Have there been any updates on this front? Per my searches, haven't found evidence of a successful flash to an sprint mvno

I've been on Ting with my N5 over a month...works great!
You need to have a Sprint SIM (Ting sells them for $10). Then, just go to their pages and activate. If you're already on Ting...the best bet is to give them a phone call...they'll step you thru the process to activate.

I have been using TING on my N5 for a couple weeks.
TING is very good - but be cautioned that I am only running 3G - not getting LTE. This is a coverage issue though - and not a TING or N5 issue.
I was getting 4G on my E4GT - but with my N5 I am now getting worse data speeds as LTE is not in my area
One of the things I really like about the N5 and TING - is I can switch to AT&T or TMobile at any time if LTE doesn't come around on Sprint soon enough!

I've been on Ting for about a week now with my N5. They claim you can only use those bought directly from Google Play and you need to buy a Sprint SIM card (they'll sell you one for $10+tax which is pretty much at cost).
Mine works fine.. gets LTE and everything. Just keep in mind if you use voice or mobile data a LOT then Ting might not be your best choice.. but if you rarely use mobile data or voice (and are in a wi-fi area the vast majority of the time) you can save some serious coin.
I bought my g/f a Purple Galaxy S4 and she bought me a N5 for Christmas. I have both phones on the same Ting account (you can only use Galaxy S4 or HTC One phones that you actually bought from Ting). We text with them more than anything else and have wifi at home and at work and at most restaurants.. and for both phones looks like our bill this month is going to be well under $40 total.

Ting ran out of sim cards No restock till mid January and my N5 is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Really bummed

You can possibly pick up those cards on Ebay, I picked one up there and worked great. It is a Sprint Model: SIMGLW206R

I ended up finding a local Sprint repair shop that just gave me one when I asked nicely Love the N5... but I have the same service issues I did with the HTC One when it had a CM/AOSP/GE ROM installed. At this point I'll ride that out and see if it gets better or if I need to find a different provider.

Note 3 and Straight Talk

Gonna be buying note 3 here in a few days and this is the one that I'm gonna get...
http://negrielectronics.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3-32gb-lte-t-mobile-unlocked-black.html
Tmo has unlocked BL as well and has the 850 and 1700 freq unlocked. Is this the one that I should order on The 3rd?
Was gonna get a note 2 but figures since I'm buying out right might as well get the best.

I bet the carriers had something to do with the pricing and Samsung with the international models doesn't want to under cut them. There is also regional pricing. Whatever they feel like is a good price considering the competition and people I guess.
We know that from the FCC papers that Tmobile version will work on AT&T LTE but what If those specific bands were locked or not turned on in their radio? We dont have a real world proof yet.
Gonna order mine in 2 days... will post when I get it from time I order to in my hand. I have the new LTE sim cards from STart as well so I can see what happens. I am not LTE yet but hopefully soon. Thanks for the input. ?

It will work but you are going to get throttled.............
They have actually set a cap on it now and it is 2.5 gigabytes.....
rooted, recovered, and rebooted from the ol' i777.......
I'm also interested to see how this goes. I might wait a few weeks to get the phone, but I do plan on getting one that can work on AT&T's 3G/LTE bands on ST, since T-mobile coverage in my area is pretty poor. Keep us updated, OP, and thanks.

I have ATT LTE Straight Talk sim card. if you notice their policy changed. you only get 2.5GB of unlimitted data at LTE speeds then you are dropped down to 2G Edge speeds until the next billing cycle. If I were you I would try a few of the other carriers. (MVNOs) Be aware that over the past week quite a few of them have changed their policies to allow on y the first 2.5GB at LTE speeds. You can always go to Simple Mobile and pay $60 to get 5GB at LTE speeds. Target just opened up BrightSpot Mobile which has a decent plan for $60 5GB of LTE data. There are alot of MMVNOs to consider.
Any updates
Just wanted to see if anyone could post any updates of how there experience has been with this phone on Straight Talk? Thanks!

