Hi all,
Just wondering what the custom ROM development scene is like for Nexus devices?
Are they available or does it get less support as people prefer stock Android
I understand that N5 will not have many ROMS at the moment, but what are peoples's predictions?
I have a Galaxy S2 at the moment, considering an upgrade to N5, and just wanna know what the activity of the scene is like for nexus devices?
Loads to browse through on this site.

Welcome to xda Ben... basically, dev support is likely to be huge... probably far more than a person can keep up with
Sweet, that's what i was hoping for!
Thanks for your help
If the Nexus 5 is like the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus development sections there will be a ton of roms. Unless there is some sort of encryption with bootloader or kernel that makes a root exploit hard to achieve. We already have custom recovery so that is a good sign.

Really android geeks buying desire not galaxy S ? So no good roms and no apps for galaxy S ? Which phone to choose better from theese 2
Please guys help
How about ROM's for galaxy S ? And i now that there's a OpenDesire for HTC Desire which makes desire super phone. Will be there something for samsung ? At least fixes or smthg?
Please answer me guys, i have a few hours to decide. I dont now much about androids
The Desire is a) made by HTC, which this site has always been focused on, and b) very similar to the pre-rooted Nexus One, which is popular with hackers. The Desire has also been out a fair bit longer. So there's an established community around the Desire, and I think the non-HTCness of the Galaxy S is likely to mean it will never quite be its equal in terms of development here.
However, I've seen mention that developers are waiting for Froyo before focusing on the Galaxy S. We do have developers working on it, and there's work on porting CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (a Galaxy S series phone). So I can't guarantee it will ever match the Desire, but it's not being ignored either.

the Samsung galaxy is a pretty powerful phone great hardware other then the few gps issues and the lag which if you dont over bog the phone with apps its generally a great phone. personally i am still running the stock rom that i have highly modified including boot up and boot down and removed all the crapware from the carrier its a wicked machine if done right and a tank of a phone almost impossible to brick
if you know what you are doing you are golden if you dont know what you are doing your going to end up figuring it out
samsung galaxy s: stock rom rooted
D-T-Mobiled
Will be there something similar like OpenDesire for samsung galaxy S ?
Just looking for some advice from anyone feeling well versed on the topic...
Looking to get a tablet... Wondering what tablet would be the best for customization with Roms, Themes, root user only apps... Amy suggestions?
Anyone out there SUPER happy with their specific tablet type (and setup? Rom, theme?)

I have the same question. I'm debating between the excite, iconia, and tf300. Or is there another I should be considering?
Yea the transformer tablets have a lot of support. The easiest thing to do would be look up various tablets and then search there respective forums to see how much development they have

I have a Xoom, but I think The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.2 (Newest one incase the number is wrong) would be good, since it is new, people will be developing.
I'm in the market for an android tablet as well but I see most of the tablet forums are dead or have 1 or 2 roms with action. Is there one in particular that stands out from the rest when it comes to development, roms, mods, and overall features?
My vote is for the Nexus 10. Some great roms and themes are out with more on the way.

We need to buy about 2 phones for testing some custom android apps we've built.
Does anyone have suggestions on what the best phones for testing would be?
I was thinking something with HTC sense on it, and something with stock android on it. Both need to be able to s-off and root easily.
erm... the google dev phones (nexus) ?? Personally I use galaxy nexus most for this kinda thing
For any kind of software testing, you need to know how it will function on both the latest and greatest devices, as well as the oldest hardware you intend to support.
I'd think for the price of two top-tier 2012 phones, you could buy 1 top of the line current phone, one from last year, and one from 2 years ago. Possibly also include Sense, Touchwiz and vanilla android.
Something running GB and something running ICS/JB. Many phones are still on GB so a used device running GB would be useful to test on.
Test it on emulator first?

Yes for sure it's the first thing to do,but not always if it works on emulator it will work on specific phone
Nexus one and galaxy nexus. Then you've got gingerbread and jellybean covered
If you need a newer phone for testing , the Galaxy Nexus is an obvious choice .
If you need a older phone ( old hardware ) to test yous apps , have a look at Nexus 1 or HTC Desire , it can run flawlessly 2.2 , 2.3 and 4.0.4 . I have a Desire on ICS ( BCM ) so I can tell .

HD2? ROMs range from Android 2.1-4.1 (AOSP, AOKP, CM), Sense 2.0-3.5 (one discontinued Sense 4 alpha), TouchWiz + GB, Xperia Arc GB, MIUI etc. It's also got similar specs to a low-range phone nowadays so that would be a good choice I think. In addition, a One X probably.
HTC One X?!

