[Q] Nexus 5 on Sprint - tether/hotspot? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, for the lucky folks who have already received their Nexus 5, has anyone been able to enable tethering/hotspot (without additional charges from Sprint)? Since root is available, hopefully hotspot is just a flash away - but I couldn't find any relevant thread in the Android development forum (or in the Q&A forum)
Edit: Thanks @ss4rob for trying this (link) out on the Sprint N5, and reporting that it works. And of course, thanks to @yakman66 for suggesting the fix in that original thread for the T-Mo

Yes, this works on Sprint as well - just did it on my rooted Nexus 5 from the Google Play Store and I am connected with my Mac as we speak - nice find!
As suggested above, I added a new entry to the "global" table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file. I copied it over to my Mac using ES File Explorer in root mode, and copied it back after editing in sql, making sure to preserve rw-rw---- and system:system attributes, and then restarted. I didn't have to edit any other settings - done. Thanks!

Edit: Also see post by @afazel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47354954&postcount=35 - has a link to post with screen prints for how to do this on your PC!

Would be nice! I hope this can be fixed soon.

I've got mine, but sprint won't activate the nexus 5 without a sim. Sims aren t released until Nov 8th. You can order a sim from an international chat room in sprint. No one has even gotten data to work so we can't answer the question
follow me @Bash_array

I activated my N5 today on sprint with LTE all day today. Sprint is not activating 32gb N5, just 16gb.

Could you please provide clarification and a source on this (the 32 GB part)? Why would they care?

There is no 100% clarification either way as of yet. Here is a guy that claims he activated his 32GB N5 on Sprint:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47123506&postcount=97
The theory has been since Sprint is only selling the 16GB N5, only those MEIDs are currently in Sprint's database. However, it seems some 32GB N5's are going through as well.
I'll have a SIM from Sprint on Wednesday and try to activate my 32GB N5 online. It that doesn't work, I'll be hitting up 1 of 3 local Sprint stores.

I cant get usb or wifi to work. Wifi the devices connect however unable to go to any sites. Anyone had better luck?

According the recent updates to this thread, other users are reporting that they are able to activate 32GB versions on Sprint now.

Does Wi-Fi Tether for root work or does the built in tethering option work?

I'm wondering the same.. don't want to sell my S4 until I know I can tether with the nexus 5 which is out for delivery at this moment. .woohoo!!! I'm going to use my S4 sim to activate my 32gb nexus 5... I heard it will work.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I managed to activate my 32gb last night with sprint chat support. First thing... Go to settings and manually choose LTE mode. Mine said LTE, but it was not actually chosen until I chose it manually. Then put in your Sim and get on chat with sprint. When you give them the imei number... Also give them the serial number from the box... Not the serial number from in settings. They will figure it all out from there. I had to program my phone.. Setting the mdn and msid manually...but only because the LTE wasn't turned on originally.
PS... After the programming... It will change to global mode... So you may have to set it back to LTE one more time.

Have 32gb Nexus 5 on Sprint, built in tethering does not work. It creates a wifi ap that devices can connect to, but no internet access.

same here.... my Nexus 7 shows "connected" (to the hotspot from my N5), and gets an IP address too, but the wifi icon on the Nexus 7 stays gray (doesn't become blue to show data transfer) - and I have no internet access.
Crap!

Getting same results here. Does rooting solve this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Rooting in itself won't do anything - till somebody can figure out what files need to be modified to make it work.

I did what they said to do in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512674
It worked perfectly for me. I believe the instructions on what to do were on page 7.
Edit: I'll just post what he said to do here. I figure that will be easier.
I have the T-mobile $30 unlimited prepaid plan and I ran into the tethering block after getting my Nexus 5.
"I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.
I hope this helps."

Just to confirm - you are using the N5 on Sprint?

No. I'm on T-Mobile. From the talk over in that thread, it seems like its a kit kat issue not related to carrier. Just give it a shot and let me know if it works for you?

Simple mobile 4G on gingerbread update!

Hi for all of the Simple Mobile users. I ran into a difficulties trying to get 4G internet on my new LG G2x with gingerbread update. Per Simple mobile website, to make MMS and internet work all you have to do is create a new APN for Simple Mobile in apn settings (http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Support-Center-Phone-Programming.aspx#LG), move the green button to new APN, hit save, reboot your phone and you good to go. However it says there also that you CANNOT modify original T-mobile APN that is already created in the phone.
Now here is the problem with gingerbread update. After you rebooted your phone you can go ahead and use internet but right when you got your first page the green screen coming up with t-mobile customer service info and it says there that there is no connection with your phone, please call the number provided below. You might have luck actually getting on the first page but after that - nothing. What happens is after you start using internet your phone stop reading information from newly created APN and automatically switching back to the original default T-mobile APN. And it doen't matter if you reboot the phone or not, it will still make an automatic switch.
Now after discussing this issue here on the board, with great help from jboxer we came to a solution. Jboxer said nobody done this before so I figured why not try it and it actually worked.
All you need to do is root the phone using these tools:
1. Install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2. root it with this zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
I am a noob in flashing/rooting the phones but it took me only 20 min. to do this procedure. Right after I root the phone I went to menu - settings - wireless & networks - mobile network settings - access point names - hit on T-mobile APN and now you got the opportunity to modify it! The rest - do exactly what the simple mobile website tells you to do.
Hope this helps!

