Mod nav buttons? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to change the nav keys to be smaller and add a menu button?
pretty much all custom ROMs have this, but there aren't any stable ones yet, and I am thinking there might be a framework.res or systemui.apk mod I can make to at least do that much. I hate those big buttons taking up my screen real estate..

I also want to be able to mod this, but it looks like it requires a ROM.

The Nexus 4 had a flashable zip that just modified some framework files I believe that you could flash over stock before this was incorporated into every major ROM.

You could download softkeyz from the play store. It's great for edition the nav keys if your phone is rooted. I use it all the time on my n4.

It'll definitely come, but you're gonna need to be patient. A LOT of people don't even have the phones in their hands yet. Give it a few weeks, let the devs get a chance to work on the phone, and then you'll start seeing the customization options.

Well I'm not looking for spoon feeding. If someone did it for the Nexus 4, just a tip on which files to mod etc..

In jellybean the navbar pngs were in systemui/res/drawable-*dpiHere*
They're named something like
ic_sysbar_home.png iirc.
You could try editing them in Ps and replace the old ones with edited ones.

That's the info I was looking for, I'll go ahead and decompile systemui.apk and go from there.

Interested in this also. If I could just shrink down the size that would be good enough. I had a zip for my ATT LGG2 that did this perfectly. But not sure it will work on N5?

Does Softkeyz allow you to adjust the size of the keys too or just color and arrangement etc?
Thanks

It simply changes the actual image (png file) of the softkey, so if you select an image that is smaller, the softkey will subsequently be smaller.

Honestly i can't remember but i think it allowed custom images so my guess is you can make an image within a size limit and it should be fine if you cant change the size of the standards.
I have set my n4 back to factory for my girlfriend and my n5 doesn't have it on yet so can't check right now.

Softkeyz doesn't appear to support 4.4 yet.
I'll gladly donate to anyone who can shrink down the navbar size on the Nexus 5. And/Or make it transparent on third party launchers. (Nova)
Here's the thread from the LGG2. I doubt it's too hard to do.

Check out Candyshop thread in the Themes section, looks really promising right now.

2.1 black notification bar

With 1.6, I was using a framework.res that had a dark notification bar and simple, clear icons. I think it may have been taken from HTC's phones.
Has anyone made this again for 2.1? I really don't care for the default x10 icons.

Someone posted one in another thread which was different to the original but said it worked, and it did, so took to searching custom rom threads, pulled a few framework-res files, and came across it. As it now uses a 9.png I think you're allowed a little variation in the dimensions.

I was thrown too by it, but yes it's the same principle which can be used with other 9.pngs such as drop down menus and the like, but I've not strayed too far with others as I've done it on a trial and error basis but not had any errors so far, so if you swap a 9 and your phone doesn't boot or you need to reflash don't blame me.

Is there a how to on changing your Sense lock to AOSP?

Title pretty much says it all. I've been hopping from mod to mod, theme to theme, framework to framework to get exactly what I want in my phone aesthetically. I'm using this frame right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12131447&postcount=37210
The guy who ported was kind enough to point me to this AOSP lock that worked, but didn't quite match what I wanted to accomplish. I'm really looking for this lock, and if not then just a straight up AOSP lock.
As I said, I've tried just about every combo possible but everything takes something away that I want to keep. I tried the how to theme thread, and it was a great resource but only offered advice on how to change the png on HTC's lock; something I'm not particularly interested in.
Is there a howto on how to get this accomplished myself? I've looked everywhere, but I can't find anything. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
You can just use root explorer to rename your HTC lockscreen to something else to get the vanilla lock

Do you know which files get accessed when it reverts back to the lockscreen then? I did what you said, and it basically gave me the same version that I linked to before. Even if I can extract the files and alter them myself, I feel like I'll be accomplishing something. I just don't know where it draws from.

Exactly what I needed man, thanks. I pretty much ninjamorphed whatever he had with CM's and it looks great. the only thing I'm missing is the "unlock" text over the bar. I know that's nitpicky, but do I just reopen the sliding tab and print it on there myself?

He wasn't trying to be a ****. It's a very flexible and effective way to change your lock to just about anything including a ton of custom locks. Well worth $1.99 to people who want a high degree of customization and control over their lockscreen.
Why not purchase widgetlock? You can switch between aosp lc and lense lc. Just my opinion

First off, I love your work on this. The whole theme is great, and the only reason I keep trying to Frankenstein this one in particular is because I love the black on-screen notifications over that HTC grey. Unfortunately when I replaced frameworks I bootlooped :-/
@the other two previous to this post: I don't want to do that because its unnecessary. I don't need to spend money on a bandaid when I (with the help of others here) can go into the filesystem and do it myself.

Question + Cool Hint

I finally got my computer working again, so I have some questions regarding rom cooking. Would I need permission to use ayOteddy's "Stock [email protected] Deo Rooted" as a base for my roms. And If I really wanna get into this, some recommendations for ideas even if I dont use them?
ALSO. Its well known that we do not really have a soft lanscape keyboard, no matter what keyboard used, right? Well that's wrong. Its been awhile since Ive used this keyboard, I used it on my old Optimus T actually, however, the keyboard known as "Hacker's Keyboard" has an option to always view the landscape keyboard even if a hardware keyboard input is present. Just thought you all would like to know that I figure my little discovery could be useful to you all ^_^ Welcome.
*** One more thing, does anyone know ways I can change the settings options and navigation + links? Like, the Theme Settings space for example?

