[Q] Need some thoughts here- Phone does not fully charge - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hoping that someone has an idea on this one. My wife's SGS4G suddenly developed a charging issue. It charges very slowly, and seems to top out at about 75% (if I charge overnight, it will actually have less than it did when I placed it on the charger, and Battery under settings shows it has been on battery for 5 days, even though it has been placed on the charger). She was on ICS AOKP when this started. I figured that maybe it was something in the cache, so I was going to upgrade her to 4.3 anyway, and figured that the process might fix the issue if it was software, and no dice.
Here is what I know it is not:
Battery- I swapped hers with mine, and the issue occurs with both. Both batteries work fine in my phone.
USB Cable/Charger- I have tried multiple USBs and multiple charge blocks, same issue, all work fine on mine
Cache Issue- I have wiped cache and dalvik, as well as did a full wipe and factory reset when I flashed her to 4.3, and same issue.
Rogue Apps- There is nothing running sucking battery
Charging when phone off- Even tried charging with the phone off to ensure it was not some funky process, and still had the same issue.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this, and if so, any ideas as to what could be the cause? Is it likely hardware failure given all of the things above it is not?

If you fully charge a battery on your phone and put it in hers does it show fully charged?

Yes, it does show charged. I have resorted to charging this way as a stop gap until I figure out the issue. At a loss for what it could be, I saw somewhere that a similar symptom could be caused by some gunk in the female Micro USB port preventing all of the pins from making proper contact (she is terrible about closing it), so I filed a needle and tried to clean them. Have not had a chance to test yet. The port is not loose at all, and jiggling the USB cable was not making a difference in a connection or not, but figured I would cross it off the trouble shooting list.

Yeah I was gonna say this really sounds like either usb port issues or some other hardware problem. Does it drain faster than normal?

Nope, drain is normal.

maybe the charger ?

So, do you have betterbatterystats?
I would suggest reading the through the original thread to get help with it.
Just make sure it's nothing on your phone causing the battery drain.
If you find something, post your stats and logcat of the service/app in question.
Have you also tried different roms? Did you notice any difference?

Fuze battery won't charge; Fuze gets warm

My Fuze recently stopped charging. It also gets warm to the touch now.
I bought a new OEM battery and it solved the problem for about three days, but then same problem.
I read somewhere that the Fuze has some sort of shut-off when the battery doesn't work to prevent overheating (or something like that).
It's still under warranty, but I would rather not have to flash back to stock AT&T ROM, etc.
Any ideas would be welcome.
So that's why you're sending it back! That sucks-I have no idea how to fix it, but since you now have two batteries, you could get one of those cradles that has a re-charging slot for spare batteries. Does it not recharge over usb as well as with a wall-charger? Perhaps the issue is with your charger, and not with the fuze. You might look into different charging methods, if you have them available.
No, FT, not getting an iPhone!
Weird that I woke up this morning and my phone did have a 92% charge (hadn't been getting over 20% in the last 10 days), but it is draining quickly without any use.
I'll try my USB charger, but I don't think that's it.
I can get a new one under warranty, but then I have to flash back, flash, set up again; lot of time involved.
i assume youve tried taking the battery out for over 30 mins, then putting it back in, leaving it shut off and charging for over 3 hours without interuptions or turning it on?
I also assume you are using original charger?
Have you considered that the rom/software you are using is wiping the battery out? Loathed to say it, but have you tried HR or reflash different rom as a last resort?

Yes, original charger.

Definitely. I removed some recently installed software, but no luck. Yes, a hard reset is scheduled for tonight. If that doesn't work, stock ROM flash and return to AT&T.
I'll try your ideas and let you know what happens.
I have a similar problem, however it still charges. Fuze gets really warm at sporadic times, and i'm starting to think it's because of the charger. I'm in Syria right now and using a converter and i'm starting to think it's because of it; swapping it in as soon as i get back.

I went to India a few years ago, and my wife made me leave all electronic stuff behind because she'd heard of stuff like that. You might want to ease off on the usage while you're over there.
mm it is weird though, as the htc chargers are now designed for multi area usage with just the plug part fitting into the adaptor/transformer.... obviously a cost cutting excerise from htc, so in theroy it should it ok for multi area use. I went to the maldives recently and had no problems with my HD
I had the same problem with my Omnia, but I just had to buy a new battery and never had the Problem again.
Overheating Problem in my Samsung i780
I have this same problem where my unit overheats, really hot to the touch. After switiching similar same spec orig batteries, the problem stays on which only means it is the unit and/or the unit's charging system that is faulty.
Any simple in-house remedy for this?
Planning to upgrade fw, though.
Thanks!