That is not how I said to fix it. Rooting the phone doesn't allow you to modify the default settings. In fact, rooting is not even necessary to do my fix. What I said to do is to flash my file that sets a new default APN for Simple Mobile. Here is the thread below. Sucks to be miquoted so badly.

lol. Well props for making a flashable fix (best method IMO)
I guess once rooted it allows the settings to stick? Others have had luck with APN managers from the market which backup and write custom APN entries which works.
So the problem is that the APN keeps defaulting to Tmobile and the solution is to somehow edit and Save the default Tmobile APN setting with information that pertains to Simple Mobile so that it sticks.
Glad its fixed either way.
another way to fix it is by going into lg hidden menu
dial 1809#*999#>KR Setting>Set KR Settings
this removes all of the apns including tmo's then u just put in the simple apn nd ur good to go

Rooting would not make a difference here. All rooting means is that apps can request superuser (root) permissions to make changes to the system, and the app that sets the apn never requests root access so rooting the phone would not do anything here. Simple Mobile users were always able to make a new apn (default apns can never be modified). The problem is when they reboot it goes back to TMO's settings. Have you tried rebooting yet. My fix sets a new default apn for Simple Mobile which can be set and stick throughout rebooting, etc.
Also, as stated in my other thread, my fix DOES NOT require root. It only requires that Clockworkmod Recovery be installed.
Dude,
I have been using SIMPLE MOBILE forever and not had the problem you are speaking of. Just follow the instructions on the SM website. Set up the new apn. When you reboot hold the volume button up while rebooting and you should be set. Could it be you aren't setting up the apn properly?
And on some of the ROMS you can edit the T-Mobile apn.

Speaking of Simple Mobile, do they allow using the Wifi hotspot feature on the G2x? I saw in the company's FAQ that tethering was not allowed on SM phones, but wasn't sure if that covered hotspotting as well.
I have a question for you guys, I just got an unlocked G2x to use on simple mobile that I haven't activated, On t-mobiles site it says it supports for 4G, but on simple mobiles site it says it's only approved for 3g data, my question is do I need to get the 3g $40 plan or $60 4g plan to get the most out of the data on this phone?
Do both plans give you the same volume of data (i.e., 500Mb, 1Gb, etc)? If so, go with the cheaper plan. The systems hardly ever let you get the full speed anyway. In Thailand I only get between 2 to 3Mbps usually and it is plenty fast.

I have ran into this problem. I recently obtained a G2X and SIMPLE Mobile SIM and account. I paid the $40 for the "3G" connection. However it seems that the speed is throttled to around 118kbps down. So I did some testing and found that forcing the phone to use "2G Only" allowed up to around 160kbps down. This is just insane! I have read where some people on SIMPLE Mobile 3G have been able to get around 1500-3000kbps but have no idea how they manage that. My Optimus V on Virgin Mobile's 3G averages around 600-1000kbps down. That is usable. The SIMPLE Mobile one is just crap. I hate to have to pay more for less, unless you count the unlimited talk in that, but I may be sticking with VM for a bit longer. Any ideas how I can get the speed up on the SM one without paying the $60/month?

I mainly use google voice for my text and such since I ported my number to GV and all. Be sure not to pay the $12.99 for the SIM directly from SM. Go on amazon and buy one for about $1.99 or if you are a Prime member get the one I did for $2.49 w/ free 2-day shipping. Won't hurt to try with it being that cheap.

odd.. I just switched to the G2X and bought a new Sim card with 4g.
before I had an LG optimus T with the 3g and always got 3g speeds around 2000kbps
On the 4g with my G2X I get anywhere from 2000 to 5000kbps. The really odd thing is its either 4g or 2g. I'll be sitting at work and it will drop from 4g to 2g.. making me think "wtf happened to 3g"?
Another thing I noticed is the hand off between edge and 3g was much smoother. With the G2x It will often completely drop all connections, data and voice, then pop back up with the different speed.