It seems it is indeed no contest there.
Does the Galaxy Nexus come with Sense by default? (It's been a while since I've looked into these. Last Android phone I owned was a droid bionic and before that the htc hero.)
We definitely are going to support gingerbread, so we'll need a little bit of an older phone too. I'm sure breaking it up like that into 3 or so phones is ok, as long as they fall under budget.
And yeah, the dev tests with emulators, but I'm QA on this project so I get to play with them real-world once he's done and find more bugs.
Nexus S and a Galaxy Nexus,
Will do the job well:thumbup:

GNex is a Nexus phone, so why would it come with Sense?
Anyway, the best choice is still the HD2 IMO. You can test it on all versions of Android from 2.1-4.1 and it's incredibly cheap, with specs which are not too bad (1GHz Snapdragon with 576MB RAM) for the price. If you can get the app to run smoothly on the HD2 the likelihood is that it will run on any newer phone.
IMHO you have yo use a stock device.. nexus as all the docs suggest. Custom ROMs have additions substitutions and tweaks that in a dev sense are not baseline. Although the differences are minimal or should be. Better to play safe. So nexus s and galaxy nexus.. Google provide stock ROMs for these in dev device downloads.

Noted. Thanks.
And yeah, that's cool that some of these phones support plenty of roms, but I don't want to be flashing 3 different roms every time the dev iterates a new point (v.2) update. I'd rather have 2-3 phones ready to go. (seems lazy, but I've got a lot of other work to do to
We got a droid (motorola timestamp issues), a Galaxy Nexus, and an hd2. So the hd2 comes stock with windows mobile? This is strange to me.

Well, the hd2 does have a lot of support, but when the top threads in the device specific forum warn of how unstable and beta-ish android development is on this phone, then I'm not really as excited as I was. might end up returning this one.
Hi
My current device is the Galaxy S3 i9300. I have found that the android development section for the s3 is plagued with limitations due to the manufactures (Samsung & other parties) holding back the sources. This results in lag, glitches etc ...stuff not working as good as it could.
My question is : does the Nexus 5 face the same limitations as the s3 due to google or lg holding sources back, causing things not to be working in custom roms?
I like what I see with the Nexus 5 but I want to be sure that I'm not falling into the same trap again before I buy one
Thanks in advance
You will not see the same limitations you see with the s3 on the n5. Almost everything is open source and you won't see locked bootloader, a bunch of carrier crap, etc

Nexus`s are build to be customised, you won`t find KNOX or bootloader unlockcode.bin`s (both will void warranty when triggered) here. Happy flashing mate Read the first 4 threads in the General Section well before you do anything . And don`t use tookits.
You obviously have never owned a Nexus. The Nexus isn't locked down like Samsung, HTC, etc. There are no hurdles to jump over when unlocking or modifying. Google makes there phones this way on purpose. That is why nexus phones are the best for ROMs and other modifications. Get a Nexus 5 and you will see how easy it is.
Nexus phone are developer phones. They're created to be modified, tampered, and messed with. You won't find any limits here, so go mental ?.

As i say though wi fi direct does not work yet which is annoying im just hoping they fix it soon as its software problem not hardware, apart from that its a nice phone
With a Nexus you can go as far as the mind can see... or as far as its fans want it to go.
Samsung don't release Exynos source. Actually Qualcomm also don't release snapdragon source either.
However, difference being, google releases full AOSP source code for Nexus 5 where as Samsumg does not, so unlike my old GT-i9300, Camera can still work, audio can still work as well as it would on stock. Samsung only release blobs and no HAL so that's why it suffers,
There will always be limitations developing new features on qualcomm devices, BUT existing features on N5 can work as well as stock. No hardware in the android world is truly / fully open source because of the proprietary nature of SoCs, but as long as the AOSP repository includes everythign we need to run that hardware, it's not so much a big deal.

What is the best device for developing ROMs/Flashing Custom ROMs/Rooting/Has the best support?
I'd like to get started with developing more and I'm going to start buy porting CM12 to a device that is my daily driver for now, but what device should I get that will allow me to maximize on rooting and developing ROMs/Porting features to it.

It is Nexus phone
Nexus phones are made specially for developers. Plus you have a factory image which you can write if something went wrong. Custom ROMs are always on the mark on this phone. And you'll get the earliest update.
May be this help you
Hit thanks button if helped
Nexus 5 and OnePlus One. Both have the advantage over the Nexus 6 in being compatible with KitKat ROMs. The Nexus 5 will have the advantage over the OnePlus One in terms of speed of updates, but that isn't to say that the OPO will be far behind. The OPO is a better phone; better camera, bigger battery, better hardware, etc.
I believe I'll add the HTC One M8 & M9 devices to @Planterz' list.
Usually any Nexus and more importantly XDA!

all nexus devices are best for development as it is vanilla android, but u could also go for any Samsung devices as there is not much concept of unlocking bootloader.
