new tether app.
I use wireles tether and it works fine for me its adhoc and I posted it somewherr in here hang on.

I came from the Droid, and the Droid 2, where I coulld tether via bluetooth, however this is not the case with the Charge. Newer 3.0 version was released and the older one was removed. Steps still work on Beta1 release. Thanks OP!
Don't enable access control, it doesn't work and it bugs out the program and only way I could get devices to connect again was to clear data in app manager and redo my settings at next relaunch.
If you change the date temporarily back to may sometime to get the stock app to open, adjust your settings as needed. Change the date back to auto and download elixr from the market. Create a 1x1 widget, tap the x, select wireless ap, and create.....watch the magic happen and as far as I know its infrastructure.

You can do that Airsushi. It wont be perfect though. I am running an Asus Transformer that runs Android 3.1, and I rooted it and installed the patch to see ad-hoc. Now I use the standard tethering and have no issues with tethering. Its much more stable than trying to use infastructure mode on the charge.
But for ease, this method is much less complicated. but less stable.
Thanks op. Works great

Which wireless tethering app do you use?

I have never found one, PSP/NDS probably have the same issue with connecting to Ad Hoc networks. I had to root tablet and edit a file to make it work with A500.
Open Garden seems to have a better pass through for speed, used Wireless Tether for quite some time with no issues.
I pay enough to Vz since I never go over 5G a month even with tethering I don't feel bad at all.