Mine has been awesome!
In Ohio with AT&T on the N9005.
They WILL throttle you after 2.5GB, but only during peak hours for your tower
I was able to use all data I wanted (HSPA+. no LTE since I have N9005 and not N900T or N900A) without being throttled at my house out in the boonies. As soon as I go into the city, data speed drops to 250kbps once I've used my 2.5GB. Speed is around 6mbps when I'm not throttled.
PS. My parents have ST on their Nexus 5's and they get 30-50 mbps when not throttled and 250kbps when throttled. If you have the N900T ot N900A, you could expect a similar speed on LTE.

Returning Sprint N5 Going PrePaid

As the title suggests I'm going to return the Sprint N5 I just got and go with a prepaid plan. My area suffers from the older tower hardware issue so my phone hasn't gotten LTE since I got it even though I have been in definite coverage areas.
So I ordered a new N5 32GB today and am going to pick up a sim this week to play with. I looked into the T-Mobile $30 plan but the 100 minutes is really low and although I get good coverage in San Francisco on TMo I'm not sure how the coverage is around my parent's place (more rural area) Because of the TMo limitations I am leaning towards going with Straight Talk.
Anything I need to know or maybe another service I should consider?
I was thinking I could port my number into GVoice while I figure this whole thing out. That way I don't have to deal with porting into prepaid multiple times. Anyone done this before?
Thanks for any help :good:
I'll probably go with Straight Talk if Sprint service in my area doesn't improve really soon.
Side comment - you probably could have just kept the same phone and swapped the sim card. There's no such thing as a "Sprint Nexus 5" - the same model is compatible with all US carriers except for Verizon.

Yea I bought the Sprint phone on contract though and would have had to pay an ETF to keep it and this way I could get a 32GB instead of a 16GB.

They live near Folsom lake on the south side.
I activated a sim with the $30 TMo plan tonight then did the *#*#4636 code and forced it into "LTE Only" Went on a drive and it held onto LTE much better than I would have expected. Speeds weren't crazy (8-30Mbps down) but respectable considering the area.
Gonna give this sim to my Dad and get him an HTC One for the wifi calling then try out Straight Talk in a week or so when my N5 shows up.
Not sure what to do about the GVoice number though, I'm gonna see if I can call them tomorrow. Really don't want to lose this number due to something stupid.
I'm visiting in-laws in folsom right now and have good LTE coverage and around 25 Mb/s download. I've generally found this area to be good in the last year or so with the improvements. We are near the high school.

Sprint Nexus 5 to T-mobile

Hey guys, just picked up a new Nexus 5 about a week ago after a couple years with an iPhone 4. Loving the phone but have quickly realized how terrible Sprint's LTE is. I was looking forward to getting a LTE device and though my slow data woes were due to having a 3G phone, but now I realize that Sprint just has poor coverage where I live.
When I got the Nexus, Sprint switched me off my contract to the new "Framily" plan crap, and set up the Easy Pay for the Nexus. So if I am not mistaken I can take my number somewhere else whenever I want without any ETF, just have to pay off the remaining balance of the phone. T-mobile has excellent service in my area...
So my question is; I know the Nexus 5 is an unlocked phone, and in theory my device I bought from Sprint should switch right over to T-Mo with no problem. I have searched around and found a lot of people asking the opposite question- wanting to go from T-mobile to Sprint with their Nexus 5 and Sprint has given them problems not wanting to add the IMEI to their system since it wasn't bought from them or the Google Play store.
Does anyone know if it will be possible for me to just pay off my phone balance/bill with Sprint, walk next door to T-mobile and get up and running with them using the same exact device?
Thanks!
look at your Coverage area for T-Mobile if not go to an Att mvno called puretalkusa if coverage is good T-Mobile will pay your etf but it is an absolute pain in the a$$ in the process of getting it setup so they will pay the etf you may have to stick with sprint for a month or so call sprint and ask what the contract payment would be or you can keep your nexus 5 and get the cheapest plan on sprint and find an old sprint phone and activate and take your nexus 5 to T-Mobile thing is I don't know if sprint carrier locks there nexus 5s

