Insurance on the nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is everybody doing for insurance on their nexus 5. I was going to buy my N5 at my local best buy till I saw their price gushing. I take full advantage of their geek squad insurance. I don't find 10 bucks a month to bad in case I break my phone.

I was thinking of checking out Ensquared. Seems like a good deal, but I'm still trying to track down enough real-world experiences before I commit.

Also curious about this. Finally leaving Verizon where I always had insurance at least the first year of a new phone. Never really been a fan of cases but thinking of going that route instead.

I don't have enough money to insure my phone.

I'm not taking my N5 with me when I get drunk, like my N4. That should help this time, and also that the back is made of plastic not glass.

My insurance is not breaking my phone. Has worked for me well so far :laugh::laugh:

I pay 10 a month for insurance on my HTC one x with geek squads insurance. I have been through 5 phones so I think it has been worth it.

Can you get this insurance on phones you didn't buy at best buy?

I don't believe so. Apparently Best Buy ended up changing their insurance policy as well to where there is now a deductible. I got tired of the crap I was having with AT&T and ended up buying a nexus 5 from the Google Play Store and switching to T-Mobile.

phone insurance is worhtless. For example, the S4 insurance for T-mobile is $10-12 a month. then you pay close to $180 when you claim one. So lets say you claim one after 10 months. That's $100-$120+180= $280-$300. on top of that you get a refurbished one. I know its a peace of mind but why not just put those $10 on the side instead of paying the company. and hope you don't ever break the phone. and if you do, then you got cash to pay for a fix. that's the way I see it.

I suppose it depends on the policy but I agree for some it is not suitable.
For me it is though. My Nexus 5 cost £300. I pay £7 a month for complete cover and get a brand new device with no "excess" to pay.
So in 1 year I have paid £84 which is not enough to buy a new replacement.
Im covered for accidental damage, loss and theft. For me this is peace of mind. I've had 2 of the 3 things happen before

What policy do you have?

Not sure for you other countries but many US credit card companies offer different perks for being a member. My phone is covered for free with a very low deductible, I think $25, when I pay my cell phone bill with my Wells Fargo credit card.
For this phone, it's not worth paying insurance for because you could get a new or used one cheap.

Black tie vs sprint's tep

I realize this has nothing to do with our phones but maybe someone can help, which is better? Why? Thanks in advance!
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I don't have Sprint, I have T-Mobile, but FWIW I opted for the black tie over the Asurion plan (whether you have Sprint or T-Mobile or AT&T or whoever, your insurance is still likely through Asurion).
If I lose my phone I'm SOL, but I feel I'm far more likely to break it or have water damage that I'd want covered, which Black Tie covers no questions asked with no deductible.
Also recently my back button started freezing up on me, so I took it in to Best Buy and they just ordered me a new phone and gave me a loaner to use until it gets here. So worth it.
Before anyone buys a phone from bb, do your homework with your cell company. I've seen many times, with sprint phones, that bb's price is considerably more expensive than buying it from the provider. I'm not talking about signing a contract, I'm talking about buying the phone outright full price. I've seen differences in price that were in upwards of $100 more for buying it full price at best buy.
Thanks Matt, Oscar the grouch I was asking about the insurance but thanks for the input
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I have sprint insurance and I love it, but if BBC give you a loaner that's cool also. With SPRINT if you live by a repair shop (I do) it perfect
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
What I'm saying is don't go to bb just because of black tie and buy a phone. You might be paying more than you should. That was for other people that might be considering what you're talking about in future purchases.

What's The Best Insurance To Go With

I was doing some research and was wondering what insurance everyone else is using. What is the best insurance company to g with and why?
I also was wondering does the Samsung galaxy S3 have a 1 year warranty like the iPhone?

I think almost all phones have a standard 1 year warranty. For insurance, i have Asurion through Verizon. However, there are others such as Squaretrade.
Anyone know how Asurion and Squaretrade insurance compares to Best Buy's insurance? I bought my GS3 at BB.
I am wondering also. Best buy told me they changed their warranty policy and do not try to fix the phone anymore, they just replace it.... I wonder if they lied?
I bought my phobe from ebay... Can i still insure it???
VERIZON GALAXY S 3
Asurion is more expensive than squartrade but asurion offers lost or stolen correct? can you insure with BB if you didnt buy it there?

