How come the okay Google voice command only works when I set my language to English (united states), when I set it back to English (United Kingdom) I lose the feature. Is this intentional?

I guess if English UK doesn't work then I assume English Australia won't either
Maybe Google doesn't like people with British accent

They must like something about them. They got their phones in their hands before us.
They probably didn't have time to program "Oi Oi, Google!"
Its probably the same as the old Google now issue that voice search would not work 'offline' until you downloaded the relevant offline speech recognition , or changed it to use English US. Not yet received my nexus 5, so can't confirm

It only works with English (US), but I am from the UK and it recognises me just fine when I changed the Now settings.
To enable:
Google Now settings --> Voice and set language to English (US). Reopen Google Now and go back to the same settings - you'll notice Hotword Detection option is now there. You can now "OK Google" from any home screen.

I heard the real reason was payback: UK refuses to take back Piers Morgan...
When I change Google Now to US It misses every third word. When it is set to Aus, it works perfectly. Seems to be a pretty silly limitation. Would this be able to be hacked? I.e. make it think it is using US when it really is using UK or something else?

Ah well. It would have been nice to have it recognise real English, but it's worth it if we can keep that pr*ck the other side of the Atlantic

Google maps/navi is usually bound to the system language, make sure you selected "Enligsh (US)" and no other app is fiddling around with that setting.
I thought the units of measurement in google maps is based in your location. For example if you're in china it could use the metric system instead of the English...

Hi
Does anyone know how to change the $ dollar key on the physical keyboard, I've looked through the file keypad_8960.kl and can't see any mention of it?
Thanks

Have you looked under usr->keychars at the keypad_8960.kcm file? I'll take a look myself but I assume that's where you would start.

Thanks for the reply. I've edited that file with root permission but even after a restart its shift+4 still gives a $ even though the kcm file has retained my changes!?

Hmmm, are you sure the permissions on it are rw-rw-r? Also, that could be the wrong file. I was just making a guess haha
Permissions are rw-rw-rw

In the settings menu there are options relating to your location. Have you changed it from US to UK?
I can't seem to figure it out... I know you can hold shift+4 and get a menu with the pound sign, but it's not as convenient as having it do that automatically. :/
I'm sorry, I gave you a bit of bad advice. On my other phone, there is an option to change regional settings between English US and English UK, among others. Now that I've got the Q in front of me it appears that the only options are English US and Spanish. I wish I could offer you some other advice, but I'm stumped.

Find 'More locale 2' in the Play store, and i hope you will find your country.
Anyone else having a problem getting OK Google to launch gone now? It worked fine when I first bought the phone then stopped after a couple days. Then I rooted the phone and it started working again but then stopped after a couple days. I'm running stock rooted. I even cleared the data on the search app and it still didn't work.

It only works on US English but as the OP said, it did work before and he hasn't changed language so we can assume he is using US English.
It's an issue that I've seen crop up around XDA and Reddit and one I've had myself, so don't worry too much because I assume it'll be fixed in later builds. All that works for me is a reboot, then Google Now will detect 'OK Google' again. Try that.
"Ok Google" may disappear but feature is working
that's what is happening with me. I wiped the Launcher data twice to get back the "Ok Google" on the search bar
but it disappeared again and When I say okay google it works
A reboot definitely doesn't help. The only other time it came back was when I unlocked the bootloader and it wiped the device.

If the microphone on the "Google" search bar of the home screen is filled in, it is listening. If it is hollow (an outline of a microphone) then it's not listening.
Reasons it may not be listening:
A. An app has requested audio access (games, music, videos, camera, even if they're in the background). This is especially common with games that insist on running even when no longer visible. Swipe away the app(s) and the microphone will activate itself again.
B. Not set to US English.
C. Google Now isn't configured.
D. Hotword in Google Search settings is turned off.
Any of those reasons are common and considered normal functionality. If you can eliminate all of them then you're looking at something more in depth like ROM issues, broken hardware, etc.
The microphone is hollow.
A. It isn't a game or app because it doesn't fix with a reboot.
B it is set to us English
C gone now is configured
D hotword is turned on
I haven't changed any of the settings but I have double checked that the settings are correct. I read on Android police that other people are having problems with now but none of the problems are the same as mine.

Not sure if it'll work for you, but changing the language, back to home press the microphone and then changing it back to US seems to work for me.

I cant even activate Google Now cards! Also a lot of the settings are missing on the google search app. My language is set to US but i think google is blocking it here in my country
On my Note II i had it working fine!
The first picture is from clearing the cache and uninstalling all app updates. The second picture is the first page after activating Google now.

Have you tried turning Google Now off and then back on?
So opt-out and then back in?
I thought I remembered reading that OK Google should work even on your lockscreen if you use slide and from any other screen as long as your device is awake but it only works on my home screen or Google now... An I just wrong or is something wrong with my device?

Nothing wrong with your device.. This feature is enabled only for US devices.. Although there may be a workaround to activate it on your device I heard.. I'm from India and this feature does not work on my phone

Its not from where you buy it. Its what carrier you are connected to and what is your primary email id on device. If your email id has address/postal code of outside of us then your device is not consider as us device

Oh well. I'm guessing there's no way to fake it yet...? Thanks a lot!

I have the US version and live in the US and "OK Google" does NOT work from the lockscreen. It only works from the homescreen or Google Now as OP has stated.
Pretty sure it's only supposed to work from the Homescreen where the microphone symbol is present. Confirm/deny?
Actually now that I look it up on all the reviews it says on home screen or Google now... But I remember reading a while ago saying unlocked out lockscreen without password... Whatever.
If it worked on the lockscreen though that would be awesome... So much more useful

OK Google in India
You can still use the feature.. Don't worry..just follow these simple steps:
Menu>settings>language & input
Change the language to English (US).
Now just go back to your home screen.. And say 'OK google'
Worked for me and my friends..
Cheers!!

Yeah, it's like a tutorial but it leaves after a while.

The indicator for if Hotword detection is currently listening or not is the microphone symbol in the search bar. If it becomes hollowed out, such as during speaker music playback then it is not listening.