T-mobile coverage is excellent in my area according to their map on the website, not sure how accurate/true that is...but I have a coworker who has a S4 on T-mobile and gets excellent speeds all around the office while I can only get LTE in certain areas of the building and even then I am lucky to crack 5mbps
As for the ETF thing, if I am understanding correct I should have none because I am no longer on a contract plan since switching to the Framily plan. So for me to get away from Sprint all I would have to do is pay the balance on my Nexus, plus of course my latest bill I am sure, and then I am free...no need to get T-mobile to pay my ETFs.
Really just wondering if Sprint "carrier locks" their devices like you said above...which again, if I am understanding correctly, isn't really possible with a Nexus phone because it is, well, an unlocked phone.
It is accurate I get okay signal in my area but a around not that great but its a lot better than Verizon I always got terrible signal with Verizon you are very lucky I hope you never have to deal with T-Mobile technical support because it is very terrible

Ok awesome, exactly what I was wondering. So I can still get their 80$ fully unlimited plan with bringing my own device?
Also I see you are located in Houston like me, how much better is T-mobile's data for you compared to Sprint...

It's been good so far. I get lte in a few places I would get 1x with sprint. The couple things I've seen with T-Mobile is once you leave the city its no good. I would be on edge a good amount of the time while my wife (with an N5 on sprint) still would have lte. This was going to college station and San Antonio. The other thing is building penetration. T-Mobile signal gets worse when I go inside buildings. To be honest I'm having my wife wait until they roll out the spark update to see if I pick up better signal at the few places I was getting 1x. If I do and T-Mobile hasn't upgraded there edge speeds to lte outside of the city then I'll go back to sprint.

Dont get me wrong sprint wasnt that great either. Its just tmobile is a little worse. Not that i dont have signal but it will drop to edge or a slow 3g/hspa. At least where i go. My big thing is the signal out of the city. I travel outside of houston often and i would hold lte alot longer on sprint then i do with tmobile. Tmobile is supposed to be upgrading there edge towers with lte by 2015 so it might be better. But thats the great thing about the nexus
5, if the service sucks you can just switch.
Overall though when I'm in the city I've been a lot happier with T-Mobile. The LTE speeds have been double those of sprint. That might change if the nexus gets the spark update though. So if you stay in the city more you'll be a lot happier with T-Mobile.

If your area has band 26, you'll get better building penetration.

Metro PCS Signal Issue (Brooklyn Area)

My friend purchased a new 1+1 and is having issues obtaining a good signal in his basement apartment in Brooklyn. I was wondering if anyone else in the NY area that may be in a basement area is experiencing these issues on MetroPCS.
Also does anyone have a good wifi based calling app that works well. He has tried Uber and Viber I believe but had issues with both. Any help would be appreciated and he is running full stock no root.
I understand that in a basement not all carriers operate well but just trying to see if anyone out there has a solution that I have not been able to find. If not there will be a 1+1 for sale... LOL
Thanks in advance
Can't speak for MetroPCS but since they're pretty much with T-Mobile. I live in Brooklyn and don't have any difficulties obtaining signal in my basement.
I'm not sure if it would even help if he switched to T-Mobile since they're pretty much the same company.

We are going to try that today since my boy who is on T-Mobile is getting his phone today. He is going to go over there and check it out. The difference is of course T-Mobile has priority on the towers and not sure where MetroPCS falls in with the other MVNO's as far as priority for the towers.
He had an old LG 770 or something that apparently worked great but it was also a MetroPCS specific phone

Wow lol your friends sure have a lot of invites .... if they're now starting to get T-Mobile and want a good plan, they should get the T-Mobile $30 plan. 100 minutes, unlimited text, 5GB of high speed data. Its a bummer that the 7 day trial for TMo the iphone uses a nano.. if he has a adapter, he can use the adapter to turn the nano to a micro and then put it in the opo.

Yeah Apple standardly uses Nano-SIMs... he can buy a Nano to Micro SIM adapter. Thats weird that he bought a signal booster, T Mobile usually supplies you one for free if you fulfill certain criteria when it comes to having 1 bar of signal or something like that.