Yeah SM is just stupid slow on "3G". I actually got faster speeds when I forced 2G only network. My wife's Samsung Gravity Smart also has the same speeds as my G2x. I am thinking of switching to the $30/month 5GB of 4G data w/ 100 minutes that T-Mobile offers just to try it out. I can use my GrooveIP to make/receive calls if need be.

Just be ready for super slow speeds if you don't pay for their "4G" package. I ran some back to back tests yesterday with my SIMPLE Mobile sim and a T-Mobile sim in my G2x.
SM "4G" 118kbps down/ 132kbps up
SM "2G" 159kbps down/ 131kbps up
TM "4G" #1 885kbps down/ 348kbps up
TM "2G" 207kbps down/ 133kbps up
TM "4G" #2 1505kbps down/ 524kbps up
all ran back to back. So even T-Mobile 2G is faster than SM 3G. lol

Ok I got one,
My microphone is broken (everyone says I sound like I'm in a tunnel) I don't have the $ or time to fix the microphone, so I've been using my headset. My head set has a sucky midrange, where everything sounds muddy. I need to amplify the high end and reduce the mid range on my calls. I know the Galaxy SIII has an In-Call EQ, is there an EQ I can use to fix this situation on my phone or is there any kind of hack I can use?
I saw other screenshots of people's speed test with the Blaze & theirs seemed way higher than mine. Anyone know a way I can improve my speeds? Running Provision ROM V3.1

It's all location dependent. But some have seen higher speeds with the T989 uvmc6 radio
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400 Try a few out and see what happens, note what radio you have now so you can go back if you want.
But in the end most of it is just how loaded the towers are in your area (at least with the blaze's hspa42), and what server speedtest is connecting to. But your speeds are pretty average and not that bad. I normally get 6-8mbps down, 2mbps up, 60ms ping.

My husband has the samsung galaxy s blaze 4G; love the phone, but is having a recurring issue. The last 2 micro sd cards he's had in it have suddenly been wiped and lost everything that was on them while mounted in the phone. No warning, just everything's gone. I haven't tried a hard reset yet. When it happened with the first card, I unmounted it and tried reading it on the pc, but it was blank, then the pc wouldn't even recognize it.
Any suggestions?

Is it possible to change the path to which the phone saves apps when you chose to move them to the SD card? When I do this on my phone it just moves them to the "internal" storage space and not onto my 32GB microSD card.
EDIT: Nevermind, just being dumb and lazy this evening. I've found the info in another thread...
Should I Unlock?
Let me start off my saying that I am just your average housewife with a cell phone problem. I am hoping to get some honest advice about unlocking my phone.
Obviously, I have a T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze. I bought it used from a private party and intended to use my Walmart Family Mobile sim with it, but it would never recognize my sim card. A couple of months worth of troubleshooting went by and the whole time I assumed the problem lied with my service plan and sim card. I finally took it to a T-mobile store, surely they would have some magic settings or a quick fix, right? Wrong! They informed me that the phone was network locked because someone reported it stolen and there was nothing they could do for me.
My service plan is 'powered by T-mobile'. Will unlocking the phone enable me to use it on the T-mobile network again?
The phone is in perfect condition. There has got to be some way to still make it usable. Any advice you have to offer would be so helpful.
Note: T-mobile 4g Sim = no indication or recognition of the sim
Walmart Family Mobile 3g Sim = message basically stating that I need to upgrade my sim
Any ATT Sim (not prepaid) = a screen pops up requesting an unlock code

My service plan is 'powered by T-mobile'. Will unlocking the phone enable me to use it on the T-mobile network again?
The phone is in perfect condition. There has got to be some way to still make it usable. Any advice you have to offer would be so helpful.
Note: T-mobile 4g Sim = no indication or recognition of the sim
Walmart Family Mobile 3g Sim = message basically stating that I need to upgrade my sim

If the phone is reported stolen, you will not be able to use it with t-mobile. Unlocking it should make it work with ATT. Data may be limited to edge speeds on ATT
Edit: Not sure if there is a way to check it they told you the truth at the store. Maybe someone else has some experience with this?

Have you rooted the phone yet? Do you have a custom ROM installed? If you do it could be a matter of just setting the correct APN settings under the network settings. I could be wrong though. But its worth trying. Look up the Walmart mobile APN settings and see if that will work. That would be the first thing I would try. If you don't know how to change the APN a simple Google search will find what your looking for. Hope this helps.