Best Buy changed that a long time ago. I had the service plan on them with my old evo and I brought it in witha problem 4 or 5 times. I dropped it off, paid a $50 deposit and 2 or 3 days later I would get a basically new phone from them, drop off the loaner phone and get my deposit back. It's pricy ($10/mo) but it covers water damage, physical damage, defects and just about anything else. I just bought my GS3 there yesterday and got the service plan again and it's still the same coverage but they added a thing where if you trade in that phone when you are done with it you get $50 back on top of the trade in price. Pretty damned good deal if you ask me.

I use the best buy insurance. 10 a month on the 2 s3s and a g nex. If you get the full coverage and have an extra phone you can use you won't have to pay for a loaner phone. Also no deductible. Assurion is complete joke. 100 dollar deductibles and you will only get 2, YES 2 phones. I did this with my htc thunderbolt and received a letter in the mail from them stating that my insurance is dropped because I reached the 2 phone limit.
Insurance? What's that? I've never carried it lol.

For better or worse, it seems that Verizon treats you differently if you have insurance through them/Asurion. A couple of years ago, I was having a problem with my LG Voyager and took it in to them. They told me it was a known problem with the phone, and they were going to let me pick from three other phones right there at the store.
A co-worker's wife had the same phone with the same problems, so I told them to go in and try and get the replacement. When they went in, they were told they couldn't get a free replacement phone like I did, and that it was because they didn't have the insurance on the phone.
I've used insurance enough in the past to warrant me continuing to use it, so when I heard this, I figured I'll just stick with Verizon's Aurion insurance due to the benefits that possibly come with it.

I've also been eying ensquared. It looks like the best, but I'd like to hear if anyone has experience with them.
The BB insurance seems like the way to go. So basically for $10 a month you continually drop your phone, and you will get a brand new device each time? Not that I would do that, but it would be nice to have that piece of mind instead of having to worry so much about your phone...
I will definitely be buying my next phone from them if they don't change this policy.

VZ rep told me a $199 deductible. When I started laughing at her, she said it was an $800 device. I declined.
Okay ya it asurion is a 100 dollar deductible but it covers lost and stolen phones. No other does that I know of without having a deductible. Best buy is 10 dollars a month combine that with asurion so your covered if its lost or stolen. That's 17 dollars a month or 204 dollars year. 2 year contract that's 408 dollars.

Square Trade Insurance

They are having a sale for the Galaxy S4.
$99 for a 2-year plan of you can pay $5.99 a month.
http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
Read the fine print - $99 deductible makes your insurance policy worth a total of $200, or, exactly what you paid for the phone (unless you got it at Walmart or Best Buy with the Phone Freedom)
Yes, I know that you're locked in for another 2 years and all that good stuff, but if you don't have a way of getting another phone on contract at any time, you should start looking in to that instead.... My point is, if you break the phone tomorrow, it will cost you the same price as if you pulled it from an on contract plan, but if you break it two or three months from now, it will be cheaper to get another on contract phone because that price is variable and will certainly drop compared to the Square Trade price that is fixed....
I was a huge fan of ST back in the day, but their prices now are just outrageous! A good case costs a max of what, 60 bucks? Sounds smarter than $99 plus whatever you're planning on getting already to protect the outside of the phone!

I did read it, and your post seems to assume people just have unlimited upgrades laying around, which is false for the vast majority of us.

I paid full price for mine $639 plus tax..
If you shatter the screen it's $99 to get it fixed with the insurance. Without insurance it's another $639 plus tax..
Sure you can add another line and get a new phone for $200.. Plus the added line of $10 a month, plus the added line smart phone data fee of $20 a month.. Adding another line will cost you $200 plus tax, plus $30 a month for 24 months..
Do the math over 2-years..
I will stick with Square Trade thank you very much..

