Hello. First off im sorry if there exists a thread with similar answers but i couldn't find one, im sure its buried.
OK, so im moving from Sprint with unlimited Data to AT&T with shared 10GB between two relatively heavy data users, if money wasnt an issue i would just get a better plan but my wife and I just cant afford it. I will be rooting the LG G2. so theres the CONTEXT.
will change of the APN change how the data consumption is monitored? If so exactly how i did some reading and i got the gist of it but some layman's terms will be appreciated.
If i change the APN and tether will i still consume the allotted data?
And,
If ive missed the mark please dont hesitate to teach me.
again sorry if posts like these exist.

I have been researching a lot about rooting my Samsung Captivate, as well as reading through a lot of the forum posts. However, I have not come across any information about changes affecting the data, voice plan. Will gaining root access affect the way the SIM card functions or how the phone works in terms of calling and using the data plan? Thanks a lot.
Wrong area mate...moving to Q&A.
Cheers,
Sorry about that.
is there anyway to use a windows phone without data plan? I'm currently using at&t.
You have already asked that question and received your answer when you posted the same thing in the Focus forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071668
AT&T won't allow you to use a "smartphone" on their network without buying a data plan.
Please don't double post...
I try to find a solution. Is there any hacking method
WTF? I have never heard of such ridiculous things. If you just switch off the "data" toggle, then you are basically a normal cellphone with 3G modem...
If AT&T is like that, then I am damn glad to be in Canada...despite our three year contracts ...
i am on t-mobile, and i am without internet connection they never make you get internet connection for smart phones.
must be att only.
Not dev related, moved to Q&A
Hey guys got a quick question. When you tether a rooted phone is there a way to not use your data plan? I tethered my phone yesterday, but as everyone knows unless you were grandfathered in with a unlimited data plan you can not get an unlimited plan. Needless to say I already used all my data. I thought when you tethered a rooted phone ATT could not tell you were using data. If there is a way could someone please explain how to do it. I am using OS RCMix.Energized, Please help and thank you.
What??? What do you think gives you the ability to surf the web when tethered? Data doesn't just magically appear. It uses your phones data connection.
please go away. we arent going to help you bypass and steal from AT&T. you apparently don't understand what this site is for. Go to the ATT store and have them help you.
Hey guys there is no reason to get mean about it all you have to do is explain. Didn't you guys start out not knowing how all this works. I'm new to rooting and I asked a simple question no need to tell someone to go away. All you needed to do was answer my question. Sorry you guys think I asked such a STUPID question. Thought this was where a person could get a decent answer even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear. Thanks for being so obnoxious and rude. K.M.A.

This is a development forum not a user support forum
Is it truly unlimited and does it have a wifi hotspot on it? I was wondering as there really isn't anything in my area that is truly unlimited and is highspeed. I know net10 doesn't support tethering for low end phones but though maybe an android phone would be different. If anyone has this phone and is on net10 or straight talk if you could let me know that would be great.
I realize this.is. an old post. But im gonna answer the.question anyway.
The."unlimited" lasts somewhere between 2-4 gigs of data then it.slows.to a.craw. my data whent from 3-4mb/s down to 120kb/s and.stayed that way till i refilled my card. When i asked net 10 about it. They said.i violated a couple sections. And wouldnt give me a stait.answer. so that is my experiece with unlimited.
As for the.hotspot yes just look in the.market i have used.them and.they work. Some dont even require root!
zte merit, 777mhz, ics1.5
just wondering if anyone that has a limited data package with verizon, is rooted and has any trouble from verizon finding out about the data usage... i'm on a limited plan and want to root... i used to be with sprint and unlimited data, so it was never an issue or even had a worry that crossed my mind... just want to be sure before i go through the trouble of rooting my phone...
i dont really understand what your asking here but im sure if you go over you allowed Data useage you will probably get overage charges just like if you went over minutes or text msgs.
i dont understand what rooting would have to do with any of it. rooted or not you would still get charged for going over your data allowance. rooting is just somthing you do to unlock the phone so you can get access to modify the software. it really doesnt have much to do with the network. all your Data/min/txt usage will be calculated the same regardless if your rooted or not.
that's exactly what i'm asking... even though rooting and unlocking features of the phone is there... will the carrier still pick up the data usuage even if i'm rooted... don't know if there's a "blind" in the software, where it would hide data usuage or not... reason i'm asking NOW rather than later on and being charged an arm and a leg for tethering...
to be honest i dont know how easily it would be from them to see if your tethering, using hotspot or whatever. im sure there is a way if they wanted to see badly enough. but its probably not worth their time to even look into unless your usage is creating issues on the network.
but regardless, i dont think there would be an easy way to "trick" their system into thinking your using less Data than you are. if thats what your getting at.
i mean you are pulling the data from the network. regardless what your phone says the usage will still get recorded...
i think what your asking goes way beyond rooting and whatnot. i would suggest using WiFi where available and or getting a plan with more Data. ether that or just go with whatever carrier has unlimited data in your area. i wouldnt expect anyone to publicly be able to help you with this as if there was a commonly known way to get around this and a lot of ppl were getting "free" Data... it would be fixed pretty fast dont you think?
I'm rooted and using Bean's ROM with a 10GB plan. Never had any problems with this phone, my Nexus, or my Bionic.

I haven't tethered on my SGS3 since I've rooted it; I did tether on my Droid X. I have the grandfathered unlimited plan and I only did it sparingly and didn't have any troubles with VZW. In the height of the DX days P3Droid once mentioned that VZW knew who was rooted and tethered and would knock them off their unlimited data plan. I can't say I've ever seen a post from someone saying that they lost their data plan, but his tip on this kept me from tethering too much. Honestly, I'm still a bit afraid to do it now since I don't want to loose unlimited data. Since you're not on the grandfathered plan I wouldn't worry about that too much.
My suggestion is that if you do tether is that you keep it on the DL, yo. Don't go blasting though gigs of data torrenting crap, etc. Just be warned that if you do stuff that is obviously a network drain they'll spot it and "fix it".
damn... makes me wish i would've switched over a long time ago... =\ oh well...
only thing i ever used to tether was my playstation... i did play it a lot though... lol... thanks for the info though guys... much appreciated... and hopefully this thread will answer others questions in the future...
Not sure which plan you have but if you're on their new share everything plans then hotspot is included, they don't charge any extra
It sounds like he's asking either if there's a way to hide your data usage from Verizon, or if rooting and installing a ROM hides your usage by default. I've never heard of a way to hide your usage from Verizon.

yup... didn't know if rooting your phone would hide data usage or not... wasn't sure since i used to be with sprint unlimited data and i never got detailed bills...
but i see now that rooting only unlocks the feature of the phone itself... thanks again guys... :good:
It is a fact that you can not hide the usage but you can hide the fact that your tethering through certain apps.