Please don't get frustrated with me
1. My phone is not rooted. Not too sure what rooting is, but I think its like jailbreaking?
2. I probably do not have a custom ROM (googling that right now)
3. I know all about APN settings. I have many different APN's for T-mobile. Yes, I have Walmart's, as well.
I am very familiar with how to add them to the phone.
4. I also upgraded to 4.0.4 ICS (not sure if that's important)

Nexus 5 and Metro PCS

Hey guys, sorry if this question seems a bit silly but I'm rather new to the nexus world and don't know too much about Metro PCS and what their network requires.
I'm looking to buy my mom the nexus 5 since she really needs a new phone and she is on Metro PCS. Would she experience any issues on Metro PCS's LTE network or anything like that if I grab the N5 that's available in the play store now? I do believe that Metro PCS is currently running on T-Mobile's network, but I need to be sure.
Also, what kind of SIM card will the N5 require? Hopefully it's a micro so there won't be a need to head over to a metro pcs store to get a correct one.
Thanks!

N5 uses a MicroSIM card.As far as the other questions you ask, I cannot answer them confidently.
MetroPCS' LTE is TMobile's LTE.

Yes, microSIM. Also if your Mom is currently using a CDMA/LTE device from Metro she will probably need a new SIM.
The only thing to be aware of - unlike T-Mobile itself, MetroPCS SIMs require you to register the device IMEI with Metro and then they lock it to your device. So if she swaps it to a new phone, it may not work until Metro gets it properly registered.
What APN settings worked for MetroPCS and your Nexus 5?
I went to a MetroPCS store today with the Nexus 5 I bought from the Google Play store. I only had about 30 minutes to mess around with the APN settings. but I was unable to connect to their network with the test microSIM card the worker had. I got the LTE bars to show up, but the connection never changed from the white "I'm still trying to connect" mode to the solid blue "I'm connected" bars. If anyone has a successful experience with this, please let me know what APN settings you used. I know it is an unlocked phone and should work, but the Nexus 5 wan't in the MetroPCS system as a compatible phone (which I assume is due to the fact that it just launched a few days ago).

FYI, I don't think KitKat uses the white/blue distinction anymore. Did you test using apps or the browser?

You are correct. There is no white/blue distinction. I've only had the Nexus 5 for a few hours and have been used to Cyanogenmod on my Nexus 4 for the last year. Yes, I did test apps and the browser. I got errors in the apps and the browser wouldn't load any websites.
I am currently on Solavei (and it works on the Nexus 5) and have switched carries 5 times in the last year, so I'm quite familiar with APN settings. I appreciate the idea though. Sometimes it's a simple answer.

Okay good to know. I have less experience with Metro PCS but it seems that T-Mobile wants to keep them a bit more locked down.

Manual PRL Flashing

So I have seen this mentioned in a few threads but I wanted to strart a thread totally dedicated to this...
Sprint and other CDMA provider require a PRL (Preferred Roaming List) to identify which towers to connect to, including towers to roam on. They release various PRLs based on type of account, business or personal. Business accounts generally have more towers set up for VZW and allow users to roam more freely. I'm not looking to abuse this but it definitely helps in situations where I can't get a Sprint signal. Before the Sprint bashing starts, I know the coverage sucks right now.
On many touchwiz Roms I have been able to manually write a PRL file by renaming the PRL file to test.PRL and calling the write PRL function of the dailer by accessing a ## menu and clicking the write PRL button.
I have looked in all of the known dialer codes and menus and can't find a way to flash a PRL manually. Can any developers / hackers figure this one out? I will be glad to help in any way I can and would even be willing to pay a few of bucks for the app if app development is required. Thanks!

I am currently taking a look through the data/data/com.android.provider databaseses to see if I can edit the PRL manually as with how I needed to add the "dun_tether_required" to bypass carrier blocking of Hotspot....

I understand the concept of PRL lists, but why do GSM carriers not use something like this?
It would also be nice to force Verizon roaming. Any one find a way to do this?

This is how I got tethering to work on lollipop. Might be what you need..
$ adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0
https://pmf.silvrback.com/fixing-tethering-on-android-kitkat
Just to clarify, I still use the tether fun required 0 entry in Global under settings.db
But originally I was looking for a way to sideload "PRLs"
Initially LTE (4g) was lacking in my area and better 3g (Evdo Rev A) could be obtained based on PRL. But LTE coverage has improved and I no longer need to worry about a PRL to improve 3g performance.
On Sprint I have been using Hangouts Dialer to do simultaneous voice and calling by using data and/or WiFi for phone calls. Allowing me to still browse/use data at the same time.
Have you tried this method?

T-Mobile Hotspot Tethering

is there any trick i can bypass this?
Interesting. We just moved into a new apartment and while we wait for internet to be setup we have been using wifi tethering from my Nexus 5 and her Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile. Going on 4 days now with no issues at all with web surfing...

yes sqlite then locate settings.db add this line "tether_dun_required" add value 0
then go to your APN > APN protocol change to ipv4. restart and you are good to go