New Fuze new problems

So i got my new fuze and now there is another problem... This is a small problem, when my fuze is connected to pc through USB, it doesnt seem to get charged and the battery goes down pretty fast. I have already unchecked the battery option and changed the phone to turn off in 1 min. The backlight turns off after 30 seconds but screen is still on and so is the phone. I use Energy warhawk8/11 and radio 1.14.25.35, could this be the radio or rom? i have also tried to restart phone and pc and also tweaked the battery options with registry. any help please
check the temperature of the phone. if it's extremely hot then that's why..
By the "battery option," are you referring to start>settings>system>power settings?
Not the option
Yea i meant the setting battery options, its unchecked and i have the timer to shut off after 1 min... the phone syncs fine with comp but doesnt charge and screen doesnt turn off... also the temperature is fine
i probably assumed that you resetted the phone already... If that is still not working, try a new usb cable. you should have plenty lying around (if you have an external hdd you should have a usb - miniusb cable)
When you connect via USB does the phone ask if you want Activesync, file transfer or modem mode?
Active sync
Yes the phone syncs with pc and it says the phone is charging but the battery is draining... It doesnt seem to shut off after 1 min and if i shut it off manually it charges slowly, i also tried diff computer and wire... could it be the rom?

So, now we're getting the information you should have originally posted "it says the phone is charging but the battery is draining". You originally stated that the phone was NOT charging, when in fact it is but draining faster than its charging, right?
When asking for help, it is best to give the best information up front, be thorough in your description, tell us what ROM\Radio you're on, what symptoms you're experiencing, have you tried to fix it, if so -how? etc., etc., etc.... And you had better have searched for a fix first!
You had to have 8 posts to your question because you asked it incorrectly.
Don't look to be spoon fed and don't waste the time of people who are trying to help you.
Now on to your issue,
If you are running WiFi or GPS while sync'd, your battery usage will be greater than the rate of charge. Other things like streaming musiic can do this too.
Also as Thresher stated below and I forgot, your Radio can also cause this which is why you were asked if the phone was gettting hot. Typically the battery gets hot and then stops charging. I flashed back to 1.13 Radio from a 1.14 radio for this reason.
If your battery is just not taking a charge, then its a hardware failure.
Flash a stock rom and radio combo to it. I would use the latest from htc for att. sounds like hardware issues though. Inman is correct.
Hmm
Sry about that inman
Hmm
Sry about that inman
Now for the problem, it charges fine on AC but when connected to pc, the phone doesnt turn off and drains battery even thought its stating charging... I had 1.14.25.35 before and tried stock radio but didnt help. I dont have anything runnung on the phone... One more thing it seems to charge when i manually turn it off from the shut off button, i dont know if i should exchange the phone again for this minor issue
I don't mean to flame you, its just one of the biggest problems with this forum.
It all comes down to read, search, then ask, and offer anything you can.
Its outlined very clearly here.
What you describe doesn't make sense. It should not use more than the charge it receives if nothing else is running.
I do not know of a fix, nor can I replicate this issue.
You could try a battery monitoring program that will show you where you're losing your charge.
I would say, if you can, return it for an exchange.
Dark - you may have a minor issue (depending on what your phone is trying to do) or a major one (if it isnt supposed to be doing it!).
* Whilst on USB your phone can only charge at USB current (i believe 500mA [per passive port], 5v), if your phone is drawing more than 500mA [or others on the same port are], it will (overall) discharge.
* Assuming it IS CHARGING from the USB (and this is kinda significant) then your problem (if it exists) is an excessive discharge.
Basically Bruce is right - if you have your phone drawing a huge current (its working is [email protected]@cks off - and you know this) then this isnt a fault - simpy, a limitation of USB!
* If you don't expect your phone to be drawing a huge current then you need to look into this (charge to 100%, do a soft reset, plug into usb - observe to confirm) flash a new radio, a new rom, stop or uninstall apps - basically see wtf is taking all the juice.
* If the phone isn't charging then this is a different problem again! Check your pc, lead, settings & finally wonder about the phone (or pc) hardware.
If you need help - do everything you can do (or are happy doing), then tell us everything you did - and why - and what you found. Then others can help.
Please don't ever assume something you dont know about is not important - it might be! Someone else might use that info to fault find your problem.
Edit:
Regarding Bruce's comments about not seeing or being able to reproduce this error - i have, in the past, suffered for both "excessive" and "omfg f'ing crazy" battery drain. The latter i solved with a couple of soft reboots - although i had the problem several times, the answer was always a couple of back-to-back soft resets [in these cases, the phone was on the mains charger, and "charging", yet still was drawing too much current & the battery was overall discharging.
In the "excessive" version, i believe (my phone has been repaired & had hw replaced) the problem was the radio - or possibly the radio vs rilphone.dll file. Since these episodes i have a new main board, new rom & new radio so it is impossible for me to say 100% what the cause of my "issues" was, but i'm 95% sure it was radio/rilphone related.

