[Q] Any way to backup/restore Launcher Homescreen icons from Nexus 4 to Nexus 5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any way to backup/restore Launcher Homescreen icons from Nexus 4 to Nexus 5?
It seems they are incompatible, so my usual apps like Helium Backup and MyBackup Pro just result in nothing.
(It beggars belief Google haven't sorted out a decent backup like the iPhone has had for years :silly: )

If you're using something like Nova Launcher, they usually have a backup option with the launcher that saves a file to the SD card that you can transfer. If not, or on stock launcher, then not likely beyond titanium backup or something.

Thanks. Anyone know if Titanium can do this with the stock launcher to my lovely new Nexus 5, without root?

No, Titanium can't do much at all without root. Especially since the stock Launcher is a system app. Also, the launcher on the Nexus 5 is an entirely different application. So you wouldn't be able to restore your layout to that. You'd have to restore the 4.3 launcher from the Nexus 4 to the 5. I'm not sure how well that would work, probably not a good idea. I'd just take the time to set up your layout again and have the peace of mind that it all works correctly .
Edit: One thing you could do is install Nova Launcher on your Nexus 4 (looks like stock launcher but with more features), then Nova Launcher can import your stock launcher layout. Then you could backup the layout within Nova Launcher's settings. Then copy the backup file from your SD Card (in some nova launcher folder) to your Nexus 5, install Nova Launcher, and then restore. That'd give you a launcher that looks just like stock, laid out for you? Best I can think of.

I wouldn't attempt it even with root...you're not meant to restore system apps

Probably best. The only problem is Nova doesn't yet have the new niceties like swipe left for Google Now and hotword detection. But thanks.

adw ex seems to have wiped out the moto launcher

I just got my atrix 2 today and have rooted it and installed titanium backup.
It seems the default launcher was overwritten by adw ex.
Does someone happen to have an Apk for the moto launcher so I can put it back?
Try an app called Homeswitcher. Will allow you to swap back and forth between any custom launcher and home.
yeah I use homessmack and totally forgot to use it to select my default.
Its fun to be a noob again.
I have homeswitcher installed. when I clear defaults it only lists ADW EX and Go Launcher EX as choices.
If u want it back u have to remove it. All Motorola androids are like that the stock launcher disappears til u uninstall the others. My atix and electrify was the same way

hmm, home switcher worked for me.
there are 2 versions of home switcher, are you sure you installed the right one?
either way, i too had the, cleared defaults and moto launcher still didn't show up problem.
Ok glad to hear this weirdness is normal. Thanks for the replies.
Yeah Moto's home comes right back when you remove ADW. It seems like a courtesy feature. Motohome just goes and hides in a corner and lets other homes do their business without asking if you want it to be default.

[Q] Customise number of homescreen pages

Hi,
My 7.0 Plus has 5 homescreens, but I have 3 of these empty. Is there any way to delete these homescreens? Maybe through installation of a new launcher (I currently have the default one only)?
Any thoughts welcome! Google searching hasn't helped me yet...
3rd party launcher, yes, definetly.
Stock launcher ,no, probably never.
Thanks Chris. Can you recommend one which might do the job?
I use Launcher Pro, the best one out there imo

I was using Launcher Pro on my previous phone/tablets running GB, but found it pretty buggy and not fully supporting Honeycomb.
Switched to Launcher EX, free and superfully featured.

Look on Google for go launcher hd beta. It is specifically designed for tablets.
I use Go Launcher Ex (not Go Launcher HD beta) on my phone and my tablet. I've tried a few others but keep going back to it. Its VERY customizable and super smooth/responsive. I like the Transparency theme for it also.
I tried Go Launcher HD beta, ultimately switched back to Go Launcher Ex. I may switch back once Go Launcher HD is completed, because its still lacking some customization and is a little buggy.

How to disable TouchWiz?