Then maybe you should look into that instead of wasting money on an intangible, inflated insurance policy! I have a finite amount of upgrades to use too, but at least I can get another phone quickly without having spent $99 for potentially no reason ahead of time....

It's not a better suggestion.. It's a ridiculous suggestion IMHO..
Your idea:
$199 for a new line to replace broken phone.. $30 a month ($10 for added line and $20 for cheapest data plan) x 24 month contract = $720 plus the $199 for phone = $920 total cost..
-vs-
Full price phone $640
-vs-
Square trade plan $99 plus $99 deductible = $200
Ya your way is better!
Note that I did NOT say new line.... YOU said new line.... I have upgrades from other accounts to use, but then again, I think you're only reading / comprehending what you want, so I'm done trying to offer help if you're going to be the voice of XDA!

Thanks for not wanting to *help* me understand how doing it your way will cost $920 and doing it the insurance way will cost $200..
Preciate that.. LOL
Also. I have a friend who went through 2 iPhones in a year because of shattered screens..
Doing it your way she would have spent $400 just for upgrades never mind the monthly cost associated with having 2 extra lines. Now we are talking $400 just for contract price phones. Add in the monthly add a line and data fees for 2 phones and for 2-years and your idea / plan is even more asinine..
With Square Trade she spent a total of $300..
Oh well... To each their own..
Heres a couple coupon codes if someone wants to save a few bucks on the plan $91 instead of $99.

Re-purchasing the phone using an upgrade on your current plan will cost you no less than the ~$199 (cost of the phone) + $240 ($10 a month for add'l line w/ blocked data * 24 month contract) and you switching phones from that line to your original number. This is well above the cost to get a replacement through SquareTrade.
OR, are you referring to taking another family members' upgrade and therefore simply subsidizing your cost by pushing it into the future?

coincidentally I do have 2 extra lines with upgrades since I pay for my parents lines and they stick to dumbphones.

Squaretrade is loads cheaper than AT&T's $6.99/mo with $199 deductible.

Well one thing that the att covers is theft.
Honestly, you get a extended warranty if you purchase your phone with a premium credit card. They will also pay for anything the manufacturer doesn't want to cover. That's 2 years.

You are right, ST doesn't cover theft. I didn't consider that.
I've never had a phone stolen (famous last words?) and that's because it is either in my hands or in my front pocket. I do this not only for theft reasons, but also for dropping reasons. Of the 27 smartphones I've owned in the last 3 years, I've only ever dropped one once.
The cost of the phone would be the least of my worries to a phone being stolen, honestly, I don't want some rando having copies of my music, pictures, and notes. Regardless of my having backups.
I will check out credit card coverage options, gotta put my 12 CC's to use somehow.

Really? TEP is a total ripoff. 10 bucks a month PLUS a $150 deductible on the off chance that you actually have to use it. Seems like kind of a questionable reason to sell your awesome new phone, especially when you can get a brand new one for $350. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

well see i like having insurance on every smartphone i ever had.. i really dont care what insurance it is.. all i kno is TEP.. do i want to sell my new phone.. na not really.. just want insurance on it that all years ago my evo 4g got stolen paid 100$ they sent me a brandnew phone... so 10$ a month really dont bother me much.. what happens if something like that happens to my new phone.. im *****d
I'd never buy insurance on a $350 phone but I have Worth Ave Group insurance on my son's iphone.
Why not set the $150 aside and then put away $10/mo as insurance?? You'd reach the outright purchase price of the phone pretty quick if you ever ran in to problems. It can't possibly be that hard to set aside some reserve in case your phone dies.
Sell the phone, then pay $450 for the same phone from Sprint, they'll let you pay $11 per month for high deductible insurance.
$450 cost of phone
$150 deductible if you lose it once.
$11 per month x 24 ? = $264
Spigen has both cases and screen protectors. http://stores.ebay.com/spigensgp/
I don't buy any other.