HELP!!!! Fixing battery charging problem

Hello,
I went out last Friday and came home late. My phone is out of battery and dead. I plugged it in and woke up the next day with a dead phone. Apparently, there is a bug with the OPO. If the battery is too low, it won't even charge after you plug it in for charging. I have tried all tricks and even contact the OPO Tech Support Team. This thread describes how horrible they are:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/tech-support-onepluse-one-horrible-t3084022
I am at my wit's end. I have tried all the the tricks. This is a thread that I found that seems to have the same problem as I have.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/oneplusone-phone-dead-t3079256
The only choice I have left is to open the phone, disconnect the battery connection and reconnection it again. Hoping it will recharge. However, there is a warranty sticker and I don't want OPO to deny my warranty. I am not new to Android and I have fixed phones before. I also think of buying a new OPO battery and switch it with the factory one. Since the new battery will be charged, I think that will work in fixing it. But, doing that is much more complicate and it requires me to remove more components. If you have a good working solution for my problem, please help.
NOTE: please don't ask me to check my charger or use a different one. I check it 1000 times already. The original charger works, the cable works. I use different chargers and cables. Same result.
Thank you for your help.
Have you rooted and unlocked? I had the same problem when I got mine at first. It would show charging but never fully charge. 73% was all it would do. So after rooting and flashing a custom kernel the problem went away. Now I can go back to stock and the problem has never comeback. Maybe just a small software glitch or something. I'm just happy it's gone!

The phone is unlocked and rooted. The issue is not fully charged or not. The issue here is the phone does not charge after the battery die. The phone is dead because I let the battery run to 0. When I plug it to recharge, the low battery screen does not even come up. The phone is dead and refuse to recharge. There is no issue with the charger or the charging cable. I have checked it several time already. I am very frustrated with OPO Tech Support right now.
I see. Only other thing I can think of is try holding the power button for 60 seconds while it's plugged in. That does suck man.
I had similar issue, my conclusion is the bootloader charging function is broken.
Basically I would start the charging, it would charge for about 10 seconds or so, and then stop. I thought my battery was dead.
I couldnt boot the os as wasnt enough charge.
So eventually I just kept repeating the process, 10 seconds charge at a time, and eventually had enough juice to boot android and after that point it charged to full ok.
Never had this issue on any of my samsung phones.
Also to point out when it went dead it was plugged into my pc usb at the time with twrp loaded.

Phone not charging [need help ASAP]

My phone is not charging sometimes and when it is, it charges at about 1% every 15 minutes. I've tried many known working chargers and cables so rule that out. I switched custom ROMs because of this issue. and a few days in it began to happen again. What are some things that could be causing this?
Im desperate! really, it's only phone for communication. My last resort is back to stock but I really like my setup now and battery is amazing. Please help lol
If the same thing happens with several known working chargers and cables, then likely you have a hardware issue with the phone itself.
(On my first Nexus 5, the charging port came slightly loose and would only charge with the cable at a very specific angle. Got it replaced when it was still under warranty)
To be absolutely sure it's not the rom or kernel or some strange mod, make a nandroid backup, copy it to pc, then go fully back to stock. See if it charges properly.
Try out apps like Ampere etc which display the charging rate. Your battery might be dead or as mentioned in the above post
Just spent a whole day doing all that stuff, It's def the phone :'( It's absolutely heartbreaking since I don't have money to fix it......... Uuuuughh...
charging was wonky, been checking it constantly

Galaxy S5 Quit Taking a Charge

I'm trying to troubleshoot what might by wrong with my S5. I woke up the other morning and my phone was completely dead. It was plugged in, but no LED was on and the phone was not responding.
I've tried he various troubleshooting that I've seen around the internetz, such as:
removing the battery / discharging with power for 1 minute...plug back in and try again
use a different charger / cable
clean out the charging port (I used my air compressor to blow out any dust that might be in there)
I feel like I've exhausted all I know how to do. I do have another S5 coming in a couple of days, so I'm hoping to use that to see if it's either:
a problem with the battery
a problem with the charging port
something else?
My guess is that if the new battery comes in and I put it in my old phone, that will help me tell if it's the charging port or not, correct? My assumption is that if everything else is fine, then my old phone should power on.
I am a little nervous that it's something else though; I measured the voltage out of my battery and it was registering nothing the other day. When I plugged it into the phone and allowed it to charge (even though there was no indicator and the phone would not turn on) I measured the voltage again and it was registering ~2.8V.
Anyway, thanks in advance for anyone here that can offer any other guidance as to what I can look into to troubleshoot what the problem might be.
I've verified that another battery allows my phone to boot, so my guess is that it's the charging port.
How hairy are these to swap out? Is it a realistic repair?

ive cracked an S5 apart, and getting to the charge port isnt so bad if you can get the back plastic cover off, but you might have to remove the screen too. The S5 is waaaay harder to get apart than the early notes
You can get a wireless charging receiver or an external battery charger to charge you battery instead. I charge mine wireless as much as possible to help save the charging port for when I actually need it.