I've been using Apex launcher this week (which is amazing, and imho has tons more options over Nova), and would like to disable TouchWiz. I noticed that TouchWiz does not have a 'disable' option like a lot of other apps do when viewing app details.
I am rooted, but I'd rather not use Titanium Backup since I do not plan on completely removing the app. I just want to disable it like I have been able to do on the Verizon bloatware apps.
Can I simply go into system/app and rename the TouchWiz app?
I've noticed that when I download/install a new app, the phone still tries to add the app to the TouchWiz home screen which I find annoying.

Touchwiz is built into the ROM. The only way to not use Touchwiz is to use AOSP/AOKP or something without TW.

I'm using Apex Launcher as a replacement and would like to disable or freeze TouchWiz without using any new apps like Titanium Backup.

You're still using TouchWiz. You can't NOT use Touchwiz on Stock. Apex is just a launcher. TouchWiz is the entire touch interface. Everything you use is still using TouchWiz.
You remove, freeze, rename, etc. any TW files you will probably brick the device and have to odin back to stock and start all over.

Okay, thanks guys. I guess I misunderstood and though TouchWiz home was just another launcher. I didn't know it was essential to the rom itself.

No worries. TouchWiz Home is just one part of TW, but TW itself is basically the framework added onto Android by Samsung which is part of everything. The only way to not use it is to use AOSP or find another non TouchWiz ROM (not sure if any are out for the S3 yet)
I'm sure you can freeze the launcher and get away with it.
I believe it's "SecLauncher2" or something to that extent. Look for the word "Launcher".
And I'm not responsible if you bootloop

I'm curious, what are the "tons more options" ??
I have seen people post this before but nobody seems to know what these options are.
I used Apex for months in my old Rezound but I prefer Nova in the G3 myself (& I have the paid version of both Apex & Nova) but maybe I'm missing something.
So far, Nova has had every single setting or option that I want so I am really wondering what I am missing??
Nobody yet have balls to ****ing delete or freeze TW to see if it works along Nova...

[Q] Restoring an android desktop

Hi,
I'm jumping between a number of custom lollipop ROMs presently and was wondering if it was possible to restore Android desktop setups with Titanium Backup Pro or command line tools.
If so, how?
Thanks,
hp
Yes, if you restore the data for the launcher app.
Like rootSU said, you can restore launcher data with titanium or if you're like me and use Nova Launcher, it has its own backup/restore options in the settings menu.

Restoring data for the Google Now Launcher & Settings + a reboot did not migrate home screens between xtraslim and foxhound's -- but no big deal, it's a simple setup for me thanks anyhow.

It won't migrate home screens. It will need to be to the same.launcher every time. Although GEL is q bit of an unknown quantity

Would using a launcher other than GEL restore home screens using a titanium backup?

What do you use for backing up Homescreen/HS apps

Merry Holidays all!
Just like the title asks: what do you use for backing up Homescreen/HS apps.
I like to clean wipe for custom Roms and use TiBu for apps/data mostly. I do use it for a couple systems apps, but thats about it. However, no matter what, I can't get my apps and folders restored to Google Launcher/Home screens.
Is there a way?? Thanks

3rd party launchers like Nova or Apex got this function build in and if I am not wrong, if you install Google Launcher afterwards it will ask you to import from other launcher (?), that would be one way. I am not aware of any other.
Google Now Launcher does not allow backup up and restoring of homescreens to storage or from other launchers, at all. Only most other launchers have such functionality.
If you have Xposed, however, the XGELS module (I think it also needs premium via an in-app purchase) lets you backup and restore homescreen data (excluding widgets) of Google Now Launcher to your internal storage. This is the only way.
I was afraid of that. Thank you. Have a great day.

My google now launcher asked me to restore from my home screen (stock android I think) once I installed clean the factory image. It took all folders etc.
Hence not sure if u could load from 3rd party to stock android somehow?

Oh yeah. That's if you have app data synced to Google, then it might sync that too.
But, no way to export/import/store it yourself except with Xposed.

Thanks.. I'll do a sync before a factory reset next time and see how it goes. I've been trying out Nova Launcher too. Strange Google doesn't have this feature built in...