I actually used KJ2 for TigerFusion without permission. I figured since ay0teddy retired long ago, he would not reply to my PM. I think as long as you give credit to him it should be fine.
I recommend using ASimmons Theme Injector if you want to port over a theme. Just remember that the Sidekick 4G uses hdpi. What I did for Froyo Iced Up was just change one letter in the apk.....the m in mdpi to h. If you don't do this, the result will be a brick. I had to use Odin to flash back to stock....lol.
And remember that the Bali kernel with keylogger removed will only work on KJ2. You can actually extract the zip and copy the contents from the kernel_flasher folder right into the update folder of your kitchen project.
Thanks for the keyboard app recommendation. I'll definitely try it out! Good luck with the rom cooking. :good:

Re: Thanks RicAndroid I was actually gonna theme the rom from each file individually though ^_^ and I could also use some help with another thing. How do I get the extended power menu? 0.0
Hats off to ayoteddy, sduvick, and krylon for the work they did. When all is said and done, those are really the people that pushed things forward and got the Sidekick 4g a couple useful 3rd party kernels.
As I recall, ayoteddy shared his stock deodexed rom so other people could have some fun cooking up their own custom. So, just credit him and move on. I don't think he'll be upset at all.
Make sure to also credit krylon and sduvick in anything you do. If you dig back into the forum, you'll see that they worked together.

That was way tricky. You need to add three pngs to the drawable-hdpi folder after you decompile the framework-res.apk.... reboot, reboot_ recovery and download. Then edit the strings.xml folder.... after that, it gets pretty hairy. I'll send you a pm with all the steps needed to configure the android.policy.jar file.
Oh, and thanks for the advice orange808!

Dude...I just thought of something. Why don't you make a custom Key Lime Pie theme? Just use the various images found on the net for inspiration....maybe you can make a kind of CM theme based on yellow and green...just a thought!
As for TouchWiz....ugh...I personally hate it. Why not go with Go Launcher? It is a bit on the hefty side but is very theme-able!

That is a great idea not gonna draw conclusions yet, but the whole green color seems to look nice on the SK. And I used to love Go Launcher, but it became so chock-ful of ads and weird buying with credits and just....it became a bit too much I think? I might poke around and try to find an older version of ADW and just break the market link so it doesnt upgrade to the new one. Which by the way, I wanted to suggest in case Holo Launcher starts to get old for you, it looks alot like the ICS update, spare the icons. But with a theme installed its gotta be the best ICS launcher I've seen yet IMO anyway.

Learning
Well, I tryed to set up the EPM for Sidekick from scratch. No go, it's different than a lot of other devices it seems. Could anyone direct me with this a little? Please? It would be awesome because I really want to learn some while building this.
I know I have a lot of questions, but believe me, I appreciate it more than you know and I love the community for all its provided help. I have one more:
Which file happens to be for the notification background? Have tried a few but see no differences :/
It is amazing how PDT and ayoteddy got all of this working. I tried editing the classes.dex file on my own, but it seems that the Sidekick 4G is a freak mutation of some sort.
I wound up taking a shortcut and used GenericGinger's android.policy.jar file. I edited the GlobalActions.smali file using Notepad ++ and added the reboot info from the public.xml located in the framework.

You could root and then use a build prop editor to change the density. Or you could wait until roms start appearing (PA, etc). You know, give it time, it should blossom

Found my perfect setting of 400. Didn't really like the huge icons by default, and 320 was way too low for me. 400 suits me fine, and replicates roughly my nexus4.
Don't know why Google changed this personally. Never changed DPI before, is there anything I should be aware of now I have done so?

Google changed it because the screen is higher resolution. The only things to be aware of are the possibility of Play Store having compatibility issues. If you get that, just return to stock DPI, update apps, and go back to what you like. The other thing is that it affects everything, so some apps might change their interface as a result.

If the screen resolution is higher, why could I fit less on my desktop than my Nexus4? I use Dashclock and it chops off data that was always visible on my N4. Seemed like a backwards step.

[Request] navbar height

Hello,
could anyone please make some navbar mods.
Like 36 dp or 32dp, in my opinion the navbar is just too huge.
Thanks.
Depends on what ROM you have as they're not universal. Need framework, systemui apk as well as a deodexed rom.
oh sry.
For stock rom
Edit:
I already tried it myself, but i cant get i to work. So it would be awesome if someone could make a 36dp version for stock.

Changing sizes of navbar is easy. I've done it in the past. There aren't much custom ROMs at the moment, only choice that I would choose is SlimKat but still on stock for myself. So if you guys want it done then attach systemui.apk, framework-res.apk and I can do it.

Stock DPI is WAY too high on this device. You don't get to take advantage of the great resolution on the screen unless you reduce it. I highly recommend doing this as well.

Thanks, but doesn't that change the entire screen LCD density? I was just looking to alter the navbar height

Yeah, it does. I wish I knew how to change just the nav bar . I'm just praying that PA comes out with their stuff really soon.

Changing sizes of navbar is easy. I've done it in the past. There aren't much custom ROMs at the moment, only choice that I would choose is SlimKat but still on stock for myself. So if you guys want it done then attach systemui.apk, framework-res.apk and I can do it.

Is there a way to completely remove the Nav Bar. I do worded an app from the play store but it made my phone freak out really bad.
Nexus ONE
There is 1 custom rom right now that has adjustable nav bar height. Released today I think. Not sure if it will disappear if you set it to 0%, but you can shrink it down. 60% works well for me.