I have T-Mobile and a guy at work always rags me since the merger saying I'm on Metro. I live and work in the Tampa Bay area so both T-Mobile and Metro have 4G/LTE service here. A few co-workers have Metro and I always kill them on speed test. In fact some of them need to walk outside just to make a phone call or download something while I can do it all inside without any loss in service.
In fact the guy who rags me is on Verizon and he now shuts his mouth since I also destroyed his speed test results.
I really just think it has to do with Metro.

I agree with you and like I said the test will be done later today but trying to keep him from doing anything crazy till we test. He has to stand in one part of his apartment just to make a call. I would be upset too but then again its a basement....
Its probably on lower priority like what playya said to make people switch over from MetroPCS to T Mobile as they're slowly and slowly reallocating the spectrum to tmo.

Same here. The only thing I can think of is that there are a lot of walls and not a lot of windows so signal is hard to penetrate. Does he get LTE speeds as well? Too bad the T Mobile Take Action page is down, it was a page to note down complaints on signal.

Verizon S3 on Straight Talk

Just received my SIM card from straight talk for the i535 all I did was go to straight talk web site activate the phone using the phone imei number then start phone with SIM card installed> Once SIM card was activated I restarted the phone and had LTE with no need to setup APN settings.
I just shut off the verizon service right before setting up the phone on ST so I do not know if thats has effected anything but hopefully it doesn't.
Also I had to contact Straight Talk using their facebook page to get the SIM card and it was shipped for free.

Good to know, I get my sim card from straight talk tomorrow. I didn't imagine it was that hard to setup. You did the smart thing and went to facebook, like an idiot I called them and it took well over a week for them to send it

Oh it took them a while to send it to me also. I had even told them to cancel it and thats when I went to Verizon. I was told at one point that the SIM cards should be in stores around December 5th,

That's correct. I am now with straight talk with a VZW S3
All I had to do was get the sim card from straight talk and call them to activate it. It was a pretty simple process

So you didn't have to hack the phone or anything?? Verizon is CDMA and Straight Talk is GSM, how did that work? Especially without setting up a new APN?
Oh and did you get the AT&T or TMobile sim? I think straight talk still has the option for either.

It does but straight talk told me the AT&T and T-Mobile sims won't work for this phone. They sent me a CDMA specific sim card, and cmda phones will indeed work on straight talk, not every single one but most
And no I didn't have to do anything with the phone, didn't have to edit apn settings or anything. I'm still running off the Verizon network

Wait, Straight Talk has Verizon SIM's now??? Meaning Verizon is one of their MVNO's? I always thought it was just TMobile and AT&T and Tracfone leased off Sprint for CDMA based phones.

Tracphone owns straight talk for one. It's a straight talk sim... But they piggy back off all 4 networks. VZW, ATT, TMobile and sprint

Are you referring to me?
I was. However I hooked my Old S3 up for a family member. I can confirm that the VZW S3 will get 4G LTE on the Verizon network with the CDMA Sim that comes with the starter pack. Ran a speed test at full signal strength and had an initial burst for ~9-10 mbs and stabilized at ~5mb both up and down. This is way more than the user of the phone will need but also not a bad number.
For comparison sake my personal phone on a VZW unlimited plan still gets 40+ mbs during speed tests in the same location. Appears that ST is speed limited but at 5mbs still more than 99.9% of users will ever need/notice at one time.

Yea I'm not worried about speed as I'm 99% of the time on wifi so I could care less now. The initial starter pack didn't come with the CDMA sim. Card which is a pain but now it does

Quick question for those that have done this already - I have just ordered the Galaxy S3 I535 from walmart because i'm cheap and it was on special - Would it be wise to at least activate the phone on Verizon and entering the details on ST's site to make sure it will work before getting the sim or just ordering it (they are on special right now for .99c) I'm glad they are doing the CDMA sims because i had read that folks were only getting edge for data using the AT&T sims and was prepared to limit myself to being on the Verizon prepaid plan and just sucking it up...

If its the prepaid version it may not work, the prepaid version doesn't utilize a sim card where as the contract version does

Probably a good idea. I'm truly unsure if it will work or not. I have the S3 contract version and it works great on straight talk. Another user informed me the prepaid version doesn't utilize a sim which in most cases at least for VZW means no 4G