You can't get tep only insurance for if its physically damaged or liquid damaged which is dumb. But I'm a technician for sprint so if your in northern Virginia I can try to help you the best I can. But it may change in the future I will let my higher ups know and get this addressed to try to help not only you but people with this phone cause I don't think its fair that if your speaker goes out that you would have to pay $53 or $75 once they change it for not having in store coverage which cannot be covered. I think with all the people I know I should be able to get something done I'll post back when I get something confirmed but rest assured I will get tep for this phone for everyone that wants it.
I activated my n5 today and they transfered my insurance no problem it actually went down to 8 a month instead of 11

The issue is the 32GB model, If you have the 16GB model you can get Sprint TEP on it, as I have it on mine and mine was bought from the play store, but anyone with the 32GB model will not be able to get Sprints TEP and will not be able to have sprint techs look at their phone in repair stores either, it's simply not supported. PS I am a technician at a corporate Sprint store

TEP is a ripoff. My credit card offers free coverage, as long as I pay my cell bill on it every month. $400 of coverage I believe, with something like a $50 deduct.

I work at the employee store and bought the 16gb version (obviously) and it wouldn't let me get tep so it may just be a temporary issue with RMS

Forget the fact that you have insurance, how many times have you had to claim insurance in all the years you had the smartphone? I had TEP for my HTC Touch Pro for almost 1.5 years back in 2009/2010 and I only claimed it once. To me it was a rip off and this was when it was still $7/mo. At $11/mo currently it is even more of a rip off. To add insult to injury the Galaxy Nexus 5 is only $350 unlike the GS4 or iPhone 5S which are $650-$700.

Anyone getting their protection plan?

Anyone getting their protection plan? Is it worth it?
I did, but is it worth it? If I break it or drop it in water then yes. If I go a few years without damage then no.
I have added protection plan because I like my phone naked.
Can we add this if we have already purchased the phone?
I got it. I usually pass on stuff device protection but I feel like this could be the first phone in years that I actually keep for 2+ years. Figured it was worth it to get the protection, just in case.
I get added 1 year with my credit card.

It's sometimes easier to sell a device to people on Swappa.com if they know it's still got a year or more of Google warranty coverage. They are transferable, plus it's nice to have just in case. I've only ever broken 1 device, knock on wood.

I got it because I'd rather not pay out of pocket to replace a $800 phone if something were to happen. worth the $99 at that point.

Before buying the Pixel i called google for the same questions and they told me that I can get the protection plan only during checkout.
Also they told me that I will be able to cancel the device protection plan in any time and get refund according the prorated bases.
Sound to me like the right thing to do.
I got it for 2 reason:
1: I carry my phone naked
2: I have a 2 yr old and a 6 yr old
Anybody work with mobile rhino insurance? Are they any good? I forgot to sign up for the insurance plan.

I didn't get Google's protection plan, but I was on the fence. If I could add it on now (since the phone hasn't shipped yet) I probably would since I hope to keep this phone for the full 2 years.
I might add coverage through square trade when I get the phone. They have been great to deal with in the past. It's a little more expensive $150 iirc for 2 years of coverage.
On a related note, if you have an American Express you should always use it to purchase electronics like phones. Am Ex automatically doubles the warranty on anything purchased with it, and pays FULL REPLACEMENT VALUE.
I had it for my 5X, which is the first phone I used naked. Also the first phone I cracked the screen on when I dropped it once. Google insurance seemed pretty great to deal with, honestly, as far as that stuff goes. I absolutely added it to my Pixel order, especially since these things are so expensive. Plan on going naked again.

Hmm, I talked with a Project Fi rep and she told me I could add the device protection up to 30 days after receiving the device. Maybe this is a Project Fi only option? Either way, seems worth it on such an expensive device.

Yes you can add device protection up to 30 days after receiving the device, But if you are buying just the Phone you can get it at the time of purchase only.
Glass on the front and back. Yup... Sounds like a good idea
I have the Asurion insurance... I HATE them. Its cheaper to get a new phone via VZW than insurance claim. Im debating, but will likely cancel it.

Yea, I recently has a claim on my S7. It was cheaper to buy a new one.
